Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are exploited in many applications of materials science and very recently were investigated as precursors or reagents for material synthesis. In a new way different from previous approaches, here we introduce for the first time the synthesis of metal oxide M x O y in the presence of M-free MOF acting partially as a sacrificial template and as a provider of doping metal atom. We demonstrate this approach in the case of ZnO prepared by a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of a Zn-free MOF like MIL-53(Al) or MIL-125(Ti). The resulting ZnO show low content of Al or Ti < 2% and properties are significantly different depending on whether MIL-53(Al) or MIL-125(Ti) are used or if no MOF is present. The nature and presence of MOF has different major effects on the morphology, the specific surface area of as prepared ZnO and also on the oxygen defects in its crystal structure. Corroborating the XPS, UV–vis DRS, PL, EPR and DFT studies evidence the role of such O-defects on band gap narrowing for samples calcined at 400 °C. These exhibit high efficiency in photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) compared to ZnO prepared in MOF-free conditions or previous literatures. The kinetics of MO degradation is different depending on the morphology, the specific surface and oxygen defects. The present data open the door to a new approach of the synthesis of metal oxides and a control of their properties.

Ferroptosis, a relatively recently discovered form of programmed cell death, has garnered considerable attention in the field of cancer drug discovery. However, effectively inducing ferroptosis at tumor sites and maximizing its therapeutic efficacy remains a formidable challenge. In the present study, we constructed the MIL-53@cMBP@ST/Ce6 (MMSC) nanocomplex to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of a ferroptosis-inducing drug. This was accomplished by modifying the cMBP peptide and encapsulating a small molecular ferroptosis inducer, sorafenib tosylate (ST), along with a photosensitizer, Chlorin e6 (Ce6), within the iron-based nanozyme MIL-53, which exhibits multiple enzyme-like activities. The glutathione (GSH) oxidase-like activity of MIL-53 depletes GSH, which is known to contribute to ferroptosis resistance in tumors. The catalase-like activity of MIL-53 catalyzes the decomposition of H 2 O 2 within the tumor, yielding oxygen to enhance the effect of photodynamic therapy. Concurrently, the photodynamic effect of MMSC generates singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), further amplifying ferroptosis. Additionally, modification of the cMBP peptide enabled MMSC to attenuate the MET pathway in MET-overexpressing tumors, thereby decreasing the antioxidant capacity of these cells to promote ferroptosis. Notably, transcriptomic analysis revealed that PDT enhances the ferroptosis pathway and modulates the expression of ferroptosis-related genes and MET signaling pathways-related genes, while Western Blot results confirmed the inhibition of GPX4 protein, a critical regulator of ferroptosis. In vivo, MMSC demonstrated a tumor-specific accumulation effect, as evidenced by fluorescence imaging, and significantly inhibited tumor growth by alleviating the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and enhancing ferroptosis at the tumor site. This study presents a novel strategy for the mechanistic investigation of augmented ferroptosis in tumor therapy.

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analytical platform was proposed for ultrasensitive detection of amyloid-β proteins (Aβ) based on the ECL resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET). In this work, gold nanoparticles-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C 3 N 4 @Au NPs) and palladium nanoparticles-coated Metal organic framework (Pd NPs@NH 2 -MIL-53) were synthesized, which were as ECL donor and ECL acceptor respectively. A strong cathode ECL emission was obtained from the g-C 3 N 4 @Au NPs when used K 2 S 2 O 8 as its co-reactant. Here, Au NPs not only was used as an accelerator to enhance and stabilize the ECL signal, but also a connector for attaching Aβ antibody. In addition, NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) was selected as a label material for supporting Pd NPs to synergistically increase the intensity and range of UV-visible absorption. The ECL signal of g-C 3 N 4 @Au NPs was intensely decreased when the ECL acceptor probe Pd NPs@NH 2 -MIL-53 was incubated onto the modified GCE by way of the specific recognition. Under the optimal condition, a wide detection range from 10 fg/mL to 50 ng/mL and a low detection limit of 3.4 fg/mL (S/N = 3) were obtained. In consideration of favorable specificity, stability and reproducibility, the proposed method was successfully applied for Aβ detection in actual human serum samples and could be a potential analytical tool for sensitive molecular trace detection in clinical analysis.

