Synergistic Interface Engineering in Bi₂O₃-In₂O₃@CuO Nanowires for Highly Selective Electrocatalytic CO₂ Reduction to Formate

Rongtao Xiao,Ling Ma,Ya Zhang,Honggui Wang,Zhe Piao

Converting carbon dioxide and water into high-value chemicals using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power is an effective strategy to simultaneously address the depletion of fossil energy and promote low-carbon emissions and alleviate the greenhouse effect. The electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) involves a multi-proton coupled electron transfer process, including multiple steps such as CO 2 adsorption, activation and hydrogenation. Although significant progress has been made in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO 2 RR to formate, achieving formate production that combines sustained high activity, high selectivity and high stability still faces severe challenges. This study developed a high-performance electrocatalyst, Bi 2 O 3 -In 2 O 3 @CuO, which was obtained by in-situ growth of core-shell nanowire structures on Cu foams. This structure takes Cu nanowires (NWs) as the core, and the outer layer was bismuth-indium metal oxide shell. The obtained catalyst exhibited excellent performance in CO 2 RR, with a current density reaching 28.4 mA cm -2 and a Faraday efficiency of formate as high as 88.7%.

Chloride-modulated CuFe₂O₄ /Illite for enhanced H₂O₂ activation for glyphosate degradation: Unraveling the active species transformation

Jun Wan,Zhaozhe Zhan,Xinchi Wang,Tingyang Li,Yan Wu,Zhiyong Yan

The effective degradation of persistent and potentially toxic glyphosate in water remains a challenge. Herein, we report an engineering strategy of chloride-modulated synthesis to fabricate illite-modified CuFe₂O₄ composite (CuFe₂O₄/Illite) as robust heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. The optimized catalyst exhibited outstanding glyphosate removal efficiency (98.6% in 60 min), wide pH adaptability (pH 3–11), and excellent stability (87.85% efficiency after four cycles). Chloride ions were found to slightly promote degradation, whereas common anions like HCO₃ - , NO₃ - , and SO₄² - showed mild inhibition. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified •OH and O₂• - as the primary reactive oxygen species, with a minor contribution from ¹O₂ contribution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed that the facilitated Cu²⁺/Cu⁺ and Fe³ ⁺/Fe²⁺ redox cycles served as an efficient electron-transfer highway, dramatically enhancing the heterolytic cleavage of H 2 O 2 and the sustained generation of reactive species. Based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, a degradation pathway involving C-P bond cleavage and side-chain oxidation was proposed, leading to the mineralization of toxic intermediate Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) into CO₂, NH₄⁺, and PO₄³ - . This work provides a promising catalyst and elucidates the underlying mechanism for glyphosate wastewater remediation.

Ga₂O₃/Al₂O₃ fiber composite for stable electrical conduction in air at 1000 °C with pressure sensing

Bin Xu,Huabing Wang,Xianlin Wang,Youbang Ye,Jiacheng Zhang,Cailing Yang,Dekang Gao,Yang Jin,Diantang Zhang

This study develops a conductive material that remains stable in air at extremely high temperatures. Traditional conductive materials, such as carbon- or metal-based systems, often degrade or oxidize near 1000 °C, which limits their use in harsh environments. To solve this problem, we designed a composite material made of heat-resistant aluminum oxide fibers and a gallium–indium liquid metal. A needle-based method was used to distribute the liquid metal evenly through the fiber network, creating continuous conductive pathways. The material was then tested under high temperatures in air to evaluate its electrical stability and mechanical response. The results show that it maintained stable electrical performance at 1000 °C in air for three hours, with very small resistance changes. After repeated heating and cooling between room temperature and 1000 °C, the resistance remained highly stable. High-temperature treatment also reduced the material’s sensitivity to bending and pressure. Structural analysis indicates that a stable oxide layer formed during heating, while the fiber framework preserved the overall structure. These findings provide a simple and effective strategy for designing flexible conductive materials for high-temperature and harsh-environment applications.

