Ultrasensitive NO2 Detection Utilizing Mesoporous ZnSe/ZnO Heterojunction-Based Chemiresistive-Type Sensors

Wei Liu,Ding Gu,Xiaogan Li

Mesoporous ZnSe/ZnO heterojunctions were prepared by the in situ thermal oxidation of ZnSe at elevated temperatures in air. The partial replacement of selenium by oxygen in the ZnSe nanoflakes led to a highly porous microstructure with 8.2 nm mesopores distributed fairly uniformly within the formed heterojunction sample. The as-fabricated mesoporous ZnSe/ZnO heterojunction-based sensor exhibits an approximately 7.3-fold significantly higher response than those of both pristine ZnO- and ZnSe-based sensors when exposed to 8 ppm NO2 at 200 °C. This sensor also demonstrates excellent selectivity for methanol, ethanol, acetone, benzene, methylbenzene, ammonia, and formaldehyde. The significantly enhanced response of the ZnSe/ZnO-based sensor is due to the mesoporous microstructure during thermal oxidation of ZnSe to ZnO, yielding more active sites and the accumulation of electrons in the ZnO nanocrystals transferred between ZnSe/ZnO interfaces.

Generalized ratiometric fluorescence nanosensors based on carbon dots and an advanced chemometric model

Xiu-Fang Yan,Zeng-Ping Chen,Ying Huang,Chao Kang,Ru-Qin Yu

Probe encapsulated by biologically localized embedding (PEBBLE) has emerged as a new type of sensing technique for complex systems. Generalized ratiometric PEBBLE nanosensors prepared by encapsulating an intensity-based probe and an inert reference dye inside the pores of stable matrix possess advantages of easy synthesis, immunity to interference, lower toxicity, and robustness to variations in probe loading. However, the selection of appropriate reference dyes used in generalized ratiometric PEBBLE nanosensors is a rather difficult task since they should satisfy some stringent requirements. In this contribution, the feasibility of using carbon dots (C-dots) as generic inert references in synthesizing PEBBLE nanosensors was first investigated in detail. And a dual-wavelength monitoring strategy and the quantitative fluorescence model for generalized ratiometric probes (QFM GRP ) were adopted to solve the problems brought by the use of carbon dots as inert references. C-dots doped PEBBLE nanosensors (C-PEBBLE nanosensors) for the quantification of NO 2 − NO2− and free Ca 2+ were synthesized by encapsulating C-dots and intensity based fluorescence probes (i.e., acriflavine for NO 2 − NO2− , and Rhod-2 for Ca 2+ , respectively) inside the pores of stable matrix. Experimental results showed that the combination of C-PEBBLEs, the QFM GRP model and the dual-wavelength monitoring strategy achieved accurate quantification of NO 2 − NO2− and the free Ca 2+ in real-world samples. Their quantitative results were in good consistence with those determined by HPLC and atomic absorption spectrophotometer, respectively. The strategies proposed in this contribution have generic applicability in the synthesis of PEBBLE nanosensors and their quantitative applications.

High stability trace NO2 detection of V-MOF based sensor at room temperature

Huajing Wang,Li Zeng,Xiao Wu,Baisheng Sa,Hanxin Chen,Rui Xiong,Dawen Zeng

The long-term stability of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) gas sensors is of great value in advancing their practical applications under complex environmental conditions (high humidity, high temperature, etc.). However, long-term stable and accurate gas detection by MOF sensors in an energy-efficient state remains a formidable challenge. In this work, the vanadium-based MOF MIL-47(V) is reported as a novel and efficient NO 2 sensing material, which exhibits intense response and trace detection with outstanding stability at room temperature (RT, 25 °C). The high specific surface area and abundant hollow channels of MIL-47(V) provide numerous active sites for the adsorption of NO 2 molecules. The high chemical stability and hydrophobicity enable the MIL-47(V) sensor to maintain long-term stability in the face of environmental disturbances. Furthermore, theoretical calculations validate the high reactivity of the V atoms and the hollow channels in MIL-47(V). The V sites demonstrate a strong adsorption energy of −0.87 eV to NO 2 , which enhances the interaction between the MIL-47(V) and NO 2 . The MIL-47(V) sensor shows outstanding NO 2 sensing properties at RT, with high sensitivity (response ≈ 2.89–10 ppm NO 2 ), trace detection limit (15 ppb), excellent long-term stability (response ≈ 2.11–3 ppm NO 2 , eight weeks) and good humidity resistance (response ≈ 1.21–1.14 to 0 %-80 % relative humidity, 100 ppb NO 2 ), which makes it remarkably attractive for ultrasensitive, accurate and reliable NO 2 detection at RT.

