Hydroxylated carbon quantum dots (OH-CQDs) modified g-C 3 N 4 hollow microspheres were prepared using a supramolecular precursor self-assembly method. The incorporation of OH-CQDs into the precursor resulted in the formation of a hollow flower-like microsphere structure composed of g-C 3 N 4 nanoflakes in the final samples, which exhibited a morphology that was roughly inherited from that of the supramolecular precursor. The incorporation of an optimal quantity of OH-CQDs did not result in a deterioration of the g-C 3 N 4 product morphology; rather, it led to an enhancement in its microsphere structure. The modified nanostructure of g-C 3 N 4 resulted in a significant increase in reaction sites and promoted the adsorption of organic dye molecules on the surface of the g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst during degradation reactions. Furthermore, despite the reduction in carrier concentration of g-C 3 N 4 resulting from the decoration with OH-CQDs, the impedance was significantly diminished and the photocurrent density was also markedly improved. It can thus be concluded that the decoration of OH-CQDs has significantly enhanced the mobility of g-C 3 N 4 , thereby contributing to the improvement of the photocatalytic performance of the g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst.

Deep hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene resin (DCPD resin) plays an important role in enhancing its performance and broadening its applications. However, designing suitable catalysts for promoting DCPD resin deep hydrogenation remains a challenge due to the high steric hindrance and abundant unsaturated bonds in DCPD resin, requiring strong binding to C=C double bonds. We herein propose a strategy for simultaneously constructing highly-dispersed Ni particles for hydrogen dissociation and interfacial Ni 0 /Ni(OH) + sites for C=C adsorption by controlled reduction of Ni phyllosilicate (Ni PS). The catalyst, after reduction at 400 °C, demonstrated balanced ratio between Ni 0 and interfacial Ni 0 /Ni(OH) + sites, and achieved a hydrogenation degree of 99.8% (TOF: 68.8 h −1 ) while maintaining 99.3% efficiency after seven consecutive cycles. Through in-situ DRIFTS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is confirmed that the introduction of Ni 0 /Ni(OH) + interfacial sites results in superior activity compared to pure Ni 0 or unreduced PS due to optimized charge transfer and electronic configuration. This work not only establishes a simple and environmentally-friendly approach to design efficient catalysts for polymer hydrogenation, but also provides insights into the mechanism of unsaturated bond hydrogenation through the synergistic effects of Ni 0 and Ni 0 /Ni(OH) + interfacial sites.

The coupled adsorption–photocatalytic oxidation process provides a great potential scenario to enhance the removal efficiency of arsenite contaminants by converting As(III) to As(V) and simultaneous adsorption. In this study, the boron-doped black TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposite is synthesized by combination of sol–gel and in situ decomposition-thermal polymerization methods as a photocatalyst for the photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption of As(III). Under dark conditions, the boron-doped samples (B-TiO2 and B-TiO2/g-C3N4) display an increase in the As(III) adsorption capacity by one order of magnitude up to circa 3.2 mg g–1 with an initial As(III) concentration of 2 mg L–1 at 298.15 K and pH 5. The adsorption kinetics of As(III) on B-TiO2/g-C3N4 conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, revealing the chemical adsorption mechanism. Under visible light irradiation, the total arsenic removal capacity is substantially improved by 20% with a removal capacity of 3.9 mg g–1. The enhancement of arsenic adsorption is attributed to the chemical complexation and hydrogen bond, in which B–OH bonds play a dominant role. The photocatalytic oxidation mechanism of the as-synthesized B-TiO2/g-C3N4 is attributed to the synergism of superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and photogenerated holes.

