NO2 gas sensor with high selectivity and fast response based on Pt-loaded nanoporous GaN

Han Dan,Liu Xiaoru,Li Donghui,Shi Jiexu,Wang Yu,Wang Yuxuan,Wang Hongtao,Sang Shengbo

In this work, we realized a room-temperature nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensor based on a platinum (Pt)-loaded nanoporous gallium nitride (NP-GaN) sensing material using the thermal reduction method and coreduction with the catalysis of polyols. The gas sensor gained excellent sensitivity to NO 2 at a concentration range of 200 ppm to 100 ppb, benefiting from the loading of Pt nanoparticles, and exhibited a short response time (22 s) and recovery time (170 s) to 100 ppm of NO 2 at room temperature with excellent selectivity to NO 2 compared with other gases. This phenomenon was attributed to the spillover effect and the synergic electronic interaction with semiconductor materials of Pt, which not only provided more electrons for the adsorption of NO 2 molecules but also occupied effective sites, causing poor sites for other gases. The low detection limit of Pt/NP-GaN was 100 ppb, and the gas sensor still had a fast response 70 d after fabrication. Besides, the gas-sensing mechanism of the gas sensor was further elaborated to determine the reason leading to its improved properties. The significant spillover impact and oxygen dissociation of Pt provided advantages to its synergic electronic interaction with semiconductor materials, leading to the improvement of the gas properties of gas sensors.

Aluminum-based MOF for efficient iodine and methyl iodide capture from NO2-containing gas streams

Guangyuan Chen,Linzhen Wu,Zeru Wang,Ruixi Liu,Chuan Tan,Yi Tan,Yawen Liu,Miaomiao He,Hao Zhang,Yikun Huang,Jiongzhi Zhu,Tao Duan,Lin Zhu

The capture of radioactive gaseous iodine is essential for the sustainable development of nuclear energy and the long-term safe supply of nuclear fuel. However, the presence of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas generated during spent fuel reprocessing poses significant challenges to the stability of iodine adsorbents. It is crucial to consider the impact of NOx on the structure and adsorption performance of the materials. We report here the development of an aluminum-based metal–organic framework (MOF), CAU-1, engineered for efficient iodine capture. Synthesized through a cost-effective and straightforward method, CAU-1 exhibits excellent structural stability and robust adsorption performance, with a maximum iodine vapor adsorption capacity of 1277.18 mg/g at 130 °C and methyl iodide adsorption capacity of 533.10 mg/g, highlighting its potential for efficient iodine vapor removal. Notably, CAU-1 retains its structural integrity and iodine adsorption performance even in the presence of 5 % NO 2 , maintaining high adsorption capacities for I 2 (1129.41 mg/g) and CH 3 I (436.79 mg/g). Mechanistic analysis revealed the key role of the –NH 2 group in the iodine adsorption process. Additionally, co-adsorption studies with I 2 and NO 2 showed that CAU-1 can still capture iodine in the form of both I 2 and I 3 - in the presence of NO 2 . This study illustrates the potential of CAU-1 as an effective industrial adsorbent for removing iodine from NO 2 -containing gas streams.

UV light-activated Eu/ZnO flower-like microsphere for detecting NO2 gas with high response

Hang Liu,Junlong Liu,Yanchang Liu,Zhihao Qu,Siye Tian,Yuhong Zhang

In this work, the ZnO microsphere is prepared by hydrothermal method and modified with different concentrations of Eu. The morphology of ZnO:Eu sample shows flower-like microspheres with many nanosheets. The gas performance of ZnO:Eu microsphere is investigated for detecting NO 2 . Compared with pure ZnO, the response of ZnO:2 % Eu sensor is increased by 8 times, and the optimal operating temperature of that is decreased to 130 °C. Especially, the gas sensing properties of ZnO:2 % Eu sensor is enhanced under UV excitation. The recovery time of ZnO:Eu sensor is reduced by 1200 s, and the response is increased by 3.6 times under UV excitation. The above results show an increase in sensor response due to doping Eu and UV excitation. At last, the possible gas mechanism of ZnO:Eu is discussed with and without UV excitation. This finding provides important guidance for UV-assisted sensors to enhance NO 2 response.