A Study on the Weak Ferromagnetism of Nanocrystalline Stannous Oxide Induced by L-Shaped O–Sn–O Vacancies

Yadong Lian,Xiaokun Huang,Min Gu

Nanocrystalline stannous oxide (SnO) powder has been prepared by ball-milling of micrometer-SnO in a nitrogen atmosphere. A cation deficiency of 6.5% was found in the nano-SnO sample by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. After annealing at 350, 450, or 550 °C under dynamic vacuum conditions, oxygen vacancies were found in the nano-SnO samples, as verified by electron paramagnetic resonance experiments. The samples displayed weak ferromagnetism; the sample with both 6.5% Sn and at least 7.5% O vacancies showed the maximum saturation magnetization, reaching almost 1.7 × 10–3 emu/g at room temperature. The O vacancies tended to gather around Sn vacancies. An L-shaped defect model composed of one Sn and two O vacancies has been established, and its ferromagnetism has been calculated by a first-principles method. We found that the L-shaped defect induced a magnetic moment of 0.55 μB in the SnO lattice, the main contribution to which came from a spin-polarized electron in the p orbital of a corner Sn atom.

Fabrication of raspberry-like starch-based polymer microspheres for W/O and O/W emulsions separation and purification

Fan Zhang,Chao Wang,Xinyue Wang,Jiarui Wang,Hang Jiang,Kun Xu,Yungang Bai,Pixin Wang

Oil/water separation and purification is an important pursuit because of uncontrolled emissions of industrial effluent , which has a catastrophic impact on our aquatic environment and body health. Here, an amino-functionalized composite particles material was developed via Pickering polymerization and grafting of poly(ethylene imine) (PEI). The wettability of the resultant composite particles can be easily regulated via changing the dosage of PEI. At lower dosage of PEI, the composite particles exhibited underoil superhydrophobicity (UOWCA: 158.8°) which applied to separate W/O emulsions with high flux (∼ 170 L/m 2 h). At higher dosage of PEI, it converted to underwater superoleophobicity (UWOCA: 158.1°) and could efficiently realize the separation of O/W emulsions with high flux (∼ 160 L/m 2 h bar). And at specific dosage range of PEI, the resultant composite particles can separate W/O and O/W emulsions simultaneously under the joint action of rough structures, unique surface wettability and positive charge. In addition, the resultant amino-functionalized composite particles were positive charged which could effectively absorb many anionic water-soluble pollutants with high removal rate of almost 90 % during oil/water separation process. This research may provide a new idea for intelligent oil/water separation and purification in the future.

Two O-methyltransferases are responsible for multiple O-methylation steps in the biosynthesis of furanocoumarins from Angelica decursiva

Yuedong He,Jing Zhang,Yuewei He,Huhu Liu,Chong Wang,Guiping Guan,Yucheng Zhao,Yun Tian,Xiaohong Zhong,Xiangyang Lu

Angelica decursiva , an important traditional medicinal plant, possesses a unique pharmacological activity. Its principal active ingredients are coumarins, including scopoletin, bergapten, and imperatorin. However, the enzymes catalyzing the critical step of coumarins biosynthesis pathway remain unidentified. This study initially screened 14 candidate O -methyltransferases (OMTs) through transcriptomics and metabolic determination. Combined with gene expression profile and biochemical assays, two OMTs (AdOMT1 and AdOMT2) were identified to be responsible for the O -methylation of coumarins in A. decursiva. AdOMT1 showed higher catalytic efficiency for bergaptol (Kcat/Km = 3123.70), while AdOMT2 exhibited higher substrate and catalytic promiscuity, allowing it to catalyze the methylation of various coumarins, phenylpropanes, and flavonoids. Based on molecular docking and site-specific mutagenesis determined that His126/Asn132, Phe171/Phe177, Trp261/Trp267, and Asn312/Ile317 were the key catalytic residues of AdOMT1 and AdOMT2 for the O -methylation of bergaptol and xanthotoxol. Further phylogenetic analysis confirmed the reasons for the catalytic functional differentiation of AdOMT1 and AdOMT2. This study provides a basis for exploring the coumarins O -methylation mechanism and plays a critical role in diversifying the structures used in coumarins drug discovery.

