Both the electrochemical and mechanical properties of solid-state electrolytes are crucial for achieving stable battery performance, while the widely studied NASICON-type electrolytes such as Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP) still suffer from poor conductivity and a tendency to Na metal penetration. To address these problems simultaneously, we propose an integrated chemistry-structure-mechanics design principle, in which aliovalent Sc/Mg co-doping (chemistry) regulates lattice framework and grain-boundary evolution (structure), thereby enhancing mechanical robustness (mechanics) without compromising ionic transport. The optimized sample (Na 3.4 Zr 1.7 Sc 0.2 Mg 0.1 Si 2 PO 12 ) achieves a high room-temperature conductivity of 1.26 × 10 −3 S cm −1 and a 25% increase in hardness compared with the Mg-free analogue. The solid-state cell assembled with this electrolyte (Na/Na 3.4 Zr 1.7 Sc 0.2 Mg 0.1 Si 2 PO 12 /Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 ) shows excellent cycling stability in a wide temperature range of 0-80 °C, and retains 90% of its initial capacity after 440 cycles at 30 °C and 1C. These results demonstrate that aliovalent co-doping to concurrently optimize lattice chemistry and ceramic microstructure is an effective route to high-performance NASICON electrolytes.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising candidates for fabricating ion-selective membranes towards Li + extraction from brines. However, most COF membranes feature nanoscale pores, limiting their capability to sieve angstrom-sized ions. Herein, a DG-TBB membrane with angstrom-sized, lithiophilic and positive channels was fabricated via the condensation of a small, positively charged amine (1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride, DG) with an aldehyde containing lithiophilic groups (2,4,6-trimethoxy-1,3,5-benzenetricarbaldehyde, TBB). For comparison, the DG-TFB membrane based on 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (TFB) without lithiophilic groups was adopted to clarify the role of Li + -affinitive sites, while the ODH-TBB membrane containing neutral oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) was employed to evaluate charge effect. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of Li + affinity and Donnan exclusion, DG-TBB membrane delivered the highest Li + permeation rate of 73.6 mmol m −2 h −1 and Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 1200, which were superior to DG-TFB (4.3 mmol m −2 h −1 , selectivity of 238) and ODH-TBB (64.9 mmol m −2 h −1 , selectivity of 39). Moreover, DG-TBB exhibited robust separation performance in diverse practical scenarios and for various mono-/divalent cations. This study demonstrates that the rational integration of angstrom-sized pores, lithiophilicity and positive charge into COF channels enables highly efficient ion separation.

Acid-responsive thick nanosheets for knee osteoarthritis therapy. • Dual delivery of H₂ gas and Mg 2+ ions in inflammatory joints. • H₂ scavenges ROS and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines. • Mg 2+ contributes to chondroprotection and cartilage matrix maintenance. • A gas-ion synergistic strategy to reprogram the joint microenvironment. The inadequacy of current Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) therapies lies in the challenges of effectively overcoming oxidative stress and repairing damaged joint cartilage. To address these challenges, we developed an innovative “gas-ion synergistic delivery” treatment strategy using two-dimensional magnesium boride thick nanosheets (MBNs). The MBNs, prepared via solvent-assisted exfoliation, continuously release hydrogen gas (H₂) and magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) in the mildly acidic microenvironment of KOA (pH 6.5), providing a dual therapeutic effect. Hydrogen shows strong antioxidant properties, effectively scavenging free radicals 2,2-azino -bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)), reducing intracellular ROS levels. Furthermore, MBNs significantly suppress the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α. This strategy leverages “gas antioxidation-ion regeneration” dual-mode synergy, offering low cost and exceptional biocompatibility. It presents an innovative solution with clear translational potential for microenvironment reprogramming and targeted therapy of KOA.