The facile and eco-friendly fabrication of a fabric with remarkable flame retardancy, anti-ultraviolet (UV), and superhydrophobic properties is of significant interest for multitask requirements. In this regard, herein, a nonfluorine, facile, and green method is reported for in situ synthesis of metal-organic frame (NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)) on hemp fabric (HF) for the preparation of multifunctional textiles. A homogeneous and compact coating of NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) crystals was deposited on HF, followed by modification with triethoxyoctylsilane (TEOS) to manufacture superhydrophobic NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)@hemp fabric (SM(Al)HF-9), significantly enhancing its water stability. The SM(Al)HF-9 exhibited superior superhydrophobicity properties, with a water contact angle (WCA) up to 156°. Furthermore, the surface of SM(Al)HF-9 cannot be adhered by dye solution and powder, indicating its good self-cleaning and anti-fouling abilities. The SM(Al)HF-9, characterized by a porous structure, effectively separates tetrachloromethane and n-hexane from water mixtures with a separation efficiency exceeding 97 %. The SM(Al)HF-9 has excellent UV-blocking properties, and the UV protection factor is as high as 105.44. Encouragingly, the SM(Al)HF-9 exhibited outstanding flame retardancy, as demonstrated by its self-extinguishing capability and a substantially improved limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 32.4 %. In comparison to raw HF, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat rate (THR) of the modified HF are reduced by 76.15 % and 54.32 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) has a significant advantage over other MOFs (e.g., ZIF-67, Ce-MOF, Ag-MOF, Fe-MOF and MIL-53(Al)) in improving the flame retardancy of HF. The highly efficient flame-retardant, anti-UV, and superhydrophobic fabric is promising in home and public decoration, and fire protection fields.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), the primary source of serum cholinesterase activity, is an indispensable biochemical marker for clinical diagnosis of liver function and organophosphorus poisoning. The requirement for bulky and expensive instruments represents a huge hindrance for point-of-care testing (POCT) of BuChE, especially in resource-limited settings. Herein, an easy-operated, economic, and portable photothermal (PT) biosensing platform for high-throughput BuChE detection was rationally designed. BuChE could “light up” the PT signal through in situ generation of Prussian blue (PB) by MIL-53 (Fe), which allowed us to translate biological signals into temperature signals. Such temperature change signals could be monitored at high throughput (six samples for a single measurement) by a miniature self-made integrated PT device via combining separable 96-well plates, a three-dimensional (3D) printed sample bracket, 808 nm lasers, and thermometers, satisfying the requirement for rapid on-site detection in a large batch with low cost. In addition, the large specific surface area, 3D network structure, and high porosity of MIL-53 (Fe) offered a beneficial platform for its reaction with enzymatic hydrolysate, resulting in high sensing sensitivity and low detection limit (0.3 U L–1), which was at least 20 000 times lower than the normal human serum BuChE activity. This facile, affordable, and broad applicability PT sensing platform provides a beneficial reference for the rational design of other disease diagnostic approaches suitable for POCT.

In this work, a novel and effective heterogeneous catalyst, the metal–organic framework MIL-53(Fe), has been synthesized for the purpose of activating persulfate (PS). The catalytic performance of MIL-53(Fe) activated under different vacuum conditions was investigated; the stability and reusability of the catalyst were evaluated, and the activation mechanism was also investigated. The results indicated that vacuum activation could cause variation of the FeII/FeIII relative amount ratio of the catalyst, and thus would change the catalytic activity of MIL-53(Fe), because FeII and FeIII CUS (coordinatively unsaturated metal sites) are alternative active sites. It was found that MIL-53(Fe)-2 exhibits good performance in PS activation and could be used for multiple cycles; an OG removal rate of 98% was obtained within 120 min (95.7% mineralization efficiency) and 94.3% was achieved in the fifth cycle. The mechanism of activation of PS by MIL-53(Fe) was also suggested, which involved a predominant heterogeneous reaction and an auxiliary homogeneous reaction. The findings of this study provide a new insight into the application of reactive metal–organic frameworks in activating persulfate for the degradation of environmental contaminants.

The fluoroquinolone-enrofloxacin (ENR) residue in animal-derived foods poses a significant threat to human health, thereby necessitating developing precise, efficient, and user-friendly detection methods. This study developed a dual-mode fluorescence-colorimetric immunosensing platform using the composite of bimetallic nanoparticles integrated with metal-organic frameworks (Au/Pt NPs@NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)). The Au/Pt NPs with biocompatibility and peroxidase-like activity were modified onto fluorescent NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) and conjugated with Ab 2 to construct signal probes. The platform enables dual-mode quantitative analysis through the competitive binding of ENR and ENR-BSA conjugate to signal probes. It demonstrated a wider linear range (0.08–180 ng/mL) and high sensitivity [LOD: 0.068 ng/mL (fluorescence), 0.066 ng/mL (colorimetric), and 0.074 ng/mL (smartphone-assisted color recognition)]. In real sample analyses, the recoveries ranged from 86.7 % to 106.7 %, with satisfactory stability (RSD ≤ 4.4 %, n = 3). The dual-signal mode facilitates results self-calibration, enhancing reliability, while smartphone-assisted color recognition enables on-site, convenient screening, offering great potential for ENR detection in complex food matrices.

