Solvent-regulated 3D PEI-PVBC polymer structuring on CF for enhanced interfacial performance of CFRPs

Yinchuan Pu,JingHao Zhong,Xiang Cai,Kangle Xue,Li Liu

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs), known for their excellent high specific strength, have become crucial materials in the development of modern high-performance industries. In this study, a mild and simple self-assembly strategy was implemented using polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC) to construct a novel three-dimensional polymer macrostructure on carbon fibers (CFs). Such a configuration was achieved through a binary solvent system, comprising a good solvent and a poor solvent, which controlled the deposition morphology of PVBC chains. The interfacial strength and toughness of CFRPs were significantly improved without compromising fiber strength. Compared to composites reinforced with the pristine CF or those modified with traditional thin polymer coatings (CF-P-PVBC), the three-dimensional microstructured CF-P-PVBC-W composites exhibited significant improvements in interfacial shear strength (IFSS), interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and impact toughness. Particularly, when the water-to-dichloromethane ratio was 2:1, the most pronounced enhancements in IFSS and ILSS were observed, reaching values of 101.75 MPa and 101.41 MPa, respectively. The proposed strategy offers a novel approach to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CFRPs via polymer modification.

Construction of durable antibacterial coatings on PET fabrics via PEI grafting and Cu(II) coordination

Xiao Dingwen,Zhang Huidong,Fang Yueguang,Wang Ziran,Xiu Lanling,Ye Junwei

Textiles are susceptible to microbial colonization due to prolonged accumulation of organic residues, such as sweat and skin secretions. These residues serve as nutrients for pathogenic growth, elevating the risk of infection in everyday environments. To mitigate, we developed a composite coating with persistent antibacterial properties by grafting polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto PET fabric surfaces followed by Cu(II) coordination. The functionalized fabrics (PET-PEI-Cu) exhibited exceptional antibacterial efficacy, achieving a bacteriostatic rate exceeding 99.99% against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus , significantly outperforming commercial PET fabrics. Furthermore, PET-PEI-Cu demonstrated excellent laundering durability, retaining its antibacterial efficacy even after 50 repeated washing cycles. With its sustained antimicrobial activity, this fabric holds promise for reducing bacterial contamination in hospital bedding. This could help mitigate cross-infection risks, reduce the disinfection burden on healthcare staff, and lower operational costs. This work provided a scalable strategy for preparing high-performance, long-lasting antibacterial textiles with broad application prospects in healthcare and public health. Graphical abstract

Lignin/Fe3+ Coordination Networks via PDA/PEI Co-Deposition: A Green Strategy for Multifunctional Coatings

Yue Wang,Shengnan Yang,Jiawei Luo,Xiaodan Liu,Pan Cao

Mechanical components made of aluminum suffer from severe friction, wear, biofouling, and corrosion, yet existing coatings often fail to maintain stable tribological performance under cyclic loading. In this study, a nature-inspired multifunctional coating was fabricated on aluminum via co-deposition of lignin, Fe 3+ , dopamine, and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The Fe 3+ ions coordinate with phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin while simultaneously participating in Michael addition and Schiff-base reactions with DA and PEI, forming a dense crosslinked network. With an optimal lignin content of 5 wt% (L 5 /DA/PEI), the coating exhibits a significantly reduced coefficient of friction (0.43–0.46) and superior wear resistance, attributed to the lubricating boundary film formed by oxygen-containing groups in lignin. The same coating also demonstrates outstanding adhesion (96.97% residual area) and excellent corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution. Meanwhile, the coating with 10 wt% lignin (L 10 /DA/PEI) displays remarkable antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , benefiting from enhanced Fenton-like reactions that generate toxic hydroxyl radicals. The findings open new avenues for designing eco-friendly, multifunctional protective surfaces for durable aluminum components under complex service environments.