Membrane separation technology serves as an essential approach for the efficient and sustainable extraction of lithium from salt-lake brines, whose effectiveness crucially depends on the selective Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance. However, conventional nanofiltration (NF) membranes remain constrained by the trade-off between water permeability and ion selectivity. In this study, we proposed a two-step fabrication strategy that couples solution deposition with interfacial polymerization (IP), successfully constructing a positively charged Zr-His/PTF composite NF membrane with a thin selective layer and uniform pore size. Hydrated zirconia clusters (hydrous-ZrO 2 ) derived from inorganic zirconium salts were utilized to regulate the distribution of reaction sites via electrostatic anchoring, while the amphipathic structure of histidine was employed to restrict the diffusion of aqueous monomers. These two components synergistically modulated the IP process, enabling the precise regulation of the selective layer microstructure while significantly reducing organic reagent consumption. Under a high Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio of 30:1, the modified membrane achieved a synchronous enhancement in Li + /Mg 2+ separation selectivity (29.57) and water permeance (21.7 L·m −2 ·h −1 , 6 bar). Moreover, the membrane maintained stable separation performance and structural integrity across a wide Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio range (1:1 to 100:1) and throughout 100 h of continuous operation. Through the integration of fabrication methods, this study provides a straightforward, low-cost and environmentally friendly strategy for fabricating high-performance NF membranes.

Olivine-type LiMnxFe1–xPO4 (LMFP) is a promising high-voltage cathode for next-generation lithium-ion batteries; however, its commercialization is hindered by structural instability from Mn3+ Jahn–Teller distortion and sluggish ionic kinetics. Herein, we develop a novel gradient-insertion strategy to address these limitations simultaneously. Through a facile solid-state process, Mg2+ is incorporated into LMFP microspheres, creating a concentration profile. Structural characterization confirms the successful incorporation of Mg2+, predominantly occupying the transition-metal sites, without altering the primary structure or forming a coating layer. This targeted modification significantly improves electrochemical performance: the Mg-insertion cathode (LMFP-Mg) delivers a high capacity of 149.78 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C, with the Mn redox contribution increasing significantly from 40.3% to 53.2%. After 300 cycles at 1 C, LMFP-Mg retains 91.2% of its capacity, significantly outperforming pristine LMFP (80.5%). At a high rate of 5 C, LMFP-Mg demonstrates a 26.4% improvement in discharge capacity compared to LMFP. Mechanistic studies reveal that gradient Mg2+ insertion cooperatively stabilizes the bulk lattice, suppresses Mn3+ Jahn–Teller distortion, and enhances Li+ diffusion coefficient, while the Mg-rich surface mitigates transition-metal dissolution and interfacial side reactions. This work demonstrates that spatially controlled insertion is a promising strategy for designing high-energy-density, long-life olivine cathodes.

Dual-mode sensor uses CeO 2 NR@Pt and Mg 2+ -dependent DNAzyme for AFB 1 detection with broad linear range and low LODs. • Signal amplification via CHA and DNAzyme cycling boosts sensitivity and specificity. • CeO 2 NR@Pt show strong peroxidase activity, PEI/rGO@AuNRs enhance electrode performance. • Practical tests in peanuts and corn confirm high recovery rates and stability for real-world use. This study developed a dual-mode colorimetric/electrochemical aptasensor for detecting aflatoxin B1 (AFB 1 ) in food, utilizing cascade amplification of bipedal Mg 2+ - dependent DNAzyme and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA). The system employed CeO 2 nanorods (CeO 2 NRs) as blocking probes for toluidine blue (TB), with in-situ Pt modification enhancing peroxidase-like activity. Gold nanorods (AuNRs) and polyethyleneimine-modified reduced graphene oxide (PEI/rGO) served as substrate materials to optimize the sensing platform. After amplification, electrode-captured CeO 2 NRs@Pt blocked TB charge transfer while enabling colorimetric detection via peroxidase activity. The sensor achieved wide linear ranges (1 × 10 −4 -1 × 10 2 ng/mL electrochemical; 1 × 10 −1 -5 × 10 2 ng/mL colorimetric) with low detection limits (3.7 × 10 −5 ng/mL and 5.6 × 10 −2 ng/mL, respectively). The method demonstrated excellent specificity, stability, and recovery rates in real-sample analysis, offering a robust approach for food safety monitoring. Macallisterite, a functional material with excellent properties, is widely used in industries. However, the rapid synthesis of high-purity macallisterite with both high yield and uniform morphology remains challenging due to the complex polymerization of borate species during the production process. Herein, we propose a novel magnesium ion-induced strategy for the efficient synthesis of macallisterite by combining sonochemistry assistance and additive method. The polymerization mechanism of borate species under excess magnesium salts was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and DFT. It has been shown that chloride magnesium is the optimal inducer for the macallisterite synthesis as Cl − exhibits lower electrostatic interaction and spatial steric hindrance than SO 4 2− and NO 3 − . Sonochemical assistance significantly accelerated the nucleation and crystallization of macallisterite through kinetic conditions created by cavitation effects. Accordingly, the crystallization is promoted achieving a maximum yield of 97.92%. Raman and DFT study revealed that Mg 2+ ions can effectively induce the formation of the stable neutral complex cluster [Mg(H 2 O) 4 (B 6 O 7 (OH) 6 )] in the supersaturated solution, which lowers the reaction activation energy through charge transfer and coordination. Furthermore, dense macallisterite spherulites with uniform morphology and high purity can also be achieved by using sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) as additive. Based on these findings, this study not only elucidates a metal ion-induced crystallization mechanism but also establishes an efficient, green, and scalable synthetic route for high-quality macallisterite.

