Thermal Conversion of MOF@MOF: Synthesis of an N-Doped Carbon Material with Excellent ORR Performance

Mengxin Zhang,Dan Wu,Yingxiang Ye,Ling Wu,Zizhu Yao,Xiuling Ma,Lihua Wang,Zhangjing Zhang,Shengchang Xiang

Graphical Same but different : Two isomorphic metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) [FJU-40-H ( a ) and FJU-40-NH 2 ( b )] were used to construct core−shell materials MOF@MOF. This strategy has resulted in an N-doped porous carbon material that displays high catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here we propose a new strategy in which two isomorphic metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) [FJU-40-H ( a ) and FJU-40-NH 2 ( b )] are used to construct the core-shell material MOF@MOF. This strategy based on nitrogen doping and specific surface has resulted in an N-doped porous carbon (NPC) material in a one-step thermal treatment in N 2 atmosphere; this material displays high catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The materials were analyzed by SEM, XPS, Raman, specific surface area, pore size distribution and electrochemical measurements. It was found that NPC derived from the core-shell MOF@MOF can provide excellent catalytic ORR performance exceeding that of the single MOF. The onset potential is NPC-b@a-4h (−0.068 V)>NPC-a@b-4h (−0.075 V)>NPC-a-4h (−0.109 V)>NPC-b-4h (−0.113 V). Moreover, the results also show that the performance of NPC-b@a (n=4.15) is better than that of NPC-a@b (n=3.32), which means the different nitrogen content of ligands inside and outside of the core affects the ORR properties.

MOF etching and hydrogel confinement: a dual strategy for high-performance MOF-based synergistic piezo-photocatalysis

Jiaxin Jin,Yang Liu,Hainan Gao,Shule Zhang,Xiaocao Yan,Haolin Cui,Abliz Mukaddas,Tianhao Ji,Peiyuan Guan,Yunxuan Weng,Zhemi Xu

The synergistic piezoelectricity with photocatalysis in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a promising avenue for enhancing catalytic performance, yet it is often hampered by insufficient piezoelectric response and the inherent structural fragility of MOFs. Herein, we report a dual strategy to significantly boost the piezoelectric catalytic efficiency of MOFs. Through a morphology regulation with etching process, a hollow box-like MOF presents a higher structural asymmetry and greater deformation under internal stress, which markedly enhances the piezoelectric polarization. Meanwhile, to address the low recovery of powder-based catalysts, the optimized MOFs are embedded within a robust hydrogel matrix, effectively preventing structural disintegration and enabling excellent reusability with 20-cycle efficient degradation. Its catalytic efficacy is also validated in real industrial wastewater (with 97.1 % degradation rate), underscoring its potential for practical environmental remediation. This work not only provides a strategy to enhance the piezoelectricity of MOFs but also provides a solution to significantly improve the recyclability and lifespan of the powder catalysts.

MOF-on-MOF multi-enzyme cascade sensor for visual monitoring of uric acid in body fluids

Ruoxuan Jiang,Lei Pan,Fan Yang,Shudong Zhang,Dan Lin,Changlong Jiang

The detection of biomarkers is of great significance in the assessment of physical condition and disease progression. Developing rapid reliable biomarker detection technologies is necessary to meet the increasing health monitoring demands. Here, we developed an ultrasensitive sensing system for determining uric acid (UA), constituted by the metal-organic frameworks structure MIL-100(Fe)@MOF-Tm. The sensing mechanism is based on the enzymatic oxidation reaction catalyzed by uricase. Owing to the ideal loading capacity, the as-designed MOF-on-MOF system could load plentiful uricase to maximize the enzymatic reaction effect. The possible catalytic enhancement triggered by surface metal sites enables ultrasensitive and efficient response to the target analyte. With increasing UA concentration, uricase loaded on the MOF structure generates allantoin and H 2 O 2 . The Fe 3+ is reduced and undergoes the Fenton reaction, promoting the conversion from o -phenylenediamine (OPD) to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). Consequently, the sensor changes from blue to yellow fluorescence under UV and becomes deep yellow from colorless under natural light, respectively, achieving dual-model visual detection. Thanks to the reusable feature and stability, this sensor could be distinguished from other one-time probes with extraordinary reusage, selectivity, and low detection limit (3 nM) to UA. For the inherently suitability for constructing devices, the paper-based sensor and hydrogel sensing patch were developed and applied in multiple real samples detecting. This study formulates a reliable strategy for quantitatively monitoring UA, and furnishes new avenues for personal medical sensors.