Wet-spinning fluorescent alginate fibres achieved by doping PEI modified CPDs for multiple anti-counterfeiting

Li Song,Xiaolan Qiao,Jianxin Sun,Na Yi,Mengyue Wang,Zhihui Zhao,Ruyi Xie,Weichao Chen,Yanzhi Xia

Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with satisfactory excitation-dependent-emission and biocompatibility had great potential in anti-counterfeiting fibres field. However, it was difficult for CPDs to combined into the fibres due to the unstable interaction between CPDs and spinnable polymer matrix. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used to modify CPDs (namely PEI-CPDs) for achieving stable interactions with sodium alginate (SA) by a simple method, which including the physical interaction between the amino groups of PEI-CPDs and carboxyl groups of SA and the chain entanglement between two types of polymer chains. Then alginate fibres based on PEI-CPDs (PEI-CPDs/CaALG fibres) were successfully prepared by wet-spinning for the first time with less loss of PEI-CPDs. The high mechanical strength, excellent thermal stability and good biocompatibility achieved by PEI-CPDs/CaALG fibres. Furthermore, the fibres exhibited the excitation-dependent-emission property. Anti-counterfeiting of the fibres was conducted on both textile and papers, which showed higher security than the existing anti-counterfeiting fibres.

Multi-component sorption of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ on PEI modified chitosan-based hybrid membranes

Chaojian Zhang,Tianrui Yang,Junsheng Liu,Qianqian Duan,Jiahui Song,Youjun Yin,Hansong Wang

Novel poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) modified chitosan-based hybrid membranes (PMCHMs) were created via a soft chemistry method, in which unmodified chitosan (CS) firstly reacted with PEI to produce a CS-PEI precursor. Later, such CS-PEI precursor was blended with silicone to create the membrane solution of PMCHMs. Finally, PMCHMs could be obtained via phase-inversion process. Multi-component sorption of Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ on PMCHMs in metal mixed solutions, such as, Pb 2+ &Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ &Ni 2+ binary, Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ ternary, as well as Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ and Cr 3+ quintuple mixed solutions, was inspected. The calculation of effective diffusion coefficients, distribution coefficients and selectivity coefficients showed that Pb 2+ sorption on PMCHMs had excellent selectivity in these mixed multi-metal solutions. While, the calculation of activation energy proved that Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ sorption on PMCHMs was a physic-sorption process Also, mechanism insight reveals that Pb 2+ sorption on PMCHMs could be depicted via Lagergren pseudo-2nd-order kinetic model and Langmuir or Freundlich isotherm equation. Exclusively, intra-particle diffusion process was discussed in detail. Desorption testing verified that HCl is a good desorbent for metals sorption on PMCHMs and the cycle time of membranes can arrive at 6 times. These results demonstrate that PMCHMs can be used to preferentially eradicate Pb 2+ from metal mixture solutions, showing prospective applications in the treatment of metal mixture wastewater from waste vehicle power-battery and other various metal-bearing polluted water.

Detecting metal ions by the color change in perylene diimide radical anion/b-PEI complex

Jing Ding,Jianping Zhang,Hailong Wang,Yahua Zhu,Mengming Sun,Qiang Wang,Haiquan Zhang

The photophysical properties of the hydrogen bonded complexes consisting of low-barrier hydrogen bond (LBHB) depend on their environmental conditions. However, the stimuli responsive materials based on LBHB are still a challenging problem. Here, we report a novel material system which has a high color response to metal ions based on the position changes of the proton between the two heavy atoms involved in the low barrier hydrogen bond. Perylene diimide radical anion/branched polyethyleneimine hydrogen bonding complex (TFPDI-b-PEI) linked by low-barrier hydrogen bond ([O 1 -----H 1 ---N 1 ] −1 ) is obtained. The spectral responses of TFPDI-b-PEI to different metal ions are investigated in DMF and aqueous solutions by UV–Vis spectrophotometry . The results show that TFPDI-b-PEI can recognize Al 3+ , Ni 2+ and Cd 2+ by the blue shift of characteristic absorption peak (from 789 nm to 565 nm) and the change of absorbance. In essence, the geometry of LBHB in TFPDI-b-PEI can switch between two types of hydrogen bond ([O 1 ----H 1 ----N 1 ] −1 and [O 1 -----H 1 ---N 1 ] −1 ) via adjusting the interaction between the surrounding molecules and amine groups in LBHB by interaction of metal ions with TFPDI-b-PEI. In addition, based on this hydrogen bonding dynamic property, TFPDI-b-PEI exhibits excellent colorimetric sensing performance for Al 3+ .

