Noble-metal-free Ni2P as cocatalyst decorated rapid microwave solvothermal synthesis of inorganic-organic CdS-DETA hybrids for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Taiping Hu,Kai Dai,Jinfeng Zhang,Guangping Zhu,Changhao Liang

Inorganic-organic hybrid materials, a class of probable candidates for combining two counterparts into one structure could be beneficial for improving or combing the excellent electronic, magnetic, rigidity and thermal stability, and optical feathers of inorganic frameworks with diverse structure, processability, flexibility and good geometric controllability of organic molecules. Anchoring inorganic-organic hybrid materials with cocatalysts is a usually used strategy for enhancing their catalytic performance. However, noble metal cocatalysts always limit their practical application. Herein, we report that noble metal free cocatalyst of Ni 2 P decorated CdS-diethylenetriamine (CdS-DETA) can effectively overcome this limitation to achieve highly photocatalytic hydrogen production . The rapid microwave solvothermal synthesis of CdS-DETA (MCdS-DETA) process shortens reaction time, saves energy and lead to achieve highly photocatalytic activity due to its low crystallinity . When Ni 2 P decorated MCdS-DETA, The 0.4%Ni 2 P/MCdS-DETA exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (6836 μmmol h −1  g −1 ), which is 4.14 times, 2.06 times and 1.34 times higher than traditional solvothermal CdS-DETA(TCdS-DETA), MCdS-DETA and Pt cocatalysted MCdS-DETA, respectively. The method reported here can be extended to other inorganic-organic hybrid materials, and develops new strategies for exploring inorganic-organic hybrid-based photocatalysts .

One-step Synthesis of Self-standing Ni3S2/Ni2P Heteronanorods on Nickel Foam for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution over a Wide pH Range

Yun Zhou,Tongtong Li,Shengqi Xi,Cheng He,Xigang Yang,Hongjing Wu

Graphical Please stand up : Self-standing Ni 3 S 2 /Ni 2 P heteronanorod arrays were successfully grown on nickel foam (Ni-S−P NRs/NF) via a facile simultaneous phosphorization and sulfurization thermal treatment of NF at a low temperature. The Ni-S−P NRs/NF exhibited excellent and stable hydrogen evolution reaction catalytic activity in a wide pH range, which can be attributed to the rational configuration and the coupling interactions between Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 2 P. The development of efficient, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through a facile strategy is undoubtedly vital to realize sustainable production of H 2 in water splitting but still challenging. Herein, we present a one-step approach, a simultaneous phosphorization and sulfurization thermal treatment of NF at low temperature, to direct grow Ni-S−P heteronanorod arrays consisting of Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 2 P on nickel foam (Ni-S−P NRs/NF). Due to the direct growth, one-dimensional structure and good conductivity of the catalyst hybrid, as well as the synergistic effect between Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 2 P, the resultant Ni-S−P NRs/NF exhibited excellent HER electrocatalytic activity over a wide pH range. Ni-S−P NRs/NF shows an overpotential of 180, 148 and 292 mV to reach the current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M PBS solution, respectively. DFT theoretical calculations was further confirmed that the superior pH-universal HER activity of Ni-S−P NRs/NF is originated from the thermo-neutral hydrogen adsorption free energy and the enhanced adsorption of water molecular by the Ni 3 S 2 /Ni 2 P heterostructure.

Mo-doped and vacancy-rich Ni2P@NC anode: A dual-strategy approach to high-capacity and long cycle life sodium-ion batteries

Qiangqiang Shi,Shuling Liu,Xinyue Liu,Jiale Guo,Zhipeng Qin,Jianbo Tong

The development of high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) remains critical to overcome the limitations of lithium-ion technologies. In this work, Mo-doped Ni 2 P encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (Mo-Ni 2 P@NC) SIB anodes with nanosheet-stacked porous architectures through a solvothermal and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach were synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed lattice expansion due to Mo substitution. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that Mo doping significantly enhanced the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) from 51.6 % (pristine Ni 2 P) to 70.2 % and achieved a reversible specific capacity of 456 mAh g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 after 2000 cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that Mo doping induced charge redistribution, lowered Na + adsorption energy. Furthermore, vacancy defects produced by Mo-doping facilitate rapid ion transport and pseudocapacitive-dominated Na + storage behavior minimized volume changes, ensuring long-term stability. Simultaneously, the optimized Mo-Ni 2 P@NC-2||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C full-cell delivered 143 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , highlighting its practical application. This work elucidates the synergistic effects of heteroatom doping and vacancy in enhancing SIB anode performance, providing a strategy for designing high-ICE and durable energy storage materials.

