Hydrothermal aging tests are important to carry out when evaluating the hydrothermal durability of heterogeneous catalysts in vehicle exhaust emission. Here, we explored the effect of aging on an efficient Mn-based mullite catalyst (SmMn2O5) of NO oxidation. The mullite catalyst was prepared via the hydrothermal method and was subsequently aged in air with a 10% H2O stream at 750 °C for 16 hours. The fresh and aged catalysts were structurally characterized using Powder X-ray diffraction(XRD), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), high resolution-transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). For the performance evaluations, the samples were placed into a U-shape reactor furnace, and NO and NO2 concentrations were in situ recorded with an NOx analyzer. In contrast to fresh mullite, the aged sample showed a 25 °C higher light-off temperature and 11% conversion loss at its maximum conversion temperature of 300 °C. O2-TPD of the aged sample displayed a large decrease of the desorption area, consistent with an ∼3-fold loss of the BET specific surface area. Moreover, HRTEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy results together indicated that a small portion of the mullite decomposed into perovskite SmMnO3 and Mn2O3, which further reduced the total quantity of Mn active sites. The reduction of the BET surface area and mullite decomposition together caused the decrease of the catalytic performance. We therefore expect maintaining the specific surface area to be important for preventing the loss of catalytic performance during the hydrothermal aging process.

Effective intervention during the early phases of alkali burns is crucial for preventing progressive ocular damage and persistent inflammation, necessitating multifunctional solutions beyond single-component therapies. In this study, we developed a thermosensitive hydrogel based on L-arginine-modified hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBC_Arg). The hydrogel remains liquid at room temperature for easy application and undergoes thermosensitive gelation upon reaching the ocular surface temperature, ensuring prolonged retention and enhanced drug efficacy. The L-arginine modification enables the hydrogel to release nitric oxide (NO), which plays a critical role in modulating immune responses and controlling excessive inflammation. Additionally, EPL@MnO2 nanosheets were encapsulated within the hydrogel for extended-release and enhanced scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reducing oxidative stress and mitigating alkali burn-induced damage. In a rat ocular alkali burn model, the composite HBC_Arg/MnO2 hydrogel significantly suppressed inflammation, promoted re-epithelialization, enhanced stromal healing, and prevented corneal vascularization and opacity. This multifunctional hydrogel offers a promising advanced therapeutic strategy for treating acute ocular alkali burns, providing potential improvements in visual outcomes and overall quality of life.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial gaseous medium for tumor growth and progression, but it may also cause mitochondrial disorder and DNA damage by drastically increasing its concentration in tumor. Due to its challenging administration and unpredictable release, NO based gas therapy is difficult to eliminate malignant tumor at low safe doses. To address these issues, herein, we develop a multifunctional nanocatalyst called Cu-doped polypyrrole (CuP) as an intelligent nanoplatform ( [email protected] ) to deliver the NO precursor BNN6 and specifically release NO in tumors. Under the aberrant metabolic environment of tumors, [email protected] catalyzes the conversion of antioxidant GSH into GSSG and excess H 2 O 2 into ·OH through Cu + /Cu 2+ cycle, which results in oxidative damage to tumor cells and the concomitant release of cargo BNN6. More importantly, after laser exposure, nanocatalyst CuP can absorb and convert photons into hyperthermia, which in turn, accelerates the aforesaid catalytic efficiency and pyrolyzes BNN6 into NO. Under the synergistic effect of hyperthermia, oxidative damage, and NO burst, almost complete tumor elimination is achieved in vivo with negligible toxicity to body. Such an ingenious combination of NO prodrug and nanocatalytic medicine provides a new insight into the development of NO based therapeutic strategies. Statement of significance A hyperthermia-responsive NO delivery nanoplatform ( [email protected] ) based on Cu-doped polypyrrole was designed and fabricated, in which CuP catalyzed the conversion of H 2 O 2 and GSH into ·OH and GSSG to induce intratumoral oxidative damage. After laser irradiation, hyperthermia ablation and responsive release of NO further coupled with oxidative damage to eliminate malignant tumors. This versatile nanoplatform provides new insights into the combined application of catalytic medicine and gas therapy.

