MoP/Mo2C@C: A New Combination of Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution over the Entire pH Range

Lu-Nan Zhang,Si-Heng Li,Hua-Qiao Tan,Shifa Ullah Khan,Yuan-Yuan Ma,Hong-Ying Zang,Yong-Hui Wang,Yang-Guang Li

During the exploration of highly efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), a promising and challenging strategy is to fabricate composite nanocatalysts by finely tuning metal and/or nonmetal element components. Herein, we report a new HER electrocatalyst, which is composed of molybdenum phosphide and molybdenum carbide composite nanoparticles (NPs) coated by few-layer N-doped graphitic carbon shells (denoted as MoP/Mo2C@C). Such a new combination mode of electrocatalysts is realized by a one-step annealing route with the mixture of a Mo/P-based polyoxometalate (POM) and dicyandiamide. On the basis of this method, the simultaneous phosphorization and carbonization in a nanoscale confined space can be easily achieved by the use of POM as the molecular-element-regulating platform. MoP/Mo2C@C exhibits more remarkable HER performance over the whole pH range than those of MoP, Mo2C, and the physical mixture of MoP and Mo2C. The low overpotentials of 89, 136, and 75 mV were obtained at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in the media of pH = 0, 7, and 14, respectively. Furthermore, MoP/Mo2C@C shows a long-term durability for 14 h over the entire pH range (0–14). Because of the protection of carbon shells, such composite electrocatalyst also possesses better transition-metal tolerance exemplified by Fe2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ than that of 20% commercial Pt/C. This work demonstrates the advantage of POM precursors in adjusting the component and properties of nanoscale composite electrocatalysts for HER, which may suggest new options for the fabrication of highly efficient composite electrocatalysts.

Modulating hydrogen intermediate on Ru@Mo2C/N-doped carbon fibers boosts ampere-level alkaline/acidic hydrogen evolution performance

Xianqiang Yu,Yuezhu Wang,Mingze Xia,Li Deng,Ruikai Qi,Mingbin Gao,Mengxiao Zhong,Xiaofeng Lu

Manipulating the electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts to optimize the adsorption behavior of hydrogen intermediate (H*) is essential for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), representing a key objective in advancing efficient hydrogen (H 2 ) production. Herein, we have engineered the electronic configuration by coupling ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles with molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C)/N-doped carbon fibers (NCF) to greatly enhance the electrocatalytic alkaline/acidic-universal HER performance. The obtained Ru@Mo 2 C/NCF catalyst exhibits ultralow overpotentials of 182 and 193 mV at an industrial-grade current density (1 A cm⁻ 2 ) in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively, significantly surpassing commercial Pt/C and many traditional HER catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrates an exceptional long-term stability in both alkaline and acidic conditions, even greatly better than Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical analysis reveals that the coupling of Ru with Mo 2 C/NCF optimize the H* adsorption and facilitates H 2 releasing. Furthermore, a zinc-water (Zn-H 2 O) battery is assembled to realize highly efficient and simultaneous H 2 and electricity generation, demonstrating its practicability.

Mo2C embedded in S-doped carbon nanofibers for high-rate performance and long-life time Na-ion batteries

Li Li,Zhi Chen,Ming Zhang

We succeed in obtaining Mo 2 C embedded in S-doped carbon (Mo 2 C/SC) nanofibers by electrospinning and sulfuration. The use of S-doped carbon not only provides more additional Na + storage active sites to enhance its sodium storage performance, but also increases electrons migration and ions diffusion. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the electrode exhibits excellent rate capacities of 242 and 96 mA h g −1 from 0.1 A g −1 to 5 A g −1 . Excitingly, the high-rate performance is superior, achieving 102.7 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 over 1000th cycle. This project provides ideas for the development the high-rate and long-term stable of the Mo 2 C in energy storage devices.