Battery-type electrode materials such as Ni(OH)2 applied in Faraday supercapacitors could present a low cycling stability due to the microstructure damage of materials, originating from their cyclic volume swelling and shrinking. It is well established that the structural stability of materials is crucial for their cycling stability. However, the lack of knowledge about the structural relevance of materials to their cycling stability somehow results in a chaotic understanding on the material design. In this study, we try to reveal the structural relevance by comparing an orderly built nanostructure with a randomly packed nanostructure using Ni(OH)2 as the target material. It is found that the branched nanosheet-interlaced nanostructure of Ni(OH)2 has its self-supportive function in favor of its structural stability, thus promoting its cycling stability. Also, the orderly nanostructured Ni(OH)2 presents high electrochemical performance due to the reduced interfacial charge-transfer resistance and Warburg resistance.

Summary In this study, we synthesized a bimetal hydroxyl fluoride, Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 (OH)F, with an overlapping nanoneedle structure using a simple hydrothermal method. The synthesized Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 (OH)F was used as a new electrode material to study its electrochemical performance. Because of the synergy between Co and Zn and the high ionicity of fluorides, the Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 (OH)F electrode exhibited a discharge capacity of 1355.5 mAh g −1 during the first charging and discharging cycle. After 400 cycles at a current density of 2 A g −1 , the Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 (OH)F electrode showed an excellent specific capacity of 756 mAh g −1 . The Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 (OH)F electrode also exhibited an excellent capacitance contribution rate, indicating good rate performance. In addition, the hydroxyl and oxygen vacancies in the electrode material promoted the lithium/dilithium reactions. Therefore, Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 (OH)F is an excellent lithium storage material with high rate; thus, it has a certain potential application value in the future.

The industrial synthesis of ethylene glycol (EG) via ethylene oxide hydration is energy-intensive and environmentally harmful due to high greenhouse gas emissions. Although electrochemical oxidation presents a more sustainable route for the direct synthesis of EG from ethylene, existing technologies are hampered by limited catalytic performance stemming from inadequate regulation of the key intermediate, adsorbed hydroxyl radicals (*OH). Herein, we employ a structural engineering strategy to fabricate a PdPtRh trimetallic alloy catalyst by introducing highly electronegative platinum (Pt) and rhodium (Rh) into a palladium (Pd) matrix. By precisely tuning the catalyst’s electronic structure, we effectively optimize the adsorption strength of *OH. Benefiting from this alloying effect, the developed PdPtRh catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance in the ethylene-to-EG conversion, achieving a peak Faradaic efficiency of 52 % and a production rate of 7.61 μmol/cm 2 /h-markedly superior to conventional monometallic Pd catalysts. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the alloy structure facilitates charge redistribution among the metals, effectively lowering key energy barriers in the reaction process. This work not only offers a novel design paradigm for developing efficient, eco-friendly catalysts for EG electrosynthesis but also highlights the immense potential of harnessing multimetallic synergistic effects to optimize performance in the field of electrocatalysis.

To address the challenge of insufficient long-term protective performance in waterborne epoxy coatings (WEP) due to curing defects, this study successfully synthesized a ternary nanocomposite filler, BTA@OH-BN/PANI (BTP), through a chemical oxidation polymerization process. Hydroxylated hexagonal boron nitride (OH-BN) was employed as a functional scaffold, onto which the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) was loaded via a solution impregnation method. Camphorsulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (CSA-PANI) was then coated onto the surface using in situ polymerization. FT-IR, XPS, and FE-SEM characterization confirmed strong interfacial coupling between the components and the successful formation of the core-shell structure. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the BTP filler significantly improves coating performance through a multidimensional synergistic effect, including physical shielding, active repair, and interfacial passivation. At the scratch defect site, due to the responsive release of BTA and the passivation induced by PANI, the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) increased from an initial value of 13,200 Ω·cm 2 to 25,600 Ω·cm 2 within 24 h, demonstrating significant active impedance recovery. After a 90-day immersion in a 3.5% NaCl solution, the BTP-WEP substrate retained its bright metallic lustre. This study provides a solid theoretical and experimental foundation for the development of high-performance, synergistic active, and environmentally friendly marine anti-corrosion coatings.