Low-temperature (low-T) oxidation experiments of n -heptane –with and without NO addition– were experimentally and numerically investigated at stoichiometric conditions in a jet-stirred reactor. Experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure over a temperature range of 500–800 K. Reactants, intermediates, and products, were measured using synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry . A detailed kinetic model was developed to gain insight into the chemical effect of NO on low-T oxidation chemistry of n -heptane. Taking 650 K as the transition temperature, the results revealed that NO addition exhibited an inhibiting effect on fuel reactivity below 650 K and a promoting effect above 650 K. The reactions of ROO + NO = RO + NO 2 and HO 2 + NO = OH + NO 2 at different temperature regions were responsible for the inhibition and promotion effects, respectively. Evidence gathered from both experimental measurements and kinetic model predictions indicated that NO addition had a significant inhibitory effect on the formation of cool flame species during the low-T oxidation process. NO suppressed low-T oxidation via the reaction of ROO + NO = RO + NO 2 , which impeded the subsequent isomerization, O 2 addition, OH-, and HO 2 -elimination reaction, and influenced product distribution of the cool flame species. The experimental observations provided detailed information about these reactive intermediates, which offered new insights into low-T oxidation phenomena and clarified the importance of NO reactions which prevent the formation of cool flame products during low-T oxidation.

Mesoporous In/Hβ-X series catalysts were prepared by desilication method with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and indium incorporation for selective catalytic reduction of NO with methane (CH 4 -SCR). The post desilication treatment conditions for preparing In/Hβ-X were optimized. Etching time is the most important desilication parameter influencing the resulting CH 4 -SCR performance of the catalyst. The In/Hβ-3 sample which was etched for 3 h presents the highest NO x conversion, 22% higher than In/H-Beta counterparts using commercial microporous beta. Obvious analysis reveals that besides generating mesopores, controlled desilication can modulate the proportion of InO + active sites and surface oxygen species, allowing more active sites to be exposed.

To reduce the emission of NO from fossil fuel combustion and the energy consumption associated with NH3 production, the development of simple and efficient methods to transform NO into high-value-added NH3 is essential. Here, we report the efficient catalytic hydrogenation of NO to NH3 under mild reaction conditions by the synergistic catalysis of functionalized ionic liquids (FILs) and Pd catalysts. In this system, an FIL [TEPA][Im] acted as both an absorbent and a catalyst. The presence of [TEPA][Im] enhanced the catalytic performance by changing the coordination and electronic environment of Pd on the Pd/C catalyst. First, NO was absorbed by [TEPA][Im]; then, the hydrogenation of absorbed NO to NH3 was performed at a low temperature via the synergistic catalyzation of [TEPA][Im] and Pd/C. The effects of various factors on NO hydrogenation to NH3 were also investigated. Remarkably, Pd/C exhibited outstanding properties in the formation of NH3 with a high yield of 67% in the FIL [TEPA][Im] under the conditions of 100 °C and an H2 pressure of 0.5 MPa. [TEPA][Im] could be reused multiple times and the product NH3 could be recovered by flashing.

Manganese-antimony composite oxide catalysts were prepared for use in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of flue gas, by adopting the strategy of passivation to regulate the valence state of the active component and control catalytic activity. Activity evaluation results found that MnSb 0.36 O y delivered 80 % NO conversion in the presence of SO 2 at 200 °C, and nearly 90 % conversion at 250 °C. Doping with Sb changed the surface micromorphology, resulting in a perforated porousness layered foam with a porous structure of tens of nanometers, which was conducive to molecular mass transfer of the reaction gas. Doping with Sb regulated the valence state of the active MnO x component, which diminished catalytic oxidation of SO 2 , thus promoting catalyst stability and limiting the toxic effect of SO 2 .

Deeply photocatalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides is still difficult to achieve, mainly limited by few intrinsic active sites and inefficient carrier separation of photocatalysts. Accordingly, we develop a simple room temperature tactic to introduce oxygen vacancies (OVs) into Bi 3 TaO 7 (BTO). Based on solid experimental and DFT theoretical supports, we explore the mechanism of NO removal over OVs decorated BTO (OVs-BTO). OVs can not only alter the distribution of local electrons to result in the formation of a fast charge transfer channel between OVs and the adjacent Ta atoms, which improves the transport rate of photogenerated carriers; but also function as active sites to adsorb small molecules (NO, O 2 and H 2 O), which being activated and positively drive the NO oxidation reaction. In order to investigate a possible reaction path, a combination of in-situ DRIFTS and simulated Gibbs free energy reveals that the intermediate products of OVs-BTO are helpful to promote the deep oxidation of NO to NO 3 - , while pristine BTO is more likely to produce NO 2 intermediate toxic by-products, which greatly hinders the deep photocatalytic oxidation of NO. This work provides insights into the role of OVs in photocatalysts, and also points out a guideline for the mechanism of semiconductor photocatalysts in eliminating gaseous pollutants .

