SWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites-modified microelectrode arrays for revealing locking relations between burst and local field potential in cultured cortical networks

Yaoyao Liu,Shihong Xu,Yu Deng,Jinping Luo,Kui Zhang,Yan Yang,Longze Sha,Ruilin Hu,Zhaojie Xu,Erwei Yin,Qi Xu,Yirong Wu,Xinxia Cai

Burst and local field potential (LFP) are fundamental components of brain activity, representing fast and slow rhythms, respectively. Understanding the intricate relationship between burst and LFP is crucial for deciphering the underlying mechanisms of brain dynamics. In this study, we fabricated high-performance microelectrode arrays (MEAs) using the SWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites, which exhibited favorable electrical properties (low impedance: 12.8 ± 2.44 kΩ) and minimal phase delay (−11.96 ± 1.64°). These MEAs enabled precise exploration of the burst-LFP interaction in cultured cortical networks. After a 14-day period of culture, we used the MEAs to monitor electrophysiological activities and revealed a time-locking relationship between burst and LFP, indicating the maturation of the neural network. To further investigate this relationship, we modulated burst firing patterns by treating the neural culture with increasing concentrations of glycine. The results indicated that glycine effectively altered burst firing patterns, with both duration and spike count increasing as the concentration rose. This was accompanied by an enhanced level of time-locking between burst and LFP but a decrease in synchrony among neurons. This study not only highlighted the pivotal role of SWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS-modified MEAs in elucidating the interaction between burst and LFP, bridging the gap between slow and fast brain rhythms in vitro but also provides valuable insights into the potential therapeutic strategies targeting neurological disorders associated with abnormal rhythm generation.

Comparing build architecture and electrolyte of ITO-free flexible patterned organic screen-printed ECDs based on a novel PEDOT:PSS compound film post-treated with strong and weak organic acids

Guodong Liu,Yu Liu,Meiyun Zhang,Zhenhua Yang,Patrick Gane

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), a common constituent material used in the preparation of electrochromic devices (ECDs) when doped with the polymer anion poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS), can also be used to form an electrode layer. Patterned ECDs may thus be fabricated by conventional spin-coating. Due to high wastage and low productivity in spin coating , the demand for low-cost ECDs is difficult to meet. The alternative use of screen printing, however, results in a major challenge due to difficulty in achieving the necessary continuity of the applied print and of the subsequent film forming uniformity when using standard PEDOT:PSS dispersion alone. The film forming property of PEDOT:PSS is shown here to be improved by dispersing in a water methanol mix to form a novel PEDOT:PSS-solvent compound, which, when combined together with the high boiling solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and a thickening binder solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), allows screen printing to perform well. The sheet conductivity of the printed PEDOT:PSS compound film is then further increased by studying post-treatment using strong and weak organic acids , illustrated by comparing p-toluenesulfonic acid (tosylic acid (PTSA)) with glacial acetic acid (CH 3 COOH (HOAc)) or oxalic acid (OA), respectively, over a range of concentration. In this way, the optimal processing concentration of acid is accordingly obtained to minimize sheet resistance. Screen printed patterned ECDs, based on the post-treated PEDOT:PSS compound electrochromic and electrode films using the optimal acid concentrations, were printed including electrolyte layers, were evaluated. Performance of lateral versus vertical ECD build architecture in respect to chromatic aberration, working voltage, time response, ion mobility in electrolyte type (gel/solution), absorbance at color-switching, as well as mechanical stability during repeated bending, was assessed. The optima of chromatic aberration and absorbance at color-switching were found to coincide with minimal sheet resistance of the novel PEDOT:PSS compound films. Almost equivalent sheet resistance was obtained with both PTSA and HOAc, each at optimal treatment dosage, showing newly that the weak organic acid post-treatment provides an equivalent effect in comparison with strong organic acid if used at sufficient concentration. Furthermore, the electrochromic performance of the experimentally prepared ECDs was shown to be close to the level obtained from conventional indium-tin oxide (ITO)-based ECDs, and retained stable performance for color-switching after repeated bending of 1 000 times.

