The separation of condensed aromatic compounds from coal tar residue (CTR), converted into cyclanes via catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) to produce essential blending components for coal-based jet fuel, represents a significant strategy for enhancing CTR's value. A highly efficient bifunctional catalyst was prepared by loading Ni nanoparticles (NNPs, ca . 10 %) on β /MCM-41 composite zeolite ( β / M) and denoted as Ni 10 % @ β / M . CTR was sequentially extracted with acetone/carbon disulfide, petroleum ether, and petroleum ether/methanol (5 vol% H 2 O) to obtain the soluble portion in methanol phase (PEEP M ). PEEP M mainly consists of phenols (64.8 %) and arenes (18.9 %). It was conducted to CHC over Ni 10 % @ β / M at 160 °C for 16 h under 5 MPa of an initial hydrogen pressure (IHP) to obtain CHPEEP M . The results indicate that the relative content of cyclanes in CHPEEP M reaches as high as 93.4 %. In Ni 10 % @ β / M , abundant defects, hierarchical porous composite zeolite with strong Lewis acid sites and uniformly dispersed NNPs play crucial roles in removing heteroatoms and hydrogenating aromatic rings (ARs), respectively. Benzyloxybenzene (BOB) is a model compound with a >C-O- bridge bond and ARs, used to study the catalytic activity of Ni 10 % @ β / M . BOB was completely converted into cyclanes at 160 °C for 2 h under 5 MPa IHP. The high yield of polycyclic alkanes is related to the coupling between the active fragments formed after >C-O- cleavage and the main structure. The synergistic transfer of H···H, δ+ H···H δ- , and H + generated by Ni 10 % @ β / M activation of H 2 is key to the hydrogenation of ARs via induced >C-O- bond cleavage, leading to the formation of saturated cyclanes.

This work is mainly concerned with the synthesis of Co-Zn nanocomposites by employing MCM-41 silica as hard template (CoZnO-HT) and its catalytic behavior toward to CO 2 reforming with ethanol. The physicochemical features of the as-prepared catalysts were probed through various characterization techniques, including XRD, TEM, BET, H 2 -TPR, and XPS. Indeed, CoZnO-HT catalyst possessed a highly ordered mesostructure with similarity to MCM-41 template and a higher specific surface area (304 m 2 /g) compared to the reference CoZnO-C sample (4.75 m 2 /g) prepared by the conventional impregnation method. Consequently, CoZnO-HT exhibited good performance at low temperature, and full ethanol conversion could be achieved at 550 °C as well as the negligible formation of byproduct acetone. In addition, this catalyst depicted good stability and no obvious deactivation was observed after 40 h time on stream tests under the stoichiometric feed ratio. Indeed, superior specific surface area and efficient mass transport within the mesopores might be critical factors assigned to better activity and stability for CoZnO-HT.

In the chemical industry palladium-based catalysts are commonly used to remove trace amounts of acetylene from ethylene feed. In this work atomic layer deposition (ALD) is utilized to synthesize uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles inside the meso-pores of a silica molecular sieve MCM-41. The space confinement effect from the internal channels of the molecular sieve leads to a very narrow size distribution (2–3 nm) of Pd nanoparticles and effectively prevents the particles from sintering during high temperature treatments. In selective hydrogenation of acetylene the ALD Pd nanoparticle catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performances under ambient temperature and pressure. The excellent performance of the ALD catalyst is attributed to small Pd nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in the meso-pores of MCM-41 so that more Pd surface sites are available for the catalytic reaction. The strong metal support interaction between Pd and TiO 2 can be induced by high temperature treatments, which suppresses the surface adsorption of both acetylene and ethylene, leading to decreased acetylene conversion and improved ethylene selectivity . The high temperature treatment also helps improve the stability of the catalysts.