Melamine-assisted synthesis of ultrafine Mo2C/Mo2N@N-doped carbon nanofibers for enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction activity

Chen Jing,Pan Anqiang,Zhang Wenchao,Cao Xinxin,Lu Rou,Liang Shuquan,Cao Guozhong

Noble metal-free electrocatalysts with high activity are highly desirable for the large-scale application of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Mo 2 C-based nanomaterials have been proved as a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts owing to the Pt-resembled d-band density and optimal intermediates-adsorption properties. However, the aggregation and excessive growth of crystals often occur during their high-temperature synthesis procedure, leading to low catalytic utilization. In this study, the ultrafine Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure with large surface and interface confined in the N-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) was obtained by a melamine-assisted method. The synergistic effect of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and plenty active sites exposed on the surface of ultrafine nanocrystals improves the electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the N-CNFs ensure fast charge transfer and high structural stability during reactions. Moreover, the in-situ synthesis method strengthens the interfacial coupling interactions between Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and N-CNFs, further enhancing the electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. Owing to these advantages, Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N@N-CNFs exhibit excellent HER performance with a low overpotential of 75 mV at a current density of 10 mV cm −2 in alkaline solution, superior to the single phased Mo 2 C counterpart and recently reported Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N based catalysts. This study highlights a new effective strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts via integrating heterostructure, nanostructure and carbon modification.

Synthesis of hollow Mo2C/carbon spheres, and their application to simultaneous electrochemical detection of hydroquinone, catechol, and resorcinol

Ren Hailong,Zhang Yang,Liu Longlong,Li Yangguang,Wang Dongyang,Zhang Ruyue,Zhang Wenjing,Li Yingchun,Ye Bang-Ce

Hollow molybdenum-dopamine spheres were synthesized and thermally annealed to form hollow Mo 2 C/C spheres. The morphology, composition and electrochemical behavior of spheres were characterized. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with the spheres and then used for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), and resorcinol (RS). Distinct oxidation peaks can be observed for HQ, CC and RS at potentials of −0.004 V, 0.10 V and 0.44 V (vs. SCE). The responses to HQ, CC and RS are linear in the concentration ranges of 0.3~1000 μM, 2~2000 μM and 3~600 μM, respectively. The corresponding detection limits are 0.12, 0.19 and 1.1 μM (at S/ N  = 3). The sensor was then applied to quantify HQ, CC, and RS in tap water, river water and vegetable juice. Recoveries ranged from 93.5% to 106.5%. The modified GCE is repeatable, reproducible, stable and selective for HQ, CC and RS. Schematic presentation of a novel electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with  hollow Mo 2 C/ carbon spheres for determination of hydroquinone, catechol, and resorcinol.

Enhanced mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of graphene nanoplatelets/Cu composites by in situ formation of Mo2C nanoparticles

Siyuan Guo,Xiang Zhang,Chunsheng Shi,Enzuo Liu,Chunnian He,Fang He,Naiqin Zhao

Poor mechanical interfacial bonding between graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and Cu is unfavorable to the comprehensive properties of the GNPs/Cu composites. Molybdenum carbide coating graphene nanoplatelets (Mo 2 C@GNPs) were prepared by impregnation reduction combined with in situ reaction to improve the interfacial bonding of Cu matrix composites . Compared with GNPs/Cu composites, Mo 2 C@GNPs/Cu composites exhibit excellent mechanical properties . It is due to the fact that Mo 2 C not only improves the interface bonding between the GNPs and Cu matrix, but also increases the strength of composites by dislocation strengthening as nanoparticle reinforcing phase. In addition, the conductivity of Mo 2 C@GNPs/Cu composites is higher than that of GNPs/Cu composites due to the improved interfacial bonding. This work sheds light on adding carbides to control the properties of GNPs/Cu composites.