Ma Shanshan,Liu Siqi,Yan Jifeng,Ren Bin,Yu Hang,Ma Zhaoyang,Sun Lina,Zhang Tengyang,Huo Jinpeng,Yang Yuhui,Fei Jie,Chae Sanghoon,He Chaobin,Li Hejun

The development of a multifunctional conductive film to meet the requirements of flexibility, high-strength and exceptional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capacity in the electronic devices has attracted extensive attention. A strategy of hydrogel-induced ultra-fast protonation was proposed for preparing aramid nanofibers-transition metal carbonitrides-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS) conductive films. The ultra-fast protonation process would induce the formation of ultra-long molecular chains and the reconstruction of cross-linking networks to enhance the mechanical properties of films. The ultimate tensile strength of ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS (60%) film reached 233.6 MPa, showing an increase of 189.5%. Meanwhile, the encapsulation of conductive PEDOT:PSS layer effectively addressed the issues of the brittleness and highly oxidization susceptibility of MXene. The EMI shielding effectiveness of ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS (60%) film reached 45.7–48.2 dB from 8.2 to 26.7 GHz at a thickness of 36 μm. After a month for exposing to air, the EMI shielding capability of ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS (60%) film still remained stable (> 42.5 dB). This hybrid film also exhibited high conductivity (264.7 S·cm −1 ), self-cleaning, fire retardancy and joule heating properties, which was as an intelligent sensor to realize the real-time monitoring of human physiological signals. This work paves the way for large-scale production of next-generation high-performance EMI shielding films, demonstrating huge potential in electromagnetic protection, thermal management and intelligent wearable devices. PtNPs/PEDOT:PSS-Modified Microelectrode Arrays Reveal Electrophysiological Activities of Different Neurons in Medial Amygdala of Mice Under Innate Fear

Fan Penghui,Song Yilin,Lu Botao,Wang Yiding,Dai Yuchuan,Xie Jingyu,He Enhui,Xu Zhaojie,Yang Gucheng,Mo Fan,Liu Juntao,Wang Mixia,Cai Xinxia

The medial amygdala (MA) plays an important role in the innate fear circuit. However, the electrophysiological mechanism of MA for processing innate fear needs to be further explored. In this study, we fabricated microelectrode arrays (MEAs) with detecting sites arranged to match the location and shape of MA in mice and detected the electrophysiology in freely behaving mice under 2-methyl-2-thiazoline (2MT)-induced fear. The detection performance of MEA is improved by modifying metal nanoparticles and conductive polymers (PtNPs/PEDOT:PSS). After modification, the impedance magnitude and phase of electrodes were decreased to 27.0 ± 2.3 kΩ and −12.30 ± 0.52°, respectively, leading to a signal-to-noise ratio of 10. Its electrochemical stability and mechanical stability were also verified by cyclic voltammetry (CV) sweeping and ultrasonic vibration. MEAs were then implanted into the MA of mice, and the electrophysiology and behavioral characteristics were synchronously recorded and analyzed. The results showed that 2MT induced strong defensive behaviors in mice, accompanied by increases in the average spike firing rate and local field potential (LFP) power of MA neurons. According to principles commonly applied to cortical extracellular recordings, the recorded neurons are divided into two classes based on waveforms. Statistics showed that about 37% of type 1 neurons (putative GABAergic neurons) and 87% of type 2 neurons (putative glutamatergic neurons) were significantly activated under innate fear. At the same time, the firing rate of some activated neurons had a good linear correlation with the freezing rate.

PtNPt/MWCNT-PEDOT:PSS-Modified Microelectrode Arrays for the Synchronous Dopamine and Neural Spike Detection in Rat Models of Sleep Deprivation

Zeying Lu,Shengwei Xu,Hao Wang,Enhui He,Juntao Liu,Yuchuan Dai,Jingyu Xie,Yilin Song,Yun Wang,Yiding Wang,Lina Qu,Xinxia Cai

In this study, a biosensor assembly based on microelectrode arrays (MEAs) modified with PtNPt/MWCNT-PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites is presented to synchronously detect the dopamine (DA) and electrophysiological activities in rat brains. Different morphological and electrochemical characterizations were conducted to show the excellent mechanical and electrical properties of the as-prepared probes. The developed biosensors realized the sensitive and selective detection of DA with the existence of significant interferences such as uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AA), glutamate (Glu), and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC). Calibration curve for the DA response was linear with the concentration from 0.05 μM to 79 μM (R = 0.999), with a sensitivity of 30.561 pA/μM and detection limit as low as 50 nM. Finally, the proposed microelectrode was applied to be implanted into the cortex and caudate putamen (CPU) of rats, which was demonstrated to stably measure the synchronous neurochemical and neurophysiological changes caused by 72 h sleep deprivation. The in vivo measuring results showed that the sleep deprivation increased the DA release and neural spike activity in both cortex and CPU. The local field potential (LFP) power in the delta and theta band was significantly increased as well. These changes in brain may reflect the brain’s adaptive reaction toward the side effects induced by sleep deprivation and may partially explain the mechanism of forced wakefulness in the presence of accumulated sleep pressure.

A conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS hydrogel based wearable sensor for accurate uric acid detection in human sweat

Zhenying Xu,Jingyao Song,Bingrui Liu,Shaoping Lv,Fengxian Gao,Xiliang Luo,Peipei Wang

Noninvasive wearable sensors present key information about targeting epidermally retrievable biofluids in human health monitoring. Tracking circulating uric acid (UA) in human sweat performs a simple and prompt way for reducing risk of gout and hyperuricemia. Herein, we propose a wearable microfluidic-based electrochemical sensor via incorporating conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS hydrogel towards accurate and sensitive detection of UA in sweat. The microfluidic device validly realizes the capture for sweat in real-time, and the conducting PEDOT:PSS hydrogel with large surface area plays multiple roles in this wearable sensor for UA detecting, electrolyte storing, and flexibility enhancing. The prepared flexible sensor shows an ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.875 µA µM −1 cm −2 and a low limit of detection (LOD) down to 1.2 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, it can detect UA levels in real human sweat samples collected from volunteers before and after purine-rich diets, and the results are highly correlated with those measured by the standard enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). This PEDOT:PSS hydrogel based flexible sensor, together with the sweat-collecting microfluidic device, is believed to be promising for the construction of high performance wearable sensors to monitor biomarkers, metabolites and nutrients.

Utilizing GO/PEDOT:PSS/PtNPs-enhanced high-stability microelectrode arrays for investigating epilepsy-induced striatal electrophysiology alterations

Han Meiqi,Wang Yu,Jing Luyi,Yang Gucheng,Liu Yaoyao,Mo Fan,Xu Zhaojie,Luo Jinping,Jia Qianli,Zhu Yuxin,Cao Hanwen,Cai Xinxia,Liu Juntao

The striatum plays a crucial role in studying epilepsy, as it is involved in seizure generation and modulation of brain activity. To explore the complex interplay between the striatum and epilepsy, we engineered advanced microelectrode arrays (MEAs) specifically designed for precise monitoring of striatal electrophysiological activities in rats. These observations were made during and following seizure induction, particularly three and 7 days post-initial modeling. The modification of graphene oxide (GO)/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/platinu-m nanoparticles (PtNPs) demonstrated a marked reduction in impedance (10.5 ± 1.1 kΩ), and maintained exceptional stability, with impedance levels remaining consistently low (23 kΩ) even 14 days post-implantation. As seizure intensity escalated, we observed a corresponding increase in neuronal firing rates and local field potential power, with a notable shift towards higher frequency peaks and augmented inter-channel correlation. Significantly, during the grand mal seizures, theta and alpha bands became the dominant frequencies in the local field potential. Compared to the normal group, the spike firing rates on day 3 and 7 post-modeling were significantly higher, accompanied by a decreased firing interval. Power in both delta and theta bands exhibited an increasing trend, correlating with the duration of epilepsy. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamic processes of striatal neural activity during the initial and latent phases of temporal lobe epilepsy and contribute to our understanding of the neural mechanisms underpinning epilepsy.

Hydrophobic association-improved multi-functional hydrogels with liquid metal droplets stabilized by xanthan gum and PEDOT:PSS for strain sensors

Qishu Lu,Wenxia Liu,Duo Chen,Dehai Yu,Zhaoping Song,Huili Wang,Guodong Li,Xiaona Liu,Shaohua Ge

The synthesis of liquid metal-infused hydrogels, typically constituted by polyacrylamide networks crosslinked through covalent bonds , often encounters a conundrum: they exhibit restricted extensibility and a diminished capacity for self-repair, owing to the inherently irreversible nature of the covalent linkages. This study introduces a hydrophobically associated hydrogel embedding gallium (Ga)-droplets, realized through the in situ free radical copolymerization of hydrophobic hexadecyl methacrylate (HMA) and hydrophilic acrylamide (AM) in a milieu containing xanthan gum (XG) and PEDOT:PSS, which co-stabilizes the Ga-droplets. The Ga-droplets, synergistically functioning as conductive agents alongside PEDOT:PSS, also expedite the hydrogel's formation. The resultant XG/PEDOT:PSS-Ga-P(AM-HMA) hydrogel is distinguished by its remarkable extensibility (2950 %), exceptional toughness (3.28 MJ/m 3 ), superior adherence to hydrophobic, smooth substrates, and an innate ability for hydrophobic-driven self-healing. As a strain sensing medium, this hydrogel-based sensor exhibits heightened sensitivity (gauge factor = 12.66), low detection threshold (0.1 %), and robust durability (>500 cycles). Furthermore, the inclusion of glycerol endows the XG/PEDOT:PSS-Ga-P(AM-HMA) hydrogel with anti-freezing properties without compromising its mechanical integrity and sensing acumen. This sensor adeptly captures a spectrum of human movements, from the nuanced radial pulse to extensive joint articulations. This research heralds a novel approach for fabricating multifaceted PAM-based hydrogels with toughness and superior sensing capabilities.