Ultra-low amount Pt-doped Co2P/Ni2P on nickel foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction in an alkaline electrolyte

Xin Xiao,Dongping Sun,Xiaoheng Liu,Bo Qiu,Xingyou Xu,Dongen Zhang,Tao Yang

It is still a challenge to design an efficient and low-cost electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline electrolyte. Herein, ultra-low amount Pt-doped Co2P/Ni2P on nickel foam (Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF) was facilely synthesized via an in situ controlled growth and used as an efficient electrocatalyst for electrolytic water splitting into hydrogen. Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF was achieved by a two-step procedure that was conducted by the hydrothermal approach to obtain the precursor, followed by a subsequent in situ phosphorization procedure. Due to the NF substrate being supermacroporous, more active sites of Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF could be exposed, improving electron transport and providing open-channels for the rapid release of H2. Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic performance towards HER with an overpotential of 75 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in an alkaline electrolyte and a small Tafel slope of 64 mV dec−1. This work provided a facile and reliable synthetic approach to improve transition metal phosphides (TMPs) for electrocatalytic HER performance in alkaline electrolytes.

A three-phase and multi-interface NiMnP/Ni2P/MnP4/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst with rose-shaped morphology improving the performance of overall water splitting

Xiaoya Yuan,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Yanning Qu,Jianlong Wen,Congcong Lin,Linyin Huang,Xinyue Wei,Bingshe Xu

A three-dimensional rose-like micro-nano structured NiMnP/Ni 2 P/MnP 4 multiphase heterogeneous architecture was fabricated on nickel foam via hydrothermal and phosphorization processes. The 3D micro-nano structure conferred the catalyst with excellent hydrophilicity, facilitating electrolyte penetration on its surface and thereby enhancing charge and reaction medium transport. The multiphase heterogeneous structure provided abundant heterogeneous interfaces, thereby offering more active sites. Additionally, the interface electron reconstruction resulted in lower interfacial charge transport resistance (2.12 Ω), enabling faster catalytic reaction kinetics. As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, the NiMnP/Ni 2 P/MnP 4 /NF composite achieved a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with 57 mV and 74 mV for HER overpotential in acidic and basic electrolytes, respectively, close to the Pt/C catalyst (31 mV in acidic and 57 mV in basic). Its OER overpotential was only 232 mV@ 10 mA cm −2 , even lower than the noble metal OER catalyst of RuO 2 (260 mV@ 10 mA/cm 2 ). Moreover, in overall water splitting tests, the NiMnP/Ni 2 P/MnP 4 /NF∥NiMnP/Ni 2 P/MnP 4 /NF cell required only 1.54 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 , comparable to that of all-pure-precious-metal cell (1.52 V in Pt/C∥RuO 2 ).

M (M = Co, Zn)-modified Ni2P with carbon coating grown on Ni foam as efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting under fluctuating power

Long Xie,Jiaxuan Guo,Tianhao Wang,Xiaoqiang Du,Xiaoshuang Zhang

Electrolyzing water to produce hydrogen is currently one of the most attractive methods to alleviate the energy problem and environmental pollution. However, the slow oxygen production kinetics and complex mechanism have greatly limited its large-scale application. In our study, multiple types carbon-encapsulated C@M-Ni 2 P/NF (M = Co, Zn) were synthesized via impregnation and phosphidation process for the first time to address the need for environmentally friendly and high-performance bifunctional catalysts in electrocatalytic water splitting. Electrochemical tests revealed C@Co-Ni 2 P/NF present excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in an alkaline medium. The overpotentials were 196/255/294 mV at 10/50/100 mA·cm −2 (Tafel slope 34.20 mV·dec −1 ) for OER; the overpotentials were 199/311/363 mV for HER, which is outperforming C@Zn-Ni 2 P/NF, Ni 2 P/NF, and bare NF. The experimental analysis demonstrate that the improvement in performance for C@Co-Ni 2 P/NF is attributed to a “crack-texture interwoven” hierarchical pore structure and a protective surface carbon layer. In addition, when it is assembled into a two-electrode system, the electrolytic cell demonstrates excellent electrochemistry performance and acceptable durability under fluctuating power. In-situ Raman characterization demonstrated that the in-situ generated NiOOH and CoOOH, along with the material itself, synergistically catalyzed, resulting in the high activity of the catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis confirmed Co modification optimized water adsorption energy (-0.52 eV) and enhanced conductivity of C@Co-Ni 2 P/NF electrode by regulation of the d -band center. This study offers a promising and feasible strategy for developing robust and high-performance electrocatalysts.