Solvent extraction for lithium isotope separation by 4-NO2-B15C5/[BMIm][NTf2] system

Lianjing Mao,Pengrui Zhang,Huiqun Ju,Xiaolong Zhou,Zixuan Xue,Ciming Wang,Jinhe Sun,Yongzhong Jia,Fei Shao,Xingwu Zou,Bo Li,Yan Jing

The evolution of the nuclear industry is inextricably linked to lithium isotopes. With its distinct benefits, the solvent extraction approach is projected to achieve industrial separation of lithium isotopes. However, the lack of studies on the extraction process conditions and mechanisms has limited the development of multi-stage processes. In this paper, based on the 4-NO 2 -B15C5/[BMIm][NTf 2 ] system, the process conditions and extraction mechanism of the system were investigated by thermodynamic and kinetic studies. The results indicate that lithium isotope separation is a spontaneous exothermic process controlled by diffusion. In addition, DFT calculations show that the binding sites of crown ether and Li + are located in the coronary heart of crown ether, and electrostatic and van der Waals forces mainly exist between them. On this basis, a 10-stage cross-flow extraction experiment was carried out using crown ether as the extractant. The aqueous phase feed solution is fully utilized, and the 7 Li abundance is increased to 93.29 %. In summary, this research provides a foundation for the development of synergistic multi-stage extraction techniques in the future.

Graphene oxide-mediated polymorphic engineering of In2O3 for boosted NO2 gas sensing performance

Jiayin Han,Yong Wang,Weirong Zhou,Dehao Kong,Yubing Gao,Yuan Gao,Geyu Lu

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a serious menace to human health and the environment, it is of great practical meaning to develop a fast and accurate gas sensor for monitoring low-concentration NO 2 at near room temperature (RT). Here, the polymorphism of In 2 O 3 was regulated with controllable mixed-phase ratios of hexagonal In 2 O 3 (h-In 2 O 3 ) and cubic In 2 O 3 (c-In 2 O 3 ) via a graphene oxide (GO)-mediated solvothermal approach and annealing treatment. The GO-mediation markedly promoted the formation of h-In 2 O 3 and defect content. The morphology, specific surface area, surface chemical state and activation energy were roundly analyzed. The NO 2 -sensing performance results showed that the sensor based on an 8 wt% GO-mediated In 2 O 3 sample (In 2 O 3 -8) exhibited an ultrahigh response of 1021 towards 1 ppm NO 2 at 30℃, which was 2.3 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 without GO-mediation. At the same time, the response/recovery time of In 2 O 3 -8 was significantly shorter than other sensors. Additionally, the In 2 O 3 -8 sensor possessed good repeatability and long stability. In 2 O 3 -8 with an appropriate GO-mediated content provided a suitable h-In 2 O 3 /c-In 2 O 3 phase junction interface, abundant oxygen vacancies and elevated Fermi energy levels of In 2 O 3 , which activated the surface sites and ultimately enhanced the sensing performance.

Molten-Salt-Synthesized La2CrO6/LaCrO3 Sensing Electrode for Highly Sensitive Impedancemetric NO2 Detection

Lei Dai,Fan Wu,Dekai Meng,Weiwei Meng,Yuehua Li,Ling Wang

Flake-like La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 sensing electrodes (SEs) were synthesized via a one-pot molten-salt method (MSM) for impedancemetric NO 2 sensors based on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte. The MSM-derived La 2 CrO 6 precursor underwent self-phase separation during high-temperature calcination, yielding a La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 composite SE with abundant heterointerfaces. Structural characterizations confirmed that the molten-salt-derived flakes provide a highly accessible surface and abundant La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 heterointerfaces after calcination, which effectively amplify the electrode/electrolyte interfacial electrochemical reactions toward NO 2 . Consequently, compared with single-phase LaCrO 3 , the La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 composite SE exhibits excellent sensitivity, which is attributed to the synergistic coupling effect in the sensing mechanism. La 2 CrO 6 provides strong adsorption sites, while LaCrO 3 ensures thermodynamic stability. By optimizing the temperature and time of the MSM reaction and the calcination parameters, the SE morphology and sensing performance were systematically improved. The optimal La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 sensing electrode, which was prepared by reacting at 500 °C for 1.5 h and then calcined at 800 °C, exhibited an outstanding sensitivity of 12.51 °/decade to NO 2 (25-700 ppm) at a working temperature of 400 °C. Additionally, the sensor exhibited superior repeatability, humidity resistance, and high anti-interference capabilities against various exhaust gases (H 2 , NH 3 , CH 4 , CO 2 , and NO). This work confirms that the molten salt method is a highly effective strategy for constructing high-performance composite sensing electrodes.

