Background The filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei Rut-C30 is one of the most vital fungi for the production of cellulases, which can be used for biofuel production from lignocellulose. Nevertheless, the mechanism of transmission of external stimuli and signals in modulating cellulase production in T. reesei Rut-C30 remains unclear. Calcium is a known second messenger regulating cellulase gene expression in T. reesei. Results In this study, we found that a biologically relevant extracellular Mn2+ concentration markedly stimulates cellulase production, total protein secretion, and the intracellular Mn2+ concentration of Rut-C30, a cellulase hyper-producing strain of T. reesei. Furthermore, we identified two Mn2+ transport proteins, designated as TPHO84-1 and TPHO84-2, indicating that they are upstream in the signaling pathway that leads to cellulase upregulation. We also found that Mn2+ induced a significant increase in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration, and that this increased cytosolic Ca2+ might be a key step in the Mn2+-mediated regulation of cellulase gene transcription and production. The utilization of LaCl3 to block plasma membrane Ca2+ channels, and deletion of crz1 (calcineurin-responsive zinc finger transcription factor 1) to interrupt calcium signaling, showed that Mn2+ exerts the induction of cellulase genes via calcium channels and calcium signaling. To substantiate this, we identified a Ca2+/Mn2+ P-type ATPase, TPMR1, which could play a pivotal role in Ca2+/Mn2+ homeostasis and Mn2+ induction of cellulase genes in T. reesei Rut-C30.Conclusion sTaken together, our results revealed for the first time that Mn2+ stimulates cellulase production, and demonstrates that Mn2+ upregulates cellulase genes via calcium channels and calcium signaling. Our research also provides a direction to facilitate enhanced cellulase production by T. reesei.

Transition metal ions (e.g. Mn 2+ ) and lanthanide co-doped upconversion (UC) materials have attracted wide attention in recent years due to their promising application in multicolor display. Here, we report the hydrothermal synthesis and characterization of Mn 2+ doped monodisperse CaF 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microspheres . The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that Mn 2+ doping does not change the cubic phase of CaF 2 material but will lead to diffraction peaks shifting slightly towards higher angle due to the substitution of larger Ca 2+ by the relatively smaller Mn 2+ . Under the excitation of 980 nm continuous wave (CW) laser, these microspheres exhibit green-yellow-red tuning colors and remarkable enhancement of both red to green ratio (R/G) and red to blue ratio (R/B) when increasing Mn 2+ concentration from 0 to 30 mol%. The energy migration process between Ho 3+ and Mn 2+ was proposed and supported by time-decay and power dependence measurements of Ho 3+ UC emission. These upconversion materials may have potential applications in optical devices , color display, nanoscale lasers and biomedical imaging.

Self-calibrated optical luminescent thermometers were prepared based on Eu 3+ /Mn 2+ co-doped Zn 2 GeO 4 phosphors with controllable morphology via a facile hydrothermal synthesis process. The co-doped concentration of Eu 3+ ions in Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ played important roles in the evolution of the morphology and the formation of the dual luminescent emission mode. Depending on different excitation wavelengths ranging from 260 to 360 nm, the dual emission centers located at about 534 nm and 612 nm were ascribed to d - d transition derived from 4 T 1 - 6 A 1 of Mn 2+ ions and f - f transition originated from 5 D 0 - 7 F 2 of Eu 3+ ions, respectively, which gave rise to the excellent self-calibrating temperature sensing functions. The related luminescent and sensing mechanism of the Eu 3+ /Mn 2+ co-doped Zn 2 GeO 4 phosphors are also proposed. The as-obtained Eu 3+ /Mn 2+ co-doped Zn 2 GeO 4 phosphors had a high relative sensitivity ( S r ) of 1.96% ºC −1 between 20 and 80 °C, as well as stable reusability, demonstrating its superiority as a ratiometric luminescent thermometer for temperature sensing applications.

A variety of uniform and well-dispersed one-dimensional Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ phosphors have been synthesized via a facile solvothermal process with H 2 O/EG as solvent. During the synthesis process, the component of solvent and the addition of PEG surfactant play an important role in determining the structure, particle size, and morphology of the final product. Under ultraviolet light excitation, the pure Zn 2 GeO 4 sample shows bluish-white emission which is attributed to the native defects present in the Zn 2 GeO 4 host. When Zn 2+ ions are partially substituted by Mn 2+ , the as-synthesized Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ samples exhibit intense green emission that corresponds to the d-d transition ( 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 ) of Mn 2+ ions. The luminescence mechanisms of the Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ samples were investigated in detail by using the CASTEP code based on density functional theory (DFT). It is expected that the as-synthesized Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ phosphors can be potentially applied in lighting, optical displays, and optoelectronic devices .

