MXene-carbon nanotubes-Cellulose-LiFePO4 based self-supporting cathode with ultrahigh-area-capacity for lithium-ion batteries

Guang-He Dong,Yu-Qin Mao,Yuan-Qing Li,Pei Huang,Shao-Yun Fu

Designing cathodes with more electroactive materials is a promising way to improve the energy density of batteries while it is highly challenging due to their low electronic/ionic transport, poor structural integrity, and irreversible Li + consumption in full-cell configurations. Herein, we demonstrate a self-supporting cathode based on 3 dimensional MXene-Carbon nanotubes-Cellulose-LiFePO 4 (3D-MCC-LFP). The 3D-MCC-LFP cathodes demonstrate some distinct advantages over conventional LFP cathode (Con-LFP), including higher LFP loading (120 mg cm −2 ) and faster electronic/ionic transport (1.587 S cm −1 /1.18 × 10 −11 cm 2 S −1 ), which result in better electrochemical performance. Such as, the 3D-MCC-LFP 10 cathode (LFP loading is 10 mg cm −2 ) offers a significantly higher capacity of 0.86 mAh cm −2 at 5 C (1 C=170 mA g −1 ) than Con-LFP 10 of 0.05 mAh cm −2 , and a higher retaining capacity of 1.45 mAh cm −2 after 500 cycles at 1 C than Con-LFP 10 (1.16 mAh cm −2 ). Meanwhile, the 3D-MCC-LFP 120 cathode demonstrates an ultrahigh areal capacity of 19.2 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the assembled 3D-MCC-LFP 60 /SnO 2 full-cell demonstrates a high areal capacity of 6.3 mAh cm −2 at 1.6 mA cm −2 . Considering its traits of ultrahigh area capacity, excellent electronic/ionic transport and self-supporting characteristics, the 3D-MCC-LFP cathode combined with SnO 2 anode is surely promising for high performance lithium-ion batteries.

In-situ solution phase synthesis of LiFePO4@VSe2 composite as highly active cathode for Li-ion batteries

Jean Pierre Mwizerwa,Changyong Liu,Kun Xu,Ning Zhao,Zhangwei Chen,Jun Shen

Surface engineering of transition metal oxide cathode materials for Li-ion batteries is highly important to achieve high-capacity retention, high-rate capability, and long-life term. In this study, VSe 2 nanosheets are prepared and used as a surface sensitizer to enhance the electrochemical properties of LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathode material. The LiFePO 4 @VSe 2 (LFP@VSe 2 ) composite is formed by anchoring 1D-LFP particles with the as-prepared 2D-VSe 2 nanosheets by using an in-situ solution phase technique. When the LFP@VSe 2 composites are used as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, the Li surface-controlled storage behavior of the batteries is reasonably enhanced. The performance is attributed to the improvement in the inherent Li-ion conductivity of LFP particles, thereby inhibiting surface diffusion drawbacks and decreasing charge transfer resistance. The exterior VSe 2 attached to the LFP serves as a second electrically conducting layer to increase conductivity into the entire electrode. Thus, these conditions enhance the electron transfer kinetics and surface stability of the LFP cathode. LFP@VSe 2 composite cathode exhibits an ultrastable specific capacity of 166.5 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles @ 0.1 C and can retain a specific capacity of 146.7 and 46.5 mAh g −1 after 700 and 2000 cycles respectively at a current rate of 0.3 C and 10 C.

Hydroxylamine mediated Fenton-like interfacial reaction dynamics on sea urchin-like catalyst derived from spent LiFePO4 battery

Wensong Zou,Jing Li,Ranhao Wang,Jingyi Ma,Zhijie Chen,Lele Duan,Hongwei Mi,Hong Chen

Herein, we converted spent LiFePO 4 battery to the sea urchin-like material (SULM) with a highly efficient and environment-friendly method, which can contribute to building a zero-waste city. With SULM as a Fenton-like catalyst, a highly-efficient degradation process was realized for organic pollutants with interface and solution synergistic effect. In our SULM+NH 2 OH+H 2 O 2 Fenton-like system, NH 2 OH can effectively promote the interface iron ( Fe(Ⅲ)/ Fe(Ⅱ)) and solution iron (Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ)) redox cycle, thus promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the ROS generation process and organic pollutants degradation pathway with the presence of NH 2 OH remains a puzzle. Here the detailed ROS generation mechanism and pollutants degradation pathway have been illustrated carefully based on experimental exploration and characterization. Therein, hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) are the main ROS for oxidizing and degrading organic pollutants. Notably, 1 O 2 can be converted from superoxide radicals (·O 2 ) in SULM+NH 2 OH+H 2 O 2 system. This study not only demonstrates the strategy of "trash-to-treasure" and "waste-to-control-waste" to simultaneously reduce the hazardous release from industrial solid waste and organic wastewater, it also provides new mechanistic insights for NH 2 OH mediated Fenton-like redox system.