Direct observation of tunable thermal conductance at solid/porous crystalline solid interfaces induced by water adsorbates

Wang Guang,Fan Hongzhao,Li Jiawang,Li Zhigang,Zhou Yanguang

Improving interfacial thermal transport is crucial for heat dissipation in devices with interfaces, such as electronics, buildings, and solar panels. Here, we design a strategy by utilizing the water adsorption-desorption process in porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to tune the interfacial heat transfer, which could benefit their potential in cooling or heat dissipation applications. We observe a changeable thermal conductance across the solid/porous MOF interfaces owing to the dense water channel formed by the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs. Our experimental and/or modeling results show that the interfacial thermal conductance of Au/Cu 3 (BTC) 2 , Au/Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (BDC) 6 and Au/MOF-505 heterointerfaces is increased up to 7.1, 1.7 and 3.1 folds by this strategy, respectively, where Cu 3 (BTC) 2 is referred to as HKUST-1 and Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (BDC) 6 is referred to as UiO-66. Our molecular dynamics simulations further show that the surface tension of Au layer will cause the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs to gather at the interfacial region. The dense water channel formed at the interfacial region can activate the high-frequency lattice vibrations and act as an additional thermal pathway, and then enhance heat transfer across the interfaces significantly. Our findings revealed the underlying mechanisms for tailoring thermal transport at the solid/porous MOF heterointerfaces by water adsorbates, which could motivate and benefit the new cooling system design based on MOFs.

Trace hydrogen sensing with ultra-high selectivity utilizing hierarchical Ni-BTC@ZIF-8 MOF-on-MOF heterojunctions

Shuang Li,Mengli Yan,Chenguang Yang,Chunyu Yang,Jianwang He,Yan Xu

Large-scale utilization of hydrogen for fuel cells and chemical manufacturing imposes urgent demands on hydrogen sensing materials with superior sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, we successfully fabricated a Ni-BTC@ZIF-8 MOF-on-MOF heterostructure using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizer and bridging agent. The hierarchical porous architecture enables size-selective microporous sieving in the outer ZIF-8 layer, facilitating H 2 permeation while blocking larger interfering molecules. This selective mass transfer optimizes H 2 accessibility at the sensing interface. Owing to the favorable mass-transport behaviour, the Ni-BTC@ZIF-8 sensor delivers an ultrahigh selectivity with a response value of 6.0 toward 20 ppm H 2 at 200 ℃, alongside an exceptionally fast recovery speed (∼6 s). Moreover, the device demonstrates excellent cycling stability and long-term reliability. This work further probes the underlying mechanism responsible for the improved H 2 -sensing performance of the MOF-on-MOF heterostructure, which arises from interfacial synergistic effects. Specifically, the intimate ZIF-8/Ni-BTC contact affords selective gas-transport channels from ZIF-8 and efficient electron-conduction pathways, with Ni-BTC serving as the active sensing layer for signal transduction. Such a synergistic interplay optimizes the coupling between molecular-sieving and sensing response. These findings provide a feasible and scalable paradigm for constructing novel high-performance hydrogen gas sensors.

High-valent Sn4+ modulated FeSn bimetallic MOF-on-MOF S-scheme heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Huijun Liang,Mengyao Ma,Chencong Li,Lixia Li,Xin Li,Mengjun Sun,Xiang Zhen,Hongjun Chen,Diandian Shi,Jianxun Dong,Xiaobing Wang

Sn 4+ modulated FeSn bimetallic MOF-on-MOF S-scheme heterojunctions are fabricated. • pH and Sn 4+ synergistically control catalyst morphology and composition distribution. • Optimized NM-FeSn exhibits superior N 2 photoreduction activity and stability. • Sn 4+ doping modulates Fe redox state and optimizes interfacial charge kinetics. • In-situ DRIFTS identifies the full NRR pathway on NM-FeSn heterostructure. Solar-driven photocatalytic nitrogen fixation (PNF) represents a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to the energy-intensive Haber–Bosch process. Nevertheless, its practical implementation is greatly restricted by sluggish N N bond activation, rapid photogenerated carrier recombination, and insufficient multi-electron/proton transfer kinetics. Herein, dual-phase MOF-on-MOF S-scheme heterojunctions with well-tuned Fe Sn bimetallic active sites (NM-FeSn) are rationally constructed by introducing high-valent Sn 4+ via a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy. Benefiting from the unique 4d 10 5s 0 5p 0 electronic configuration, the incorporated Sn 4+ effectively modulates the electronic structure of the NH₂-MIL framework, optimizes the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox ratio, and improves the structural and chemical stability of the catalyst. The optimal NM-FeSn delivers a prominent NH 3 evolution rate of 2.85 mmol L −1  g −1  h −1 and a high apparent quantum yield of 2.49% at 420 nm, which outperforms previously reported Sn-doped MOF-5 and ZIF-8 photocatalysts. On the basis of systematic photoelectrochemical tests, multi-spectroscopic characterizations, and in-situ DRIFTS measurements, the intrinsic S-scheme charge transfer mechanism and Fe Sn bimetallic synergistic effect are unambiguously revealed. Such synergistic effects significantly accelerate interfacial spatial charge separation, suppress photogenerated carrier recombination, and prolong carrier lifetime. This work systematically clarifies the electronic modulation mechanism of high-valent Sn 4+ doping and provides a versatile structural regulation strategy for the rational design of high-efficiency MOF-based heterojunction catalysts toward artificial nitrogen fixation and other energy conversion applications. Portable device integrated with a MOF-on-MOF aggregation-induced emission nanozyme for dual-mode formaldehyde detection