With growing demand for lithium resources, developing high-performance Li + /Mg 2+ separation methods for salt-lake brines has become crucial, especially the highly efficient energy-saving membrane technology. For the traditional nanofiltration (NF) membranes for mono−/multivalent ion separation, achieving simultaneously high permeance and selectivity for lithium extraction from brine remained a critical challenge. Herein, we proposed a kind of cationic covalent organic frameworks (COF), TpEBr nanosheets with positive charge and structural regulation capability as dual-functional regulator for polyamide (PA) NF membranes. The introduction of TpEBr as additive reduced the diffusion rate of polyethyleneimine (PEI), forming a thin and loose membrane. Additionally, quaternary ammonium groups on TpEBr increased the membrane's surface Zeta potential, significantly strengthening the Donnan exclusion effect. The optimized membrane exhibited a significant Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 46.4 with a 25% increase in permeance. Such dual-functional regulation strategy for constructing high-performance NF membranes proposed in this work is promising for future highly efficient lithium extraction from brines.

Magnesium batteries are attracting growing interest as next-generation energy storage technology due to their high safety, cost-effectiveness, and resource abundance. However, their development remains limited by sluggish Mg 2+ transport kinetics at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Herein, we propose an electrolyte design strategy that modulates the Mg 2+ solvation structure by introducing tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a co-solvent into a borate-based electrolyte, Mg[B(hfip) 4 ] (MBF) in dimethoxyethane (DME). THF, selected from a series of linear and cyclic ethers, has a comparable dielectric constant and donor number to DME, but its cyclic structure introduces steric hindrance that induces competitive coordination with Mg 2+ . This competition weakens Mg 2+ − solvent interactions, yielding a more labile solvation structure and enhanced desolvation kinetics. As a result, Mg||Mg cells employing the optimized MBF/1D1T electrolyte (DME: THF = 1:1, v:v) exhibit a significantly reduced Mg plating/stripping overpotential of 120 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , compared with 316 mV at 8 mA cm −2 with MBF/DME, along with exceptional cycling stability exceeding 1200 h. Furthermore, representative sulfide cathodes such as CuS and VS 4 demonstrate faster activation and improved high-rate performance in the presence of MBF/1D1T.

