Co-Construction of Sulfur Vacancies and Heterogeneous Interface into Ni3S2/MoS2 Catalysts to Achieve Highly Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Zhaoyang An,Hui Xue,Jing Sun,Niankun Guo,Tianshan Song,Jiawen Sun,Yi-Ru Hao,Qin Wang

Integrating the advantages of anion vacancies and heterostructures into the catalytic materials may increase the binding affinities to intermediates, provide more active sites, and significantly promote the activity of overall water splitting. However, the successful assembly of anion vacancies and heterostructures for high-efficiency water splitting performance is still challenging. In this work, we ingeniously present the co-construction of sulfur vacancies and heterogeneous interface into Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 catalysts on nickel foam (NF). The introduction of sulfur vacancies and Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 heterostructures can significantly improve electron and ion transport, effectively improve structural stability, and enhance overall water splitting activity. The obtained V S -Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 catalysts (V S stands for sulfur vacancies) exhibit superior OER and HER activities, and the overpotentials for OER and HER are 180 and 71 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , respectively. Furthermore, a low water splitting voltage of 1.46 V is required at 10 mA·cm −2 for the V S -Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 catalysts, which is considerably lower than most that of water splitting electrocatalysts currently reported. This work offers an effective mean for the preparation of catalysts with both anion vacancies and heterostructures for achieving high-performance alkaline overall water splitting.

Spherical V-doped nickel–iron LDH decorated on Ni3S2 as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction

Jie Bai,Tianning Zhou,Yihao Gao,Meilin Zhang,Xiaofei Jing,Yaqiong Gong

Due to the slow reaction kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the electrolysis rate of water is greatly limited. Therefore, it is of great significance to study stable and efficient non-noble metal based electrocatalysts. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) spherical V-NiFe LDH@Ni3S2 was developed by exquisitely decorating ultra-thin V-doped NiFe layered dihydroxide (NiFe-LDH) on Ni3S2 nanosheets supported by nickel foam (NF). It is worth mentioning that V-NiFe LDH@Ni3S2 exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic performance and only 178 mV overpotential is required in 1 M KOH to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Long-term chronoamperometry manifests its superior electrochemical stability. The combination of NiFe LDH and conductive substrate coupling can drastically afford abundant active sites and accelerate charge transfer, and V doping can markedly regulate the electronic structure. Therefore, the activity and durability of the electrocatalysts are greatly improved. This study may provide a new strategy for the preparation of efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Formation of hierarchical Ni3S2 nanohorn arrays driven by in-situ generation of VS4 nanocrystals for boosting alkaline water splitting

Dan Yang,Liyun Cao,Liangliang Feng,Jianfeng Huang,Koji Kajiyoshi,Yongqiang Feng,Qianqian Liu,Wenbin Li,Li Feng,Guojuan Hai

The synergistic achievement of geometric optimization and surface/interfacial modulation of electrocatalysts for booting the overall efficiency of water splitting is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, a novel hierarchical Ni 3 S 2 /VS 4 nanohorn array grown on nickel foam (NS-horn/NF) is prepared by a self-driven synthesis strategy. We demonstrate that in-situ generation of VS 4 in the NS-horn/NF not only triggers the formation of such unique hierarchical architecture, but favors the graft of enriched active bridging S 2 2− on the strong coupling interface between Ni 3 S 2 and VS 4 , and thus the enhanced HER kinetics. More importantly, the abundant active nickel oxides for the OER availably form on the interface benefiting from the surface reconstruction of NS-horn/NF due to the partial leaching of vanadium (IV) of VS 4 , which promotes the adsorption of OH − and leads to the fast OER rate-determining step in alkaline media. When employed to assemble an alkaline electrolyzer as both anode and cathode, NS-horn/NF electrode only needs a small voltage of 1.57 V to yield 10 mA cm −2 and retains this activity for at least 70 h. Our findings put forward fresh insights into the rational design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts toward water spitting for next-generation energy conversion and storage devices.

Nitrogen-doped carbon shell-confined Ni3S2 composite nanosheets derived from Ni-MOF for high performance sodium-ion battery anodes

Wei Shuang,Hui Huang,Lingjun Kong,Ming Zhong,Ang Li,Danhong Wang,Yunhua Xu,Xian-He Bu

Nickel sulfides are suitable anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their moderate cost and high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, low cycling stability and rate performance caused by volume expansion and inferior electronic conductivity during the charge/discharge process still hamper their development. Herein, Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles uniformly embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Ni 3 S 2 @C) are synthesized by sulfuration of a Ni-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), followed by coating with polypyrrole (PPy). The PPy protects Ni 3 S 2 particles from aggregation, and is converted to N-doped carbon shell during the annealing process . The nano-sized structure accelerates reaction kinetics and minimizes stress/strain caused by volume changes. The N-doped carbon nanosheets connect the transmission pathway of the electrons, and buffer the volume change during the electrochemical reaction . As expected, NiSx@C-600 delivers superior sodium storage performance with a high discharge capacity of 432.8 mA h g −1  at 0.2 A g −1 over 100 cycles and remarkable rate capacity of 371.6 mA h g −1  at a high rate of 6.4 A g −1 . To the best of our knowledge, the obtained nanosheets exhibit the best rate performance among current Ni 3 S 2 composites. The proposed method for enhancing conductivity and doping heteroatom by using PPy provides a novel insight to design SIB anodes with superior performance.