Improving dual electrodes compatibility through tailoring solvation structures enabling high-performance and low-temperature Li||LiFePO4 batteries

Yuzhi Chen,Boliang Ma,Qingchuan Wang,Limin Liu,Luyao Wang,Shujiang Ding,Wei Yu

Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries have good stability and high energy density . However, they exhibit unsatisfactory low-temperature electrochemical performance . Due to the fragile interfacial passivation layers and sluggish kinetics, commercial electrolytes fail to simultaneously achieve acceptable stabilization with dual electrodes in low-temperature Li||LFP batteries. Herein, a novel localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with great dual-electrodes compatibility is proposed to match with the low-temperature Li||LFP batteries. With increasing local concentration, the FSI - sequentially replaces the solvent molecules and enters the first solvation sheath, forming the anion-dominated solvation structures. This effectively suppresses free solvents decomposition and constructs the anion-derived passivation layers with inorganic-rich components, further contributing to the rapid transport kinetics and endowing the LHCE with great dual electrodes compatibility. These dual-electrodes co-stabilization effects of the LHCE are originally clarified in the low-temperature Li||LFP batteries. The designed LHCE also delivers low freezing point (-99.8 ℃), high ionic conductivity (2.4 mS cm −1 at −40 ℃), and superior stability (>4.7 V vs. Li/Li + ). Hence, the Li||LFP batteries with LHCE possess superb cyclic stability at low temperatures, delivering a high discharge capacity of 120 mAh g −1 over 300 cycles at −20 ℃. Moreover, compared to commercial electrolytes, LHCE endows the Li||LFP batteries with superior low-temperature performances under practical conditions, including limited Li anode (3 mAh cm −2 ) and a wide temperature range (30 ℃ to −40 ℃).

Preparation of Micro–Nano-Structured FePO4·2H2O for LiFePO4 Cathode Materials by the Turbulent Flow Cycle Method

Xiang-lan Ming,Ruizi Wang,Teng Li,Xixi Wu,Liang-jie Yuan,Yu Zhao

The micro–nano-structured FePO4·2H2O was prepared from mixed solution of FeSO4 oxidized in diluted H3PO4 with H2O2 and NaOH solution in the turbulent flow cycle state at 90 °C. The resulting products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Constant current charge/discharge tests were adopted to investigate the electrochemical performance and the rate capability (from 0.1C to 5C) of the carbon-coated LiFePO4 composite materials prepared from the micro–nano-structured FePO4. The carbon-coated LiFePO4 composite materials deliver a high specific discharge capacity of 153.7 mAh·g–1, exhibit excellent cycle performance with 98.6% of the capacity retained after 30 cycles. This study demonstrates that the turbulent flow cycle method may be an economical and effective method for industrial production of fine and uniform micro–nano-structured FePO4·2H2O particles for LiFePO4 cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Recycle of spent LiFePO4 batteries: An eco-friendly closed-loop technique based on less solvent solid state reaction

Zhiliang Guo,Shuai Ji,Changgan Lai,Donghuai Zhang,Liu Nie,Yujie Hou,Yuli Zhang,Yifan Zhang,Ling Bai

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries have become one of the most popular batteries due to their high safety and low cost. However, the lifespan of LFP batteries is limited, making effective recycling processes crucial for environmental protection, resource conservation, and economic benefits. Less solvent solid state reaction (LSR) is reactions of solids with the help of a little solvent, which has advantage of almost 100% conversion of reactants and no waste generation. Herein, LFP (S-LFP) from spent batteries was first entirely decomposed to produce FePO 4 and LiH 2 PO 4 in H 3 PO 4 -H 2 O 2 leaching systems using the LSR method. Then, battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 was prepared by adding CaCl 2 and Na 2 CO 3 to LiH 2 PO 4 . As a result, the battery of regenerated LiFePO 4 (R-LFP) using recycled FePO 4 and Li 2 CO 3 exhibits superior electrochemical performance compared to those with unused LiFePO 4 , including a higher discharge specific capacity (140.7 mAhg −1 at 0.1C) and excellent cycle life, with a capacity retention of 98.6% over 500cycles at 1.0C. The LSR method provides a green and sustainable closed-loop recovery strategy for S-LFP cathode materials, which reduces the number of processing steps and chemical consumption, promotes resource conservation and environmental protection, and facilitates the sustainable industrial development of S-LFP batteries.