ABSTRACT Mn 2+ doped CsPbCl 3 (Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 ) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their unique strong and broad orange-red emission band, presenting promising applications in the field of photoelectric devices. However, pristine Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs commonly suffer from low photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and stability issues. Herein, we introduced europium ions (Eu 3+ ) into Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs via the thermal injection synthesis method to obtain high performance Eu 3+ and Mn 2+ codoped CsPbCl 3 (Eu 3+ /Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 ) NCs. The maximum PL QY of the resulting Eu 3+ /Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs reaches up to 90.92%. It is found that the doping of Eu 3+ ions significantly reduces the non-radiative recombination caused by high defect states, and improves the energy transfer efficiency from exciton to Mn 2+ , thereby boosting the PL performance. Moreover, doping Eu 3+ ions notably improves the UV-light and water stability of Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs. We further demonstrate the application versatility of Eu 3+ /Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs in white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) and optical anti-counterfeiting applications. This work provides a valuable perspective for the attainment of high performance Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs and lays a foundation for the codoping of other lanthanide ions to adjust the luminescence properties of Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs.

Room-temperature green to orange color-tunable upconversion (UC) luminescence has been achieved from Yb3+/Mn2+ co-doped CaO by adjusting the doping concentration of Mn2+ ions and the temperature of the samples upon 980 nm laser diode excitation. In this material system, the green UC emission band centered at 508 nm and the wavelength-tunable orange UC emission band from 560 to 725 nm are realized at 980 nm excitation, which originate from the cooperative luminescence of Yb3+ pairs and the |2F7/2, 4T1(4G)〉 → |2F7/2, 6A1(S)〉 transition of exchange-coupled Yb3+–Mn2+ dimers, respectively. The characteristic Stokes and UC emission properties, UC luminescence decay behaviors, temperature-dependent UC emission properties, as well as the involved UC mechanism of CaO:Yb3+,Mn2+ are investigated and discussed in detail. This study offers a new method to design novel UC materials for lighting and display applications instead of using conventionally investigated lanthanide (Ln3+) ions, such as Er3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+.

Hydrogen generation via methanol steam reforming is a promising method for producing renewable energy. In this work, a series of Mn 2+ -substituted CuAl 2 O 4 spinels were prepared by solution combustion method, and the crystal structure, micromorphology, chemical constitution, reduction behavior, acidity, specific surface area and surface chemical state of the spinels were comprehensively characterized by various equipments. The obtained spinels were washcoated on Cu foams to prepare monolithic catalysts, and the catalytic performance of the catalysts was evaluated in a methanol steam reforming microreactor. Compared with the binary Cu–Al spinel, the Mn 2+ substitution led to a decrease in the particle size, a change in the chemical composition and reduction behavior, a decline in the acidity, an increase in the specific surface area, and an improvement in the surface chemical state. As a result, the release rate of active Cu from the Mn-containing CuAl 2 O 4 spinel was significantly slowed down and the formed nanoparticles were fine, which was believed to be in favor of maintaining a stable catalytic performance longer. Among the prepared catalysts, the monolithic catalyst loaded with Cu 0.4 Mn 0.6 Al 2 O 4 exhibited the highest activity and stability. The findings of this work suggested that introducing Mn 2+ might be a promising way to regulate the Cu releasing property for obtaining a better sustained release catalyst system.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) offer high photoluminescence quantum yields. However, their poor stability and aqueous-quenching of fluorescence limit their wider application, especially in biochemical detection. In this work, a simple and highly successful coating strategy was used to encapsulate Mn2+-doped CsPbCl3 PQDs in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), effectively increasing the water stability of PQDs. After dispersion in deionized water for 25 days, the CsPbCl3/Mn2+/PEG nanocrystals (NCs) retained 40% of their initial fluorescence intensity. In addition, due to the FRET mechanism, 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) can effectively quench the fluorescence of CsPbCl3/Mn2+/PEG NCs. Therefore, utilizing the excellent water stability of CsPbCl3/Mn2+/PEG NCs and their interaction with 4-NP, a fast and conservative fluorescent probe can be established, which can perform highly selective and ultrasensitive quantitative detection of 4-NP in aqueous solutions. In addition, the molecular weight of PEG used for encapsulation, the fluorescence intensity of CsPbCl3/Mn2+/PEG NCs, and the detection range for 4-NP vary. Fortunately, the detection limits are all lower than the drinking water concentrations allowed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This study also provides a theoretical basis and methodological support for the subsequent application of PQDs in the detection of water pollutants.

