Polyethylene terephthalate is a major source of plastic pollution, posing significant environmental risks and requiring effective degradation methods. In the present work, the CuWO 4-x /Cobalt Phthalocyanine (CoPc) step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction was used as a photothermal-assisted photocatalyst to facilitate the degradation of polyethylene terephthalate via peroxymonosulfate activation in a cooperative photocatalytic system. The CuWO 4-x /CoPc sample exhibited optimal polyethylene terephthalate removal efficiency under the illumination conditions, reaching 83 % after the addition of 3 mM peroxymonosulfate. The influence of peroxymonosulfate dosage, aquatic environment, pH, and coexisting anions on polyethylene terephthalate degradation was thoroughly investigated. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and radical quenching experiment findings implied that the CuWO 4-x /CoPc composite followed the S-scheme heterojunction charge transfer process. Owing to the formation of the S-scheme heterojunction, the electron and hole transport and separation efficiency in the CuWO 4-x /CoPc photocatalyst was significantly enhanced. Infrared thermography images further revealed that the temperature rise of the solution during the catalytic process resulted from the photothermal property of CoPc, thus enhancing the degradation efficiency of polyethylene terephthalate plastics. Additionally, CuWO 4-x /CoPc demonstrated remarkable reusability and consistency in cycling experiments. This research presents an effective strategy by developing a photothermal-assisted S-scheme heterojunction system for the degradation of waste microplastics in aqueous environments.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have gained significant attention due to their strong oxidative capacity and rapid reaction kinetics. However, the development of efficient, stable, and eco-friendly catalysts remains a major challenge in realizing practical applications. To address this issue, a novel catalyst, Co 1 Ce 2 O x @PAL, was synthesized via the sol-gel method to enhance PMS activation efficiency by leveraging rare-earth doping and the carrier properties of palygorskite (PAL). Comprehensive characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, etc.) confirmed successful synthesis and favorable structural properties. Norfloxacin (NOR) was selected as the target contaminant to evaluate the catalytic performance of Co 1 Ce 2 O x @PAL. Under an optimal condition (30% metal loading, 0.3 g/L catalyst, 0.5 mM PMS, pH 6.2), NOR removal efficiency reached 95%, with an apparent rate constant of 0.15 min -1 . Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses revealed that played a dominant role in NOR degradation. and were generated through the redox reactions between Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ . Furthermore, oxygen vacancies facilitated electron transfer, thereby promoting radical production and NOR degradation efficiency. DFT calculation, including electrostatic potential and frontier orbital analyses (HOMO/LUMO), identified the quinolone and piperazine rings as the most susceptible sites for radical attack. Four potential degradation pathways were proposed accordingly. The catalyst demonstrated a high stability and reusability, maintaining over 80% NOR removal after five cycles. ECOSAR predicted reduced toxicity for most transformation products. This study highlights the potential of Co 1 Ce 2 O x @PAL as an effective catalyst for sustainable water treatment by enabling efficient degradation of trace emerging contaminants and promoting water resource recycling.

Cotton-derived Co-CN-X catalysts via dopamine-assisted polymerization–pyrolysis. • Co-CN-24 exhibits superior catalytic activity and robust stability in PMS activation. • Nitrogen doping catalysts coupled PMS system governs non-radical pathways toward electron-rich pollutants degradation. Biomass-derived materials offer renewability and waste valorization for water purification, yet identifying and controlling their precise ROS-driven degradation pathway in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based systems remains a fundamental challenge. Herein, we report N-doped cobalt‑carbon catalysts (Co-CN-X) from cotton via polymerization-pyrolysis and show how nitrogen doping tailors PMS activation for pollutant degradation. Upon nitrogen introduction, the optimized Co-CN-24 catalyst achieves efficient carbamazepine degradation, reaching 96.55% within 35 min with a 7.12-fold enhancement in reaction efficiency compared to the Co-C counterpart. Integrated characterization and DFT calculations reveal that Co-CN-24 possessing high pyrrolic N and Co 0 content abundant facilitates 1 O 2 generation, thereby increasing the dominance of non-radical pathways in pollutant degradation. Most importantly, the Co-CN-24/PMS system exhibits selective reactivity toward electron-rich pollutants, broad pH tolerance, and robust performance in complex water matrices, including continuous flow experiments. This work provides mechanistic insight into how nitrogen doping regulates non-radical pathways in biomass-derived catalysts, offering a sustainable strategy for targeted pollutant remediation.

In peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation processes, the relatively slow redox kinetics of metal ions have been a key factor limiting both PMS activation efficiency and photocatalytic performance. In this study, a Co 3 O 4 /PTFE composite with integrated piezoelectric and photothermal properties was successfully constructed, which significantly enhanced the Co 3+ /Co 2+ cycle and thereby promoted PMS activation for efficient tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the dual stimulation of mechanical agitation and visible light irradiation, the Co 3 O 4 /PTFE composite exhibited enhanced photothermal conversion and piezoelectric performance, which significantly promoted the generation of reactive species such as SO 4 •- and •OH. Compared with pristine Co 3 O 4 , CoP-2 demonstrated a superior TC degradation efficiency of up to 83% in the PMS system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the introduction of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) induced interfacial strain, modulated the valence state of cobalt species, and optimized the surface electronic structure, thereby facilitating the formation of active sites and enhancing electron transfer processes. Free radical trapping experiments further identified the dominant reactive species and revealed the underlying synergistic catalytic mechanism. Moreover, CoP-2 maintained excellent stability after multiple degradation cycles. This study provides a novel strategy for the design of multifunctional synergistic catalysts and expands the application potential of piezo-photothermal/PMS systems in environmental purification.

In this study, Ni-doped Ti/SnO 2 -Sb anode (Ti/NATO) was prepared and used for electrocatalytic ozone production and in-situ activated peroxymonosulfate (E-Ti/NATO-PMS) to degrade bisphenol A (BPA). SEM, XRD and XPS results indicated that Ni doping could influence the transformations of Sb 5+ and Sb 3+ ions, which decreased the agglomeration of crystallites and increased the O ads and oxygen vacancy (O v ) concentrations. Ti/NATO 1.0 anodes significantly improved the ozone production via outcompeting of the adsorbed O 2ads over water, and inhibiting the desorption of O 2ads , to obtain the highest O 3 concentration with low onset potential and high oxygen evolution potential. E-Ti/NATO 1.0 -PMS system obtained over 92% BPA degradation within 60 min at 10 mA cm −2 and pH ranging from 4 to 10. Radical scavenging experiments revealed that O 3 in situ generated could directly electro-activate PMS into •O 2 − and 1 O 2 . The E-Ti/NATO 1.0 -PMS process could detoxify the BPA through chain scission, rearrangement and ring opening processes, and exhibited great potentials for application.

Transition metal oxides have been recognized as promising catalysts for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), while the underlying mechanism involved in the relevant processes remains obscure. Here, we identify the reactive species generated in the CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS process and illustrate their roles in the degradation of aromatic compounds with different substituent groups (i.e., phenol and benzoic acid). Experimental results showed that free radicals (i.e., sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (HO • ), surface Cu(III) species, and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) coexist in the CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS process. The free radicals are mainly responsible for the oxidation of aromatic compounds with electron-withdrawing group (i.e., benzoic acid), while the surface Cu(III) is the major reactive species for the removal of aromatic compounds with electron-donating group (i.e., phenol). In addition, 1 O 2 plays a negligible role in the oxidation of both benzoic acid and phenol. This study enhances the fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanism involved in the transition metal oxides-catalyzed PMS activation process.

Base on the strong activation activity and affinity of transition metal ions and MoS 2 for peroxymonosulfate (PMS), respectively, Co(Ⅱ)-doped MoS 2 nano-flowers (Co-MoS 2 NFs) with a great photo-response property was facilely synthesized to achieve a more efficient PMS activation for ofloxacian (OFX) degradation. It was found that Co-MoS 2 NFs exhibits superior catalytic activity for OFX degradation under visible-light irradiation, which was attributed to the synergetic effect of doped Co(Ⅱ) and photo-generated carriers to PMS activation. Besides, Co-MoS 2 NFs was able to efficiently degrade OFX within 4 cycles in the presence of PMS while leaked minute amount of Mo and Co ions, implying the excellent cycle stability of Co-MoS 2 NFs. Furthermore, SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 were detected as the primary reactive radicals for OFX degradation in the Co-MoS 2 NFs-PMS system through EPR and quenching tests. This new strategy of coupling doped Co(Ⅱ) and photo-generated carriers for more efficient PMS activation, which will greatly benefit the development of SO 4 •− -based AOPs as well as cater to the demand for environmental remediation in the future.

The cobalt ferrite materials (Co x Fe 3−x O 4 ) with different molar ratios of Co:Fe (1:16, 1:8, 1:4, 1:2, and 3:4) were synthesized by simple co-precipitation method, and used for catalyzing activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The effects of catalyst dose, PMS dose, pH value, and inorganic ions on the degradation of SMX were investigated. Particularly, the degradation efficiency of SMX reached 91% within 10 min in CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS, and the removal rate of SMX achieved 81% at first 1 min. Meanwhile, the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS reaction system exhibited excellent catalytic performance at a wide pH range from 3.00 to 11.00. The CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst could be easily magnetically separated and exhibited high stability in cycle experiments. EPR and quenching experiments showed that 1 O 2 , SO 4 − , and OH species were produced in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system, especially OH and 1 O 2 played dominant roles during the degradation of SMX. The catalytic degradation mechanism of SMX in the CoFe 2 O 4 /SMX system was proposed, involving radical process and non-radical process. This work will provide a new way for the efficient treatment of wastewater especially those containing SMX compounds.