Synthesis and application of UiO-66-NO2@Ag/AgCl nanocomposite as photocatalysts for water remediation

Xiao Ling,Xiaofeng Guo,Ke Wang,Ziming Huang,Zhixuan Mo,Huibo Qin,Linhai Duan,Xiuhong Meng,Hui Wang

Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water represents a highly promising strategy for environmental remediation. However, conventional photocatalysts are hampered by their inefficient employment of visible light energy and the propensity of photoinduced charge carriers to undergo recombination. To overcome these limitations, Z-scheme photocatalyst UiO-66-NO 2 @ Ag/AgCl (UiO@Ag-X, where X denotes the Ag/AgCl content) composites were designed and prepared. The crystal structure, morphology, photocatalytic performance, light absorption capacity, and carrier separation efficiency were systematically tested. Optical and electrochemical measurements revealed that the incorporation of Ag/AgCl enhanced the segregation and transfer efficiency of charge, which is crucial for boosting photocatalytic activity. These improvements directly contributed to the enhanced degradation efficiency observed in subsequent experiments. In experiments using methyl violet (MV) as the model pollutant, the photocatalytic degradation performance of UiO@Ag-X samples was evaluated. Among these samples, UiO@Ag-50 achieved a remarkable degradation efficiency under light irradiation. Moreover, the corresponding kinetic rate constant was about 0.04724 min -1 , which was higher than that of UiO-66-NO 2 . Quenching experiments were employed to investigate the mechanisms related to photocatalysis. The results show that hydroxyl radicals play an important role in the degradation of MV.

In-situ synthesized Sn-doped In2O3 nanorods for low-temperature NO2 sensing with high response

Yuhang Du,Longyu Ren,Jiliang Yuan,Ruojin Zhang,Mengmeng Xie,Hongyan Xu

As a key air pollutant, the efficient detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is of great significance for environmental monitoring. In this study, In 2 O 3 nanorods with different Sn doping concentrations (0–10 mol.%) were in-situ synthesized on Al 2 O 3 ceramic tubes via a one-step hydrothermal method combined with an annealing process. The structure, morphology, and NO 2 gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared materials were systematically investigated. Gas-sensing results demonstrate that 5 mol.% Sn-doped In 2 O 3 nanorods exhibit a high response (227.6) to 50 ppm NO 2 at 100 °C, which is 31 times that of pure In 2 O 3 (7.3). They also feature rapid response/recovery times (22 s/21 s), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability (response fluctuation <15 % over 30 days). Characterization results reveal that Sn 4 + is successfully incorporated into the In 2 O 3 lattice, leading to lattice contraction and an increase in oxygen vacancy content (oxygen vacancy ratio of 44.96 %). The gas-sensing mechanism, combining the adsorbed oxygen model with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, demonstrates that Sn doping enhances the adsorption energy and charge transfer between NO 2 and the sensing material.

Ultrahigh sensitive and selectivity NO2 gas sensors based on Sn-MOF derivates at low temperature

Shiyong Zhang,Zhenlong Zhao,Lihua Jia,Xiangfeng Guo,Rui Yang,Qingfang Deng,Desheng Zhang

Nitric oxides emission, especially nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), has aroused a series of environment and ecological problems and damaged human health, it is of great significance to monitor the NO 2 concentration in the atmosphere. However, developing the real-time NO 2 sensors remains challenge due to high working temperature, limited sensitivity at the low temperature and poor selectivity. Hence, we designed and synthesized the SnO 2 -M-O V - T sensors through thermal treating the Sn metal organic frameworks (Sn-MOF), and the prepared SnO 2 -M-O V - T sensors exhibits the excellent sensing performance under a low operating temperature. The response value of SnO 2 -M-O V -300 sensor for NO 2 could reach 11677 at 120 °C, that is 100 times than pristine SnO 2 , and the response value of 170 was also achieved even at the low temperature of 50 °C. In addition, the SnO 2 -M-O V -300 sensor also showed the good cyclicity and stability for NO 2 detection. Density functional theory results show that both the oxygen vacancy and Sn atom act as the adsorption and active sites during the process of NO 2 gas sensing, yet the role of oxygen vacancy prefers the adsorption and charge transfer for NO 2 than of Sn atom. The high-performance SnO 2 -M-O V - T gas sensors display a broad application prospect in the real-time monitoring NO 2 industrial field.