Yang LingFeng,Fu Zuyao,Shuaibu Abubakar,Xie Jing,Ding Zhaoyang

A zirconium-based MOF-on-MOF hybrid nanostructure (AIE-MOF@PCN-222, average size 3860 nm) was synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR, BET and TGA, which displays excellent peroxidase-like activity and stable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. The dual-mode colorimetric-fluorescent sensing of formaldehyde relies on the synergistic mechanism of specific Schiff-base condensation, nanozyme catalysis and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). After parameter optimization, the sensor presents a linear response of 4–40 µM, with detection limits of 14.5 nM (colorimetric) and 1.78 nM (fluorescent). A 3D-printed portable device integrated with PDMS microfluidics was developed for on-site detection. In spiked shrimp and fish samples, the sensor achieves recoveries of 97.60-103.50% (colorimetric, RSD ≤ 2.95%) and 98.20-102.40% (fluorescent, RSD ≤ 3.12%), with relative errors below 1.51% relative to HPLC. This strategy provides a promising dual-mode platform with potential for portable HCHO screening in food matrices for HCHO detection in food matrices. Core–Shell MOF-in-MOF Nanopore Bifunctional Host of Electrolyte for High-Performance Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Ahmed Eissa Abdelmaoula,Jun Shu,Yu Cheng,Lin Xu,Gang Zhang,Yangyang Xia,Muhammad Tahir,Peijie Wu,Liqiang Mai

Solid-state lithium-ion batteries with high safety are the encouraging next-generation rechargeable electrochemical energy storage devices. Yet, low Li + conductivity of solid electrolyte and instability of solid–solid interface are the key issues hampering the practicability of the solid electrolyte. In this research, core–shell MOF-in-MOF nanopores UIO-66@67 are proposed as a unique bifunctional host of ionic liquid (IL) to fabricate core–shell ionic liquid–solid electrolyte (CSIL). In the current design of CSIL, the shell structure (UIO-67) has a large pore size and a high specific surface area, boosting the absorption amount of ionic liquid electrolyte, thus increasing the ionic conductivity. Nevertheless, the core structure (UIO-66) has a small pore size compared to the ionic liquid, which can confine the large ions, decreasing their mobility, and selectively boost the transport of Li + . The CSIL solid electrolyte exhibits considerable enhancement in the lithium transference number ( t Li + ) and ionic conductivity compared to the homogenous porous host (pure UIO-66 and UIO-67). Additionally, the Li|CSIL|Li symmetric batteries maintain a stable polarization of less than 28 mV for more than 1000 h at 1000 µA cm −2 . Overall, the results demonstrate the concept of core–shell MOF-in-MOF nanopores as a promising bifunctional host of electrolytes for solid-state or quasi-solid-state rechargeable batteries.

Ultra-stable MOF@MOF nanoplatform for photodynamic therapy sensitized by relieved hypoxia due to mitochondrial respiration inhibition

Jiantao Yu,Qing Li,Zixiang Wei,Guiling Fan,Feiyan Wan,Leilei Tian

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with periodically arranged porphyrinic linkers avoiding the self-quenching issue of porphyrins in photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been widely applied. However, the porphyrinic MOFs still face challenges of poor stability under physiological conditions and limited photodynamic efficiency by the hypoxia condition of tumors. Herein, we fabricate the MOF@MOF structure with a protective MOF shell to improve the stability and relieve the hypoxia condition of tumors for sensitized PDT. Under protection of the MOF shell, the MOF@MOF structure can keep intact for 96 h under physiological conditions. Consequently, the tumoral accumulation efficiency is two folds of the MOF core. Furthermore, the MOF shell decomposes under acidic environment, and the loaded inhibitor of mitochondria pyruvate carrier (7-amino carboxycoumarins-2, 7ACC2) will be released. 7ACC2 inhibits the mitochondrial pyruvate influx and simultaneously blocks glucose and lactate from fueling the mitochondrial respiration , thereupon relieving the hypoxia condition of tumors. Under a 5-min laser irradiation, the 7ACC2 carrying MOF@MOF nanoplatforms induced doubled cellular apoptosis and reduced 70% of the tumor growth compared with the cargo-free MOF@MOF. In summary, the design of this stable and hypoxia self-relievable MOF@MOF nanoplatform will enlighten the future development of MOF-based nanomedicines and PDT. Statement of significance Though widely used for photodynamic therapy (PDT) in previous studies, porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) still face challenges in poor stability under physiological conditions and limited photodynamic efficiency due to the hypoxia condition of tumors. In order to solve these problems, (1) we develop the MOF@MOF strategy to improve the physiological stability; (2) an inhibitor of mitochondria pyruvate carrier, 7-amino carboxycoumarins-2 (7ACC2), is loaded to inhibit the mitochondrial pyruvate influx and simultaneously block glucose and lactate from fueling the mitochondrial respiration, thereupon relieving the hypoxia condition of tumors. In comparison with previous studies, our strategy simultaneously improves stability and overcomes the limited PDT efficiency in the hypoxia tumor tissue, which will enlighten the future development of MOF-based nanomedicines and PDT.