Silver-based conductive films on the filter paper template with the interfacial aid of PEI

Liu Yali,Zhang Sufeng,Hua Chen,Li Nan,Li Lei

Technological advancements in flexible and wearable electronics have driven a boom in high-performance flexible electrodes. In this study, a simple and low-cost bio-inspired filter paper (FP) template method using the interfacial-aided polyethyleneimine-functionalized filter paper (FP-PEI) was developed to fabricate highly flexible silver-based conductive films. The FP was modified through amination to obtain FP-PEI with the rigid cellulose backbone and the flexible side chain of grafted amino groups, which played a key role as an interfacial layer during the chemical deposition of fractal-structured silver particles (FSSPs). The naturally porous and rough network structures of FP templates provided structural support and network for the deposition of conductive materials. In addition, the high porosity of FP facilitated the effective transfer of electrons, and its nano- or micro-scale rough surface structure promoted the formation of strong adhesion between the cellulose substrate and the conductive layer, which was crucial for the conductive stability of the device. The obtained conductive films (FP-PEI/FSSPs) exhibited a low sheet resistance of 1.47 Ω sq −1 , a conductivity of 3401 S m −1 , and good mechanical properties with a stress strength of 6.17 MPa. Moreover, FP-PEI/FSSPs exhibited a stable electrical conductivity (the sheet resistance only increased by 0.06 Ω sq –1 through 500 bending cycles), thermal stability (the maximum thermal decomposition rate increased from 349.3 to 357.8 °C), and oxidation resistance (the sheet resistance increased by only 0.04 Ω sq –1 after FP was exposed to the air for 15 days). The results indicate that FP-PEI/FSSP conductive films can be a potential green flexible electronic material. Graphical abstract

PAN/PEI Nanofiber Membrane for Effective Removal of Heavy Metal Ions and Oil–Water Separation

Guo Wei,Guo Ruibin,Pei Hebing,Wang Bingjie,Liu Nijuan,Mo Zunli

Electrospinning nanofiber membranes (ENMs) have received widespread attention owing to their favorable permeability, easy preparation, low energy consumption and stability in wastewater treatment technologies. Polyacrylonitrile/polyethyleneimine (PAN/PEI) ENMs were prepared by electrospinning and evaluated in batch experiments for their removal of heavy metal ions (Pb (II), Cr (VI) and Cu (II)) in water. The adsorption capacities of PAN/PEI ENMs for Cr (VI) ions, Cu (II) ions and Pb (II) ions can reach up to 262 mg g −1 , 325 mg g −1 and 346 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption procedure follows the pseudo-second-order dynamics model and Langmuir model. In dynamic experiments, the removal rates of Pb (II) ions, Cr (VI) ions and Cu (II) ions can reach 80%, 100% and 80%, indicating that it has excellent removal efficiencies for heavy metal ions. At the same time, PAN/PEI ENMs have high separation ability and excellent flux for oil–water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions. PAN/PEI ENMs also have the advantages of simple preparation, easy recovery and no secondary pollution to the environment, indicating that PAN/PEI ENMs have some prospects for application in wastewater treatment.