Recovering valuable organic compounds from high-salinity organic wastewater is essential for sustainable chemical manufacturing. However, conventional polymeric membranes suffer from insufficient organic/inorganic selectivity, poor solvent resistance, and severe membrane fouling during practical applications. Herein, we developed a hydroxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-OH)-modulated graphene oxide (GO) membrane to address these challenges. By precisely regulating the inner diameter and hydroxyl content of CNT-OH, rapid transport channels for water molecules and hydrated ions were constructed, which simultaneously suppressed interlayer swelling and enhanced the rejection of organic compounds. The optimized GO/single-walled hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (SWCNT-OH) membrane achieved water permeability of 28.7 l m −2 h −1 bar −1 and separation factor above 15 for negatively charged dyes, antibiotics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) relative to inorganic salts (NaCl), outperforming commercial nanofiltration (NF) membranes by one order of magnitude. During one-month continuous treatment of real erythromycin (ERY) fermentation broth, the membrane showed only a 7.1% flux decline and maintained 99.9% ERY rejection. Compared with conventional ultrafiltration-nanofiltration (UF-NF) processes, the system reduced operating costs by 66.4% and CO 2 emissions by 76.8%, demonstrating pronounced economic and environmental advantages. Overall, the system demonstrates outstanding application potential, strong scalability and engineering feasibility.

Birefringent crystals, as core materials for polarization modulation, hold significant importance for the advancement of laser polarizing technology, high-precision instruments, and other optical communication fields today. However, balancing the deep ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edge and birefringence remains a demanding challenge. Borophosphates have emerged as a promising research direction for optoelectronic functional materials, but the small birefringence of most borophosphates limits their applications. Here, a novel mixed-coordinated hydroxyborophosphate, NH4B3PO6(OH)3, has been successfully designed and obtained. This compound belongs to the triclinic space group P1 (No. 2), exhibiting pronounced birefringence (the experimental refractive index difference value is 0.057 at 546 nm) and a short DUV cutoff edge below 200 nm. These properties indicate that NH4B3PO6(OH)3 exhibits excellent potential as a DUV birefringent material.

Decoupled water splitting offers a safe and efficient route for hydrogen production. However, its practical application remains constrained by issues such as low electrode discharge capacity and poor structural stability. In this study, framework-integrated Ni(OH)2 anodes for membrane-free decoupled water splitting are fabricated. The framework-integrated electrode structure with a carboxymethyl cellulose-based binder affords a well-developed conductive network and robust interfacial contact. This architecture delivers higher discharge capacity and enhanced cycling stability relative to conventional coated electrodes. In addition, the use of nickel powder as the conductive additive improves electronic conductivity, resulting in higher discharge capacity and excellent hydrogen-production performance. The framework-integrated Ni(OH)2 anode maintains a stable structure and electrochemical performance over 100 decoupled cycles, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of 97.3%. The electrical energy consumption for hydrogen production is 3.40 kWh m-3 H2 at 50 mA cm-2.

S-modified MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 hollow nanosheets were constructed for enhanced UOR. • Requires 1.30 V at 10 mA cm −2 and remains stable for 48 h. • MnO 2 phase transformation promotes the generation of Ni 3+ active species. • S-modification enhances urea adsorption while suppressing competitive OH − adsorption. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) provides an alternative anodic process for electrochemical hydrogen generation, but developing catalysts with high activity and sustained performance remains challenging. In this study, we report an S-modified nickel-based catalyst with a hollow nanosheet architecture (α/γ-MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -S), demonstrating enhanced UOR performance in alkaline media. α/γ-MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -S attains a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a potential of 1.30 V and maintains reliable durability for 48 h without significant degradation. The improved activity and durability are associated with the hollow nanosheet structure, the phase transformation of MnO 2 , and S-modification, which facilitate mass transport and charge transfer, modulate the electronic structure of Ni(OH) 2 to promote the formation of Ni 3+ active species, and enhance the electrochemical response to urea at different concentrations. This research establishes a practical avenue for constructing advanced nickel-based UOR catalysts through rational structural optimization, phase regulation, and surface modification.
