Photocatalyst-based degradation of antibiotic pollutants is recognized as a promising strategy for wastewater treatment and solar energy conversion and utilization. The hydrothermal-ultrasound synthesized Mg-doped BiOCl/BiOIO 3 heterojunction (MBB) exhibits superior light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation, achieving 87.69% removal in 60 min and outperforming pristine BiOCl and BiOIO 3 by 2.1- and 1.5-fold, enabled by band matching that suppresses charge recombination and improves carrier separation. Radical-trapping experiments reveal •OH and •O 2 ⁻ as the dominant reactive species responsible for TC photodegradation. Photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL) tests confirm that the MBB heterostructure has a faster migration rate of photogenerated carriers and a lower charge recombination rate. DFT calculations reveal that Mg doping shrinks the bandgap of BiOCl and optimizes the energy band arrangement of the heterojunction, thereby enhancing the light absorption capability. After five cycles, the MBB-0.2 (Mg-BiOCl/BiOIO 3 mass ratio 1:0.2) sample retains 76% degradation efficiency, without significant changes in phase and morphology, highlighting its stability for practical water treatment. This study attains the optimization of various photocatalysts through strategic doping and the construction of heterojunction structures, thereby maximizing the utilization rate of solar energy, providing a new research approach for the development of efficient solar conversion systems.

In this study, the polysulfide-intercalated Mg/Al hydrotalcite (Mg/Al-S 2 -LDH) with nanometer scale was prepared by a facile intercalation reaction to remove uranyl (VI) from aqueous solution. The as-synthesized adsorbents were characterized by a variety of techniques such as XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, laser particle size analyzer and XPS. Results indicated that the alkali content (governed by the HMT/Al molar ratio parameter f) significantly influenced the particle size, rather than the morphology, of the Mg/Al hydrotalcite. The particle size decreased from 9.37 μm to 0.91 μm with increasing f value. Batch experiment results indicated that Mg/Al-S 2 -LDH adsorbent prepared at f = 3 exhibited the excellent removal performance for uranyl (VI) with the removal rate approaching 100% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 343.64 mg·g −1 . The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption thermodynamics conformed to Langmuir isotherm adsorption model, indicating that the adsorption process was primarily chemical adsorption and monolayer adsorption. The adsorption mechanism revealed that uranyl (VI) ions were removed by the UO 2 2+ forms inner-sphere complexes with interlayer S 2 2− groups and the formation of an amorphous UO 2 S 2 -like phase on the surface. In addition, results from competitive adsorption suggested that Mg/Al-S 2 -LDH adsorbent processed excellent affinity to uranyl (VI) in the co-exist ions of Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , which revealed a potential application prospect in the treatment of U(VI)-contaminated wastewater.

Sunlight-driven valorization of benzyl alcohol (BA) offers a sustainable route to co-produce high-value organic chemicals and green hydrogen, yet the practical deployment of this photocatalytic strategy is severely hindered by unsatisfactory conversion efficiency and product selectivity. Here we report a facile magnesium (Mg) doping strategy to modify Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (abbreviated as ZIS) photocatalysts for boosted photocatalytic BA conversion. Under optimized doping content, the Mg-modified Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (denoted hereafter as Mg-ZIS) enables efficient BA transformation within 1 hour of solar irradiation, achieving a product yield of 94.4% and benzaldehyde (BAD) selectivity of 94%, alongside concurrent hydrogen evolution. The Mg-ZIS exhibits competitive apparent quantum yields (AQY) of 71.68% at 380 ± 20 nm and 16.63% at 420 ± 20 nm for BAD generation. Further analysis indicates that Mg dopants strengthen the Zn-S/In-S covalent bonding, which improves photocarrier separation and their surface accessibility. Mechanistic study further reveals that the exceptional BAD selectivity origins from a slow BAD backward reaction as Mg doping facilitates the competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) due to the negatively-shifted band edge alignments. This work validates the efficacy of metal doping in modulating the photocatalytic properties of sulfide-based photocatalysts, and provides a viable paradigm for the rational design and fabrication of high-performance photocatalysts toward efficient organic transformation and coupled hydrogen production.

Abstract Manganese-based oxides are attractive cathode materials for aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (AMIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness but suffer from poor conductivity, manganese dissolution, and structural degradation during cycling. In this work, CuMn2O4 is proposed as a dual redox-active cathode material for AMIBs. During discharge, lattice copper ions are extracted and in-situ reduced to metallic copper, which contributes to capacity and enhances electronic conductivity. Consequently, CuMn2O4 delivers highly enhanced capacity (211 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and cycling stability compared to monometallic Mn3O4. Moreover, the aqueous Mg∥CuMn2O4 full cell achieves an average discharge voltage of 1.80 V and stable cycling for over 50 cycles. This study confirms the feasibility of CuMn2O4 as a high-performance cathode material for AMIBs and provides insights for developing low-cost, high-performance multivalent-ion battery cathode materials.

