High-Entropy NiCoZnVCrOx Oxides Serve as Oxygen Carriers for NO Reduction

Weiwei Cai,Min Zheng

Flue gas denitrification represents an environmentally friendly and economically viable strategy for alleviating energy crises and advancing carbon neutrality goals. Although traditional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts demonstrate excellent denitrification efficiency and catalytic stability, they still face significant challenges, including high cost and ammonia slip. In this study, the high-entropy oxide (HEO) NiCoZnVCrOxwas synthesized via the sol–gel method and evaluated for the reduction of NO to N2. The effects of varying reaction conditions on the NO reduction performance of this material were systematically investigated alongside the underlying reaction mechanism. The results reveal that the reduced oxygen carrier (OC) achieves optimal performance at an oxidation temperature of 800 °C, oxidizing gas flow rate of 200 mL/min and reduction time of 60 min, yielding the highest NO conversion and N2selectivity while simultaneously minimizing NO2selectivity. The reaction mechanism was further elucidated through a series of characterization techniques, including DRIFTS. Overall, this HEO demonstrates significant potential as a candidate OC for flue gas denitrification.

NIR-Propelled Biomimetic Nanomotors for Photothermal/Chemodynamic/NO Synergistic Tumor Therapy

Ming Yang,Jian Hu,Zerui Li,Hanhan Xie,Hongri Gu,Chengzhi Hu

Multimodal nanotherapeutic systems capable of integrating photothermal, catalytic, and gas-mediated strategies offer powerful opportunities to overcome the limitations ofsingle-mode cancer therapies. Here, we develop a near-infrared (NIR) light-activatedbiomimetic nanomotor for targeted NO delivery and synergistic cancer therapy. Thenanomotor is constructed from bowl-shaped mesoporous polydopamine (PDA)nanoparticles loaded with Fe(II) as a Fenton catalyst and BNN6 as a thermallyresponsive NO donor (Denoted as PFB). To endow tumor specificity, the nanomotor isfurther camouflaged with MCF-7 cancer cell membrane (PFB@CM), enablinghomologous recognition and enhanced intratumoral accumulation. Upon NIRirradiation, PFB@CM exhibits strong photothermal conversion efficiency that initiatesthree synergistic processes: (i) self-thermophoretic propulsion that promotes cellularinternalization; (ii) heat-triggered decomposition of BNN6 for precise NO release; and(iii) heat-accelerated Fe(II) release from the PDA matrix. The liberated Fe(II) catalyzesendogenous H2O2 via a Fenton-like reaction to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS),which subsequently react with NO to yield highly cytotoxic reactive nitrogen species(RNS). This cascade amplifies oxidative and nitrosative stress within tumor cells, enabling photothermal, chemodynamic, and NO-mediated synergistic therapy. Thedesign of PFB@CM integrates homologous targeting, autonomous motility, and NIR-responsive multi-mechanism activation, demonstrating a versatile strategy for precisionnanomedicine and highlighting the potential of light-activated nanomotors for safe andeffective multimodal cancer therapy.

A no-crosstalk multi-functional tactile sensor for precise physiological monitoring

Haifeng Ji,Peihuan Lv,Liming Zhang,Lanyue Shen,Zhenqiu Gao,Zhen Wen,Xuhui Sun

Tactile sensors with multifunctional sensing characteristics enhance people’s perception of external stimuli and have become an indispensable part of human–computer interaction. However, constructing a multi-functional tactile sensor that is able to respond to multiple stimuli without signal crosstalk still remains challenging. Here, we proposed a temperature–pressure integrated multi-functional tactile sensor (TP-MTS) by coupling thermoresistive and contact-electrification effects, which can simultaneously detect human body temperature and physiological motion. A sensing electrode model was validated by using a PVDF/PEG/Gr (polyvinylidene difluoride/Polyethylene terephthalate/graphene) composite thermoresistive film instead of the traditional metal as the electrode of the pressure sensing unit. The multi-functional tactile sensor converts temperature and pressure stimuli into two independent output signals from different paths, realizing simultaneous detection of temperature and pressure without signal crosstalk. The TP-MTS can achieve real-time temperature monitoring with a minimum resolution of 0.1℃ and a sensitivity of 1.51 % ℃ -1 and it could also detect pressure in a wide pressure range (0.25 kPa ∼ 253.87 kPa) with the sensitivity of 3.73 kPa −1 . Through the structure design and the huge impedance difference between the thermosensitive film and the triboelectric unit, the real-time monitoring of temperature and pulse is realized simultaneously in a single device without crosstalk.