Developing efficient catalysts for low reaction-temperature catalytic reduction of NO by CO (CO–DeNO x ) is desirable but very challenging. Here, we report that hierarchically interconnected porous (HIP) Mn x Co 3- x O 4 spinels, synthesized by a facile citric acid-assisted sol–gel method, can act as highly efficient catalysts for CO–DeNO x . The obtained Mn 0.3 Co 2.7 O 4 displayed a much-enhanced catalytic performance with 87% NO removal at 100 °C and a wide active-temperature window (100–400 °C). Its superior activity stems from the following reasons: (i) the high-valence of Mn 3+ , Mn 4+ , and Co 3+ species in the Co–O–Mn structure enables the high catalytic activity and the effective redox-cycling of the Co 3+ and Co 2+ adsorption sites; (ii) the HIP structure can significantly enhance gas diffusion. This work offers an avenue to design metal oxide catalysts for CO–DeNO x by effectively controlling the doping metal concentration and oxidation states of the active components.

Autologous skin flap transplantation is a common method for repairing complex soft tissue defects caused by cancer, trauma, and congenital malformations. Limited blood supply range and post-transplantation ischemia-reperfusion injury can lead to distal necrosis of the flap and long-term functional loss, which severely restricts the decision-making regarding the optimal surgical plan. To address this issue, we develop a hydrogel patch that releases carbon monoxide and nitric oxide gases on demand, to afford a timely blood supply for skin flap transplantation during surgery. Using an ischemia-reperfusion dorsal skin flap model in rats, we show that the hydrogel patch maintains the immediate opening of blood flow channels in transplanted tissue and effective blood perfusion throughout the perioperative period, activating perfusion of the hemodynamic donor site. We demonstrate that the hydrogel patch promotes distal vascularization and long-term functional reconstruction of transplanted tissues by inhibiting inflammatory damage and accelerating blood vessel formation.

Modifying photocatalysts for effective NO removal has profound implications for environmental protection. In this work, a novel g-C 3 N 4 containing non-intrinsic oxygen vacancies (V O -CN) is synthesized via a facile oxygen pre-doping followed by elimination. Compared to pristine g-C 3 N 4 , V O -CN exhibits remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity , increasing NO removal by 54.3%, with high NO 3 - selectivity. This photocatalytic enhancement is attributed to the non-intrinsic oxygen vacancies introduced in Vo-CN. As comprehensively revealed by experimental characterizations coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the midgap state generated in the V O -CN electronic band structure accelerates photogenerated electron-hole separation. Additionally, the unique surface structure of V O -CN provides favorable channels for carrier migration while enhancing O 2 and NO adsorption. Consequently, the markedly improved generation of reactive oxygen species by Vo-CN promotes highly efficient NO removal. This work provides novel insights into designing high-performance g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts for eliminating hazardous NO pollutants.

Plastic particles are common pollutants in our daily lives and cause a range of potential toxicities when ingested by living organisms. However, the complex morphology of plastic particles in the natural environment makes it difficult to assess their potential toxicity using conventional ecological monitoring techniques. Therefore, we constructed an electrochemical sensor based on gold/multi-wall carbon nanotube-Fe(III) meso -tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin/Nafion (Au/MWCNT-FeTCP/Nafion) composite material to evaluate the potential toxicity of plastic particles through the detection of nitric oxide (NO). The sensor exhibited good catalytic performance for NO with a linear relationship within 0.1–––0.7 μmol/L and 0.8–––5 μmol/L and a detection limit of 0.08 μM. We used this sensor to evaluate the changes in NO released by cells and tissues exposed to polystyrene (PS) plastic particles which showed that as the concentration of PS incubated with cells increased and the incubation time prolonged, the level of NO released by cells also increased. Notably, we combined immunofluorescence, immunoblotting, and electrochemical analysis methods simultaneously to reveal the cellular signaling pathway of NO production and apoptosis induced by PS. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the sensor in biomonitoring the oxidative damage of PS plastic particles on NO was further verified at the tissue level by constructing a mouse model treated with PS plastic particles. The sensor presented here offers a promising approach to study the biotoxicity of plastic particles and may contribute to the development of novel solutions for mitigating their hazardous effects on the human health.
