Multiphase NiCoFe-Based LDH for Electrocatalytic Sulfion Oxidation Reaction Assisting Efficient Hydrogen Production

Zengren Liang,Yong Nian,Hao Du,Peng Li,Mei Wang,Guanshui Ma

Sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR) has great potential in replacing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and boosting highly efficient hydrogen evolution. The development of highly active and stable SOR electrocatalysts is crucial for assisting hydrogen production with low energy consumption. In this work, multiphase NiCoFe-based layered double hydroxide (namely NiCoFe-LDH) has been synthesized via a facile seed-assisted heterogeneous nucleation method. Benefiting from its unique microsized hydrangea-like structure and synergistic active phases, the catalyst delivers substantial catalytic interfaces and reactive centers for SOR. Consequently, NiCoFe-LDH electrode achieves a remarkably low potential of 0.381 V at 10 mA cm−2in 1 M KOH + 0.1 M Na2S, representing a significant reduction of 0.98 V compared to conventional OER. Notably, under harsh industrial conditions (6 M KOH + 0.1 M Na2S, 80 °C), the electrolysis system based on NiCoFe-LDH||NF pair exhibits a cell potential of only 0.71 V at 100 mA cm−2, which shows a greater decreasing amplitude of 1.05 V compared with that of traditional OER/HER systems. Meanwhile, the NiCoFe-LDH||NF couple could maintain operational stability for 100 h without obvious potential fluctuation, as well as possessing a lower energy consumption of 1.42 kWh m−3H2. Multiphase eletrocatalysis for SOR could indeed produce hydrogen with low-energy consumption.

Electrochemiluminescence immunosensor for thiamethoxam detection using NiFe-LDH-loaded Cu single-atom catalysts

Chen Rui,Pang Chaohai,Ma Xionghui,Wu Xuejin,Liu Chunhua,Yin Guihao,Zhang Zhenshan,Li Shuhuai

An ECL signal amplification strategy is introduced leveraging a multimetallic catalytic amplification effect. Nickel–iron bimetallic oxide compounds were synthesised and loaded with Cu SAs catalysts on their surface to create nickel–iron layered double hydroxides/copper single atoms (NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs) with robust catalytic properties. These NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs were employed as signal amplification elements to modify gold electrodes. C-dots labelled with thiacloprid DNA aptamers were used as the signal and molecular recognition elements to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor. The NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs significantly amplified the ECL signal of the C-dots, enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. Upon capturing thiamethoxam via the aptamer, the ECL signal was effectively quenched, demonstrating the potential of this approach as a highly sensitive method for thiamethoxam detection. The excellent catalytic performance of NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs amplified the detection signal over 20-fold, while the aptamer improved the specificity of the sensor for thiamethoxam recognition. The method demonstrates a linear range of 2–6000 × 10 −12  mol/L and a detection limit of 6.52 × 10 −13  mol/L, with recoveries of 90%–110% for real sample analysis. This study demonstrates a highly sensitive and specific method for thiamethoxam detection, with real-world applicability, while highlighting an innovative multimetallic catalytic strategy that can facilitate advancements in sensor design across various fields. NiCo-LDH@NiCoP composite as bifunctional catalyst exhibiting excellent full water splitting performance

Xiaoya Yuan,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Jianlong Wen,Yanning Qu,Xiaodong Hao,Shukai Ding,Bingshe Xu

Transition metal phosphides, owing to their hydrogenase-like structure, are theoretically expected to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance. However, in practice, their performance often falls short due to the phosphorus loss and the insufficient active sites in the electrochemical processes. In this study, the NiCo-LDH nanosheet coating was applied to the NiCoP nanorod array, which not only prevented the loss of phosphorus during electrochemical processes but also provided abundant active sites, thereby significantly enhancing its electrocatalytic performance. Specially The phosphorus mass loss in NiCoP was 8.3% during the electrochemical processes, whereas in the NiCo-LDH@NiCoP composite, it dropped to 1.12%.The as-prepared NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). At 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, its HER overpotentials was only 59 mV, very close to that of Pt/C (58 mV). However, when the current density exceeded 192 mA cm −2 , the HER performance of the NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF surpassed that of Pt/C catalyst, with the HER overpotentials being to 233 mV at 200 mA cm −2 and 260 mV at 300 mA cm −2 , significantly lower than those of the Pt/C catalyst (236 mV@200 mA cm −2 and 295 mV @ 300 mA cm −2 ). It also demonstrated excellent OER capability 1.0 M KOH, with an OER overpotential of merely 190 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , much lower than that of RuO 2 catalyst (260 mV). Consequently, the electrolytic cell structured with the bifunctional electrodes (NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF||NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF) required only 1.4 V@10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH for full water electrolysis, significantly outperforming that of the cell using full noble metal cell (1.51 V for Pt/C||RuO 2 ).