The monovalent cation exchange membrane (MCEM) plays a crucial role in strategic resource recovery fields such as lithium/magnesium separation and seawater softening. This study proposes a two-stage modification strategy of “nanoparticle deposition – quaternization cross-linking”: first, deposit the Polypyrrole -Polyethyleneimine (PPY-PEI) composite nanoparticles in situ on the commercial Cation Exchange Membrane (CEM) surface, and then undergo quaternization cross-linking to prepare a high-performance monovalent cation exchange membrane (MCEM). The rigid structure of Polypyrrole -Polyethyleneimine (PPY-PEI) nanoparticles completely avoids the traditional problem of monomer penetration, and the rate of membrane pore blockage is significantly reduced. Electrified nanoparticles form gradient nanochannels to achieve dual mechanism synergy: The surface positive charge layer repels and blocks Mg 2+ through the Donnan effect; 2–5 nm mesoporous channels facilitate K + transport through size sieving. Subsequent quaternization crosslinking strengthened the modified layer and increased the positive membrane charge density, leading to further improvement in perm-selectivity. The results show that the modified membrane achieves a breakthrough performance in the separation of K + /Mg 2+ : the selectivity reaches 6.9; the K + flux remains at 0.14/(m 2 ·s). Molecular dynamic simulation of the ion diffusion behavior confirmed that the presence of Polypyrrole -Polyethyleneimine (PPY-PEI) can accelerate the diffusion rate of K + while limiting the transport of Mg 2+ , providing a theoretical basis for the performance prediction of selective ion exchange membranes.

Polyelectrolyte multilayer nanofiltration (NF) membranes have garnered attention for their potential in Mg 2 ⁺/Li⁺ separation applications, particularly due to their positively charged nature and the versatility offered by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique. However, these membranes often face significant challenges in balancing high ion selectivity with adequate water permeability. Addressing these limitations, this study introduces a novel approach by grafting a zwitterionic material, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), onto polyacrylamide hydrochloride (PAH), creating a new cationic polyelectrolyte (TPAH). By cyclically depositing sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and TPAH onto a polyethersulfone (PES) substrate, we have successfully fabricated a high-performance NF membrane ( i.e. , (PSS/TPAH) n ) that demonstrates enhanced Mg 2 ⁺/Li⁺ selectivity with high water permeability. TMAO features shorter distances between its positive and negative charge groups and smaller dipoles compared to other zwitterions. These characteristics enhance its ability to resistance to salt effects and transfer charge from amine oxide to water molecule. Furthermore, the grafting of TMAO enhanced the hydrophilicity of TPAH and regulated the charge distribution of the polyelectrolyte. Compared to the control membrane (PSS/PAH) n , the optimized membrane (PSS/TPAH) n showed reduced rejection of LiCl from 60.9 ± 2.7 % to 35.9 ± 1.5 %, while that of MgCl 2 increased from 94.3 ± 1.6 % to 96.1 ± 0.7 %. Additionally, water permeability improved from 9.2 ± 0.9 LMH/bar to 16.1 ± 0.5 LMH/bar. Notably, the membranes exhibited an improved selectivity for Mg 2+ /Li + ions in synthetic saline, reaching a maximum of 30.5 ± 1.5, highlighting its potential for practical separation applications. Density functional theory simulations indicate that TMAO not only enhances Donnan effect and intensify ion dehydration of polyelectrolyte multilayers NF membranes but also increases their hydrophilicity. In general, these polyelectrolyte multilayers NF membranes exhibit considerable promise for multiple applications, such as seawater pretreatment, groundwater softening and lithium extraction.

Membrane consisting of high-throughput aligned ion channels has been pursued for precise Li + /Mg 2+ separation. Herein, an aligned amino-functionalized γ-cyclodextrin nanofiltration membrane was fabricated via a customized interfacial polymerization technique, where the orientation of cyclodextrin ion channels was elaborately tailored by controlling the reaction conditions. The as-fabricated membrane featured ultra-thin selective layer of ∼ 26 nm, average pore size of ∼ 0.72 nm, and ultra-stable positive surface charges. In particular, the aligned intrinsic cyclodextrin cavities in the membrane offered vertical shortcuts for preferential Li + transport. Taking advantage of these, superior membrane permselectivity was achieved with the water permeance of 6.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and the Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor up to 22.5, highlighting the great potentials in lithium extraction and other ion separations. Given its simplicity and generality, this customized interfacial polymerization strategy holds great promise for manipulating aligned transport channels in thin film composite membranes, thereby enhancing their performance in a wide range of applications including, but not limited to, desalination, water purification, resource extraction, and energy conversion.