A Fe-doped Ni3S2 particle film as a high-efficiency robust oxygen evolution electrode with very high current density

Ningyan Cheng,Qian Liu,Abdullah M. Asiri,Wei Xing,Xuping Sun

The efficiency of water splitting is mainly limited by the low rate of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and it is thus of great importance but still remains a huge challenge to develop efficient OER catalysts capable of delivering high current densities at low overpotentials. Herein, we describe our recent finding that a Fe-doped Ni3S2 particle film with 11.8% Fe-content hydrothermally grown on nickel foam (Fe11.8%-Ni3S2/NF) behaves as a highly active robust oxygen evolution electrode in strongly alkaline media. This electrode needs an overpotential of only 253 mV to achieve 100 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 65.5 mV dec−1 and maintains its catalytic activity for at least 14 h in 1 M KOH, and the NiOOH and FeOOH formed at the Fe11.8%-Ni3S2 surface are the actual catalytic sites. Notably, it also operates efficiently and stably in 30 wt% KOH, capable of affording very high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm−2 at small overpotentials of 238 and 269 mV, respectively, with a faradaic efficiency of 100%.

Designing Zn-doped nickel sulfide catalysts with an optimized electronic structure for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Wenjun He,Hui Liu,Jianing Cheng,Jing Mao,Cong Chen,Qiuyan Hao,Jianling Zhao,Caichi Liu,Ying Li,Limin Liang

Designing non-noble-metal electrocatalysts with excellent performance and economic benefits toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is extremely crucial for future energy development. In particular, the rational cationic-doped strategy can effectively tailor the electronic structure of the catalysts and improve the free energy of the adsorbed intermediate, thus enhancing HER performance. Herein we reported Zn-doped Ni3S2 nanosheet arrays supported on Ni foam (Zn-Ni3S2/NF) that were synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal process for improving HER catalysis under alkaline conditions. Remarkably, the obtained Zn-Ni3S2/NF displays excellent HER catalytic performance with an overpotential of 78 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and dramatic long-term stability for 18 h in 1 M KOH. In addition, the results based on the density functional theory calculations reveal that Zn dopants can modulate the electronic structure of Ni3S2 and optimize the hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔGH*). Thus cationic-doping engineering provides an efficient method to enhance the intrinsic activities of transition-metal sulfides, which may contribute to the development of nonprecious electrocatalysts for HER.

Deep eutectic solvent-assisted in-situ synthesis of nanosheet-packed Ni3S2 porous spheres on Ni foam for high-performance supercapacitors

Lu Chen,Junrong Zeng,Mengwei Guo,Ruichang Xue,Rongrong Deng,Qibo Zhang

Herein, self-supported Ni 3 S 2 spherical clusters packed with well-defined nanosheets developed on Ni foam (NF) were rationally fabricated via a novel low-temperature solvothermal sulfurization approach in a choline chloride/ethylene glycol (Ethaline)-based deep eutectic solvent (DES). The DES-based sulfurization process drove an interesting time-dependent surface restructuring and phase transformation that occurred on the Ni substrate, leading to the in-situ formation of a Ni 3 S 2 layer with controllable architecture. Pre-deposition of a Ni interlayer on the NF substrate provides more assessable electrochemical surface area and reaction sites, which favored fast crystal nucleation/growth and structural reconstruction. Benefiting from the integrated design and unique 3D interdigital architecture, the optimized Ni 3 S 2 _5/Ni/NF with a sulfurization time of 5 h exhibits a high specific capacitance (specific capacity) of 5,633 mF cm −2 (860.6 μAh cm −2 ) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and maintains 87.7% of initial specific capacitance after 1,000 charge–discharge process at a current density of 20 mA cm −2 . This facile DES-driven solvothermal sulfurization strategy for the fabrication of integrated metal sulfides-based electrode materials could be promising for practical applications in high-performance electrochemical devices.

Rui Ming,JingJing Du,Shaobo Ye,Zhao Liang,Qiao Liu,Xuyang Lu,Qiliang Wei,Weiyou Yang,Qing Shi

The design of efficient and cost-effective bifunctional catalysts to replace precious metal-based catalysts remains a critical challenge in electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, we report a Mo-Fe co-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanorod arrays grown on a nickel-iron foam substrate via a facile hydrothermal synthesis. This dual metal-doped nanorod structure synergistically modulates the electronic structure while maximizing accessible active sites, endowing the Mo-Fe-Ni 3 S 2 electrode with exceptional bifunctional activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The resulting Mo-Fe-Ni 3 S 2 electrode requires only 180   mV for HER and 275   mV for OER at a current density of 100   mA   cm −2 , coupled with long-term stability exceeding 50   h. Remarkably, when integrated into a single-stack cell for practical application, the Mo-Fe-Ni 3 S 2 electrode exhibits outstanding performance, achieving a current density of 100   mA   cm −2 at a potential of 1.87   V and showing no potential degradation after 100   hours of continuous operation at 100   mA   cm −2 . This work not only presents a high-performance bifunctional catalyst but also provides fundamental insights into the design of advanced electrocatalysts through rational heteroatom doping strategies.

