Moisture exposure during polyester processing can lead to degradation, resulting in the formation of carboxyl and hydroxyl end-groups. To preserve mechanical properties, thorough drying and the use of chain extenders like epoxy acrylates and isocyanates during extrusion are crucial for maintaining or enhancing molecular weight through in-situ reactions. Our study introduced epoxidized cardanol oleate (ECD-OA), containing epoxy and long-chain alkyl groups, as a potential chain extender, and compared its effectiveness with commercially available epoxidized cardanol glycidyl ether (cardolite NC514). Compared to neat PLA without chain extension, the addition of 1 phr ECD-OA resulted in an increase in the molecular weight ( M w ) of PLA from 15.3 × 10 4 g/mol to 17.1 × 10 4 g/mol, demonstrating a chain extension efficiency of 11.8 %. The melt flow rate of PLA decreased from 9.9 g/10 min to 5.0 g/10 min, and the initial thermal degradation temperature of PLA increased by 5.7 °C. Upon chain extension, there was a substantial increase in both the elongation at break and tear resistance of the PLA film. The results demonstrate that ECD-OA can extend PLA molecular chains through chemical reactions and promote entanglement with the long alkane chain, consequently enhancing the mechanical and thermal properties of PLA. Due to the enzyme's preference for biobased small molecules, the PLA film with the addition of a biobased chain extender is more prone to enzymatic degradation compared to neat PLA. To conclude, ECD-OA acts as a bio-based chain extender that improves the performance of PLA while also enhancing its biodegradability.

The linear poly( L -lactide) and poly( D -lactide) (PLLA, PDLA) with relative lower molecular weights were synthesized, and PLLA/PDLA blends at various content of PDLA were prepared by solution casting. The morphology and growth of poly(lactide) stereocomplex (PLA SC) were investigated by polarized optical microscope. Results revealed that the morphology of SC in the blends strongly depended on the content of PDLA and the annealing temperature. Dendritic and irregular SC with looser structure developed in the specimens with lower content of PDLA, and regular SC spherulites with birefringent and compact structure produced in the specimens with higher content of PDLA. The growth rate ( G ) of SC increased gradually as the content of PDLA enhanced in the blends. As the annealing temperature enhanced, the SC with brighter and more compact structure appeared. The G value increased at first before declining as the annealing temperature elevated from the 130 to 190°C. And the nonlinear behavior of the growth of SC in the dissimilar specimens was analyzed.

Purpose : In the present study, to achieve high paclitaxel (PTX) loading in a conjugated drug delivery system with minimal long-term side effects, we formulated a novel degradable stereocomplexed micelle-like particle with a core-shell structure. Materials and methods : In this system, methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG) acted as the hydrophilic shell, and the stereocomplex of polylactic acid with PTX (SCPLA-PTX) acted as the hydrophobic core. The MPEG-SCPLA-PTX micelle-like particles were synthesized via the self-assembly of a MPEG-poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) copolymer with a PTX-poly D-lactic acid-PTX copolymer. The resultant copolymers and their intermediates were characterized using 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance and GPC. Micelle-like particles with different molecular weight ratios of MPEG and PLLA were synthesized to demonstrate the functions of both components. Results : PTX loading into MPEG2000Da-PLLA6000Da particles reached as high as 20.11%. At 216 h, the cumulative release from MPEG5000Da-PLLA6000Da, MPEG2000Da-PLLA6000Da, and MPEG5000Da-PLLA22000Da particles were 51.5%, 37.7%, and 52.0%, respectively. Conclusions : According to the cell uptake experiments, inhibition of tumor cell growth was satisfactory, indicating that the stereocomplexed particles developed in the present study can be employed as a promising nanocarrier for PTX delivery.