Constructing Electron/Ion Conductive-Enhanced Ultrahigh Loading LiFePO4 Electrodes Using Polytetrafluoroethylene and Carbon Nanotubes for High-Performance Batteries

Jiancong Cheng,ChuTao Wang,Kun Wang,Kai Lan,Chen Li,Jingmin Fan,Ruming Yuan,Mingsen Zheng,Quanfeng Dong

Thick electrodes represent an effective approach for augmenting energy density of batteries. However, their increased thickness invariably leads to longer electron and ion transport distance, limiting the utilization of active material and hindering practical application. Herein, an electron-conducting-enhanced and ion-conducting-enhanced strategy is presented for fabricating ultrahigh loading electrodes via constructing an interlaced 3D network. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) serve as extended electron pathways. Different from the polyvinylidene fluoride binder which needs to be dissolved into molecules for preparing electrode, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), however, exists as a separate phase inside the electrode, thus can become the extended pathways for electrolyte elongating due to its strong affinity to organic electrolyte. Note that based on the synergistic effect between CNT and PTFE, the latter can exhibit a form of long-distance extension fibers rather than agglomeration. Finally, a LiFePO 4 electrode with a record-high loading of 141 mg cm −2 is successfully prepared. This electrode exhibits outstanding area capacity (20.7 mAh cm −2 at 0.2 C) and cycling stability with impressive energy density of 224 Wh kg −1 and 517 Wh L −1 in a full cell (graphite anode). The findings present a novel strategy for achieving high energy density in lithium-ion batteries using existing material systems.

Preparation of LiFePO4/Carbon/PANI-CSA Composite and Its Properties as High-Capacity Cathodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

Chang Su,Guoqiang Lu,Lihuang Xu,Cheng Zhang

In this work, the spindle-shaped LiFePO4 coating with carbon layer (C-LFP) was successfully synthesized in glycerol solvent assisted by a mild heat-treatment at 600°C for 2 h. Then camphorsulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI-CSA) as the conductive polymer was compound with C-LFP to prepare C-LFP/PANI-CSA composite. The morphology, crystal structure and charge-discharge performance of the prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and galvanostatic charge-discharge testing. The results showed that the reactant concentration seriously affected the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the resulting LiFePO4 cathodes in lithium ion batteries. And a spindle-shaped LiFePO4 with suitable size has been successfully synthesized at the moderate reactant concentration of 0.5 M. After modified with PANI-CSA, the resulted C-LFP2/PANI-CSA composite cathodes displayed a significantly improved specific capacity and rate capability. And specially, that the C-LFP/10%PANI-CSA composite exhibited the best performance with an initial discharge capacity of 165.3 mAh·g−1 at a constant current of 0.1 C. Electrochemical impedance measurements also demonstrated that the coating of polyaniline significantly decreased the charge-transfer resistance of C-LiFePO4 electrodes.

Thermodynamically Guided Three-Stage Separation for Deep Aluminum Removal from Delithiated LiFePO4 Slag Toward Battery-Grade FePO4 Regeneration

Tuan Wang,Fangbing Li,Enhao Xu,Jie Hu,Haijun Xia,Hao Wu,Wenlong Cai,Yun Zhang,Kaipeng Wu

The recovery of high-purity iron phosphate (FePO 4 ) from lithium extraction slag (LES) is crucial for achieving closed-loop recycling of spent LiFePO 4 /C. However, this process is significantly challenged by the difficulty in removing aluminum impurities due to the similar chemical behavior of Fe 3+ and Al 3+ . Guided by thermodynamic principles, we developed a three-stage purification process for deep aluminum removal, consisting of “selective leaching-precipitation-dissolution/recrystallization.” In the first stage, highly selective aluminum leaching (96.3% Al vs. 21.6% Fe) is achieved under mild acidic conditions, leveraging the thermodynamic preference for aluminum dissolution over FePO 4 . During the second stage, by utilizing the tendency of Fe 3+ to precipitate more readily as FePO 4 ·xH 2 O than Al 3+ , precise pH control enables 95.5% iron precipitation, with only 4.02% aluminum coprecipitation. The third stage involves an in situ dissolution/recrystallization, which promotes efficient iron recrystallization (95%) while further removing residual aluminum, reducing its content by over 50% from an already low level. This enhancement is attributed to the higher crystallization tendency of FePO 4 ·2H 2 O compared to AlPO 4 ·2H 2 O. Ultimately, battery-grade FePO 4 with an aluminum content below 300 ppm is obtained. This work provides an industrially viable strategy for the deep removal of aluminum and the high-value utilization of LES derived from spent LiFePO 4 /C.

