A novel red-emitting Rb2KGaF6:Mn4+ phosphor with octahedral particulate morphology was presented. The XRD Rietveld refinement results indicate that the phosphor crystallized into the cubic phase of Fm\overline{3}m space group with double perovskite structure. The photo-luminescence spectrum exhibits intense red emission lines with zero-phonon line (ZPL) and v6 peak locating at 620 and 628 nm respectively. The optical parameters of low color temperature (Tc = 3824 K) and high color rendering index (Ra = 90.2 ) from white LED imply its potential application in solid-state lighting.

Poor humidity resistance is a bottleneck problem to be solved urgently for Mn 4+ activated fluoride red phosphors. At present, some strategies such as outer coating, cation exchange (CE), and surface passivation (SP) have been developed, but the effect is limited. The key reason is that the easily hydrolyzed Mn 4+ ions on the surface are difficult to be completely removed. With the goal of achieving a significant improvement in the moisture resistance of fluoride, this work proposes a new idea of using the reduction-assisted surface recrystallization (RSRC) strategy to construct a real core-shell structure without Mn 4+ in the shell. The quantum efficiency (QE) of the K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ treated by the RSRC method is 99.95%. After boiling in water, the QE can even be maintained at 96.7%, which is significantly higher than that of the fluorides treated by CE (15.53%) or SP (62.64%) methods. The Mn-free shell is further determined by a combination of in-situ lift-out and STEM-EDX techniques. Finally, the aging results of LED devices in high temperature (85 °C) and high humidity (85%) environments further confirmed that the color stability of the K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ was significantly improved.

The mineral structure-inspired discovery of red phosphors has become a research hotspot that can help compensate for the missing red components in cold white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Herein, first the feldspar-type structure is utilized to develop narrowband red-emitting CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 :Mn 4+ /Mn 4+ , Mg 2+ phosphors. Rietveld refinement results confirm the Mn 4+ occupation of the distorted [Ca1O 6 ] octahedron, resulting in a strong nephelauxetic effect, and thus exhibits bright red luminescence with a narrow full width at half maximum (43 nm). Compared with CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 :Mn 4+ , the fluorescence intensity of CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 :Mn 4+ , Mg 2+ is further enhanced by up to 210% owing to the decreasing nonradiative decay rate from 2 E g excited state, which weakens the concentration quenching effect resulting from energy migration along the adjacently aggregated Mn 4+ . CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 :Mn 4+ , Mg 2+ shows preferable thermal stability with an ultrahigh quantum efficiency (90.3%), surpassing other current Mn 4+ -doped oxide phosphors and UCr 4 C 4 -type nitride phosphors. A fabricated prototype WLED obtains ideal warm white light with a low correlated color temperature (3081 K) and a wide color gamut covering 112% of the National Television System Committee standard. Guided by natural mineral-type structural prototypes, this study demonstrates the possibility of designing a uniquely distorted local structure to achieve a superior luminescence performance of Mn 4+ for warm WLEDs.

Searching for efficient Mn 4+ red phosphors for white lighting and display backlighting has drawn great attention. In this work, an efficient Mn 4+ -doped fluoroscandate, Rb 2 KScF 6 :Mn 4+ , with short fluorescence lifetime is prepared via a facile co-precipitation method. It was found that the nonequivalent occupation of Mn 4+ for Sc 3+ leads to the identifications of sharp red emissions, enhanced zero-phonon line, high quantum efficiency and short fluorescence lifetime upon blue light excitation. Thanks to the luminescent properties, good optical parameters of high color rendering index, low correlated color temperature, and acceptable color gamut were achieved by coating the red Rb 2 KScF 6 :Mn 4+ phosphor with yellow Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ or green β -SiAlON:Eu 2+ phosphor in various white light-emitting diodes, demonstrating its potential role for white light illumination and backlight display applications.