Effects of Cationic and Anionic Defects on NiFe LDH in Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Xintong Li,Yizhe Liu,Qidi Sun,Zhuowen Huangfu,Wei-Hsiang Huang,Zilong Wang,Chu-Chen Chueh,Chi-Liang Chen,Zonglong Zhu

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising method to generate high-purity hydrogen, yet its efficiency is limited by the large energy barrier of the counter oxygen evolution reaction (OER). NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDHs) are considered as promising electrocatalysts, and some studies have indicated that the involved cationic and anionic defects can further promote their electrocatalytic activities. Nevertheless, the inherent relationships between the defective structures and catalytic activities are still unclear. In this work, by alkaline corrosion of NiFeZn LDH and NaBH4 activation, we involved cationic and anionic defects, respectively. In addition, they both promote the electrocatalytic activity of NiFe LDH in OER, and the co-defected NiFe LDH (cd-NiFe LDH–NaBH4) only needs a low overpotential of 205 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm–2. We invested the exact effects of cationic and anionic defects by electrochemical characterizations and X-ray adsorption structure. The results indicate that the effects of cationic and anionic defects are different, and the cationic defects could promote the oxidation process of Ni species in OER, thus facilitating the favored lattice oxygen mechanism routine, while the anionic defects could enhance the reactivity of Fe sites by creating partially filled antibonding states of Fe–O. Our research reveals the origin of the accelerating effects brought by defective sites in NiFe LDH for OER and provides a facile approach to enhance the catalytic properties of noble metal-free electrocatalysts toward OER.

Hierarchical nanosheet-nanowire heterostructures of NiCo-LDH@NiCo2S4 for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Xiangfeng Feng,Shihan Xiao,Zhuoran Hou,Gaosen Wang,Jiangtao Cui,Huayu Zhang

Partial sulfidation yields NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 sheet-wire heterostructures. • Sheet-wire structure enables 3400 F g −1 specific capacitance at 1 A g −1 . • Sheet-wire morphology boosts active sites and ion diffusion kinetics. • DFT shows higher Fermi level electron density, aiding charge transfer. • Kinetics show coexisting capacitive and diffusion-controlled processes. Developing electrode materials with enhanced specific capacitance and exploring their structural-property relationships are essential for optimizing the overall performance of supercapacitors. In this study, a novel binder-free electrode material comprised of NiCo-LDH and NiCo 2 S 4 was successfully synthesized on a nickel foam substrate through a hydrothermal method combined with a high-temperature gas-phase sulfidation process. After partial sulfidation treatment, NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 composite presents a special structure composed of the nanosheet-like NiCo-LDH and the nanowire-like NiCo 2 S 4 assemblies. It has a significant specific capacitance of 3400 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , the specific capacitance retention remained at 44.7% even at a high current density of 10 A g −1 . Additionally, a NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 //AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was constructed using the NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 as the positive electrode, activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode and 1 M KOH as the electrolyte. This device achieved an energy density of 82.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 700 W kg −1 and retains 90.1% capacitance after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 . More importantly, DFT calculations reveal that NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 facilitates charge transfer and increases specific capacitance. This work presents a viable strategy for the design of electrode materials, facilitating the development of high-performance supercapacitors. A novel binder-free electrode material was synthesized on nickel foam using a hydrothermal and sulfidation method. This material is composed of NiCo-LDH and NiCo 2 S 4 , exhibiting a unique nanosheet layered structure assembled from nanowires. Due to the synergistic effect of NiCo-LDH and NiCo 2 S 4 , and the assistance of the conductive nickel foam substrate, the NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 composite material demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance. Compared with other asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) devices, the NiCo-LDH@NiCo 2 S 4 //AC ASC device exhibits higher energy density and power density. Controllable one-step production of 2D MgAl-LDH for photocatalytic removal of tetracycline