Magnetic ZrO2/PEI/Fe3O4 functionalized MWCNTs composite with enhanced phosphate removal performance and easy separability

Xiaohuan Liu,Wenwu Cheng,Yangmi Yu,Shengtao Jiang,Yuzhi Xu,Enmin Zong

A novel adsorbent of ZrO 2 /PEI/Fe 3 O 4 functionalized MWCNTs composite (MWCNTs@Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-Zr) possessing a high affinity to phosphate and easily separated from aqueous solution was proposed in this work. The ZrO 2 and PEI modified on the surface act as active sites for the removal of phosphate, while the Fe 3 O 4 allows for the easy separation by applying an external magnetic field . Compared to traditional separation like centrifugation, magnetic separation markedly reduces energy consumption and provides more possibilities for application. The composite exhibits a relatively high surface area of 162.9 m 2 g -1 with a larger number of mesopores. As-prepared MWCNTs@Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-Zr is found to have a relatively high phosphate adsorption capacity of 21.14 mg P g −1 and it can be recovered rapidly from water under an external magnetic field . Moreover, MWCNTs@Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-Zr exhibits an outstanding anti-interference capability in terms of the coexisting ion and ionic strength of solutions. Importantly, the dissolution of Zr and Fe are negligible (less than 0.015 mg L −1 ) over a wide pH range of 4.04–9.98, indicating that the MWCNTs@Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-Zr is a structurally stable hybrid composite particle with strong interaction. Furthermore, it shows a good reusability and 86.2% removal efficiency of phosphate remains after three consecutive cycles. Both the ligand exchange and the electrostatic attraction are mainly responsible for phosphate removal by MWCNTs@Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-Zr. This work demonstrated that the highly efficient, easy separable, high stability and reusability MWCNTs@Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-Zr composite has the potential for phosphate removal.

Surface modification of h-BN and preparation of h-BN/PEI thermally conductive flexible films

Wenhao Luo,Jinling Zeng,Yanrong Chen,Wenbin Dai,Yingbang Yao,Bing Luo,Fuzeng Zhang,Tingting Wang

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) micro-platelets were surface-functionalized by sulfuric acid (SA). Such modified h-BN powders were mixed with thermoplastic polyether imide (PEI) to prepare flexible composite films using a solution casting method. After surface modification, the h-BN powders were uniformly dispersed in the PEI matrix. The thermal conductivity of the flexible composite materials was significantly improved, with a 60% increase over that of pure PEI. The mechanical properties of the composites were also measured and discussed. The Young's modulus of the h-BN/PEI composites was increased from 1.15 GPa for pure PEI to 1.62 GPa for the h-BN/PEI composite with a filling ratio 10 vol%. As compared to pure PEI film, the electrical breakdown strength of the composites with 5 vol% h-BN increased from 45.3 to 55.3 kV/mm. Our results show that the surface-modified h-BN filler is effective in improving the thermal conductivity and insulation performance of PEI-based composites.

Multilayered nacre-mimetic inspired flexible PEI film with high thermal conductivity and reliable dielectric performances

Zhongyang Chu,Weizhen Li,Shiqiang Song,Weichao Yuan,Shuangbao Zhu,Wenjun Gan

It is critically desired to integrate high in-plane thermal conductivity (TC) and distinguished electric insulation for thermal conductive film in modern electronic devices. Herein, integration of high TC and electric insulation in sandwich-like BNNSs@MWCNTs/PEI (S-BNNSs@MWCNTs/PEI) composite film has been successfully achieved by layer-by-layer spin coating and hot pressing inspired by highly ordered structure of natural nacre . The covalently bonded connections between BNNSs and MWCNTs are beneficial to create more efficient heat conduction path, which can partly decrease the interfacial thermal resistance and phonon scattering. The resultant S-BNNSs@MWCNTs/PEI composite films possess a high in-plane TC of 6.88 W m −1 K −1 . Meantime, benefiting from the alternating multilayer structure, the composite films exhibit satisfactory reliable dielectric performances with flexibility, which shows great potential in ceramics-filled polymer composite TIMs.