One-step synthesis of ZnO/SnO2-CNF nanocomposites for sensitive NO2 detection under UV illumination

Yan Liu,Xuebin Zhou,Zhihua Ying,Yuan Jiang

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) detection is critical for environmental and industrial safety, yet existing sensors often suffer from limited sensitivity and slow response. To address this, we report a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO/SnO 2 heterostructures via a one-step hydrothermal method using cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as a templating agent. Under UV activation, the optimized composite demonstrates a high response value of 45 toward 3 ppm NO 2 , along with rapid response and recovery times of 15 s and 20 s, respectively. The CNF-assisted synthesis significantly enhanced NO 2 sensitivity and selectivity compared to conventional methods, attributed to synergistic effects of increased surface area and interfacial charge transfer. This scalable approach enables high-performance NO 2 sensors for real-time monitoring.

Urchin-like dual-shelled ZnO/SnO2 hollow spheres for ultrahigh sensitive low-temperature NO2 sensing

Yanhui Sun,Dongye Han,Shupeng Sun,Yuhua Dong,Xiaogan Li,Kehan Qian

The semiconductor-based sensing materials with hollow and heterojunction structures were demonstrated significant advantages in critical performance metrics including sensitivity, operating temperature, and response/recovery time. In this study, the urchin-like dual-shelled ZnO/SnO 2 hollow spheres were effectively fabricated using a two-step hydrothermal approach. Compared with pure ZnO, the prepared ZnO/SnO 2 material exhibits a larger specific surface area, and abundant interface contact sites, showing significant improvements in NO 2 gas detection. Through the formation of hollow ZnO/SnO 2 heterojunctions, the optimal operating temperature has been successfully decreased from 150℃ to 65℃. Additionally, the ZnO/SnO 2 sensor exhibits a response of 449.4–10 ppm NO 2 , which is 8.7 times that of the ZnO-based sensor. Moreover, this sensor demonstrates a fast response/recovery time (47/50 s) and long-term stability of 60 days. Selective tests confirmed the high specificity of the ZnO/SnO 2 sensor to NO 2 gas (S nitrogen dioxide /S ammonia = 345.7). Additionally, the adsorption behaviors of NO 2 on the ZnO/SnO 2 heterojunction and ZnO surface were analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, providing theoretical insights for optimizing the performance of hollow core-shell structured sensors.

Humidity-Resistant Def-ZIF-8/PPY/BC@PDMS Composite for Dual NO2 and Strain Detection

Mingyin Qiu,Ying Men,Zhe Lin,Lipiao Bao,Ziyu Qin,Xing Lu

The growing demand for multifunctional sensors in wearable systems has prompted the need for materials that simultaneously support gas sensing and mechanical strain detection. However, current flexible sensing materials still suffer from issues such as response hysteresis, poor humidity resistance, and lack of antibacterial properties. Herein, we developed a ternary flexible composite by integrating defect-engineered ZIF-8, conductive polypyrrole (PPY), and bacterial cellulose (BC), which was further encapsulated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form the Def-ZIF-8/PPY/BC@PDMS composite. The results demonstrated that with 2–3 layers of PDMS, the sensor achieved a fast and stable NO 2 response (9.3% at 10 ppm), with reliable recovery. Under 80% relative humidity, PDMS reduced humidity-induced signals from 34% to 10.3%, confirming markedly improved moisture resistance. The incorporation of a PDMS layer enabled enhanced stress sensing, reducing the response/recovery times to 0.4/0.3 s from 0.9/0.8 s in the uncoated structure. The sensor demonstrated high fidelity in recognizing complex biomechanical signals such as swallowing, walking, and finger articulation. Furthermore, antibacterial testing confirmed 42.18% and 64.69% inhibition against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively. This multifunctional composite simultaneously optimizes gas sensing, mechanical flexibility, humidity resistance, and antibacterial efficacy, paving the way for advanced materials in fully integrated wearable sensing technologies.