Xinqi Long,Yinke Wang,Jun Hu,Lixu Wu,Chun Sun,Feipeng Jiao

In this work, 2D MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method with adding H 2 O 2 . The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. Particularly, with 30%wt H 2 O 2 , MA-4 exhibits the optimal optical properties along with the largest surface area of 63.21 m 3 /g among the fabricated samples. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of MgAl-LDH nanosheets were also tightly related to the concentration of H 2 O 2 that 99.34% tetracycline was degraded by 2D MgAl-LDH(MA-4) within 3 h. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the analysis of energy structure and the result of free radical scavenging experiments. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of MA-4 still reached 85% in five successive cycles, which showed remarkable reusability and stability. In this study, the 2D MgAl-LDH nanosheets were expected as a promising catalyst for practical water purification and provide new ideas in the field of two-dimensional photocatalysis.

Sorption of cadmium onto Mg-Fe Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH)-Kiwi branch biochar

Yuehui Tan,Xianqiang Yin,Caiyun Wang,Huimin Sun,Aisheng Ma,Guilong Zhang,Nong Wang

The Cd(II) adsorption of kiwi biochar functionalized with Mg-Fe (3:1) layered double hydroxides (LDH) was studied. And the biochar was got via liquid-phase deposition, by incorporating Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide (Mg-Fe LDH) particles into kiwi biochar (KB/LDH). The batch of sorption experiments were studied, including adsorption kinetics and isotherm and the effects of pH, ion strength (IS) and co-existing ions. The KB/LDH composite showed a strong sorption ability to Cd(II) in aqueous solutions with the adsorption capacity of 25.6 mg g−1, compared with pristine biochar of 1.78 mg g−1. The adsorption of Cd(II) on KB/LDH composite increased with the decreasing of IS, decreased first and then grew larger with the increase of pH and was observed irrespective of the co-existence of K+, Cl− and NO3−. To sum up, the KB/LDH can be potentially used as an alternative adsorbent to amend the water and soil contaminated by Cd(II).

Development of a thiophene derivative modified LDH coating for Mg alloy corrosion protection

Lin-Xin Li,Zhi-Hui Xie,Carlos Fernandez,Liang Wu,Daojian Cheng,Xiao-Hui Jiang,Chuan-Jian Zhong

A new thiophene derivative corrosion inhibitor (CI) was developed to functionalize the layered double hydroxide (LDH) primer on Mg alloy to enhance corrosion protection . Compared with bare LDH coating, the composite coatings consisting of a MgAl-LDH primer and an outer CI layer showed highly compact surface structures without large pores and gaps, thereby indicating the enhanced capability to resist the penetration of corrosive species. Electrochemical tests revealed that the MgAl-LDH film modified with the newly synthesized CI exhibited higher charge transfer resistance and lower corrosion current density than films modified with commercial CIs. The highest enhancement in corrosion resistance was linked to the film’s ability to repair physical damage by forming precipitates through chemical complexation and adsorption of the CIs. These findings open up new opportunities for the design and synthesis of a thiophene-contained inhibitor to modify LDH films and to obtain a composite coating with superior corrosion protection.

Hierarchical CuCo-LDH/FeOCl nanocomposites for synergistic and stable superlubricity under elevated loads

Shan Li,Longlong Zhang,Bin Xu,Yameng Wan,Mengdan Wang,Hongyu Liu,Bingli Pan,Honggang Wang,Purna Prasad Dhakal

A CuCo-LDH/FeOCl nanocomposite for macroscopic superlubricity is designed. • Stable macroscopic superlubricity is achieved under elevated loads (up to 75 N). • An ultralow friction coefficient ( ca. 0.0037) is realized in PEG200. Achieving stable superlubricity under elevated loads remains a significant challenge due to the fragility of conventional lubrication interfaces. Herein, a hierarchical CuCo layered double hydroxide/FeOCl nanocomposite is rationally designed via a microwave-assisted method to realize macroscopic superlubricity under elevated applied loads. The ultralow friction coefficient of ca . 0.0037 and the maintained superlubricity under loads up to 75 N may be attributed to the synergistic effects of the layered architecture, interlayer interactions and reactions, and tribochemical processes. Detailed characterization suggests that tribochemical evolution occurs during sliding, accompanied by possible Fe-O-M (M = Cu, Co) interfacial interactions, which may facilitate shear-induced structural evolution and interlayer sliding. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect between FeOCl and CuCo-LDH may contribute to the formation of a protective tribofilm at the friction interface. Repeated start-stop tests indicate that the real-time COF mainly fluctuates within 0.001–0.0075, maintaining stable superlubricity. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance lubricating materials and offers a promising strategy for achieving stable superlubricity under elevated loads. NiFe-LDH-Decorated Ti-Doped Hematite Photoanode for Enhancing Solar Water-Splitting Efficiency