CuSiO3 Strengthens *NO2 Intermediate Affinity toward Highly Selective Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Long Cheng,Jie Gu,Yifan Leng,Xin Wang,Hongfang Du,Zuhao Wang,Yang Wang,Yuan-Yuan Hei,Chen Chen,Yuyu Liu,Zonghua Pu,Liangxu Lin

Developing high-performance catalysts for the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3–RR) is crucial for sustainable ammonia (NH3) production. Herein, we report copper silicate (CuSiO3) as a highly efficient and selective catalyst for NH3 production via the NO3–RR. In CuSiO3, the alternately arranged Cu–O octahedra among stable Si–O tetrahedra prevent the active Cu2+ centers from being transformed to the metallic Cu phase, thereby effectively suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Meanwhile, Si–O bonds withdraw electrons from Cu sites, leading the remaining electrons fill low-energy orbitals for a lower d-band center. This electron-withdrawing effect generates more vacant or partially filled Cu d orbitals that can accept electrons from the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) of adsorbed *NO3 and *NO2. As a result, CuSiO3 enhances the adsorption of the NO3– reactant to improve the NO3–RR activity and strengthens the affinity for *NO2 to inhibit byproduct production. Consequently, CuSiO3 delivers a high NH3 yield of 214.5 μmol h–1 mg–1 and a selectivity of 97.1% in 0.1 M Na2SO4 containing 10 mM NaNO3, even when the applied potential is as negative as −1.1 V. This work not only demonstrates CuSiO3 as a promising NO3–RR catalyst for the sustainable production of green NH3 but also offers valuable insights into the rational design of copper-based catalysts for a wide range of applications.

Electronic charge modulation in Bi2O3/SnO2 heterostructures for enhanced NO2 gas-sensing performance

Muhammad Javed Liaqat,Shahid Hussain,Adil Shafi Ganie,Mohammed Mujahid Alam,Rajesh Kumar Manavalan,Abdullah G. Al-Sehemi,Guanjun Qiao,Guiwu Liu

Environmental monitoring has become essential for recognizing and mitigating the effects of the increased release of hazardous gases on ecosystems and human health. NO 2 is harmful air pollutant, mainly emitted by combustion sources and is associated with respiratory problems and photochemical smog. The present investigation utilized a simple hydrothermal approach to synthesis Bi 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterostructures designed for the detection of NO 2 gas at low concentrations. The Bi/Sn-2 heterostructure exhibited a remarkable response (R g /R a ) of 105.4 upon exposure to 50 ppm of NO 2 gas. Furthermore, the Bi/Sn-2 heterostructure exhibited significant repeatability in its performance for 8 continuous cycles while ensuring long stability for 30 days. The exceptional responsiveness and selectivity towards NO 2 gas have been attributed to the formation of a p-n junction, augmented by the combined effect of increased surface area and unique morphological characteristics. This study demonstrates a viable approach to develop metal oxides heterojunctions that can detect low concentrations of NO 2 gas.

Magnetic Field-Enhanced NO2 Sensing in Co3O4 Microcubes: Insights from Magnetic Structure Evolution

Runjia Xu,Yinfang Xu,Yaru Liu,Jingxin Qi,Kaifeng Xue,Pinhua Zhang,Hongmei Liu,Guangliang Cui

A magnetic field can modulate the density and transport of charge carriers through magnetic moment rearrangement and Lorentzian forces, as well as enhance oxygen adsorption on semiconductor surfaces. This dual-action mechanism provides a robust platform for engineering sensitivity in metal oxide gas sensors. In this study, antiferromagnetic mesoporous Co3O4 microcubes were prepared by a hydrothermal method for ultrasensitive NO2 gas detection at room temperature under the assistance of a magnetic field. The gas response exhibits significant magnetic field enhancement to 0.5−100 ppm NO2, showing positive correlation with both field strength (≤150.8 mT) and gas concentration. At 150.8 mT, the response to 500 ppb NO2 increased nearly four-fold, with sensitivity increasing from 8 to 30. First-principles calculations combined with experimental studies reveal the magnetic structure evolution due to the adsorption enhancement of nitrogen dioxide/oxygen on bidentate cobalt sites under magnetic fields, establishing a physical mechanism of magnetic field-enhanced gas sensing. This work demonstrates magnetic field modulation as a generalizable strategy to transcend the performance limits of conventional metal oxide gas sensing materials.