Recently, the splendid strategy of co-doping ns2 electron configuration ions with rare-earth ions in all-inorganic lead-free halide double perovskites has been proposed to overcome the weak absorption cross-section of the f–f transition of rare-earth ions and achieve efficient white emission. But few of them can really provide effective red emission in lead-free halide double perovskites, despite the wide variety of rare-earth ions, and lead-free halide double perovskites with co-doping rare-earth ions and doping ns2 electron configuration ions usually exhibit an unsatisfactory color rendering index due to the narrow characteristic emission peaks of rare-earth ions. To address this issue, Mn2+ ions with red wide peak emission were introduced into Cs2NaScCl6 simultaneously with Tb3+ ions and Sb3+ ions in this work. The white light emission was observed in Cs2NaScCl6:0.01Sb3+,0.12Tb3+,0.07Mn2+ under 336 nm excitation because the presence of energy transfer from Sb3+ ions to Mn2+ and Tb3+ ions enhances fluorescence performances of Mn2+ and Tb2+. The temperature-dependent spectrum of Cs2NaScCl6:0.01Sb3+,0.12Tb3+,0.07Mn2+ shows that it exhibits a stable white emission in the temperature range of 298–398 K, and it's emission intensity at 398 K only decreases by less than 18% of the initial intensity (at 298 K). Excitingly, WLED devices with a quite high color rendering index of 93.6, which is one of the best in lead-free halide double perovskites, and nearly standard white light CIE coordinates of (0.3425, 0.3435), have been fabricated by using Cs2NaScCl6:0.01Sb3+,0.12Tb3+,0.07Mn2+ and a 340 nm LED chip and can maintain a good white color stability at different working times and currents. These results indicate that Cs2NaScCl6:Sb3+,Tb3+,Mn2+ is an outstanding candidate for WLED applications.

Immunochromatography is a commonly used immediate detection technique, using signal labels to generate detection signals for rapid medical diagnosis. However, its detection sensitivity is affected by background fluorescence caused by the excitation light source. We have developed an immunochromatographic test strip using Zn2GeO4:Mn2+ (ZGM) persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) for immediate fluorescence detection and highly sensitive persistent luminescence (PersL) detection without background fluorescence interference. ZGM emits a strong green light when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) excitation, and its green PersL can persist for over 30 min after the excitation light is turned off. We modified the surface of ZGM with heparin-binding protein (HBP) antibodies to create immunochromatographic test strips for the detection of HBP as the target analyte. Under UV excitation, the chromatography test paper can be visually observed at concentrations as low as 25 ng/mL. After the excitation light source is switched off, PersL can achieve a detection limit of 4.7 ng/mL without background interference. This dual-mode immunochromatographic detection, based on ZGM, shows great potential for in vitro diagnostic applications.

All-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit great promise in optoelectronics and photovoltaics. However, their intrinsic low-thermal/oxygen/moisture stability and the rigorous synthesis procedures have limited the practical applications. Here, we present a facile, one-step, light-induced method to synthesize CsPbCl 3 :Mn 2+ NCs at room temperature by using carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) as the halide source. The corresponding formation mechanism of CsPbCl 3 :Mn 2+ NCs is revealed, where CsPbCl 3 :Mn 2+ NCs are formed through the direct incorporation of [MnCl 6 ] 4− octahedral into the perovskite lattice during the nucleation and growth process. Additionally, we demonstrate the in-situ growth of CsPbCl 3 :Mn 2+ NCs within mesoporous silica (mSiO 2 ) spheres to form CsPbCl 3 :Mn 2+ @mSiO 2 nanocomposites via the light-induced method, resulting in a remarkable improvement in high-temperature and long-time stability. As a prototype experiment, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) device is constructed using CsPbCl 3 :Mn 2+ @mSiO 2 nanocomposites, which exhibits a bright white-light emission with the CIE chromaticity coordinate of (0.352, 0.340). It is anticipated that light-induced synthesis method provides a straightforward strategy for synthesizing multifunctional halide perovskite nanocrystals and nanocomposites for versatile applications.

Cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX 3 NCs) doped with Mn 2+ brings attractive long-wavelength emission and flexible color tunability. However, modulating the exciton-to-Mn 2+ energy transfer efficiency poses a challenge, particularly when relying on traditional methods such as changing halogen composition or incorporating external cations, which often complicate the process. In this work, a simple photonic bandgap (PBG)-modulation strategy is applied to modulate the exciton-to-Mn 2+ energy transfer by constructing a sandwich “PC-Perovskite-PC” structure with two photonic crystal (PC) films and Mn 2+ doped CsPb(ClBr) 3 NPs. When the PBG and the host emission band change from deviation to coincidence, the lifetime of Mn 2+ decreases from 0.54 ms to 0.36 ms owing to the enhancing energy transfer efficiency by PBG effect. Meanwhile, the ratios of orange and blue emissions (O/B) increase from 1.36 to 1.6. In addition, the back energy transfer also can be modulated. When the PBG matches well with the Mn 2+ emission band, the lifetime of the host emission exhibits the largest value (1.25 ns) owing to back energy transfer from Mn 2+ the host. Meanwhile, the O/B value shows the smallest value (0.52) attributed to the decreased spontaneous radiation of Mn 2+ and the enhanced host emission. When PBG deviates from the Mn 2+ emission band, the lifetime of the host emission decreases but O/B value increases gradually. This work provides new strategy for the modulation of energy transfer in Mn 2+ doped CsPb(ClBr) 3 NPs.