The Scalable Solid-State Synthesis of a Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi Alloy Encapsulated into a Hierarchical Porous Carbon Framework for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Xiangyun Tian,Peng Yi,Junwei Sun,Caiyun Li,Rongzhan Liu,Jian-Kun Sun

The exploration of high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for large-scale water/seawater splitting. Herein, we develop a strategy involving the in situ generation of a template and pore-former to encapsulate a Ni5P4/Ni2P heterojunction and dispersive FeNi alloy hybrid particles into a three-dimensional hierarchical porous graphitic carbon framework (labeled as Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C) via a room-temperature solid-state grinding and sodium-carbonate-assisted pyrolysis method. The synergistic effect of the components and the architecture provides a large surface area with a sufficient number of active sites and a hierarchical porous pathway for efficient electron transfer and mass diffusion. Furthermore, a graphitic carbon coating layer restrains the corrosion of alloy particles to boost the long-term durability of the catalyst. Consequently, the Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C catalyst exhibits extraordinary OER activity with a low overpotential of 242 mV (10 mA cm−2), outperforming the commercial RuO2catalyst in 1 M KOH. Meanwhile, a scale-up of the Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C catalyst created by a ball-milling method displays a similar level of activity to the above grinding method. In 1 M KOH + seawater electrolyte, Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C also displays excellent stability; it can continuously operate for 160 h with a negligible potential increase of 2 mV. This work may provide a new avenue for facile mass production of an efficient electrocatalyst for water/seawater splitting and diverse other applications. Keywords:FeNi alloy;Ni5P4/Ni2P heterojunction;solid-state grinding;in situ template;oxygen evolution reaction

Accelerate the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction of the heterostructural Ni2P@Ni(OH)2/NF by dispersing a trifle of Ru on the surface

Qi Zhang,Shihui Jiao,Boran Wang,Zisheng Wang,Xinyan Lv,Wenwen Wang,Yumei Tan,Canyu Cui,Yan Chen

Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production plays a vital role in the development of new energy field, but there is still a lack of low-content precious metal or cost-effective non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Therefore, how to develop the catalysts with a smaller amount of precious metal to achieve higher performance is still a major challenge. Herein, we have fabricated Ru–Ni 2 P@Ni(OH) 2 /NF-2 heterostructure by phosphating Ni(OH) 2 /NF and then anchoring Ru on the surface through wet chemical strategy. Benefiting from its optimal Δ G H∗ and synergistic effect , this Ru–Ni 2 P@Ni(OH) 2 /NF-2 catalyst shows superior electrocatalytic HER kinetics in alkaline electrolyte . A small overpotential of 31 mV is needed for this electrocatalyst to obtain the current densities of 10 mA cm −2 with remarkable durability over 24 h. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of effective HER electrocatalyst with a low precious metal content.

Ni2P@carbon core-shell nanorod array derived from ZIF-67-Ni: Effect of phosphorization temperature on morphology, structure and hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Suqi He,Suyu He,Feng Gao,Xin Bo,Qingxiang Wang,Xianjue Chen,Jingjing Duan,Chuan Zhao

MOFs attracted considerable attention as morphology templates and constitution precursors for synthesis of multiple functional nanocomposites due to their diverse and robust framework structure. In this work, a nickel-phosphide@carbon (Ni 2 P@C) composite with unique nanorod array morphology was synthesized via a facile phosphorization process using Ni(II)-zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67-Ni) as the precursor. And the effect of phosphorization temperature on the morphology and structure of the products were carefully investigated. The products obtained under different phosphorization temperature were utilized as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed that Ni 2 P@C nanorod array achieved under the phosphorization temperature of 400 °C demonstrated the highest electrocatalytic activity toward HER in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution with a low overpotential of 186 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Also, high catalytic durability and chemical stability of the Ni 2 P@C nanorod array for HER were achieved. Combing the morphology and structure characterization experiments, the reason for high HER performance of Ni 2 P@C nanorod array obtained at the phosphorization temperature of 400 °C was discussed. This work provides a new guidance for the synthesis of high-performance MOFs-derived electrocatalyst for electrochemical HER.