Controllable growth of drug-encapsulated metal-organic framework (MOF) on porphyrinic MOF for PDT/chemo-combined therapy

Bei Liu,Zechao Liu,Xijian Lu,Peng Wu,Zhaogang Sun,Hongqian Chu,Hongshang Peng

To improve the therapeutic effect of tumors, developing well-defined hybrid metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through MOF-on-MOF growth has attracted much attention. In this work, an in situ growth strategy was reported to assemble doxorubicin (DOX)-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) on the surface of Zr(IV)-based porphyrinic MOFs. Such an approach offers a high controllability in the thickness of the ZIF-8 layer without any requirement of surface modifications on porphyrinic MOFs. Impressively, the acidic pH-response degradation of ZIF-8 promoted the release of DOX in the acidic tumor microenvironment. Upon light irradiation, porphyrinic MOFs can harvest photons to produce plentiful singlet oxygen, thus leading to amplified chemo/PDT therapeutic efficacy. This work paves the way to utilize the hybrid engineering of MOFs for synergistic cancer therapy.

Lan Xiao,Jian Wen,Guanghui Wu,Pinghua Chen,Mengxue Wang,Hualin Jiang,Xinming Zhou,Jianan Yan

Rational design of efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is a key challenge in the development of various clean energy technologies. Here, flower-shaped FeCo-MOF-74/Mn-MOF-74 (FeCo/Mn mass ratio x:y, denoted as FCMx-y) electrocatalysts were synthesized through a two-step simple solvothermal methods and applied to the OER. These synthesized OER catalysts exhibited effective synergistic effects, high conductivity, electrochemical active surface area, carrier density, enhancing the intrinsic activity of MOF-74. Among them, the optimized FeCo-MOF-74/Mn-MOF-74 (named FCM1-2) required only a low overpotential of 280/382 mV to achieve 10/300 mA cm −2 in 1 mol/L KOH, outperforming control samples and commercial IrO 2 . Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated high electrocatalytic activity, rapid catalytic kinetics, and excellent stability. This research provides a reference for the industrial design of advanced OER electrocatalysts with high current density for sustainable energy technologies.

Fuhuai Cao,Xinlong Zhang,Yaya Wang,Moran Chen,Xinqi Hu,Mengkun Zhou,Rongmei Liu

The design of nanostructured electrode materials and the tuning of their components is one of the effective ways to improve the electrochemical properties of the materials. Here, we employed a cost-effective hydrothermal synthesis method to successfully construct NiFeSe@NiFe-MOF electrode materials with nanocoral rod-like structures. The unique coral rod-like structure provides a larger specific surface area for electron storage, exposing more electrochemical reaction active sites on the electrode surface. Through DFT theoretical calculations we found that the metallic property of NiFeSe@NiFe-MOF-2 are greatly enhanced compared with NiFe-MOF, which can lead to higher conductivity and electron transfer efficiency of the selenized material. Moreover, the introduction of selenium enhances the adsorption capacity of the material for anions in alkaline solution, which makes the structure of the MOFs more stable and obtains better electrochemical reversibility making the electrochemical performance of the electrode material in all aspects. Compared with the NiFe-MOF material, NiFeSe@NiFe-MOF-2 has excellent capacitance retention up to 81.0 % at different current densities (1 A/g-10 A/g), and the stability of the cycle performance is greatly improved up to 84.0 %. The assembled device NiFeSe@NiFe-MOF-2 // AC has excellent multiplication performance up to 92.7 % and stable electrochemical cyclability up to 99.7 %. Moreover, the energy density is 61.0 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 5060.0 W kg −1 . The coral rod-like NiFeSe@NiFe-MOF composites synthesized in this experiment possessed excellent charge storage capacity and stability properties. These results indicate that the electrode materials developed in this paper have good application prospects in supercapacitors.
