A 2D FeCo LDH/TiN/NC van der Waals Heterojunction: Electron Redistribution Enhances Trifunctional Electrocatalysis

Yu He,Mengyao Zhao,Xiang Li,Weiliang Xiong,Guosheng Shao,Peng Zhang,Yige Zhao

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (2D vdWHs) have garnered significant interest owing to their ability of efficiently interfacial electron transfer, tunable band structures, and high structural stability. Nevertheless, the utilization of 2D vdWHs as multifunctional electrocatalysts is still rarely explored. In this work, we synthesized a 30% FeCo LDH/TiN/NC electrocatalyst via high-temperature solid-state and hydrothermal methods, featuring a 2D vdWH architecture in which FeCo LDH nanosheets are uniformly anchored onto the TiN/NC substrate. The resulting electrocatalyst exhibits remarkable trifunctional activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), comparable to those of commercial catalysts. The superior electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the interfacial electron redistribution, in which the electron transfer from TiN/NC to FeCo LDH enhances charge transfer kinetics and increases the number of active sites during electrochemical reactions. Moreover, the 30% FeCo LDH/TiN/NC electrocatalyst shows great promise for applications in both zinc-air batteries (ZABs) and overall water splitting. This study underscores the potential of 2D vdWHs and offers valuable insights for the design of advanced multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Photo-reduced Synthesis of Ag Fe/NC Nanoparticles and their Visible-Light-Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performances

Xiangyu Meng,Zhihuan Wang,Guoliang Yu,Xinbin Wang,Yingjie Chen,Liyan Yu,Lifeng Dong

Rational design of surface plasmon-enhanced electrocatalysts can effectively integrate solar energy into fuel cells. Herein, iron and nitrogen codoped carbon (Fe/NC) nanoparticles synthesized with microemulsion are used to absorb and photo-reduce Ag ions in solutions to form Ag nanoparticles on Fe/NC (Ag-Fe/NC). Different Ag-Fe/NC materials are prepared by adjusting the concentration of AgNO3 solution. Among them, Ag-Fe/NC obtained with 0.5 mg ml−1 AgNO3 solution shows the highest oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance and light-enhanced ORR characteristics, even better than commercial Pt/C. Besides, Ag-Fe/NC displays excellent long-term stability and high methanol resistance for ORR performances in alkaline medium. Therefore, this study will provide a new method for integrating light to recover Ag ions in solutions and improve electrocatalytic properties.

Nano-pyramid-type Co-ZnO/NC for hydrogen transfer cascade reaction between alcohols and nitrobenzene

Chen Wu,Changyan Zhu,Kangkai Liu,Shaowei Yang,Yu Sun,Kai Zhu,Yueling Cao,Sai Zhang,Sifei Zhuo,Min Zhang,Qiuyu Zhang,Hepeng Zhang

The catalytic hydrogen transfer (CHT) cascade reaction between alcohols and nitro- compounds meets green chemistry yet involves high catalyst requirements. Herein, a hierarchical nano-pyramid structure, in which cobalt single atoms (Co SAs) are deposited on highly dispersed ZnO nanoparticles supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (denoted as Co-ZnO/NC), was designed and obtained through pyrolysis of ZnCo-ZIF. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward the CHT cascade reaction, achieving a high nitrobenzene conversion (94 %), imine selectivity (97 %), and turnover frequency (8.8 h −1 ). This nano-pyramid is a state-of-the-art non-noble-metal catalyst and is comparable to noble-metal catalysts. Experimental and DFT results revealed that the Co SAs supported on ZnO reduced the reaction energy barrier of hydroxyl dehydrogenation, the first and rate-determining step in this heterogeneous catalysis. Furthermore, Co-ZnO/NC exhibits good recyclability and universality. Our findings offer a new catalyst for Schiff base synthesis and aid understanding of the roles of Zn in ZIF-derived carbon catalysts.

Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oil over NiMn/NC catalyst for bio-based liquid fuel

Xiaomeng Yang,Jianping Li,Yuandong Xu,Dan Wu,He Liu,Yongsheng Zhang,Chunbao Xu

Bio-oil derived from the lignin with natural aromatic structures requires deoxygenation to serve as a petroleum fuel substitute. However, the traditional bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process encounters challenges such as the use of high-pressure H 2 , and precious metal catalysts. In this work, we investigated the effect of NiMn/NC catalyst on the in-situ HDO performance of guaiacol, a commonly used lignin oil model compound. The results indicate that 95.44% conversion of guaiacol and 81.89% deoxygenation products selectivity (cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) can be achieved at 150°C with a water/isopropanol system. During the HDO of real lignin oil, the upgraded oil product achieved a yield of 14.32 wt%, with a high H/C ratio (1.71%). Analysis of the mechanism suggests that the in-situ HDO reaction of substrate is synergistically promoted by the high surface area and weak acidic sites of the carbon support and nickel-oxygen vacancy interface. This work presents an advanced strategy for the in-situ HDO of bio-oil into bio-based liquid fuel by nickel-based catalysts.

DNTF/Al/NC Energetic Nanocomposite Fibers Fabricated by Electrospinning: Synergistically Enhanced Energy Release and Safety

Jing Li,Qian Li,Jia Dang,Hai Nan,Yuanyuan Li,Bo Liu,Yinghui Ren,Haixia Ma

Uniform DNTF/Al/NC energetic composite fibers with evenly dispersed components were prepared by electrospinning. • The interconnected fibrous framework accelerates the heat and mass transfer. • Electrospun fibers exhibit better combustion performance and safety performance. Although 3,4-dinitrofurazanfuroxan (DNTF) is a prominent high-energy explosive, its high mechanical sensitivity compromises its safety and limits the wide scale application in advanced solid propellants. To address this issue, DNTF/Al/Nitrocellulose (NC) energetic nanocomposite fibers with different NC contents were fabricated by electrospinning technology. The microstructure, morphological characteristics, and chemical composition were fully characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS. SEM results confirm that the sample containing 40 wt % NC achieves uniform component dispersion and effectively reduces particle agglomeration, presenting the optimal morphological structure. The thermal decomposition behavior, combustion performance and mechanical sensitivity of the DNTF/Al/NC energetic nanocomposite fibers were systematically investigated in comparison with physically mixed composites. Benefiting from the continuous fibrous network structure, the DNTF/Al/NC energetic nanocomposite fibers exhibited accelerated heat and mass transfer kinetics, as evidenced by sharper exothermic peaks and intensified heat release behavior during thermal decomposition. Combustion tests demonstrate that the optimized composite delivers a shortened ignition delay time from 37.45 s to 31.80 s, and an elevated combustion temperature from 230.7 °C to 268.2 °C, realizing remarkably enhanced energy release efficiency. Moreover, the critical friction load increases from 216 N to 252 N and the impact sensitivity drop height increases from 35 cm to 45 cm, which verifies the significant reduction in mechanical sensitivity and prominent improvement in operational safety. In summary, the electrospun DNTF/Al/NC energetic nanocomposite fibers combine high energy release capacity with excellent safety performance. This facile structural modulation strategy offers a new approach to the rational design and controllable preparation of high performance energetic composite materials with balanced energy and safety. Efficient epimerization of highly concentrated glucose to mannose over electronic structure-modulated Mo/NC catalyst

Xianglong Zhang,Xiao Fengb,Wei Zhou,Huai Liu,Wenlong Jia,Dan Li,Rui Zhang,Lincai Peng

The catalytic conversion of concentrated glucose to mannose is of considerable interest due to the latter's therapeutic value, yet it is constrained by low catalytic efficiency. Herein, a Mo/NC-300 catalyst was constructed by introducing active Mo species into a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) matrix via pyrolysis. The resulting catalyst demonstrated outstanding activity in the epimerization of high-concentration glucose (50 wt%) to mannose, achieving a high yield of 33.4 % and selectivity of 94.6 %, alongside an excellent productivity of 123.7 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 . Catalyst characterizations and density functional theory calculations revealed that the NC layer modulates the electronic structure of Mo species, shifting the d-band center upwards. This preferentially enhances glucose adsorption and lowers the epimerization energy barrier. Isotope labeling experiments further confirmed the reaction follows an intramolecular 1,2‑carbon shift mechanism. The catalyst also exhibited excellent stability and reusability, primarily attributed to the hydrophobicity imparted by the NC layer. This work not only provides a catalytic system that simultaneously overcomes the challenges of concentration, stability, and efficiency, but also offers insights into the role of electronic metal-support interaction in glucose epimerization.