Separation of vitexin-4″-O-glucoside and vitexin-2″-O-rhamnoside from hawthorn leaves extracts using macroporous resins

Hongjuan Li,Ying Liu,Haizhu Jin,Sujing Liu,Shengtao Fang,Chunhua Wang,Chuanhai Xia

Vitexin-4″- O -glucoside and vitexin-2″- O -rhamnoside are the major flavonoids of hawthorn leaves. In this work, the adsorption and desorption characteristics of vitexin-4″- O -glucoside and vitexin-2″- O -rhamnoside on seven macroporous resins were evaluated. Among the tested resins, the HPD-400 resin showed the best adsorption and desorption capacities. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for the HPD-400 resin and well fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models. Dynamic adsorption and desorption tests were performed on column packed with the HPD-400 resin to optimize the chromatographic parameters. After one run treatment with the HPD-400 resin, the contents of vitexin-4″- O -glucoside and vitexin-2″- O -rhamnoside in the product were increased 8.44-fold and 8.43-fold from 0.720% and 2.63% to 6.08% and 22.2% with recovery yields of 79.1% and 81.2%, respectively. These results show that the developed method is a promising basis for the large-scale purification of vitexin-4″- O -glucoside and vitexin-2″- O -rhamnoside from hawthorn leaves and other plant materials.

New picolinate-functionalized titanium-oxide clusters: syntheses, structures and photocatalytic H2 evolution

Chang Gao,Dexin Wang,Yanshu Liu,Guanyun Zhang,Caiyun Liu,Amir Said,Huihui Niu,Guo Wang,Chen-Ho Tung,Yifeng Wang

Two nanosized titanium-oxide clusters (TOCs), Ti12(μ2-O)14(μ3-O)4PA16 (1; PA = 2-picolinate) and Ti12(μ2-O)18PA18 (2) were synthesized by using 2-picolinic acid and Ti(OiPr)4 in one-pot reactions. Their structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Although both have the same core composition of Ti12O18, 1 exhibited superior H2 evolution activity of up to 180 μmol h−1 g−1, which is nearly eight times faster than 2. Mechanism studies revealed that 1 could induce the assembly of 2.3 nm PtNPs into 10–30 nm supra-nanoparticle structures, which contributed to the increased H2 evolution rate.

High-valence Ni and Fe sites on sulfated NiFe-LDH nanosheets to enhance O-O coupling for water oxidation

Chen Qiao,Zahid Usman,Tai Cao,Souleymen Rafai,Zhitao Wang,Youqi Zhu,Chuanbao Cao,Jiatao Zhang

High-valence Ni and Fe metal sites have demonstrated a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic performances of NiFe-LDH electrocatalysts in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although considerable OER catalytic performances achieved under high overpotential, the catalytic talent of NiFe-LDH electrocatalysts at low overpotential is rarely realized due to the absence of high-valence Ni and Fe sites. We herein report a surface engineering route to fabricate sulfated NiFe-LDH nanosheets via ion exchange strategy in sulfate-rich media. XPS results reveal a modified surface electronic structure with high-valence Ni and Fe after ion exchange reaction. Computational PDOS results suggest that computed d-band centers (ε d ) of Fe and Ni for sulfated NiFe-LDH show a significant downward shift resulting an increased valence of metal cation with orbital volume shrinkage. The high-valence Fe can facilitate a optimized multi-electron process of Ni center from [Ni II -OH] − /[Ni III -OH] − to Ni IV -OOH rather than Ni II /Ni III to Ni IV at low overpotential. The high-valence Ni can serve as the highly active center for O-O coupling during OER process. Combined with the synergetic action of high-valence Fe and Ni, the sulfated NiFe-LDH nanosheets exhibit much larger reaction kinetics and outstanding electrocatalytic activity on glassy carbon electrode (η 10  = 219 mV, η 50  = 288 mV) with a remarkable long-term stability.

Accessing metastable rocksalt phases in ferrimagnetic (CrMnFeCoNi)O and (CrMnFeCoZn)O high-entropy oxides through a mechanical alloying pathway

Zongqi Xiao,Xingyu Zhou,Yahan Zhang,Haozhou Zeng,Xueliang Jiang,Wensheng Ma,Yan Wang