Lignosulfonate-assisted in situ synthesis of Co9S8–Ni3S2 heterojunctions encapsulated by S/N co-doped biochar for efficient water oxidation

Xuliang Lin,Lijing Xue,Bowen Liu,Xueqing Qiu,Jianglin Liu,Xiaofei Wang,Yi Qi,Yanlin Qin

The development of highly active and stable earth-rich electrocatalysts remains a major challenge to release the reliance on noble metal catalysts in sustainable (electro)chemical processes. In this work, metal sulfides encapsulated with S/N co-doped carbon were synthesized with a one-step pyrolysis strategy, where S was introduced during the self-assembly process of sodium lignosulfonate. Due to the precise coordination of Ni and Co ions with lignosulfonate, an intense-interacted Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 heterojunction was formed inside the carbon shell, causing the redistribution of electrons. An overpotential as low as 200 mV was obtained over Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 @SNC to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Only a slight increase of 14.4 mV was observed in a 50 h chronoamperometric stability test. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 heterojunctions encapsulated with S/N co-doped carbon can optimize the electronic structure, lower the reaction energy barrier, and improve the OER reaction activity. This work provides a novel strategy for constructing highly efficient and sustainable metal sulfide heterojunction catalysts with the assistance of lignosulfonate biomass.

Yali Yao,Jinmei He,Xuedan Zhu,Leihuan Mu,Jiehui Li,Kanshe Li,Mengnan Qu

Rationally designing cost-efficient, high-activity and durable electrocatalysts are used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is sense to solve the energy crisis and conversion. Herein, the heterostructure superwetting Co–MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 -GO/NF electrode is successfully fabricated by a typical hydrothermal reaction and it's electrocatalytic performance is also systematically studied. Thanks to the establishment of Co doped MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 heterojunction , the improvement conductivity by the addition of graphene oxide (GO), and the superhydrophilicity and superaerophobicity of microstructure, the electrode shows excellent catalytic characteristics and only need an overpotential of 123 mV for OER and 161 mV for HER to reach 10 mA cm −2 and can work steadily for 15 h in alkaline solution. Remarkebly, the superwetting heterojunction electrode demonstrated excellent overall water decomposition ability when used as bifunctional electrocatalyst in 1.0 M KOH and only 1.47 V is required to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the constructed heterogeneous interface and Co doping are conducive to optimizing the chemisorption energy of hydrogen-containing intermediates. This work provides a new way of thinking that collaborative optimization of electrode structure and surface wettability regulation to increase the active area of reaction and accelerate the bubble release toward high-performance OER and HER electrodes .

Highly efficient hydrogen evolution of Ni3S2-MoS2@CoMoO4/NF from in situ reaction of metal-organic framework in alkaline media

Yong Liu,Yekai Zhang,Mengbi Zhang,Hong Zhong,Zhanfang Cao,Liqing Li

Background Hydrogen energy, as the most promising renewable resource in the future, is severely limited in its development due to electrocatalysts, so the preparation of highly efficient and low-cost non-precious-metal catalysts is crucial for large-scale hydrogen production via electrolysis of water. Methods Herein, Ni 3 S 2− MoS 2 @CoMoO 4 /NF was successfully synthesized for the first time by in situ ion-exchange reaction and sulfidation reaction using Co-MOF/NF as a template. Significant Findings The electrochemical tests revealed that the overpotential was only 62.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which was similar to that of the noble metal Pt sheet electrode, the long-term durability of the catalysts was more than 24 h at a constant potential, which demonstrated that the catalysts possessed excellent HER performance in alkaline media. In addition, XPS, SEM, XRD, and Raman characterization also demonstrated the successful growth and loading of Ni 3 S 2 , MoS 2 , and CoMoO 4 . In this study, transition metal sulfides and transition metal sulfide complexes with good electrochemical properties were prepared using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors, providing a new idea for the preparation of HER catalysts with high activity in alkaline media.

Jiao-Jiao Duan,Zhu Han,Ru-Lan Zhang,Jiu-Ju Feng,Lu Zhang,Qian-Li Zhang,Ai-Jun Wang

Exploring high-performance and stable transition metal electrocatalysts is prerequisite for boosting overall water splitting efficiency. In this study, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) co-doped three-dimensional (3D) Ni 3 S 2 nanoflowers were in situ assembled by many inter-connected 2D nanosheets on nickel foam (NF) via hydrothermal and sulfuration treatment. By virtue of the introduced Fe and Mn elements and unique flower-like structures, the as-prepared catalyst displayed high activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), coupled with a small Tafel slope (63.29 mV dec −1 ) and a low overpotential of 216 mV to reach the current density of 30 mA cm −2 . This study would shed some lights for facile synthesis of exceptional OER catalyst by tailoring the electronic structure and doping transition metal(s).