Wound healing is a complex process that requires the coordinated action of various cell lineages, among which fibroblasts play an important role at all stages of wound healing. Due to its gentle nature and precise controllability, electrical stimulation has also attracted attention in the wound healing process. To this end, we constructed a carbon nanotube (CNT)-based conductive dressing—polylactic acid/gelatin/CNT (PLA/GE/CNT)—using electrospinning technology. This material has good biocompatibility, and its fibers are characterized by aligned orientation. When combined with external electrical stimulation, it effectively promotes fibroblast proliferation and adhesion, as well as collagen deposition. In a full-thickness skin injury model in rats, the PLA/GE/CNT combined with electrical stimulation significantly accelerated wound healing with high quality. In summary, the PLA/GE/CNT fabricated via electrospinning combines the excellent biocompatibility of PLA/GE with the conductivity of CNT. When used together with external electrical stimulation, it effectively promotes changes in fibroblast behavior and accelerates wound healing. Our study provides support for the development of electrospun fiber-based conductive dressings combined with external electrical stimulation to promote wound healing. Graphical A conductive electrospun polylactic acid/gelatin/carbon nanotube dressing is developed and combined with exogenous electrical stimulation to accelerate skin wound healing. This integrated platform provides synergistic biophysical and electrical cues that significantly promote fibroblast proliferation, enhance robust collagen network deposition, and facilitate dermal remodeling, presenting a promising therapeutic strategy for repairing full-thickness skin defects.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is attractive for fused deposition modeling (FDM), yet its structural use is constrained by the coupled challenges of flammability, additive-induced embrittlement, and printed-part reliability. Herein, a material–structure integrated strategy is proposed by coupling a biomass-derived phosphorus–carbon flame-retardant formulation with multi-material FDM and beetle elytra-inspired cellular design. Epoxidized soybean oil-modified orange peel powder (EOP) was combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to construct a synergistic flame-retardant PLA system, in which the optimized A20E10 formulation containing 20 wt% APP and 10 wt% EOP achieved an LOI of 34%, a UL-94 V-0 rating, and a reduced THR of approximately 30 MJ m −2 through APP-catalyzed carbonization and EOP-assisted compact char formation. To decouple fire protection from load-bearing function, A20E10 was extruded into flame-retardant PLA (fr-PLA) filament and spatially printed with neat PLA into a beetle elytra-inspired fr-PLA/PLA/fr-PLA sandwich honeycomb architecture. The resulting biomimetic structure spatially positions flame-retardant fr-PLA in the outer protective regions while retaining neat PLA as the mechanically supportive core, with the honeycomb geometry contributing to heat-transfer regulation and load dispersion. In this manner, the intrinsic flame-retardant function of A20E10 is deployed at the structural level without uniformly incorporating flame-retardant additives throughout the entire component. This work establishes a sustainable additive-manufacturing route for lightweight fire-safe PLA components with spatially programmed material functions.

Microplastic pollution is widespread, infiltrating water bodies and soil, entering the food chain, and thereby posing threats to ecosystems and human health. In this study, anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) was prepared via a hydrothermal method and subsequently modified with bio-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The composite exhibited optimal performance when the concentration of the carbon source (citric acid) was 0.17 M, yielding carbon dots with an observable size of approximately 4.18 nm. The formation of Ti–O–C chemical bonds between the carbon dots and TiO2 was observed. Compared to pristine TiO2, the CQDs@TiO2 composite displayed a reduced bandgap, significantly enhanced light absorption in the visible region, improved photogenerated charge carrier transport, and suppressed non-radiative recombination, leading to a substantial enhancement in photocatalytic performance. The CQDs@TiO2 photocatalyst was employed for the photodegradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that under illumination at 100 mW cm−2 in a pH 8 buffer solution, CQDs@TiO2 effectively catalyzed the degradation of alkali-pretreated PET and PLA microplastic samples, with 48 h degradation rates of 28.9% and 59.8%, respectively. The degradation of both types of plastics primarily relied on the synergistic action of 1O2, h+, ˙O2− and ˙OH generated by the photocatalyst, both undergoing a degradation process centered on the cleavage of ester bonds. This study not only demonstrates the superior photocatalytic efficacy of the CQDs@TiO2 composite but also establishes it as a viable strategy for mitigating the urgent challenge of microplastic pollution under near-natural conditions.

In this work, we adopt “hyperthermal hydrogen-induced cross-linking (HHIC) technology” to fix an interfacial control layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA) on polylactic acid (PLA) to improve the adhesion and integrity of the permeation barrier film, and meanwhile, the HHIC treatment causes no measurable damage to the functional groups of PAA and PLA. Consequently, the oxygen transmission rate decreases from 150.00 to 0.50 ml m −2 day −1 (a reduction of 99.7%), which is less than one tenth of the best value reported, and that the water vapour transmission rate decreases from 32.93 to 16.25 g m −2 day −1 (a reduction of 50.7%), which is slightly higher than the best value reported (3.8% higher). Our work shows that the HHIC technology used in this study provides an efficient way to improve the oxygen and water vapour blocking ability of PLA and may help in improving the quality of other polymer heterointerfaces in the future.

Polylactic acid (PLA)/polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) blend is a fully degradable polymer blend with balanced strength and toughness. However, the performance of PLA/PBAT blends deteriorates significantly after undergoing physical aging. In this work, dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and methyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (P(MMA-co-GMA)) were used respectively for reactive compatibilization by dynamic vulcanization. The effects of dynamic vulcanization on the interfacial compatibility and thus on the mechanical properties of PLA/PBAT blends were evaluated using nanomechanical mapping. Results show that the degree of interfacial compatibilization can be determined by the interface length of microscopic Young's moduli distribution between PLA and PBAT. A longer interfacial length indicates an enhanced interfacial interaction between the components in the blend, which leads to improved macroscopic mechanical properties. Moreover, the improvement of interfacial compatibility allows the PLA/PBAT blends to maintain higher mechanical properties after physical aging, which provides an experimental basis for the design of PLA-based blends with both high mechanical properties and resistance to physical aging.