Three-dimensional ordered macroporous cerium–manganese composite oxide for NO oxidation

Canyang Qu,Ping Wang,Miao He,Cheng Yang,Jing Xiong,Xiaohua Sun,Yuechang Wei,Zhenxing Li

NOx is one of the main sources of air pollution, which primarily comes from automobile exhausts. Rare earth-based catalysts for NO oxidation have excellent oxygen storage and release performance and good structural stability. Herein, a series of three-dimensional ordered microporous (3DOM) cerium–manganese composite oxide catalysts with different cerium–manganese ratios for NO oxidation were prepared by the sol–gel method. The 3DOM structure improves the contact efficiency of the NO, soot and the catalyst. By incorporating Mn3+ ions into the cerium oxide lattice, a Ce–Mn solid solution forms with an ordered macroporous structure, and the interaction between cerium and manganese significantly increases the amount of reactive oxygen species. The catalyst with the optimal cerium–manganese ratio (1 : 2) was able to achieve a conversion rate of 62% at 250 °C, and the highest conversion rate reached 98%, which is far higher than pure cerium oxide and pure manganese oxide catalysts. This work provides a promising catalyst for NO oxidation and soot combustion applications.

Extraction, characterization, and NO release potential of keratin from human hair

Xingxing Jin,Yanfang Wang,Jiang Yuan,Jian Shen

Keratin-based biomaterials have emerged as potential candidates for various biomedical and biotechnological applications due to their intrinsic biocompatibility, biodegradability, mechanical durability, and natural abundance. The objective of our study is to explore the feasibility and potential applications of keratin for promoting nitric oxide (NO) release. Herein, keratin was first extracted from human hair and then modified with iodoacetic acid to afford S-carboxymethyl keratin. The amino acid residues, isoelectric point, and molecular weight of keratin were quantified with amino acid analyzer, zeta potential measurement, and SDS-PAGE method. Interestingly, human hair keratin was proved to be capable of promoting NO release from endogenous donor of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) in the presence of glutathione.

Near-infrared light-triggered NO release for spinal cord injury repair

Yaqin Jiang,Pengfei Fu,Yanyan Liu,Chaochao Wang,Peiran Zhao,Xu Chu,Xingwu Jiang,Wei Yang,Yelin Wu,Ya Wang,Guohua Xu,Jin Hu,Wenbo Bu

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by external physical impacts and can induce complex cascade events, sometimes converging to paralysis. Existing clinical drugs to traumatic SCI have limited therapeutic efficacy because of either the poor blood–spinal cord barrier (BSCB) permeability or a single function. Here, we suggest a “pleiotropic messenger” strategy based on near-infrared (NIR)–triggered on-demand NO release at the lesion area for traumatic SCI recovery via the concurrent neuroregeneration and neuroprotection processing. This NO delivery system was constructed as upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) core coated by zeolitic imidazolate framework–8 (ZIF-8) with NO donor (CysNO). This combined strategy substantial promotes the repair of SCI in vertebrates, ascribable to the pleiotropic effects of NO including the suppression of gliosis and inflammation, the promotion of neuroregeneration, and the protection of neurons from apoptosis, which opens intriguing perspectives not only in nerve repair but also in neurological research and tissue engineering.

Ce1−xFexVO4 with Improved Activity for Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Li Wang,Junbo Wang,Heping Cheng,Xiangxiang Zhou,Zhen Ma

A series of Ce1−xFexVO4(x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1) catalysts prepared by modified hydrothermal synthesis were used for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOxwith NH3. Among them, Ce0.5Fe0.5VO4showed the highest catalytic activity. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction using H2(H2-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3(NH3-TPD). The results indicated the formation of Ce-Fe-V-O solid solutions. The average oxidation states (AOS) of Ce, Fe, V, and O atoms changed obviously with the incorporation of Fe3+into CeVO4, and the acidity of Ce0.5Fe0.5VO4differs from that of CeVO4and FeVO4. The presence of more acid sites and a sharp increase in active oxygen species in Ce0.5Fe0.5VO4effectively improved the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity. Keywords:selective catalytic reduction;nitrogen oxides;cerium vanadate;iron vanadate;cerium-iron vanadate

Vericiguat improves CKD-related vascular calcification through the NO/cGMP/PKG pathway

Chengsi Li,Jing Li,Chengyingjie Yang,Zhenghao Zhu,Yachen Zhang,Yin Xiang

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition characterized by progressive loss of kidney function. Vascular calcification is not only a common late-stage complication of CKD but also serves as an independent predictor of cardiovascular events and mortality in CKD patients. This study investigates the mechanism by which vericiguat (VER), a soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) sensitizer, attenuates CKD-associated vascular calcification. The hypothesis that vericiguat alleviates the decrease of sGC activity mediated by calcium and phosphorus metabolism was verified in both in vitro and in vivo experimental models. The calcium levels were increased in the aorta of CKD rats and VSMCs in vitro, and the expression of osteogenic differentiation-related markers, eNOS and PKG was upregulated. Nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels were downregulated, while VER significantly improved calcification by activating the NO/cGMP/PKG pathway. Meanwhile, L-NAME antagonized the positive effects of VER in either CKD rats or calcified VSMCs.