From sensors to system-level integration: Flexible WO3/MoS2 heterojunction NO2 gas sensor

Mingyang Gao,Jun Guo,Xiaodong Yang,Yanjiang Zhou,José Artigas dos Santos Laranjeira,Julio R. Sambrano,Wen Zhang

While flexible gas sensors have attracted increasing attention, studies that advance their development toward system-level applications remain very limited. Here, we report a flexible WO 3 /MoS 2 nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensor. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of WO 3 and MoS 2 , the sensor exhibits a remarkable 364.5 % response to 1 ppm target gas, along with excellent selectivity, stability, and humidity tolerance. Moreover, the device maintains stable sensing performance under repeated bending, confirming its mechanical robustness for wearable applications. To demonstrate practical utility, the sensor was built into an ambient system that provides continuous OLED readout and triggers audible buzzer alarms once the NO 2 concentration exceeds user-defined thresholds. This work not only highlights the excellent sensing performance of the WO 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction device but also demonstrates its strong potential for system-level deployment in real-world air quality monitoring and personal exposure warning scenarios.

Photoactivated borophene-WS2 heterostructure enables ppt-level NO2 detection with wireless alarm integration

Shengxiang Gao,Yanpeng Ji,Zhilin Zhao,Yi Liu,Anran Ma,Jiamin Wu,Chuang Hou,Jinsong Liu,Guoan Tai

Realizing reliable detection of ultralow-concentration nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) at room temperature remains a critical challenge for practical gas sensing. Here, we report a photoactivated sensor based on a van der Waals heterostructure of borophene and WS 2 , which uniquely integrates the high surface reactivity of borophene with efficient interfacial charge transfer across the heterojunction. Under 255 nm ultraviolet illumination, the sensor delivers an exceptional sensitivity of 19,047.5 % at 50 ppm NO 2 and maintains linear response down to 1 ppb, with an ultralow theoretical detection limit of 76.4 ppt. Compared with state-of-the-art two-dimensional (2D) material (rGO, MXene and MoS 2 ) based NO 2 sensors, these metrics represent one to two orders of magnitude improvement in both sensitivity and detection limit under ambient conditions. The device also exhibits high Rela_recover rate (>85 %), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability with only 6.7 % degradation over 30 days, outperforming many reported counterparts. First-principles calculations reveal that NO 2 preferentially adsorbs on the borophene surface, where strong interfacial coupling facilitates charge transfer and dynamically modulates adsorption–desorption kinetics under illumination. Furthermore, to enable real-world applicability, we integrate the sensor into a wireless alarm system, achieving continuous remote surveillance and timely hazard notification. This work establishes borophene-based heterostructures as a novel and highly promising platform for ultratrace gas detection and intelligent environmental monitoring.

Flexible resistive NO2 gas sensor of SnO2@Ti3C2Tx MXene for room temperature application

Xin Liu,Hanmei Zhang,Tao Shen,Jianbo Sun

SnO 2 nanoparticles@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene have been successfully synthesized by a flexible solvothermal method. The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was evenly anchored by the SnO 2 nanoparticles (∼5 nm) through the controllable assembly heterojunction . Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene contributed to the improvement of material conductivity compared to SnO 2 nanoparticles. The combination of SnO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity to NO 2 at room temperature (RT). Compared with pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, the sensitivity of TCS1.5 nanocomposite increases more than 20 times to 300 ppm NO 2 at RT. In order to explore the sensing mechanism of SnO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite to NO 2 , nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm technology and DFT calculations were performed. They demonstrated that the high specific surface area, well-proportioned heterogeneous structure of SnO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, and the vital ionic bonds of Sn–N and O–N formed between substrate and NO 2 gas had beneficial effect on improving the gas response capability.