Negative space charge modulated ion transport through PEDOT:PSS hydrogels integrating nanofluidic channels for highly efficient osmotic energy harvesting

Rui Zhu,Peng Sun,Guofeng Cui,Yaoguang Yu,Shaojun Ke,Jie Zhao

The exploitation of ion-selective membranes with high power density and low resistance is crucial for harvesting osmotic energy in natural environments. However, the exploration of membranes that synergistically satisfy the demands of these properties in osmotic energy conversion remains largely unresolved. Herein, we demonstrate the application of a negative surface-modified 3D porous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogel for osmotic membranes, which effectively improved their deficiencies. Experiments, validation and simulations confirmed that the hydrogel membranes have remarkable space charge-modulated ion transport properties. Consequently, an impressive power output of 6.26 W m−2 can be realized, which exceeds the prevailing commercial standard (5 W m−2). Meanwhile, five device units were connected in series to charge a supercapacitor which exhibited an impressive selectivity rate of 95.6%, coupled with an electrochemical energy conversion efficiency of approximately 45.8%. This research paves a new avenue towards the application of hydrogels in ultra-high performance osmotic membranes.

A reusable, healable, and biocompatible PEDOT:PSS hydrogel-based electrical bioadhesive interface for high-resolution electromyography monitoring and time–frequency analysis

Rongtai Wan,Jiawen Yu,Ziyi Quan,Hude Ma,Jinhao Li,Fajuan Tian,Wen Wang,Yajuan Sun,Junyan Liu,Dian Gao,Jingkun Xu,Baoyang Lu

As the most ideal interface between bioelectronic devices and biological tissues, the electrical bioadhesive interface (EBI) holds significant potential for various applications, including soft bioelectronics, wearable devices, and electrophysiological signal monitoring. However, most current EBIs are disposable products that lack repeatable adhesion and self-healing properties, thus hindering practical applications. Herein, we develop a reusable EBI by incorporating a dynamic non-covalent interaction enhancer polydopamine (PDA) and conductive PEDOT:PSS into an adhesive hydrogel matrix polyacrylamide (PAM). The EBI exhibits intriguing overall electrical and mechanical properties, including high conductivity (5.57 S m −1 ), tissue-like Young’s modulus (2.7 kPa), low interfacial impedance (1 kΩ), and excellent adhesion strength (46.45 ± 1.75 kPa on porcine skin) with excellent retention (87 %) after 200 adhering/detaching cycles, high self-healing efficiency of 94.11 %, and outstanding biocompatibility in HDF-a and HaCaT cell models. Benefiting from these superior properties, we further demonstrate the fabrication and application of an EBI-based reusable electromyography monitoring patch (EMP). The reusable EMP enables high-resolution electromyography signal monitoring capability with a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30.05 dB than commercial electrodes (12.06 dB). Remarkably, such reusable EMP maintains very stable SNR of 21.82 dB after 200 adhering/detaching cycles (3.8 times higher than commercial electrodes, 5.74 dB after 30 cycles), and showcases typical time and frequency-domain characteristics. These findings demonstrate a promising reusable EMP to enhance the accuracy and convenience of electromyography monitoring.

Enhanced Photovoltaic Performance in Silicon/PEDOT:PSS Hybrid Solar Cells via Hydrogen Pretreatment of PEDOT:PSS

Juan Wang,Yankun Shen,Qianwen Wei,Guangsheng Liu,Zheng Zhou,Jingjing Luo,Guijun Zhang,SiSi Pang,Guotian Liu,Wangbao Li,Yu Yang

Silicon/PEDOT:PSS hybrid solar cells have attracted attention due to their simple fabrication process. While liquid-phase treatments are widely employed to optimize the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS, gas-phase pretreatment strategies remain largely underexplored. Herein, we introduce a gas-phase hydrogen pretreatment strategy that effectively screens the negative charges on sulfonate groups, thereby attenuating the Coulombic interactions between PEDOT+ and PSS− chains and enhancing film conductivity. Following a 24-h hydrogen pretreatment, the fill factor (FF) increases from 61 to 65.8%, resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement from 12.15% to 13.61%. Further synergy with epoxy resin optimization elevates the PCE to 14.36% and significantly bolsters environmental stability: the devices retain 60% and 70% of their initial PCE after 200 h of storage at 80 °C and −12 °C, respectively. These results show that hydrogen pretreatment of PEDOT:PSS is a successful and feasible approach for Si/PEDOT:PSS hybrid solar cells, contributing to the development of solar cell technology.