A superhydrophilic polylactic acid (PLA) fiber membrane was fabricated by developing a hydrophilic silica surface layer on electrospun fibers. The drawn fibers were twisted and activated in an ethanol solution, leading to the shrinkage of the membrane and enhancing surface hydrophilicity, as well as reducing the pore size of the membrane. Through the coupling of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, silica was polymerized in situ on the fiber surface of the electrospun PLA membrane to achieve a superhydrophilic surface. The membrane underwent degradation in a sodium hydroxide aqueous solution at a rate of 2.240 min −1 . The membrane was employed for separating surface-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. The oil droplet sizes in the filtrates were 93, 169, and 132 nm, respectively. The water flux of the membrane for ionic oil-in-water emulsions reached 3205 L·m −2 ·h −1 , attributed to the electrostatic effect on the membrane surface (35.35 eV) and the sieving effect of the pore channel (0.918 μm). In contrast, the water flux for nonionic emulsions was only 350 L·m −2 ·h −1 . Furthermore, after immersing the membrane in the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate again, the oil retention rate remained at 98.6%, and the water flux recovery rate was sustained at 96.3% over 30 cycles of separating oil-in-water emulsion.

As an alternative to fossil-based polymers, polylactide acid (PLA) has stimulated a significant research effort in the past few years due to the demand for environmentally friendly products. Even though PLA is considered a sustainable or bio-based material, the long-term degradation in ambient conditions increases the volume of waste at end-of-life. To overcome this issue, PLA waste can be recycled to produce new manufactures; however, this approach does not always ensure the same mechanical properties as the original PLA. This study shows for the first time that adding biochar, a carbon material derived from biomass pyrolysis, enhances the processability and stability of composite recycled PLA. Composites are provided in 1, 2.5, and 5 wt% of the biochar filler, resulting in good processability, a higher modulus of up to 20%, and a higher stability to degradation in the presence of UV aging treatment with respect to the raw material. Additionally, DSC analysis shows a significant nucleation effect induced by the biochar that achieves 30% crystallinity from an essentially amorphous PLA.

During the healing and reconstruction process of digestive tract, biodegradable anastomat plays an important role. Various of materials have been explored to prepare suitable anastomat. However, the biodegradable ratio or biocompatibility could not meet the requirement of wound healing in clinical application. To overcome these obstacles, we synthetized methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polylactide (mPEG-b-PLA) and methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (mPEG-b-PLGA) with different molecular weight. Biodegradable anastomotic tubes were prepared from these diblock copolymers using electrospinning technique. The thickness of anastomotic tube could be regulated by spinning conditions. Anastomotic tubes had exhibited excellent hemocompatibility (hemolysis ratios were ranged from 0.5% to 1.5%) and cytocompatibility. After 3 days, epithelial cells were adhered closely and covered fully on the surface of nanofibrous tubes. Moreover, mPEG-b-PLGA3 based anastomotic tube had play an important role to improve the healing and reconstruction process of cecal incision. The biodegradable anastomotic tubes from diblock copolymers of mPEG-b-PLA and mPEG-b-PLGA could promote healing and reconstruction of digestive tract and might play an important role after operation.

To repair irregular bone defects after tumor resection, this study employed FDM 3D printing technology to incorporate PDA modified CuFeSe 2 ceramic nanoparticles into a PLA/PEG matrix, thereby constructing a multifunctional composite scaffold that integrates shape memory and photothermal capabilities. The composite scaffolds possessed compression strength matching that of cancellous bone. With the plasticizing effect of PEG, the glass transition temperature (T g ) of the scaffold containing PDA@CuFeSe 2 was modulated to 39.7°C, achieving a shape recovery ratio exceeding 89%. Further proof of concept experiments revealed that the scaffold could undergo spiral adaptive deployment in a warm water bath and enable remotely controlled recovery of a petaloid structure via NIR light stimulation. This confirms its potential for minimally invasive implantation and noncontact regulation in complex defect environments. The scaffold with PDA@CuFeSe 2 could steadily generate mild heat at around 45°C to induce tumor cell apoptosis. Additionally, PDA conferred enhanced hydrophilicity to the scaffold, which accelerated PLA degradation while buffering local pH fluctuations. Moreover, the in-situ surface deposition at the solid-liquid interface inhibited the early burst release of metal ions, ensuring a long-term and safe release profile. In vitro mineralization and cellular experiments demonstrated that the composite scaffold effectively induced calcium phosphate minerals deposition, exhibited good cell compatibility, and promoted osteogenic differentiation.