Phase evolution, microstructure, and properties of mechanically alloyed (CrMnFeCoNi)O (Ni-HEO) and (CrMnFeCoZn)O (Zn-HEO) high-entropy oxide (HEO) powders are systematically investigated. Combined X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy demonstrates that both systems form a predominant face-centered cubic (FCC) phase with minor spinel and amorphous phases after 100 h of milling. Nevertheless, their formation mechanisms differ fundamentally. Ni-HEO develops by solid solution into a rocksalt structure based on the NiO matrix. While, Zn-HEO undergoes a complete reconstruction from wurtzite ZnO to a novel rocksalt FCC phase. Zn-HEO exhibits lattice contraction, unlike the lattice expansion in Ni-HEO, reflecting the rocksalt structure's cation accommodation capability. Microstructural characterization confirms that both HEO powders exhibit agglomerated, spherical-like particles with a bimodal size distribution. Chemically, Ni-HEO possesses abundant oxygen vacancies and a pronounced reduction of high-valence metal cations to their +2 oxidation state. In contrast, Zn-HEO displays a nearly defect-free structure, and negative chemical shifts. These distinctions directly govern functional properties. Ni-HEO exhibits higher saturation magnetization (∼6.0 emu/g) and lower coercivity (∼98 Oe), while Zn-HEO shows lower room-temperature resistivity (0.896 MΩ cm). The zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization curves indicate the presence of ferromagnetic interactions in both HEOs, resembling those of spinel-structured rather than rocksalt-structured HEOs. Both HEOs exhibit a typical negative temperature coefficient of resistance with similar activation energies, despite demonstrating distinctly different conduction mechanisms. The successful synthesis of these two distinct HEOs via mechanical alloying underscores the critical role of the principal oxide components in tailoring phase evolution and final material characteristics.

One-Pot O-Glycan Release and Permethylation (OPORP) Enables Rapid and Quantitative O-Glycan Analysis from Low-Input Samples

Shuhong Guo,Nafisa Tursumamat,Shengyang Liu,Qiannan Liu,Zhenyu Wang,Huili Lu,Ying Han,Piliang Hao,Jianwei Zhu,Juan Wei

O-glycosylation, an exceptionally complex and heterogeneous post-translational modification, plays pivotal roles in diverse biological and pathological processes, and is a key regulator of biopharmaceutical quality and efficacy. However, the vast structural diversity and the absence of a universal O-glycosidase make simple and reproducible O-glycan analysis a long-standing challenge, especially for low-input samples. Current O-glycan preparation workflows typically require microgram-level starting protein material and involve laborious derivatization and purification steps. Moreover, many O-glycan release methods are prone to “peeling” reactions, leading to glycan degradation and compromised quantitative accuracy. Here, we present a highly efficient One-Pot strategy for simultaneous O-glycan Release and Permethylation, termed OPORP, yielding derivatized glycans compatible with both matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) and widely available reversed-phase liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (RPLC-MS). Integrated MALDI-MS, OPORP enables comprehensive O-glycan profiling from nanogram-level protein samples within 2 h. Notably, major O-glycans could be detected from as low as 1 ng of fetuin input and as few as 1,000 MCF-7 cells using RPLC-MS. The method also provides low inter- and intra-assay variability (CV < 20%) and good quantitative linearity for low-input samples (R2 ≥ 0.95). With robust quantitative performance, we reveal markedly distinct O-glycan profiles between darbepoetin alfa and a higher-potency novel analog with accuracy. Overall, the simple yet powerful OPORP strategy combines exceptional sensitivity, throughput, and robust quantification, establishing a new methodological benchmark for O-glycan analysis with broad applications.

Synthesis and Properties of Site-Specific Acetylated Anthocyanins: Focusing on Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and Malvidin-3-O-glucoside

Jun Hu,Chujie Liang,Jinchao Xiao,Mu Chen,Kuanchen Huang,Yue Li,Shulin Deng,Xusheng Li,Jianxia Sun,Weibin Bai

Anthocyanins are widely used water-soluble pigments with various activities, which are attributed to their flavylium salt and polyhydroxy structure. However, this also leads to low lipid solubility and stability. Acylation modification has always been an attempt by researchers to improve it. In this study, two site-specific acylated anthocyanins, cyanidin-3-O-(2″-acetyl)-glucoside (C3AG) and malvidin-3-O-(2″-acetyl)-glucoside (M3AG), were prepared by optimizing the removal conditions of the protecting group through the general anthocyanin total synthesis route established in the early stage. The accurate positioning of the acylation is determined by MS/MS and 2D NMR. By comparing the oil–water partition coefficient, antioxidant activity, color, and thermal stability of the two acylated anthocyanins, it was found that the 2″ acylated anthocyanin achieved better lipid solubility and stability, but the antioxidant activity showed variability. These results together prove that these acylated anthocyanins have been optimized in application scenarios with little impact on the original activity. Therefore, this work not only provides a reference method for the acylation modification of anthocyanins but also promotes their application in the food and cosmetics industries.
