A series of mesoporous NiO catalysts with high specific surface area were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and modified by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the crystal structure directing regent. The characterization with SEM, XRD, BET, and H2-TPR results demonstrated that the introduction of CTAB effectively improved the dispersion, specific surface area, and pore volume and redox ability of NiO, and thus exposed more active sites. Meanwhile, the NiO catalyst with a CTAB/NiSO4·6H2O molar ratio of 2/3 exhibited the better catalytic ozonation performance of toluene, formaldehyde, methanol, and ethyl acetate than NiO. The in-situ DRIFTS elucidated the reaction path of catalytic ozonation of toluene and indicated that the introduction of CTAB facilitated the complete oxidation of by-products into CO2and H2O.Keywords:catalytic ozonation;typical VOCs;NiO catalyst;CTAB modification

A series of Cd-doped NiO catalysts were prepared and tested in the N 2 O catalytic decomposition reaction. In comparison with NiO, it was found that the Cd 0.04 Ni catalyst showed higher N 2 O decomposition activity in the temperature range of 300–450 °C with or without O 2 , and lower activation energy (77.8 kJ mol −1 ). The incorporation of Cd into the NiO lattice was verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Raman spectra. This led to the distortion of the original NiO structure and weakened the Ni-O bond. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that compared with NiO and CdO, Cd 0.04 Ni possessed higher Ni 2+ and Cd (n+1)+ contents, which might have been induced by the electron transfer behavior between CdO and NiO. A possible mechanism for active site regeneration and O 2 desorption over Cd 0.04 Ni was proposed. The Cd 0.04 Ni catalyst also exhibited good resistance to NO and O 2 .

Rationally designing a strongly coupled heterostructure with rich functional sites and high catalytic stability is essential for efficient energy conversion. This work synthesizes a self-supported NiO/RuO 2 heterostructure for hydrogen production via facile dealloying following an in-situ electrochemical oxidation method. It only requires 88 ± 1 mV to drive a current density of −100 mA/cm 2 in the alkaline electrolyte during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), outperforming NiO, RuO 2 , and Pt foil. The higher anodic potential applied to the dealloyed ribbons results in lower overpotentials and faster reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the catalytic activity and stability of the individual NiO can be significantly improved once coupled with a small amount of heterogeneous RuO 2 . The strong synergistic effect between NiO and RuO 2 contributes to exposing abundant active sites, optimizing electronic structure, facilitating charge transfer at the interface, and most importantly, maintaining structural stability. These advantages make the self-supported NiO/RuO 2 heterostructure a promising candidate for replacing the Pt-based catalysts.

The reduction of metal oxides by biochar is an important reaction for many biomass utilization technologies. This work investigated the temperature–programmed reduction (TPR) of NiO/Al2O3by in situ generated biochar from citric acid pyrolysis. Firstly, NiO/Al2O3was loaded with citric acid by impregnation and then heated from ambient temperature to 900 °C in a N2flow. The process was on–line analyzed by the TGA–FTIR technique. Secondly, a series of intermediates was obtained and characterized by XRD, CHNO elemental analysis, and temperature programmed oxidation (TPO). Lastly, a control experiment of unsupported NiO was conducted to show the influence of Al2O3support on the NiO reduction. Results showed that the whole heating process could be resolved into two parts that is citric acid pyrolysis and NiO reduction at a heating rate of 5 °C/min. The NiO reduction occurred above 400 °C with the biochar from citric acid pyrolysis as reductant. In the temperature–programmed reduction process, the Al2O3–supported NiO exhibited three reduction phases in contrast with only one reduction phase for the unsupported NiO. A hypothesis was proposed to explain this. The presence of Al2O3support may result in different deposition sites of biochar (on NiO or on Al2O3), and consequently different reduction mechanisms. Keywords:metal oxide reduction;biomass pyrolysis;solid–state reaction;biochar gasification

As an energy storage component of wearable electronics, planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) hold great advantages in terms of flexibility, miniaturization, and integration. However, the preparation process of MSCs is rather cumbersome. A simple, fast, and efficient technique for preparing MSCs is still of strong desirability. Herein, a fast and efficient laser direct writing technique is proposed to in situ fabricate NiO nanoparticles anchored on N-doped laser-induced graphene (NiO/NLIG) composite electrodes on account of the formation principle of the polyimide (PI) film, which are subsequently assembled into high-performance flexible planar MSCs. The as-assembled NiO/NLIG MSCs can achieve a remarkable areal specific capacitance of 25.11 mF cm–2, a superior energy density of 1.88 mW h cm–2 at a high power density of 0.02 mW cm–2, excellent bendability, and good cycling performance. Furthermore, due to advantages of consistency and stability of laser direct writing, the proposed high-performance planar NiO/NLIG MSCs with consistency and stability can be easily modularized and integrated to provide customized requirements and are the most promising crucial micro-power energy storage components for flexible integrated electronics.