The limited production of Cu + in the Cu 2+ /PMS processes constrained its large-scan application for the elimination of organic pollutants . In this study, molybdenum powder (Mo) was applied as the co-catalyst to improve the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in Cu 2+ /PMS system at pH 5.6. By the assistance of Mo, Cu 2+ was rapidly reduced to Cu + which exhibited super activity for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Compared with Cu 2+ /PMS processes, the PMS decomposition rate and 2,4-DCP degradation efficiency respectively increased by 62.1% and 83.6% in the Mo co-catalytic Cu 2+ /PMS system after reaction for 20 min. The degradation of 2,4-DCP was completed via both the free radical and non-radical pathways and the free radicals rather than Cu 3+ contributed most to the reaction. In contrast to fresh Mo, the ratio of Mo 4+ increased and Mo 6+ decreased in the used Mo powder, due to the oxidation of Mo 0 by Cu 2+ and/or ∙OH and the reduction of Mo 6+ by O 2 ∙ − . Additionally, the coexistence of Cl - and humic acid with low concentrations showed little effects on the Mo/Cu 2+ /PMS system while HCO 3 − presented an obvious depression for 2,4-DCP degradation. During five cycling runs, all the degradation rates were higher than 92.8%, indicating the good stability of Mo/Cu 2+ /PMS system.

In recent ten years, the sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been paid increasing attention due to their superior performance and adaptability in decomposition of organic pollutants. The spinel ferrites (SFs) and spinel ferrite-based composites (SFCs) coupling with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for heterogeneous catalysis is an efficient way to decompose the organic pollutants by generating reactive sulfate radicals. This article reviewed the recent progress on diverse heterogeneous ferrites (Ni/Cu/Zn/Co/Mn-ferrites) and ferrite composites catalysts ( i.e. , (Ni/Cu/Zn/Co/Mn-ferrites supported by various substrates) for PMS activation. Besides, impacting factors, synergistic methods of SFs/SFCs-PMS systems in organic decomposition and potential applications were also considered and discussed. Eventually, we proposed the future recommendations and challenges related to SFs and SFCs catalysts, heterogeneous SFs/SFCs-PMS systems and their possible applications in wastewater purification.

Fe(II)-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process was able to degrade persistent organic pollutants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), but the slow transformation rate from the generated Fe(III) to Fe(II) restricted the efficiency of this process. In this study, we found that the addition of small quantities of gallic acid (GA), a model compound of natural polyphenols, in the Fe(III)/PMS process (namely GA/Fe(III)/PMS process) could exert a long-term influence on Fe(II) recycle and accelerated the degradation of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) over 72 h. Under conditions of 20.3 µM GA, 13.6 µM Fe(III) and 400 µM PMS, the degradation efficiency of BDE47 reached 85%, which was 9.4 times higher than that in the Fe(III)/PMS process. The degradation kinetics can be divided into an initial “fast stage” (k obs1 = 0.298 h −1 ) and a second “slow stage” (k obs2 = 0.021 h −1 ). Aromatic radicals such as hydroxycyclohexadienyl radical (poly-HCD ) produced by the attack of SO 4 − /HO on GA was proposed to be responsible for Fe(II) recycle in the first stage, while ring-opened products following SO 4 − /HO attack of GA-quinone mainly initiated Fe(III) reduction in the second stage. Owing to the multiple Fe(III) reduction pathways, PMS would be continuously activated by Fe(II) to form SO 4 − and HO , which were the dominant reactive species for BDE47 degradation. Finally, natural polyphenols extracted from green tea were proven effective in enhancing BDE47 degradation in Fe(III)/PMS process. This study not only provides a new way to propagate Fe(II)-activated persulfate chain reactions for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants, like PBDEs, but also sheds new insight into the reactivity of organic byproducts toward Fe in PMS-based oxidation system.

Co-N-C@SiO 2 with Co, N doped carbon as core and SiO 2 as shell was successfully synthesized by template method, and SiO 2 shell was about 43 wt%. Impressively, the SiO 2 shell increased the active sites of the core in Co-N-C@SiO 2 preparation, and reduced the loss of active sites during use. Co-N-C@SiO 2 /PMS was a 1 O 2 dominated non-radical reaction, which was less interfered by solution pH and water constituents. In addition, Co-N-C@SiO 2 possessed better cycling performance compared with Co-N-C. Finally, the possible SMX degradation pathways were presented based on the identified intermediate products.