Shouli Bai,Shiyu Jia,Yingying Zhao,Pinggui Tang,Yongjun Feng,Ruixian Luo,Dianqing Li,Aifan Chen

Ti-doped α-Fe2O3 nanorods were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method, followed by a NiFe-LDH catalyst that was electrodeposited on the doped α-Fe2O3 nanorods to structure an integrating photoanode Ti:Fe2O3/NiFe-LDH for improving solar PEC water-splitting efficiency. The structure and properties of electrode materials were characterized and the PEC properties of photoanodes were measured. The results show that the photocurrent density of the photoanode enhances 11.25 times at 1.23 V (vs RHE) and the IPCE value enhances 4.10 times at 420 nm compared with pristine α-Fe2O3. The enhancement is attributed to the separating of photogenerated electron–hole, the increase of carrier density, and the acceleration of the carrier transfer rate due to the dual action of doping and catalysis.

Construction of Hierarchical NiCoP@NiFe-LDH Nanoflakes Heterostructure for High Energy Asymmetric Supercapacitor

Xinlei Wei,Shaoxing Su,Qingcheng Zhang

Graphical High energy supercapacitors : NiCoP@NiFe-LDH nanoflakes array has been grown on nickel foam as the binder-free electrode for supercapacitor, which delivers a high specific capacitance of 2216 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and good rate capability of 1038 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 , as well as a high energy density of 57.4 W h kg −1 and good cycling stability in asymmetric supercapacitor device. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are attractive electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical capacitances and adjustable compositions, but also subjected to their intrinsic poor electrical conductivity and easy structure collapse properties. To resolve these intractable issues, LDHs are usually integrated with high conductivity and specific surface areas (SSAs) matrixes. Herein, NiCoP@NiFe-LDH nanoflakes array has been successfully grown on nickel foam by a facile phosphorization and subsequent hydrothermal process. The hierarchical porous structure, large SSA, as well as the strong interfacial reactions between NiFe-LDH and conductive NiCoP layer has enabled NiCoP@NiFe-LDH to deliver quantities of electroactive sites, fast ion diffusion and facile electron transfer, hence remarkably boosting the supercapacitive performance. Therefore, NiCoP@NiFe-LDH electrode has achieved a high specific capacitance of 2216 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and retained 1038 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 , whose specific capacitance and rate capability are much higher than those of NiCoP and NiFe-LDH electrodes. In addition, NiCoP@NiFe-LDH is assembled with an activated carbon electrode to fabricate an asymmetric supercapacitor, which displays a high energy density of 57.4 W h kg −1 and good cycling stability with 88.2 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Therefore, the binder-free electrode composed of hierarchical NiCoP@NiFe-LDH nanoflakes array is promising for use in energy storage.

Novel CuMgAlTi-LDH Photocatalyst for Efficient Degradation of Microplastics under Visible Light Irradiation

Shengyun Jiang,Mingshan Yin,Huixue Ren,Yaping Qin,Weiliang Wang,Quanyong Wang,Xuemei Li

Microplastics (MPs) in the water system could easily enter the human body and pose a potential threat, so finding a green and effective solution remains a great challenge. At present, the advanced oxidation technology represented by photocatalysis has been proven to be effective in the removal of organic pollutants, making it a feasible method to solve the problem of MP pollution. In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of typical MP polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) by a new quaternary layered double hydroxide composite photomaterial CuMgAlTi-R400 was tested under visible light irradiation. After 300 h of visible light irradiation, the average particle size of PS decreased by 54.2% compared with the initial average particle size. The smaller the particle size, the higher the degradation efficiency. The degradation pathway and mechanism of MPs were also studied by GC–MS, which showed that PS and PE produced hydroxyl and carbonyl intermediates in the process of photodegradation. This study demonstrated a green, economical, and effective strategy for the control of MPs in water. Keywords:microplastics;photocatalysis;polystyrene;polyethylene;layered double hydroxide