In this paper, a polymer monolithic column based on poly (Butyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly (BMA-co-EDGMA)) doped with MIL-53(Al) metal–organic framework (MOF) was prepared using an in situ polymerization method. The characteristics of MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column were studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption experiment. Due to its large surface area, the prepared MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column has good permeability and high extraction efficiency. Using MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column for solid-phase microextraction (SPME), coupled to pressurized capillary electrochromatography (pCEC), a method for the determination of trace chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid in sugarcane was established. Under optimized conditions, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid have a good linear relationship ( r ≥ 0.9965) within the concentration range of 50.0–500 µg/mL, the detection limit is 0.017 µg/mL, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) is less than 3.2%. The spike recoveries of chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid were 96.5% and 96.7%, respectively. The results indicate that the method is sensitive, practical, and convenient. It has been successfully applied to the separation and detection of trace organic phenolic compounds in sugarcane samples. Graphical abstract

With the aim of solving the increasingly serious problem of environmental pollution and the energy crisis, in this work a novel NH2-MIL-53(Fe)/AgSCN (NMFA) composite photocatalyst was successfully prepared through a one-step chemical precipitation method. The prepared composites demonstrate an excellent photocatalytic performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible-light irradiation. Within 60 min, the degradation rate for CIP and RhB reached 90% and 100%, respectively, which was 1.84/3.33 times and 1.79/2.04 times greater than that of the single NH2-MIL-53(Fe) and AgSCN samples. Furthermore, the H2 production rate of the NMFA-5 composite was 4742 μmol g−1 h−1, which was 5.25 and 17.37 times greater than that of the pure samples. Owing to the combination of NH2-MIL-53(Fe) and AgSCN, the separation and transmission efficiency of the photon-generated carriers in the composites was improved, which was demonstrated using optical characterization and a series of electrochemical characterization techniques. In addition, a possible mechanism for the excellent photocatalytic performance of the NMFA composites is discussed. The work in this paper may provide a technical reference for the application of silver modified metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based composite photocatalysts for the treatment of environmental remediation.

The development of novel antibacterial strategies as alternatives to antibiotics is of great significance but remains considerable challenges due to the lack of safe, effective, and broad-spectrum agents. Here, we explored the potential of a biocompatible metal–organic framework Fe-MIL-53-NH 2 (FM) for reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based antibacterial applications. However, FM was found to be catalytically inert due to the very weak reducibility of Fe 3+ toward H 2 O 2 . To address this challenge, we incorporated a small amount of Co 2+ (0.98 %) into FM (CFM), successfully activating Fenton chemistry and achieving a notable 5.5-fold improvement in Fenton activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that a very small amount of Co 2+ doping significantly reduces the energy barrier of the Fenton reaction by shifting the d-band center to the Fermi level and optimizing the charge density of active Co atoms. We further enhanced the antibacterial properties of CFM by modifying it with the photothermal agent polydopamine (PDA), resulting in CFMP. Through the synergistic effects of ROS and photothermal properties, CFMP exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity, with bacterial eradication rates exceeding 99 % against both E. coli and S. aureus . Moreover, in vivo experiments demonstrated the exceptional efficacy of CFMP in sterilizing S. aureus -infected wounds, while causing negligible damage to other major organs. This study not only highlights the role of atom engineering in activating Fenton reaction, but also provides rational designs for a synergistic antibacterial strategy via powerful MOFs chemistry.

Dyes and antibiotics possess high stability and are resistant to microbial degradation, leading to their persistence in the natural environment. Photocatalysis is an effective and green degradation method. In this work, a novel Ag/AgCl/NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) (AAF) heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared using a solvothermal method, precipitation method, and photochemical reduction method, which effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The study shows that the composite consisting of 95 wt% Ag/AgCl/NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) (AAF-95) can photocatalytically degrade 99.4% of RhB within 15 min and 82.4% of TC within 12 min, achieving higher photocatalytic degradation activity than the individual materials. The main active species involved in the degradation are h + and •O 2 - . Based on Mott-Schottky tests, radical trapping experiments, and UV-vis DRS, a possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism and the advantages are proposed: AAF-95 broadens the light absorption range, and the NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) increases the specific surface area, thereby enhancing the catalytic reaction activity. The coupling between the heterojunction and the SPR effect promotes the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and lowers the catalytic reaction barrier. These are the reasons for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation capability of the composite.

Monitoring of gallic acid (GA) in food and biothiols in humans is crucial for body health. Nanozyme-mediated colorimetric strategy for evaluating them has been widely applied nowadays, however, the inferior efficient and susceptible single-signal recognition limit its further application. Herein, a sensitive biosensor was first constructed for bimodal detection of GA and biothiols based on CDs@MIL-53(Fe)-NO 2 , prepared through a facile and time-saving microwave treatment. Benefiting from the excellent fluorescent and electron transfer properties of CDs, CDs@MIL-53(Fe)-NO 2 exhibited significant enhanced blue fluorescence and oxidase-like activity, which could oxide colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine without H 2 O 2 , and the blue product could quench the fluorescence of composite. The dual-mode assay based on such bifunctional nanozyme showed an extremely sensitivity towards GA/ l -cysteine/homocysteine with the detection limit of 62/65/124 nM and 17/16/27 nM in colorimetric/fluorescent modes, respectively. The practicability in real samples and portability based on a smartphone of the analysis has been investigated with reliable results.