Lead halide perovskites have received extensive attention due to their excellent photoelectric and photonic properties. However, low stability is an obstacle to material production and optoelectronic applications. In this research study, CsPbBr3/Cs2SiF6:Mn4+ rivet nanostructured perovskites coated with ZnS and self-passivation layers have been synthesized. The rivet nanostructured perovskites are applied in tunable white light-emitting diode (WLED) devices and tunable flexible white electroluminescent (EL) devices. The red and green dual-wavelength tunable luminescence in the rivet nanostructured perovskites has been obtained via Cs ion sharing. Upon the addition of ZnS and a self-passivation aluminum layer coating on the surface of the rivet perovskites, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity and the stability increased by 588.7 and 323.6%, respectively. In addition, a series of spectrally tunable WLED devices with an InGaN blue LED chip and flexible white EL devices is fabricated using the CsPbBr3/Cs2SiF6:Mn4+/2ZnS/Al rivet nanostructured perovskites. The tunable WLED devices can produce standard white light and cold and warm white light. The tunable EL devices produce luminescence even at 60° bending. By studying the temperature-dependent PL spectra of CsPbBr3/Cs2SiF6:Mn4+/nZnS/Al rivet nanostructured perovskites, the energy transfer mechanism at cryogenic and room temperatures is analyzed. At the same time, the protection principle of the self-passivation coating on the CsPbBr3/Cs2SiF6:Mn4+ rivet nanostructured perovskites is discussed.

Plant growth LEDs have attracted broad attention in modern society, desperate for specific phosphors with a characteristic emission band. A novel Mn4+ and Dy3+ co-doped Y3Al4GaO12 phosphor were successfully prepared through a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction. A three band emission including red (625–700 nm), orange (550–607 nm) and blue (462–490 nm) is observed in these phosphors when excited under a near-UV lamp, which is ascribed to 2E → 4A2 of Mn4+, 4F9/2 → 6H15/2 and 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 of Dy3+, respectively. The three emissions match the absorption spectra of chlorophyll A and chlorophyll B well. Meanwhile, the energy transfer from Dy3+ to Mn4+ was confirmed by the luminescence spectra and lifetime analysis. Finally, an LED device was fabricated that consisted of a 365 nm ultraviolet chip and the Y3Al4GaO12:Mn4+,Dy3+ phosphor. The excellent properties indicate that the synthesized phosphor has a promising application in the optical agricultural industry.

Modulating the local environment around the emitting ions with component screening to increase the quantum yield and thermal stability is an effective and promising strategy for the design of high-performance fluorescence materials. In this work, smaller Lu3+ was introduced into the La3+ site in a Mn4+-activated LaAlO3 phosphor with the expectation of improving the luminescence properties via lattice contraction induced by cation substitution. Finally, a La1–xLuxAlO3:Mn4+ (x = 0–0.04) perovskite phosphor with a high quantum yield of 86.0% and satisfactory thermal stability was achieved, and the emission peak at 729 nm well matches with the strongest absorption peak of the Phytochrome PFR. The favorable performances could be attributed to the suppressed cell volume and superior lattice rigidity after the substitution of Lu3+. This work not only obtains a highly efficient La1–xLuxAlO3:Mn4+ (x = 0.02) phosphor, which holds great potential for application in plant-cultivation light-emitting diodes, but also provides an applicable strategy for further investigation of far-red-emitting phosphors.

In recent years, Mn 4+ doped oxide phosphors have attracted extensive attention in the field of indoor plant light supplementation due to their red emission. In this study, a rare earth-free red phosphor, Li 3 Mg 2 NbO 6 (LMN):Mn 4+ , was prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The resultant phosphor exhibited red emission within the 600–800 nm band, with a peak at 668 nm, when excited by 351 nm and 468 nm. DFT calculations of charge density and formation energies determined that Mn 4+ tends to occupy the Mg 2+ sites, leading to a charge imbalance that affects the luminescence intensity of the material. In light of the foregoing, charge compensation strategy was adopted in order to achieve charge balance through excessive doping of Li + , Na + and K + alkali metal ions. The optimal doping concentrations of Li + , Na + and K + were determined to be 0.35, 0.4 and 0.3, respectively. The luminescence intensity of LMN:Mn 4+ phosphors was found to increase to 453%, 500% and 708% of the initial intensity. Concurrently, the quantum efficiency (QE) of the phosphor LMN:Mn 4+ was enhanced from 33.8 % to 48.1%, 57.04% and 69.19%, respectively, by means of additional doping with Li + , Na + and K + . At 100 °C, the emission intensity of the LMN:0.01Mn 4+ phosphor was found to be 73.6% of that at room temperature (25 °C). The thermal stability of additional Li + , Na + and K + by charge-compensated doping is slightly reduced. Finally, LMN:0.01Mn 4+ , 0.3K 2 CO 3 phosphor and a blue light chip were used to prepare the phosphor conversion light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). The electroluminescence spectra of the pc-LEDs exhibited a blue and red double emission, corresponding to the absorption bands of chlorophyll B and photochrome P R . This finding indicates that pc-LEDs have considerable potential for application in the field of plant growth LED lamps.

