Multifunctional modified separators have the potential to effectively regulate Li ion deposition, suppress the growth of dendrite and improve the safety of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Here, we designed a separator, constructed by co-deposition of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on PP separator. Due to the introduction of polar functional groups such as amine groups, PDA/PEI-3 modified separator exhibits better electrolyte wettability, higher Li ion migration number (0.9), lower energy barrier and faster ion transfer kinetics. Electrochemical tests prove that PDA/PEI-3 modified separator has achieved better cycling stability at different current density in Li//Li symmetric cells and higher CE in Li//Cu cells. Meanwhile, the Li/LFP full cells show more excellent rate performance and long cycle performance (80%). SEM and XPS also prove that modified separator has achieved homogenized Li ions flux and more uniform LiF-rich SEI layer. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for functional separator to protect Li metal anode and improve safety performance of LMBs.

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are considered the most competitive next-generation energy storage batteries due to their high energy density and high safety. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) is an ideal solid-state electrolyte due to its high chain flexibility, high dielectric constant, and strong dissociation ability towards lithium salts. However, the application of PEO is severely hindered by drawbacks such as low ion conductivity at room temperature and low electrochemical window. In this work, we constructed a Li1.25Al0.25Zr1.75(PO4)3 (LAZP)/PEO composite solid-state electrolyte (CSSE) with improved ion conductivity, enlarged electrochemical window, and stable charge–discharge cycle performance. The CSSE leads to an obvious LiF layer and Li2CO3 formation at the interface of lithium metal. Meanwhile, the addition of LAZP reduces the side reaction between PEO and the lithium metal significantly and suppresses the deterioration of ion conductivity. In addition, we modified LiFePO4 (M-LFP), the cathode sheet of the ASSLMBs, by adding an appropriate proportion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), PEO and lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonimide) (LiTFSI) to improve the ionic and electronic conductivity inside the cathode of the ASSLMBs. The Li/CSSE/M-LFP full cell exhibits a specific discharge capacity of 152 mA h g−1 at 60 °C and 2 C rate and a capacity retention rate of 93.5% after 200 cycles at 1 C. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for increasing the specific capacity, rate ability and long-cycle performance of ASSLMBs.

Lithium-ion batteries, with high energy density and long cycle life, have become the battery of choice for most vehicles and portable electronic devices; however, energy density, safety and cycle life require further improvements. Single-functional group electrolyte additives are very limited in practical applications, a ternary polymer bifunctional electrolyte additive copolymer (acrylonitrile-butyl hexafluoro methacrylate- poly (ethylene glycol) methacrylate- methyl ether) (PMANHF) was synthesized by free radical polymerization of acrylonitrile, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate. A series of characterizations show that in Li metal anodes, the preferential reduction of PMANHF is conducive to the formation of a uniform and stable solid electrolyte interphase layer, and Li deposition is uniform and dense. At the NCM811 cathode, a film composed of LiF- and Li3N-rich is formed at the cathode-electrolyte interface, mitigating the side reaction at the interface. At 1.0 mA cm-2, the Li/Li cell can be stabilized for 1000 cycles. In addition, the Li/NCM811 cell can stabilize 200 cycles with a cathode capacity of 153.7 mAh g-1, with the capacity retention of 89.93%, at a negative/positive capacity ratio of 2.5. This study brings to light essential ideas for the fabrication of additives for lithium-metal batteries.

In recent years, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been extensively studied and applied in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and new energy storage devices. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), currently a research hotspot, inherit the high ionic conductivity of liquid electrolytes and great mechanical properties and safety of solid electrolytes, exhibiting great application potential. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible flame retardant GPE (PPC37) that forms a polymer network through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. During the charge–discharge cycle, the formation of a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI) facilitates the uniform electrochemical deposition of Li + and achieves a long life cycle without dendrites. PPC37 possesses high ionic conductivity (1.06 mS cm −1 at 25 °C) and robust mechanical properties (198% fracture length and 2.43 MPa fracture strength). The Li|PPC37|LiFePO 4 batteries presented great cycling stability with an initial capacity of 151.9 mAh/g and a discharge capacity retention of 86.4% after 500 cycles at a high current density of 3C at 55 °C. The excellent thermal stability, interfacial stability, flame retardancy, flexibility and electrochemical stability demonstrated with PPC37 demonstrate the safety of high-temperature batteries, indicating their great application potential in flexible electronic devices and high-temperature environments.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) with high energy density and superior safety have been recognized as next-generation energy storage systems and have attracted a lot of attention. Garnet-type oxide solid-state electrolytes, especially Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO), with high ionic conductivity, low activation energy and superior stability with Li, are among the most promising solid-state electrolyte materials. However, high interfacial resistance, uneven lithium deposition and lithium dendrite growth between Li/LLZTO interfaces have hindered the industrialization of SSLMBs. In this work, a novel mortise–tenon-like hybrid ionic/electronic conductive interface (Li/LZFC@LLZTO) is constructed, which is composed of LiF, LiCl, and a Li–Zn alloy through an in situ transformation reaction. As expected, the interfacial impedance of Li|LZFC@LLZTO|Li is significantly reduced from 128 Ω cm2 to 2.7 Ω cm2, the critical current density increases from 0.3 mA cm−2 to 2.1 mA cm−2, and a prominent cycling performance of 6600 h at 0.2 mA cm−2 or 900 h at 0.4 mA cm−2 is achieved. Consequently, both the Li|LZFC@LLZTO|LiFePO4 and Li|LZFC@LLZTO|LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cells exhibit excellent rate performance. Furthermore, Li|LZFC@LLZTO|LiFePO4 can maintain a high discharge specific capacity close to 140 mA h g−1 at 0.2C after 150 cycles of stable cycling. This work lays the foundation for developing garnet-based SSLMBs with high critical current density, low interfacial impedance and long-term cycling performance.