Efficient hydrogen evolution enabled by in-situ synthesis of biphasic Mo2C/Mo16N7 nitrogen-doped carbon nanorods as catalysts

Jiabo Wang,Peng Zhang,Yalin Fu,Jie Zhang,Zhentao Liu,Baolei Liu,Jibo Zhang,Li Chen

Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) has gained significant recognition as a cutting-edge, non-precious transition metal catalysts for efficiently driving the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the desorption of Mo-H bonds on the pristine Mo 2 C surface are difficult, resulting in a slow Heyrovsky/Tafel step. Herein, biphasic Mo 2 C/Mo 16 N 7 nitrogen doped carbon nanorods (Mo 2 C/Mo 16 N 7 @NRs) is synthesized as the high-performance HER electrocatalyst by using a one-step in-situ pyrolysis growth method. It is found that a suitable pyrolysis temperature can simultaneously tune the morphology of the catalyst and form abundant heterointerface. Benefit from abundant porous nanostructure and more electron-rich Mo active sites at the Mo 2 C-Mo 16 N 7 interfaces, the optimized Mo 2 C/Mo 16 N 7 @NRs demonstrates exceptional catalytic activity. It achieves low overpotentials ( η 10 ) of 63.62 and 117.43 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , accompanied by Tafel scopes of 49.73 and 64.44 mV dec −1 in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Also, Mo 2 C/Mo 16 N 7 @NRs shows long-lasting stability for 24 h in the different electrolytes. The experimental and theoretical findings explain the synergistic effects of unique morphology control and interface engineering on electrocatalyst activity. The one-step in-situ pyrolysis growth method is expected to produce non-precious metal catalysts with distinct morphology and heterointerfaces.

Molybdenum-functionalized carbon nanofibers catalyst for enhancing dry reforming of methane performance

Yanbin Zhang,Shuowen Guo,Xiaolong Wang,Ying Li,Tong Xu,Yinghui Sun,Jie Bai

Non-noble metal-based catalysts used for dry reforming of methane (DRM) undergo extensive deactivation, mainly because of the carbon deposition. Herein, the conventional NiCo-CNFs catalyst was modified by minor Mo promoter for facilitating CO and H 2 produced from DRM. This not only improves the catalytic stability of the catalyst, with CH 4 conversion up to 97.7 % after 720 min at 850 ℃, but also reduces the generation of carbon deposition. The addition of an appropriate amount of Mo enhanced the metal-support interaction, and formed Mo 2 C in the reaction. The generation of Mo 2 C also provided more active sites for DRM reaction, which is also benefited to NiCoMo 0.1 -CNFs catalyst exhibited optimal activity and stability. The reaction pathway of NiCoMo 0.1 -CNFs catalyst in DRM reaction was elucidated through in-situ DRIFTS, and the activation mechanism of the catalyst for CH 4 and CO 2 was revealed. This study revealed the key role of Mo 2 C, providing a feasible solution for inhibiting carbon deposition and improving the catalytic stability of DRM reactions.

Solvent-free microwave synthesis of ultra-small Ru-Mo2C@CNT with strong metal-support interaction for industrial hydrogen evolution

Wu Xueke,Wang Zuochao,Zhang Dan,Qin Yingnan,Wang Minghui,Han Yi,Zhan Tianrong,Yang Bo,Li Shaoxiang,Lai Jianping,Wang Lei

Exploring a simple, fast, solvent-free synthetic method for large-scale preparation of cheap, highly active electrocatalysts for industrial hydrogen evolution reaction is one of the most promising work today. In this work, a simple, fast and solvent-free microwave pyrolysis method is used to synthesize ultra-small (3.5 nm) Ru-Mo 2 C@CNT catalyst with heterogeneous structure and strong metal-support interaction in one step. The Ru-Mo 2 C@CNT catalyst only exhibits an overpotential of 15 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and exhibits a large turnover frequency value up to 21.9 s −1 under an overpotential of 100 mV in 1.0 M KOH. In addition, this catalyst can reach high current densities of 500 mA cm −2 and 1000 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 56 mV and 78 mV respectively, and it displays high stability of 1000 h. This work provides a feasible way for the reasonable design of other large-scale production catalysts.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes confined Mo2C nanoparticles as counter electrodes for boosting triiodide reduction reaction in dye-sensitized solar cells