The catalytic efficiency for methyl methacrylate (MMA) production via aldol condensation of methyl propionate (MP) and formaldehyde (FA) depends on the acid–base and structural properties of the catalyst. Inspired by this, a synergistic design strategy is implemented by fabricating Cs/Al-MCM-41 catalysts, where Al doping preserves ordered mesopores and tunes acid–base properties. This approach generates an optimal density of medium acid sites together with a balanced distribution of weak-to-medium base sites, leading to 90% MMA selectivity and a space-time yield of 0.29 g/(gcat·h). Moreover, the mesoporous confinement not only enhances the dispersion of Cs active species but also suppresses the condensation of coke precursors, thereby significantly improving the catalyst stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that basic Cs–O–Si sites and acidic Al sites cooperatively activate MP and FA, promoting aldol condensation. This work demonstrates that the integration of targeted acid–base regulation with structural confinement provides a rational catalyst design principle for efficient aldol condensation.

The coexistence of oxyanion-type and cationic heavy metals in complex aqueous systems poses a significant challenge for adsorption-based remediation. Herein, mesoporous silica-supported manganese‑lanthanum mixed oxides (Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41) were synthesized via an oxidation-coprecipitation strategy. The mesoporous silica framework effectively confined amorphous Mn/La oxides, suppressing oxide aggregation and manganese leaching. The as-prepared Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41 materials exhibited efficient removal of heavy metals, with maximum adsorption capacities of 57.3 mg g −1 for As(V), 141.6 mg g −1 for Cd(II), and 333.0 mg g −1 for Pb(II). By adjusting the Mn/La molar ratio, the adsorption behavior toward different metal species could be systematically regulated, with La-enriched compositions favoring As(V) uptake and Mn-rich materials exhibiting enhanced affinity toward Cd(II) and Pb(II). High removal efficiencies for all three heavy metals were maintained under multicomponent coexisting conditions. The composition-dependent adsorption behavior reflects a functional differentiation of Mn- and La-associated surface sites, enabling the simultaneous immobilization of oxyanion and cationic contaminants. Overall, this work demonstrates that integrating mesoporous confinement with compositional regulation provides an effective strategy for constructing stable and multifunctional adsorbents for multicomponent heavy-metal remediation.

Supported transition metal catalysts have played a critical role in the modern synthetic chemical industry. Herein, MCM-41 was chemically modified with amino groups and then used as the support of six transition metal cations . The chemical structures , microstructures and dispersions of these supported transition metal cations were carefully characterized by XRD , TEM and BET. The chelations of modified MCM-41 support with these transition metal cations were confirmed by FT-IR and XPS . The reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol was employed to evaluate the catalytic activities and recyclabilities of these supported transition metal catalysts. Meanwhile, their reactivities with o -Ps species were assessed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). It was found that the reduced o -Ps annihilation intensities (ΔI 3 ) were well associated with their catalytic activities while the o -Ps annihilation lifetime values (τ 3 ) were related to their catalytic recyclabilities. In all, the catalytic activities and recyclabilities of supported transition metal cations can be conveniently evaluated by their o -Ps annihilation properties. This method holds great potential in the design and preparation of highly active and stable supported transition metal catalysts.

The catalytic conversion of biomass-derived furfural (FAL) to cyclopentanone (CPO) via hydrogenation-rearrangement is a promising route for sustainable fine chemicals. Pt-based catalysts exhibit superior performance but suffer from limited control over hydrogenation behavior and reaction selectivity. To overcome these challenges, we designed a synergistic metal and metal oxide catalyst (1Pt3Ni/MCM-41). Introduction of NiO triggers strong electronic interaction with Pt, tuning both metal active sites and acidic centers. This interfacial electron transfer improves Pt dispersion on the mesoporous MCM-41 support, inhibits aggregation, and stabilizes the catalyst against sintering and leaching. Meanwhile, electron transfer from NiO modulates the electronic structure of Pt, promoting hydrogen dissociation and the formation of active hydrogen species. The charge redistribution also optimizes surface acidity, enhancing selective adsorption and activation of the C=O bond in FAL. Under mild conditions, the catalyst achieves 97.5% FAL conversion, 90.6% CPO selectivity, and a high activity of 883•h -1 . This work provides a rational strategy for designing high-performance bifunctional catalysts for efficient, selective upgrading of FAL to CPO.