Mn4+-doped fluorides are renowned for their highly efficient narrow-band red emission, making them promising candidates for white light-emitting diodes and wide-gamut displays. However, performance degradation at high power levels and insufficient moisture resistance limit their application. Herein, a millimeter-sized hexagonal Rb2GeF6:Mn4+ single-crystal phosphor with superior photoluminescence quantum efficiency (QE ≈ 97%) was synthesized via a one-step saturated crystallization method. The single crystal demonstrates high stability in aqueous environments compared to its powdered counterpart, attributed to reduced hydrolysis of the [MnF6]2– group. The calculated band structure of Rb2GeF6 reveals it to be a nonmagnetic, direct band gap semiconductor with a 5.89 eV band gap. A white LED device incorporating the red-emitting crystal and yellow-emitting Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ achieves a high color-rendering index of 84.5 at a low correlated color temperature of 2296 K, demonstrating the potential for advanced warm white LEDs. This research provides a foundation for the development of high-efficiency Mn4+-doped fluoride single-crystals for lighting applications.

KGe 2 F 6 :Mn 4+ phosphors exhibit a narrow emission peak at 625 nm with a FWHM of only 3-5 nm, enabling their widespread use in smartphones, televisions, and automotive displays. However, as an ionic crystal consisting of K + and [GeF 6 ] 2- units with relatively weak electrostatic bonding, KGF easily develops surface water films under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, leading to K + migration and accelerated luminescence degradation. In this study, a rapid Plasma-Assisted Film Deposition (PAFD) technique was employed to construct a nanoscale silica layer with a thickness of approximately 200 nm on KGF phosphor particles, followed by hygrothermal aging tests at 100 °C and 100 % RH. Arrhenius kinetics modelling and analysis revealed that the coating increased the apparent activation energy from 20.05 to 21.35 kJ mol −1 , suggesting improved resistance against hygrothermal degradation. First-principles calculations confirmed that water was physisorbed on all crystal facets, with the (021) surface exhibiting the highest adsorption energy (−0.80eV). Furthermore, 5 ps ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations demonstrated that adsorbed water induced K + displacement from lattice sites, a phenomenon that intensifies with increasing temperature. The nanoscale silica coating effectively suppresses this migration. These findings demonstrate that the rapid plasma-assisted coating strategy significantly enhances KGF's hygrothermal stability and ensures reliable performance in demanding harsh environments.

Far-red phosphors have garnered significant research interest due to their essential function in plant growth lighting. Nevertheless, the development of plant lighting technologies is constrained by the relatively low efficiency and inadequate thermal stability of oxide‑based deep-red-emitting phosphors. In this work, we synthesize the far-red Mn 4+ -doped double perovskite-structured oxides Ba 2 MgWO 6 (BMWO: Mn 4+ ) by the high-temperature solid-state method and enhance its luminescence through dual-substitution strategy. By substituting Mg 2+ with Gd 3+ and Ca 2+ , the emission intensity of BMWO: Mn 4+ has been increased from the initial 100 to 425 and 3716%, respectively, while the quantum yield improves from 0.2 to 89.9%. Meanwhile, BaCa 0.9 Gd 0.1 WO 6 : Mn 4+ (BC 0.9 G 0.1 WO: Mn 4+ ) also possesses excellent thermal stability, retaining 78.2% of its initial intensity at 423 K. Based on crystal structure analysis and electron cloud characterization, we found that the enhancement of Mn 4+ luminescence originates from the modulated crystal field environment of Mn 4+ , which affects the lattice symmetry of the [WO 6 ] octahedra as well as the vibrational stretching modes. Finally, the pc-LEDs based on BC 0.9 G 0.1 WO: Mn 4+ exhibits strong overlap with the plant phytochromes P R /P FR . This work offers both a strategy for tuning Mn 4+ emission and a practical example for designing artificial lighting systems in plant cultivation.