Gas-Phase Photoelectrocatalytic Oxidation of NO via TiO2 Nanorod Array/FTO Photoanodes

Wenrui Dai,Ying Tao,Hangjun Zou,Shuning Xiao,Guisheng Li,Dieqing Zhang,Hexing Li

Most photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reactions are performed in the liquid phase for convenient electron transfer in an electrolyte solution. Herein, a novel PEC reactor involving a tandem combination of TiO2 nanorod array/fluorine-doped tin oxide (TiO2-NR/FTO) working electrodes and an electrochemical auxiliary cell was constructed to drive the highly efficient PEC oxidation of indoor gas (NOx). With the aid of a low bias voltage (0.3 V), the as-formed PEC reactor exhibited an 80% removal rate for oxidizing NO (500 ppb) under light irradiation, which is much higher than that of the traditional photocatalytic (PC) process. Upon being irradiated by light, the photogenerated electrons are quickly separated from the holes and transferred to the counter electrode (Pt) owing to the applied bias voltage, leaving photogenerated holes in the TiO2-NR/FTO electrode for oxidizing NO molecules. Moreover, both dry and humid NO could be effectively removed by the tandem TiO2-NR/FTO-based gas-phase PEC reactor, indicating that the NO molecules could also be directly oxidized by photogenerated holes in addition to hydroxyl radicals. The presence of trace amounts of water could promote the PEC oxidation of NO owing to the formation of hydroxyl radicals induced by reactions between the water and holes, which could further oxidize NO. This PEC reactor offers an energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and efficient route to treat air polluted with low concentrations of gases (NOx and SOx).

Photo-triggered NO combined with photobiomodulation promotes endothelial repair after balloon angioplasty

Shu-jie Jin,Chen-ze Deng,Rou-ye Wang,Fan Jia,Pei-hong Ji,Ya Peng,Ke-feng Ren,Jian-min Liu,You-xiang Wang,Jian Ji

Balloon angioplasty, though effective for vascular stenosis, inevitably induces endothelial injury during dilation and clinical strategies to actively promote intimal repair remain lacking. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has demonstrated promising effects in tissue repair through its potent biological regulatory functions. Meanwhile, light is also a particularly appealing tool for drug delivery due to its strong spatiotemporal controllability. In this study, we developed a red light-triggered nitric oxide (NO) releasing coating based on the photosensitive NO donor S-Nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP). The coating enabled on-demand NO release under red light irradiation, modulating cellular signaling pathways to guide functional endothelial repair. After releasing NO, the SNAP coating significantly promoted endothelial cell (EC) migration and proliferation, while suppressing smooth muscle cell (SMC) activity, resulting in an increase in the EC/SMC ratio by 0.48 in co-culture. In vivo experiments, the combined effect of PBM and light-controlled drug release alleviated vascular inflammation and reduced restenosis (intimal hyperplasia decreased by 63 μm), demonstrating superior therapeutic efficacy compared to PBM alone.

Iridescent Daytime Radiative Cooling with No Absorption Peaks in the Visible Range

Zhenmin Ding,Lorenzo Pattelli,Hongbo Xu,Wenhai Sun,Xin Li,Lei Pan,Jiupeng Zhao,Chengyu Wang,Xiang Zhang,Ying Song,Jun Qiu,Yao Li,Ronggui Yang

Coatings for passive radiative cooling applications must be highly reflected in the solar spectrum, and thus can hardly support any coloration without losing their functionality. In this work, a colorful daytime radiative cooling surface based on structural coloration is reported. A designed radiative cooler with a bioinspired array of truncated SiO 2 microcones is manufactured via a self-assembly method and reactive ion etching. Complemented with a silver reflector, the radiative cooler exhibits broadband iridescent coloration due to the scattering induced by the truncated microcone array while maintaining an average reflectance of 95% in the solar spectrum and a high thermal emissivity (ε) of 0.95, owing to the reduced impedance mismatch provided by the patterned surface at infrared wavelengths, reaching an estimated cooling power of ≈143 W m –2 at an ambient temperature of 25 °C and a measured average temperature drop of 7.1 °C under direct sunlight. This strong cooling performance is attributed to its bioinspired surface pattern, which promotes both the aesthetics and cooling capacity of the daytime radiative cooler.

NO-dependent vasodilation and deep tumor penetration for cascade-amplified antitumor performance

Qing Xu,Gui Chen,Guimei Chen,Hualan Wu,Yuanyuan Yang,Ziyi Mai,Rui Sun,Ping Luan,Chaowan Guo,Meng Yu,Zhenwei Peng,Zhiqiang Yu

Nonspecific biodistribution and poor permeability of conventional therapeutic agents in solid tumors severely compromised the antitumor efficacy. Herein, we report a cascade tumor therapeutic nanoplatform consisting of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and nicorandil (NI), namely DNP, to specifically produce cytotoxic agents in tumor cells as well as dilating blood vessels to increase the intratumoral oxidative stress levels. The DHA embedded in the membrane could generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) meanwhile NI produced nitric oxide (NO) in response to intracellular glutathione (GSH) in tumors. Notably, the two functional species could further react in situ to form a more tumoricidal reactive nitrogen species (RNS), causing selectively cascade amplification of antitumor performance. In addition, NO-induced vasodilation could consequently result in a series of functions, including hypoxia relief and deep tumor transportation. In general, we anticipate that the DNP could show great potential for tumor-specific treatment by selectively producing RNS precursors in response to the interior environment of tumor cells for hypoxia normalization and tumor inhibition.