Designing highly active and durable electrocatalysts remain an ongoing challenge in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, the reductive IL/Ti 3 C 2 T x (FA) is produced in a water-free mixture of formic acid (FA), ionic liquid (IL) and LiF, subsequently, the simultaneous reduction encapsulation trap the Pd nanocatalysts and IL within bilayer carbide-derived carbon (CDC) to obtain Pd@IL/CDC(FA) with high metal loading up to 69.7%. Thereby, the featured active phases in Pd@IL/CDC(FA) impart potent chemical nanoconfinement to defend metals from dissolution and aggregation, boost mass and electron transfer, and mediate oxidation states and adsorption/desorption of metal Pd in the ORR. Instead of deactivation and Ostwald ripening, the catalytic performances of Pd@IL/CDC(FA) are gradually enhanced in an accelerated durability test up to 20 000 cycles. In a Zn–air battery, the Pd@IL/CDC(FA) cathode gives a specific capacity of 812.6 mAh g Zn −1 and a voltage loss of only 41 mV in galvanostatic discharge for 1000 h. The work opens new venues in controllably preparing high activity and durable electrocatalysts from in-situ generated CDCs.

Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSC) solid electrolytes, based on Argyrodite, have shown potential for developing high energy density and safe all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, challenges such as interfacial reactions, uneven Li deposition, and air instability remain unresolved. To address these issues, a simple and effective approach is proposed to design and prepare a solid electrolyte with unique structural features: Li 6 PS 4 Cl 0.75 -OF 0.25 (LPSC-OF 0.25 ) with protective LiF@Li 2 O nanoshells and F and O-rich internal units. The LPSC-OF 0.25 electrolyte exhibits high ionic conductivity and the capability of “killing three birds with one stone” by improving the moist air tolerance, as well as the interface compatibility between the anode or cathode and the solid electrolyte. The improved performance is attributed to the peculiar morphology and the self-generating and self-healing interface coupling capability. When coupled with bare LiCoO 2 , the LPSC-OF 0.25 electrolyte enables stable operation under high cutoff voltage (≈4.65 V vs Li/Li + ), thick cathodes (25 mg cm −2 ), and large current density (800 cycles at 2 mA cm −2 ). This rationally designed solid electrolyte offers promising prospects for solid-state batteries with high energy and power density for future long-range electric vehicles and aircrafts.

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) play a crucial role in promoting the development of lithium metal batteries , as they combine the high ionic conductivity of liquid electrolytes with the enhanced safety provided by solid electrolytes . However, traditional polymer electrolytes are typically poured using non-in-situ methods, which results in poor electrode-electrolyte contact and compromises their performance. In this paper, in situ thermal polymerization is utilized to incorporate di-pentaerythritol pentaacrylate (DPPA) and 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8-tridecafluorooctyl acrylate (TFOA) into PAN spinning porous membranes. Application of TFOA reduces the crystallinity of GPEs and thus enhancing the Li + transport capability, which enables the newly constructed GPEs to exhibit an ionic conductivity of 2.52 × 10 −3 S cm −1 and a lithium-ion transport number of 0.61 at 30 °C. Simultaneously, fluoro-containing groups actively contribute to the formation of a negative solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film full of LiF, ensuring the stable operation of Li symmetrical batteries for over 2000 h at a current density of 0.40 mA cm −2 . The capacity retention rate of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with commercial NCM811 cathodes reaches 88.2% after 300 cycles. We firmly believe that our newly designed gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) can offer a viable solution for high-voltage and high-rate LMBs.

Polymer electrolytes (PEs) synthesized from an in situ polymerization strategy are considered as promising candidates to improve interfacial compatibility. However, most in situ formed PEs still suffer from problems such as low lithium-ion transference number (tLi+) and insufficient ionic conductivity at room temperature (RT). Herein, a series of copolymer electrolytes (CPEs) consisting of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) and 1,3,5-trioxane (TXE) monomers are synthesized. Due to the additive of succinonitrile (SN), and the promoted dissociation of lithium salt, the obtained polymer electrolyte (SN-CPE) exhibits an excellent ionic conductivity (4.06 × 10−4 S cm−1) and a high lithium-ion transference number (tLi+ = 0.881) at RT, as well as a high voltage oxidation window of 5.1 V. Thanks to the in situ formed intimate contacted electrode/electrolyte interface, the symmetric Li/Li cell can achieve long-term cycling stability over 1500 h without a short circuit. A LiF-rich organic–inorganic composite layer is formed on both the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) as demonstrated by XPS, TEM, and SEM analyses. Thereafter, the LiFePO4/Li cell has a high capacity retention of 84.1% after 900 cycles at RT, and it can still work effectively at high temperatures (e.g. 80 °C). Furthermore, SN-CPE exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and safety in the LiCoO2/Li cell and LiFePO4/graphite pouch cell, which again supports the promising application of SN-CPE.