2D SnSe2 nanoflakes decorated with 1D ZnO nanowires for ppb-level NO2 detection at room temperature

Xuezheng Guo,Yanqiao Ding,Xi Yang,Bingsheng Du,Chengjiu Zhao,Chengyao Liang,Yi Ou,Delin Kuang,Zhilin Wu,Yong He

The detection of air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is of great importance arising from its great harm to the ecological environment and human health. However, the detection range of most NO 2 sensors is ppm-level, and it is still challenging to achieve lower concentration (ppb-level) NO 2 detection. Herein, 2D tin diselenide nanoflakes decorated with 1D zinc oxide nanowires (SnSe 2 /ZnO) heterojunctions were first reported by facile hydrothermal and ultra-sonication methods. The response of the fabricated SnSe 2 /ZnO sensor enhances 3.41 times on average compared with that of pure SnSe 2 sensor to 50–150 ppb NO 2 with a high detection sensitivity (22.57 ppm -1 ) at room temperature. In addition, the SnSe 2 /ZnO sensor has complete recovery, negligible cross-sensitivity, and small relative standard deviation (6.98%) during the 1 month sensing test, which can meet the requirements for NO 2 detection in environmental monitoring. The enhanced NO 2 sensing performance can be attributed to the n-n heterojunction constructed between SnSe 2 and ZnO. The as-prepared sensor based on SnSe 2 /ZnO hybrid significantly promotes the development of the low detection limit of the NO 2 sensor at room temperature.

Ascorbic-acid-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of Pd-decorated WSe2 nanoflowers for high-performance NO2 gas sensing

Peicheng Han,Yunbo Shi,Canda Zheng,Bolun Tang,Qiaohua Feng

Green hydrothermal synthesis of flower-like WSe 2 using biodegradable ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. • Vacuum sintering at 450 ∘ ∘ C improved the crystallinity, surface activity, and charge transport of WSe 2 enhancing NO 2 sensing. • Optimal 3% Pd decoration enabled catalytic/interfacial sensitization, achieving a response of 2.26 toward 16 ppm NO 2 with good selectivity and stability. Although WSe 2 has shown great potential for NO 2 sensing, its development remains challenging because conventional hydrothermal synthesis often relies on hazardous reducing agents such as NaBH 4 and N 2 H 4 ⋅ 4⋅ H 2 O, which may cause rapid H 2 release, toxicity, and environmentally harmful byproducts. In addition, the sensing performance of WSe 2 is often limited by insufficient active sites and inefficient charge transfer. Herein, flower-like WSe 2 nanostructures were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route using benign, biodegradable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective C 6 H 8 O 6 as the reducing agent. The obtained WSe 2 was vacuum-sintered at the optimized temperature of 450 ∘ ∘ C and further decorated with Pd nanoparticles to enhance NO 2 sensing performance. The optimized 3% Pd-WSe 2 -450 ∘ ∘ C sensor exhibited a response ( R a / R g Ra/Rg ) of 2.26 toward 16 ppm NO 2 at an operating temperature of 114 ∘ ∘ C, with response and recovery times of 20 and 190 s, respectively. The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of Pd decoration, improved crystallinity, abundant surface oxygen species, and efficient interfacial charge modulation. This work demonstrates a Pd-modified WSe 2 -based NO 2 gas sensor, where green synthesis, vacuum sintering, and interfacial Pd engineering synergistically enhance the sensing performance. Wireless Wearable MOF-Based NH3 Gas Sensor Patch with a Zeolite Overlayer for Suppressing NO2 Interference

Yueru Jiang,Yu Wang,Tianshuang Wang,Liupeng Zhao,Dan Li,Xueying Kou,Peng Sun,Geyu Lu

Recent advances in flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) films have injected momentum into the development of wearable gas sensors. However, current MOF-based wearable sensors suffer from mutual interference and often compromise in power consumption and wearing comfort, limiting their suitability for skin-interfaced applications. Here, we report a wireless, battery-free, wearable gas sensor patch based on a flexible inductance-capacitance (LC) resonator. This sensor features a bilayer flexible film composed of a 2D bimetallic Cu/Co-HHTP conjugate MOF (c-MOF) sensing layer and a Pd/SSZ-13 zeolite overlayer. Specifically, the zeolite overlayer functions as an NO2-adsorbing interface that captures incoming NO2 molecules, thereby preventing them from reacting with the underlying 2D c-MOF sensing layer. Accordingly, the wireless sensor achieves linear and interference-resistant detection of low concentrated NH3 even in the presence of NO2, while maintaining excellent mechanical flexibility, cyclic stability, and negligible baseline drift, exhibiting less than 6.2% response attenuation after repeated bending at 120°. The performance of the device is further validated through a skin-adherent, wireless, passive sensing system capable of continuous NH3 monitoring in complex environments. The proposed wireless wearable MOF-based sensor patch is highly transformative, offering benefits for various wearable applications. Device performance under high-humidity conditions is still constrained, indicating that further optimization is necessary.