Abstract Layered transition-metal oxide NaxTMO2 (TM = Ni, Fe, Mn, etc.) for cathodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) has gained significant research focus owing to its outstanding features, including low cost, ease of synthesis, and environmental benignity. However, it still suffers from poor structural stability, sluggish Na+ diffusion, and unsatisfactory cycling performance. To address these challenges, herein, we present an Mg doping strategy at different sites for P2–phase Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.5O2 with superior sodium-ion storage. The Mg doping on the Fe-site can significantly diminish the Jahn–Teller effect, hence enhancing structural integrity and boosting the electrochemical performance: the Na0.67Mg0.05Fe0.45Mn0.5O2 cathode shows excellent charge-transfer kinetics along with a splendid Na+-ion diffusion coefficient (DNa+) of 2.53 × 10–10 cm2 s–1; it achieves a splendid discharge capacity of 188.3 mAh g–1 with boosted cycling capability and rate performance. The present study affords a fabulous strategy for manipulating high-performance cathodic materials for SIB applications.

Elevated phosphorus levels in aquatic ecosystems have been identified as a critical driver of eutrophication processes, necessitating resource-recovery remediation strategies. Adsorption techniques show particular promise for nutrient recovery due to their selective binding capacities and operational feasibility. In this study, the Mg- and Ca-modified biogas residue-based biochar (Ca-Mg/BC) was successfully prepared via a “bimetallic loading-pyrolysis” modification strategy. The optimum temperature for the calcination of the material and the salt solution impregnation concentrations were determined experimentally through optimization of the synthesis conditions. Structural and chemical analyses of Ca–Mg/BC demonstrated that the material contains MgO and CaO. The specific surface area of Ca–Mg/BC was 8.49 times higher than that of the unmodified biochar (BC). The optimized Ca–Mg/BC achieved 95% phosphate removal rate (157.13 mg/g adsorption capacity). FTIR and XPS characterization results indicated the importance of Ca/Mg loading in phosphate capture. MgO and CaO were mainly loaded on the surface of the material and adsorbed phosphate through a chemical reaction. Crucially, the phosphate-laden biochar exhibited potential as a nutrient-enriched soil amendment, opening the material loop from wastewater treatment to agricultural applications. This sustainable strategy simultaneously addresses water pollution control and sustainable development, providing environmentally benign solutions compatible with industrial effluent treatment and sustainable agriculture practices.

Polonium was a highly toxic and radioactive nuclide commonly detected in wastewater from spent fuel reprocessing and lead‑bismuth-cooled reactor systems, making its removal essential for nuclear safety. In this work, lanthanum-modified magnesium‑aluminum layered double oxide (La-MgAl-LDO) was prepared by doping La(III) in Mg-Al layered double oxide (Mg-Al-LDO). Additionally, tellurium, which has similar chemical properties, was used as a substitute for polonium to investigate the adsorption performance. Under the optimized conditions (pH = 6, m/V = 0.2 g/L, and C 0 = 20 mg/L), La-MgAl-LDO achieved a maximum removal efficiency of 99% for tellurite. The adsorption of Te(IV) onto La-MgAl-LDO followed the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, indicating that the adsorption process was characterized by multilayer chemical adsorption. The Te(IV) adsorption mechanisms mainly include co-precipitation and surface complexation. In addition, the study confirmed that La 3+ reacted with Te(IV) to form a stable solid precipitate (La 2 Te 6 O 15 ), which played a crucial role in the removal of Te(IV) from aqueous solution.

The widespread acceptance of nonaqueous rechargeable metal–gas batteries, known for their remarkably high theoretical energy density, faces obstacles such as poor reversibility and low energy efficiency under high charge–discharge current densities. To tackle these challenges, a novel catalytic cathode architecture for Mg–CO 2 batteries, fabricated using a one-pot electrospinning method followed by heat treatment, is presented. The resulting structure features well-dispersed molybdenum carbide nanodots embedded within interconnected carbon nanofibers, forming a 3D macroporous conducting network. This cathode design enhances the volumetric efficiency, enabling effective discharge product deposition, while also improving electrical properties and boosting catalytic activity. This enhancement results in high discharge capacities and excellent rate capabilities, while simultaneously minimizing voltage hysteresis and maximizing energy efficiency. The battery exhibits a stable cycle life of over 250 h at a current density of 200 mA g −1 with a low initial charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.72 V. Even at incredibly high current densities, reaching 1600 mA g −1 , the battery maintains exceptional performance. These findings highlight the crucial role of cathode architecture design in enhancing the performance of Mg–CO 2 batteries and hold promise for improving other metal–gas batteries that involve deposition–decomposition reactions.

Due to the low hydration activity of steel slag, its mechanical properties are insufficient, which limits its strategic application in steel slag based cementitious composite. In this study, the promoting effect of calcined layered double hydroxide (CLDH) on the hydration process, mechanical properties, and microstructure of high-volume steel slag cementitious materials was systematically investigated. The results showed that the addition of CLDH significantly optimized the material’s performance. When the mass fraction of steel slag was 70 wt% and the CLDH dosage was 2.0 wt%, the 7-day compressive strength reached 42.5 MPa, indicating an increase of 23.9% compared with the control group. Microscopic characterization suggested that CLDH slightly enhanced the hydration reaction of steel slag and increased the generation of hydration products through the nucleation effect. The addition of CLDH demonstrated a change in the composition of C-(A)-S-H to a higher Al/Ca ratio. Meanwhile, the lamellar structure of CLDH effectively filled the pores and promoted the densification of the matrix. This research provides valuable insights for the high-value utilization of steel slag and the design of high-performance cementitious materials.