B-axis oriented alignment of LiFePO4 monocrystalline platelets by magnetic orientation for a high-performance lithium-ion battery

Jiang Zhou,Dongyun Zhang,Guanghan Sun,Chengkang Chang

Lithium-iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) monocrystalline platelets (LFP-P) with ac facet-preferred growing were obtained by a solvothermal method . Based on its anisotropy, a LiFePO 4 cathode (LFP-PM) with the b axis-oriented aligning was prepared by magnetic orientation. The structure, morphology and magnetic performance of the LFP-P were studied by X-ray diffractometry, scanning-electron microscopy, transmission-electron microscopy and superconducting quantum-interference device technologies. The LFP-P exhibited paramagnetic behavior and its b axis had the largest magnetic susceptibility , which made the LFP-P stack parallel to the magnetic field . It resulted in a higher lithium-ion diffusion coefficient of the LFP-PM (1.6855 × 10 −11  cm 2  s −1 ) compared with that of the LiFePO 4 cathode (LFP-PU) prepared without magnetic orientation (1.2538 × 10 −11  cm 2  s −1 ). The faster lithium-ion diffusion was contributed to a higher reversibility at 0.1 mV s −1 and higher discharge capacities of the LFP-PM at high rates ≥2 C. For the first time, LiFePO 4 monocrystalline platelets were made to align along b axis through magnetic orientation. It was proved to be an effective means of enhancing high rate performance.

LiFePO4-Zn battery system for electrochemical extraction of Li+ from salt lake brine with high Na+/Li+ ratio

Qian Zhang,Kang Chen,Xinwen Li,Yanan Wei,Ying Hu,Rongmei Liu,Guixiang Qian,Zhongliang Tian,Chao Yang

Lithium extraction from salt lakes represents a crucial approach to developing lithium resources and plays a vital role in advancing the global energy transition. China possesses abundant lithium resources in its salt lakes. However, the high sodium content present in salt lake brines presents a significant challenge to efficient lithium extraction. This study investigates the capability of the LiFePO 4 -Zn battery system for extracting lithium from salt lake brine with a high Na + /Li + ratio. The system demonstrates a significant rejection effect on Na + and exceptional selectivity for Li + , even in high-concentration sodium ion aqueous solutions. In a chloride aqueous solution containing 0.25 g/L of Li⁺ and 100 g/L of Na⁺, the sodium-to-lithium mass ratio decreased from 400 to 13.52 after three cycles, indicating that the extraction efficiency of Li⁺ achieved reached 90.28 %.

Unified Upcycling of Degraded LiFePO4 Materials toward a High-Performance LiMn0.25Fe0.75PO4 Cathode for High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries

Peng Wang,Jian Zhou,Jiawei Huang,Peng Yang,Yucheng Zhang,Zhuoli Yang,Guangren Wang,Da Guo,Jiapeng Song,Linfeng Fei

The approaching “decommissioning wave” of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has posed the efficient recycling of degraded electrode materials as a major challenge, among which the green and low-cost treatment of spent LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes with mixed degrees of degradation is of particular complexity. Presently, the prevailing hydrometallurgical method is designed to extract lithium from degraded LFP (D-LFP) materials, while the FePO4 (FP) residues are largely neglected. Herein, we demonstrate a unified upcycling strategy to manage those D-LFP materials by directly transforming the leached FP materials after complete lithium extraction of D-LFP into high-voltage LiMn0.25Fe0.75PO4 (LMFP) materials through a sequential hydrothermal and solid-state sintering treatment. The LMFP product features with a uniform particle size (220 nm) together with a homogeneous Fe/Mn distribution, which is remarkably beneficial for the electrochemical performance. As a result, the as-upcycled LMFP delivers a high discharge capacity (162.7 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C), a high capacity retention rate (97.5% after 800 cycles at 1 C), and a notable improvement in energy density (14.34%) compared with LFP materials. This simple and scalable workflow provides a refined route for the regeneration of D-LFP and is promising for dealing with large-scale spent LIBs.