The main issue for the development of CO2 capture in industry is its high energy cost. In this work, the regeneration of the chemical solvent 3-(diethylamino)propylamine (DEAPA) with or without catalyst was studied to further reduce the energy consumption. Three different catalysts (SAPO-34, MCM-41, and SO42–/TiO2) were applied into the DEAPA system to enhance the energy efficiency by lowering the heat cost per mole of CO2 released in a CO2 stripping process. The results show that solely DEAPA (without catalyst) can increase the CO2 desorption rate by 37.28%, increase the cyclic capacity by 38.02%, and reduce the heat duty by 14.85% compared to 5 M monoethanolnamine (MEA). In addition, for the catalyst–DEAPA systems, DEAPA-SAPO-34, DEAPA-MCM-41, and DEAPA-SO42–/TiO2 could lower the heat duty by 33.08%, 27.79%, and 22.41%, respectively, relative to 5 M MEA. The SAPO-34 catalyst also shows a better efficiency for increasing the CO2 desorption rate and cyclic capacity compared to the other two catalysts used. Moreover, a possible catalytic mechanism for CO2 desorption from the DEAPA–catalyst system is proposed based on the results from catalyst characterization. Through comparing the parameters of each catalyst, it can be inferred that the mesopore surface area (MSA) and the total acid sites (TAS) are the critical factors for an efficient catalyst. The combination of MAS*TAS could especially act as a key value to evaluate the performance of a catalyst for catalytic CO2 desorption.

Purpose Mesoporous silica (MSNs) have attracted considerable attention for its application in the field of drug delivery and biomedicine due to its high surface area, large pore volume, and low toxicity. Recently, numerous studies revealed that gut microbiota is of critical relevance to host health. However, the toxicological studies of MSNs were mainly based on the degradation, biodistribution, and excretion in mammalian after oral administration for now. Here in this study, we explored the impacts of oral administration of three kinds of MSNs on gut microbiota in rats to assess its potential toxicity. Methods Forty rats were divided into four groups: control group; Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 type mesoporous silica (MCM-41) group; Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 type mesoporous silica (SBA-15) group, and biodegradable dendritic center-radial mesoporous silica nanoparticle (DMSN) group. Fecal samples were collected 3 days and 7 days after the intake of MSNs and analyzed with high throughput sequencing. Gastric tissues in rats were obtained after dissection for the histological study. Results Three different MSNs (MCM-41, SBA-15, and DMSN) were successfully prepared in this study. The pore size of three MSNs was calculated similarly as (3.54 ± 0.15) nm, (3.48 ± 0.21) nm, and (3.45 ± 0.17) nm according to the BET & BJH model, respectively, while the particle size of MCM-41, SBA-15 and DMSN was around 209.2 nm, 1349.56 nm, and 244.4 nm, respectively. In the gene analysis of 16S rRNA, no significant changes in the diversity and richness were found between groups, while Verrucomicrobia decreased and Candidatus Saccharibacteria increased in MCM-41 treated groups. Meanwhile, no inflammatory and erosion symptoms were observed in the morphological analysis of the colons, except the MCM-41 treated group. Conclusion Three different MSNs, MCM-41, SBA-15, and DMSN were successfully prepared, and this study firstly suggested the impact of MSNs on the gut microbiota, and further revealing the potential pro-inflammatory effects of oral administration of MCM-41 was possibly through the changing of gut microbiota.