To explore the adsorption performance of antibiotics in different amphoteric clays loaded with magnesium (Mg) and dodecyl dimethyl betaine (BS) was used to modify bentonite (B), kaolin (K), and diatomite (D) to obtain different amphoteric clays (named as BS-B, BS-K, and BS-D, respectively). Then, Mg-loaded amphotropic clays (abbreviated as Mg-BS-B, Mg-BS-K, and Mg-BS-D, respectively) were obtained by loading Mg ions on BS-B, BS-K, and BS-D. The isothermal adsorption characteristics of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and oxytetracycline (OTC) were studied by batch treatment with B, K, and D as the controls, and the adsorption differences under different environmental factors (i.e., temperature, pH, and ionic strength) were compared. The results show that the following. (1) The TC, CTC, and OTC adsorptions of the tested samples were all suitable for Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, and the maximum adsorption capacities (q m ) were 1.70–5.21 mol/kg (TC), 1.80–5.94 mol/kg (CTC), and 1.81–6.28 mol/kg (OTC). Under the same modification conditions, the q m of TC, CTC, and OTC followed the order Mg-BS-B > Mg-BS-K > Mg-BS-D. (2) When the temperature changed from 25°C to 45°C, the adsorption amount of TC, CTC, and OTC on the tested samples increased, exhibiting a positive temperature effect. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of TC, CTC, and OTC was spontaneous, endothermic, and entropic-_increasing processes. (3) In the pH range of 2–10, the adsorption amount of TC, CTC, and OTC on each soil sample increased first and then decreased and reached the peak value at pH = 6. With the increase of the ionic strength, the adsorption amount of the three antibiotics decreased, and the decrease ranges were 15.17%–84.17% (TC), 16.07%–68.07% (CTC) and 16.30%–76.54% (OTC).

Experiments on the flame propagation of starch dust explosion with the participation of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 in a vertical duct were conducted to reveal the inerting evolution of explosion processes. Combining the dynamic behaviors of flame propagation, the formation law of gaseous combustion products , and the heat dissipation features of solid inert particles, the inerting mechanism of explosion flame propagation is discussed. Results indicate that the ultrafine of Mg(OH) 2 powders can cause the agglomeration of suspended dust clouds, which makes the flame combustion reaction zone fragmented and forms multiple small flame regions. The flame reaction zone presents non-homogeneous insufficient combustion, which leads to the obstruction of the explosion flame propagation process and the obvious pulsation propagation phenomenon. As the proportion of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 increases, flame speed, flame luminescence intensity, flame temperature and deflagration pressure all show different degrees of inerting behavior. The addition of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 not only causes partial inerting on the explosion flame, but also the heat dissipation of solid inert particles affects the acceleration of its propagation. The explosion flame propagation is inhibited by the synergistic effect of inert gas-solid phase, which attenuates the risk of starch explosion. The gas-solid synergistic inerting mechanism of starch explosion flame propagation by ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 is further revealed.

Flue gas torrefaction (FGT) is a feasible way to improve fuel properties and enhance gasification performance. Torrefaction inevitably causes CO 2 emissions. In this study, FGT integrated with gasification based on the circulation of Mg-additive (MgO-FGT-GS) was developed to capture CO 2 released during FGT and transferred it to gasification to achieve a higher effective carbon conversion efficiency (ECC). Firstly, FGT with Mg-additive (MgO-FGT) was conducted on distilled spirits lees (DSL) and the effect of different Mg-additive (MgO) ratios was explored. Based on the characterizations of DSL and Mg-additive before and after MgO-FGT, the mechanism of MgO-FGT was revealed, and the looping property of Mg-additive was investigated. A fixed-bed gasification experiment was finally performed to validate the MgO-FGT-GS process. The results show that the optimal MgO-FGT was obtained as the MgO: DSL ratio was 1:1. Under this condition, the torrefied DSL had the highest HHV of 16.20 MJ/kg and the lowest O/C ratio. In MgO-FGT, the MgO absorbed 15.75 % of CO 2 and changed into basic magnesium carbonate. Then in gasification, CO 2 was released by Mg-additive at 800 ℃, and the Mg-additive largely returned to MgO. The LHV of syngas of the MgO-FGT-GS was 9.22 MJ/Nm 3 , which was 1.3 times higher than raw DSL. Meanwhile, the tar yield decreased by 68.99 %, and the ECC increased by 1.5 times. Therefore, the MgO-FGT-GS process shows a great improvement in gasification and better utilization of CO 2 . This study provides a technological breakthrough for the full-component utilization and low-carbon conversion of biomass.