Qingli Xu,Wenluan Gao,Miao Wang,Gang Yuan,Xiaona Ren,Rong Zhao,Sida Zhao,Qingfa Wang

To develop earth-abundant and cost-effective catalysts for overall water splitting is still a major challenge. Herein, a unique “raisins-on-bread” Ni–S–P electrocatalyst with NiS and Ni 2 P nanoparticles embedded in amorphous Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets is fabricated on Ni foam by a facile and controllable electrodeposition approach. It only requires an overpotential of 120 mV for HER and 219 mV for OER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. Employed as the anode and cathode , it demonstrates extraordinary electrocatalytic overall water splitting activity (cell voltage of only 1.58 V @ 10 mA cm −2 ) and ultra-stability (160 h @ 10 mA cm −2 or 120 h @50 mA cm −2 ) in alkaline media . The synergetic electronic interactions, enhanced mass and charge transfers at the heterointerfaces facilitate HER and OER processes. Combined with a silicon PV cell, this Ni–S–P bifunctional catalyst also exhibits highly efficient solar-driven water splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 12.5%.

A facile synthesis of sub-10 nm Ni2P/g-C3N4 photocatalytic composite with ohmic contact for clean H2-energy generation under visible light irradiation

Shen Xu,Jianying Huang,Zengxing Li,Yonggang Lei,Yingzhen Zhang,Kim Hoong Ng,Yuekun Lai

It is very attractive to find a cheap and efficient cocatalyst for enhancing the H 2 generation of graphitic carbon nitride (CN) under visible light. To achieve that, we proposed a novel two-step method to deposit sub-10 nm metallic Ni 2 P particles on the surface of CN sheets for a maximized interfacial contact. Characteristic results confirmed the establishment of ohmic heterojunction upon Ni 2 P-modification of CN, which deemed to be an effective measure to alleviate photo-charges recombination. In addition to facilitating spatial separation of charges, Ni 2 P could also enhance the optical properties of CN while reducing its impedance for interfacial electron shuttling. Better still, the P-end of Ni 2 P is highly electronegative, offering desirable H + -capturing capability for enhanced H 2 generation. These give rise to an improved H 2 production of Ni 2 P/CN composite, optimally at 645.3 μmol g −1 ·h −1 as compared to immeasurable H 2 yielded by the pristine CN. Such photocatalytic performance is even comparable to the Pt-modified CN photocatalyst (640.6 μmol g −1 ·h −1 ). In recyclability test, a notable activity suppression of 33.17% was recorded after four reaction cycles. This can be ascribed to the pronounced photo-corrosion of the Ni 2 P cocatalyst during photoreaction. Nonetheless, a remarkably high H 2 generation (1328.6 μmol g −1 in 3 h) was still attained at 4 th cycle. This justifies the effectiveness of our synthesized Ni 2 P cocatalyst in enhancing H 2 generation of CN under visible light irradiation.

Rational regulation on charge spatial separation and directional migration in the yolk-shell structural SiO2/Ni2P/rGO/Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoreactor for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Pengpeng Zhang,Chao Xue,Yukun Li,Shuaiwei Guo,Xilai Zhang,Peng Zhang,Guosheng Shao

High-efficiency light utilization and prolonged lifetime of photo-induced charge carriers is a key step towards superior photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Herein, the design of a novel spatially separated Ni 2 P co-catalyst decorated SiO 2 /rGO/Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S yolk-shell structural photocatalytic nanoreactor is reported. In this system, the advantages of ultrathin mesoporous shell and yolk-shell structure not only facilitate the mass diffusion with short length, but also allow broad-spectrum light absorption and increase the density of catalytic active sites. Importantly, the photo-generated electrons can be directionally injected from the outermost Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S shell to the spatially separated Ni 2 P co-catalyst. The dynamic behaviors of photo-induced charge carriers can be rationally regulated by the suitable energy level alignment and the built-in electric fields derived from both sides of embedded rGO interlayer. The synergistic effects of the excellent light-harvesting ability, more exposed active sites and improved charge separation efficiency significantly boosted the photocatalytic performances of hydrogen evolution. As a result, the optimal SiO 2 /Ni 2 P/rGO/Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S composite exhibited the highest hydrogen generation of 11.65 mmoL‧g −1 ‧h −1 , even after five cycles. This work proposes new insights into the design of the efficient hollow sphere structural heterojunctions for photocatalytic water splitting applications.