Hollow coral-like MCM-41-C was successfully prepared by adjust ethanol dosage. • Hollow coral-like 7wt%Al-MCM-41-C with rich weak acid site was prepared by impregnation. • Butene yield was 92.26% for 7wt%Al-MCM-41-C catalyst (300 °C, 90 min). • Due to hollow coral-like structure, 7wt%Al-MCM-41-C exhibits high catalytic stability. In this paper, the hollow coral-like ordered mesoporous MCM-41-C zeolites were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and their synthesis conditions were thoroughly investigated. Then, x wt%Al-MCM-41-C catalysts feature with hollow coral-like morphology were prepared by impregnation method, and used for the catalytic conversion of γ-valerolactone (GVL) to butene. The results showed that the introduction of Al species not only did not destroy the original special microscopic morphological structure of the MCM-41-C, but also co-existed on the surface and skeleton of the catalyst, resulting in a large number of weak acid sites. The optimal 7wt%Al-MCM-41-C catalyst has a specific surface area of 708.56 m 2 g −1 . The content of weak acid was 0.7262 mmol g −1 . At 300 °C, the GVL conversion and butene yield over the catalyst can reach 99.10% and 92.26%, respectively, within just 90 min of reaction. Meanwhile, the 7 wt%Al-MCM-41-C catalysts also demonstrated excellent catalytic cycle stability, and the butene yield remained above 90% after the 4th cycle. Active MnO x location (inside MCM-41 pores vs. external surface) was precisely regulated. • Remarkable ozone oversolubility phenomenon within nanoconfined water was discovered. • Nanoconfinement effect triggered intrinsic inversion of reaction mechanism. • MnO x /C/MCM-41 nanoreactors perform excellently for complex wastewater treatment. Catalytic ozonation is promising for emerging contaminants (ECs) abatement but hindered by intrinsic bottlenecks: low O 3 solubility and catalytic efficiency. Herein, a series of xMn/C/M41 nanoreactors were fabricated via a two-step ligand-adsorption and metal-anchoring strategy. After pyrolysis, the optimized 3.3Mn/C/M41 nanoreactors confined ultra-small (~2 nm) mixed-valent MnO x nanoclusters and carbon within the mesopores of MCM-41, while s-3.3Mn/C/M41 (simultaneous ligand-metal complex adsorption) has 5–10 nm Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the surface. 3.3Mn/C/M41 showed a 6.1 × 10 −2 min −1 sulfamethoxazole reaction rate (1.9 times that of s-3.3Mn/C/M41), > 93% removal of three other ECs, along with robust pH adaptability (3.5–10.5), matrix resistance and cycling stability. The excellent performance stems from the mesoporous confinement effects: 300-fold ozone oversolubility, rapid contaminant enrichment, and highly active MnO x nanoclusters with numerous undercoordinated Mn, oxygen vacancies, and Mn N motifs. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the catalytic mechanism transforms from a hydroxyl radical (for s-3.3Mn/C/M41) to non-radical of electron transfer and 1 O 2 . This work provides a novel strategy to address the intrinsic bottlenecks of catalytic ozonation, and offers a promising platform for efficient remediation of emerging contaminants in complex aquatic environments. A series of hybrid catalyst PMoW@HKUST-1@ZSM-5-MCM-41 was prepared in which H 3 PMo 6 W 6 O 40 were supported in the pore of micro/mesoporous materials ZSM-5-MCM-41 and HKUST-1 by one-pot method. Five types of ZSM-5-MCM-41 were prepared and corresponding ODS catalysts PMOW@HKUST-1@ZSM-5-MCM-41 were synthesized. The prepared catalysts were characterized and the most efficient catalyst was selected by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, N 2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM. The removal of DBT reached 98.13 % by using PMoW@HKUST-1@ZSM-5-MCM-41−2 under 60 °C with molecular oxygen as oxidant after 150 min. After desulfurization, the catalyst can be simply recovered and reused 7 times with an unnoticeable decrease in catalytic activity, indicating the successful combination of heteropolyacids and micro/mesoporous materials for desulfurization.