Highly active M2P2O7@NC (M = Co and Zn) for bifunctional electrocatalysts for ORR and HER

Lian-Hua Xu,Hai-Bo Zeng,Xue-Ji Zhang,Serge Cosnier,Robert S. Marks,Dan Shan

Tuning the coordination environment between metal centers and organic ligands is a promising way to design of the precursors of electrocatalysts for water splitting or other renewable energy options. In this work, a novel coordinated polymer was prepared feasibly in polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) aqueous solution using aminotrimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP, L 1 ) and 2-methylimidazole (MeMI, L 2 ) as ligands with the ratio of 2:5, Co 2+ and Zn 2+ as metal centers. Based on the concept of acid-base neutralization reaction, the proton-transfer induced “deprotonation and protonation” for L 1 and L 2 , respectively. Thus, the coordination was dominated by the deprotonated L 1 . Owing to also partial of protonated L 2 adsorbed as “counter ions”, carbonization of the obtained precursor at 800 °C under N 2 atmosphere endows the pyrolysis product with nitrogen-doped carbon supported metal pyrophosphate (M 2 P 2 O 7 @NC). Thus, the resulting M 2 P 2 O 7 @NC exhibits the enhanced and durable ORR and HER performance. For ORR in 0.1 M KOH, an enhanced onset potential (0.925 V vs. RHE), half wave potential (0.793 V vs. RHE) and diffusion limiting current (6.132 mA cm −2 ) can be obtained comparable to those of Pt/C. For HER in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , it only needs an over potential of 180 mV to realize a current density of 10 mA cm −2 .

Metal-organic frameworks derived reverse-encapsulation Co-NC@Mo2C complex for efficient overall water splitting

Qirui Liang,Huihui Jin,Zhe Wang,Yuli Xiong,Shuai Yuan,Xianci Zeng,Daping He,Shichun Mu

Developing low-cost, highly active, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts is a challenging issue in electrochemical water electrolysis . Herein, we develop a simple metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based approach to prepare bifunctional Co-NC@ Mo 2 C complex catalysts. Differently from traditional carbon encapsulated functional nanomaterials , herein the carbon-based framework derived carbonitride and Co nanoparticles (Co-NC) are encapsulated with Mo 2 C. Benefiting from the unique reverse-encapsulation structure and synergetic effects of Mo 2 C and Co-NC, the Co-NC@Mo 2 C catalyst shows superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. In alkaline media , it affords the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 99 mV and 347 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Interestingly, due to a reversed encapsulation structure where Co nanoparticles are protected by Mo 2 C, it leads to an outstanding HER catalytic activity (a low overpotential of 143 mV) and stability in acidic solutions. Remarkably, when employed as both the cathode and anode for overall water splitting, a low cell voltage of 1.685 V is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media with excellent stability, making the Co-NC@Mo 2 C an efficient non noble metal bifunctional electrocatalyst toward water splitting.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of flower-like SnS2/NC@GO composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Rui Li,Chang Miao,Limin Yu,Haoyi Mou,Mengqiao Zhang,Wei Xiao

Flower-like SnS 2 /NC@GO composite powders are successfully synthesized by freeze-drying a mixed suspension of graphene oxide (GO) and melamine decorating flower-like SnS 2 powders with following annealing processes , which are confirmed by scanning electron microscope , X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Raman spectra and thermogravimetric analysis . These results demonstrate that a three dimensional network provided by GO wraps uniformly on the surface of flower-like SnS 2 powders coated with the N-doped carbon (NC) layer derived from melamine, in which the NC layer can effectively relieve the volume expansion and the conductive network can supply plentiful charge transfer channels for electrons and lithium ions . When served as an anode material , the coin cell with the SnS 2 /NC@GO composite electrode exhibits an outstanding cyclic property and delivers an average discharge specific capacity of 761.5, 569.7, 502.6, 415.1 and 290.3 mAh g −1 at 100, 200, 300, 500 and 1000 mA g −1 , respectively. The cell can deliver a high discharge specific capacity of 621.1 mAh g −1 when the current density recovers suddenly to 100 mA g −1 . Moreover, the cell with the SnS 2 /NC@GO composite electrode presents an enhanced lithium ions diffusion coefficient of 1.872 × 10 −14  cm 2  s −1 and a low charge transfer resistance of 129.1 Ω. It is no doubt that the as-prepared SnS 2 /NC@GO composite with improved electrochemical properties can be used as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Regulating electronic structure of hollow LaxCoyO4@NC by La incorporation for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction

Ziyu Zhao,Yawen Liu,Shenghui Wang,Zhehao Hu,Tingyi Huang,Meng Yu,Xin Chen,Cong Jiang,Qianwei Liang,Jianqiang Hu

Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts to substitute noble metals is crucial for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we successfully synthesized hollow porous La-doped Co 3 O 4 dodecahedral nanoparticles (La x Co y O 4 @NC) through using ZIF-67 as precursor. Wherein, La could regulate electronic structure of Co 3 O 4 and thus promotes the OER performance efficiently. La doped Co 3 O 4 displays enhanced OER activity than pure Co 3 O 4 , as confirmed by experience results and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Due to La doping, the ratio of Co 2+ and Co 3+ would increase obviously and generate new electronic states near the Fermi level. The La 0.17 Co 2.83 O 4 @NC exhibites excellent OER performance and high durability, which only requires an overpotential of 363 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline medium and markedly outperforms Co 3 O 4 @NC (414 mV). These findings might provide a new strategy for controllable synthesis of transition metal nanocatalysts for high-performance OER electrocatalysis.

Efficient hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oil to hydrocarbon fuels over bifunctional RuCoWx/NC catalysts

Mingxing Zhao,Jun Hu,Ping Lu,Shiliang Wu,Chao Liu,Yahui Sun

Efficient hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oils to cycloalkanes was achieved over bifunctional RuCoW x /NC catalyst prepared by in situ pyrolysis method. The performance of RuCoW x /NC was investigated in HDO of 4-propylguaiacol, considering the influences of catalysts, initial H 2 pressure, and reaction temperature. Catalyst screening reveals that RuCoW 0.03 /NC afforded the highest propylcyclohexane yield of 71.3% from 4-propylguaiacol at 220 ℃. At 240 ℃, the yield of propylcyclohexane increased to 95.2 %. The heavy fraction of rice husk bio-oil, primarily composed of lignin-derived phenolic compounds, could be upgraded to 98.3% hydrocarbons at 280 ℃ over RuCoW 0.03 /NC. The synergistic interaction between highly dispersed Co and Ru metal sites and WO x acidic sites is responsible for the excellent HDO activity of RuCoW 0.03 /NC. Besides, RuCoW 0.03 /NC exhibited high stability after four cycles.

MOF-Derived Oxygen Vacancy-Rich Co/CoO@NC-CNTs Hybrid Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Xinjie Guo,Xingyu Gan,Yun Wang,Xiaoxia Lv,Fengxiang Wang,Shuxin Wang,Shan Peng

Graphical A Co/CoO@NC/CNT-10 catalyst was effectively synthesized using melamine-assisted pyrolysis with Co-MOF as the precursor. With the synergistic effect of metal species, oxygen defects and N-doped carbon nanotubes, the intrinsic activity and electron transfer ability of the catalysts were greatly improved, showing excellent electrocatalytic oxygen reduction performance. Low-cost and high-efficiency oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts are the basis for large-scale applications of electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, cobalt and oxygen vacancy-rich cobalt oxide encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon and carbon nanotubes (Co/CoO@NC-CNTs) have been prepared by direct solid-state pyrolysis of Co-MOF. The carbon morphology, oxygen vacancy content and type of nitrogen can be finely tuned by mixing Co-MOF with proper amounts of melamine. The optimized material has an interwoven CNT structure with abundant micro- and mesopores, suitable nitrogen type and certain number of oxygen vacancies and exhibiting outstanding ORR electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media with an onset potential of 0.96 V and a half-wave potential of 0.88 V vs RHE, which is higher than 20 wt% Pt/C, as well as being highly stable and well resistant to methanol.