Hui Zhao,Feifei Nie,Yuanhao Li,Shuhui Liu,Bei Ruan,Mingxing Wu,Kezhong Wu

Multicomponent synergistic regulation has been an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical properties of Mo 2 C-based counter electrode (CE) catalysts in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Herein, Mo 2 C/CNTs composites (termed MCNT x , x  = 2, 4, 6, 8, means the phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 ) concentration) have been prepared using well-crystallized Mo 2 C nanograins anchored on the wall of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by a facial two-step approach. Through simple ultrasound assistance, PMo 12 was spontaneously connected with CNTs, and the obtained precursors can be converted to the target product MCNT x by a simple thermal decomposition at N 2 atmosphere. The modified CNTs guarantees the fast transfer of electrons and serves as framework for the support of Mo 2 C nanoparticles and mass diffusion, moreover the well-defined Mo 2 C nanoparticles ensures more accessible active sites to promote the triiodide reduction reaction (IRR). As a result of the synergistic effect between modified CNTs and Mo 2 C nanoparticles, MCNT x show excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) when fabricated as CEs of DSSCs. The MCNT6-based DSSC exhibits a superior PCE up to 8.06 %, which is significantly higher than DSSC assembled with Pt CE (7.19 %).

Constructing MoO2/Mo2C heterointerfaces on N-doped carbon microspheres for synergistic adsorption-catalysis of polysulfides in Lithium-Sulfur batteries

Lin Sun,Tianqi Wang,Jie Xie,Yunjing Qiao,Xuetao Lu,Menghan Liu,Cheng Liu,Zhong Jin

The practical implementation of lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries is severely hindered by the polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics. Herein, we designed and fabricated a heterostructured MoO 2 /Mo 2 C composite anchored on N-doped carbon microspheres (MoO 2 /Mo 2 C@NC) as a multifunctional separator coating. The built-in electric field formed at the MoO 2 /Mo 2 C interface drives electron redistribution, which not only strengthens the chemical anchoring of polysulfides on the polar MoO 2 surfaces but also accelerates their catalytic conversion on the conductive Mo 2 C domains. This synergistic adsorption-catalysis mechanism effectively suppressed shuttle behavior and enhanced liquid-to-solid transformation kinetics. As a result, Li S batteries equipped with the MoO 2 /Mo 2 C@NC-modified separator exhibited remarkable rate capability (670 mAh g −1 at 2C) and long-term cycling stability (approximately 515 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles). This work elucidates the critical role of interfacial electronic modulation in polysulfide regulation and provides a rational heterostructure design strategy for high-energy-density Li S batteries.

Fabrication of Mo2C-Loaded Macadamia Nut Shell-Derived Porous Carbon Composites and Their Hydrogen Evolution and Microwave Absorption Performance

Kexin Wang,Haipeng Cui,Shujuan Shi,Jingru Chen,Yanchun Tong,Haizhou Wang

In this study, Mo2C-loaded macadamia nut shell-derived porous carbon composites (denoted MC) were fabricated via a scalable method to explore their dual functionality for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and microwave absorption. Macadamia nut shells, which are a sustainable biomass source, were carbonized and activated to create a porous carbon matrix, which was then impregnated with ammonium molybdate for Mo2C formation through carbothermal reduction. The impact of carbonization temperature on the structural and electrochemical properties of the composites was systematically studied. Among the various composites synthesized, MC850 exhibited the most favorable balance of conductivity, pore structure, and Mo2C dispersion, leading to optimal HER performance and microwave absorption properties. Specifically, MC850 demonstrated a low overpotential of 87.2 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm–2, superior electrochemical stability, and outstanding microwave absorption performance with a reflection loss (RL) of −40.6 dB at optimal thickness, achieving nearly complete absorption of incident electromagnetic waves and a broad effective absorption bandwidth. These results underscore the synergistic effects of the carbon structure and Mo2C integration, providing a pathway for the development of efficient electrocatalysts and lightweight electromagnetic absorbers from biomass-derived materials.