In this work, we prepared cubic nickel oxide (NiO) nanosheets and constructed NiO with oxygen defects induced by halogen Cl ions (NiO-Vo1). Cubic nickel oxide nanosheets were used as catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxidation of chiral 2-butanol. Under artificial simulated sunlight, NiO-Vo1 exhibited good photo-electrocatalytic OER activity and catalytic stability. The high catalytic activity is mainly attributed to the activation of nickel active sites by the halide ion-induced oxygen defect and the enhancement of photoinduced electron–hole separation efficiency. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance of oxygen-deficient nickel oxide for the oxidation of chiral 2-butanol was investigated. The results show the catalytic activity of NiO-Vo1 for electrocatalytic oxidation of 2-butanol to butanone compared with NiO. Interestingly, there is no significant difference in the electrocatalytic activity of NiO for (R)-(-)-2-butanol and (S)-( +)-2-butanol oxidation. When NiO-Vo1 was used as the catalyst, the catalytic oxidation reaction rate of (R)-(-)-2-butanol alcohol was significantly higher than that of (S)-( +)-2-butanol alcohol. At 1.77 V vs RHE voltage, the (R)-(-)-2-butanol alcohol has obvious oxidation reaction while the (S)-( +)-2-butanol alcohol is almost absent, realizing the selective electrocatalytic oxidation of (R)-(-)-2-butanol alcohol. This may be attributed to the difference in the interaction strength of chiral molecules with the surface defects of NiO after applying a voltage during the catalytic process, resulting in different catalytic activities. Here, our proposed strategy through the synergistic effect of applied voltage and surface defects provides a new approach for chiral molecule synthesis and efficient chiral resolution. The halide ion-induced defect-catalyst provides a new strategy for the preparation of efficient electrocatalytic water splitting OER and alcohol-selective oxidation catalysts. Graphical Abstract

Complementary devices with double-hybrid electrodes are prepared, assembled, and studied to improve the performance of complementary devices and take advantage of the excellent performance of composite electrochromic films. WO 3 films are prepared through the seed-assisted hydrothermal method, and polyaniline (PANI) is coated on WO 3 via electrochemical deposition. The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the WO 3 /PANI composite films are better than those of WO 3 films. The improvement in the electrochromic properties of the WO 3 /PANI composite films is mainly due to PANI’s modification of the surface morphology of the WO 3 films and its excellent conductivity. Then, a complementary device with a double-hybrid electrode is assembled. The WO 3 /PANI and NiO/PB electrode films are used as the cathode and anode of the device, respectively, and KCl solution is employed as the electrolyte. The light modulation range of the complementary device is 55.71%, the coloring time is t c = 3.2 s, the bleached time is t b = 8.1 s, and the coloring efficiency is 24.63 cm 2 ·C −1 . All of these values are better than those of the single WO 3 and NiO devices. The electrode reaction process of the complementary device is synchronous and synergetic. Thus, the device exhibits good electrochromic performance.

Constructing porous structure has proved to be an effective strategy to improve the gas sensing properties of metal oxide semiconducting materials. In this work, high-performance hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas sensing material with porous structure were synthesized by growing nickel oxide (NiO) on vanadium trioxide (V2O3) seeds. Morphology and structure characterizations reveal that the novel three-dimensional (3D) nanoflowers are formed by self-assembling two-dimensional (2D) porous nanosheets with high surface area and abundant active sites. Compared with pristine NiO, the sensing performance of V2O3-NiO (VN8, VN7, VN6) with different ratios of V3+: Ni2+ is enhanced due to their porous structure. Among them, VN7 sensor shows excellent sensing properties at 200 °C. The response to 500 ppb H2S can reach 65, which increases as high as 2.2 times compared with the pristine NiO sensor. The response time to 500 ppb H2S is further decreased from 13 s of the pristine NiO sensors to 8 s of VN7 sensor. The VN7 sensor also shows a wide linear range from 20 ppb to 500 ppb, high selectivity, good repeatability, long-term stability, moisture resistance and low detection limit (20 ppb), indicating its potential candidate for ppb-level H2S detection in complex environment of industrial mine.

The rapid development of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and smart meters demands high-performance energy storage devices. By now, supercapacitors are expected to become one of the most promising energy devices for future energy technology. In this work, NiO nanoparticles supported on activated carbon nanofibers (NiO/ACNFs) have been synthesized by atomic layer deposition technique, which is directly used as self-supporting binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman results show that NiO nanoparticles (3.1 nm) are uniformly coated on ACNFs. The NiO/ACNFs-600 electrodes demonstrate a specific capacitance of 870 F·g −1 (1 A·g −1 ) and good rate capability (remain 67% at 10 A·g −1 ). The asymmetric supercapacitor devices with NiO/ACNFs-600//ACNFs electrodes yield a fairly high energy density of 39.85 Wh·kg −1 at 2000 W·kg −1 and excellent capacitance retention of 87% after 10,000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical capacitance performance for NiO/ACNFs is attributed to the high conductivity and large specific surface area of ACNFs, high capacity, small size, and even dispersion of NiO as well as the synergistic effect between them. These results demonstrate that NiO/ACNFs can serve as excellent electrode materials for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors.

The mixed conductor porous layer was prepared by introducing the electronic conductor NiO into the oxygen ion conductor YSZ for the impedimetric NO 2 sensor. By changing the ratio of YSZ/NiO in the porous layer , the morphology and electron-ion conduction properties of the mixed conductor porous layer were tuned to obtain the high-performance sensing electrode/electrolyte/gas three-phase boundary (TPB) and improve the response characteristics of the sensor. The results show that the number of pores in the porous layer decreases with increasing NiO doping, while the average pore size shows an opposite trend. The results of AC impedance and NO 2 -TPD measurement show that the introduction of NiO in the YSZ porous layer significantly improves the electrochemical activity of the sensor at TPB and the NO 2 adsorption capacity , which in turn improves the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor based on the YSZ:NiO= 1:0.5 (mass ratio) porous layer exhibits the highest Θ (Δ Θ = 19.13° for 300 ppm) and |Z| (S |Z| = 0.35 for 300 ppm) response value. The sensor also has good anti-interference ability. The changes of Δ Θ caused by CH 4 , CO 2 , H 2 , NO and NH 3 are 0.6%, 1.6%, − 2.6%, 3.3% and − 2.4%, and the Δ|Z| are 2.5%, 3.2%, − 2.7%, 5.6% and 1.2%. Meanwhile, the humidity has almost no effect on the |Z| and Θ response.

Tremendous efforts have been dedicated to developing waste dye treatment methods that are recyclable and efficient. However, challenges such as high toxicity, poor dispersion in aqueous solutions, and the high residual rate problems of some catalysts persist. Herein, inspired by the superparamagnetic properties and the electrostatic absorption capacity of Fe3O4 and the photocatalytic activity of NiO, flower-like, adsorptive-photocatalytic dual-effect dye scavengers, named Fe3O4@SiO2@NiO magnetic nanoparticles (FSN MNPs), are fabricated. The outermost NiO layer with a large specific surface area of 211.876 m2/g effectively adsorbs dyes via electrostatic interactions. More importantly, the introduction of an inert protective SiO2 layer between the Fe3O4 core and NiO shell enhances the chemical stability and catalytic performance of the FSN MNPs. These FSN MNPs are recyclable and can be reused at least six times. Their photocatalytic activity against rhodamine B (RhB) was assessed. They show a high RhB degradation efficiency of up to 99.50%. Therefore, the FSN MNPs are promising catalysts for dye degradation in industrial wastewater treatment applications.

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution is viewed as a promising strategy to address the energy and environmental issues. In this study, a series of NiO/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (NiO/ZIS 6 ) p-n heterojunction photocatalysts have been prepared by the facile ultrasonic assisted deposition method. The as-obtained samples were systematically characterized employing various testing techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the p-n photocatalysts were evaluated by photocatalytic hydrogen production and the effect of different mass ratios of NiO to ZIS 6 on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance was also explored. The results indicated that the 25% NiO/ZIS 6 sample demonstrates optimal photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with a hydrogen evoluton rate of 21.79 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 7.65 times higher than that of ZIS 6 . The mechanism exploration proves that the formation of NiO/ZIS 6 p-n heterojunction effectively promotes the separation and migration of photoinduced electrons and holes. Meanwhile, the recombination of charge carriers was restrained observably. This work may shed light on the design and preparation of novel p-n heterojunction photocatalysts with efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance and high stability.
