Thermosensitive Microgels-Decorated Magnetic Graphene Oxides for Specific Recognition and Adsorption of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution

Liting Pan,Guanzhong Zhai,Xiaorong Yang,Hairong Yu,Changjing Cheng

Herein, we report a novel type of smart graphene oxide nanocomposites (MGO@PNB) with excellent magnetism and high thermosensitive ion-recognition selectivity of lead ions (Pb2+). The MGO@PNB are fabricated by immobilizing superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-benzo-18-crown-6 acrylamide) thermosensitive microgels (PNB) onto graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets using a simple one-step solvothermal method and mussel-inspired polydopamine chemistry. The PNB are composed of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains with numerous appended 18-crown-6 units. The 18-crown-6 units serve as hosts that can selectively recognize and capture Pb2+ from aqueous solution, and the PNIPAM chains act as a microenvironmental actuator for the inclusion constants of 18-crown-6/Pb2+ host–guest complexes. The loaded Fe3O4 NPs endow the MGO@PNB with convenient magnetic separability. The fabricated MGO@PNB demonstrate remarkably high ion-recognition selectivity of Pb2+ among the coexisting metal ions because of the formation of stable 18-crown-6/Pb2+ inclusion complexes. Most interestingly, the MGO@PNB show excellent thermosensitive adsorption ability toward Pb2+ due to the incorporation of PNIPAM functional chains on the GO. Further thermodynamic studies indicate that the adsorption of Pb2+ onto the MGO@PNB is a spontaneous and endothermic process. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Most importantly, the Pb2+-loaded MGO@PNB can be more easily regenerated by alternatively washing with hot/cold water than the commonly used regeneration methods. Such multifunctional graphene oxide nanocomposites could be used for specific recognition and removal of Pb2+ from water environment.

Tailored Janus silica nanosheets integrating bispecific artificial receptors for simultaneous adsorption of 2,6-dichlorophenol and Pb(II)

Jinxin Liu,Pan Wang,Mengdie Zhou,Yue Ma,Xiangheng Niu,Guoqing Pan,Jianming Pan

Potentially toxic dichlorophenols and heavy metal ions commonly coexist in industrial sewage, posing a serious threat to public health and the environment and making the treatment more challenging. Inspired by Suzhou bifacial embroidery, whereby the Janus-like planar structure allows different compositions to be compartmentalized onto two distinct surfaces, Janus silica nanosheets partitioning bispecific artificial receptors (i.e., molecularly imprinted sites and thiol groups) onto distinct recognition surfaces (J-MIPs/cys) were designed to independently take up 2,6-dichlorophenol (DCP) and Pb(II). For J-MIPs/cys, the thiol groups are expected to capture Pb(II) via chelating action and molecularly imprinted cavities act as highly specific recognition sites for DCP. J-MIPs/cys possessed uniform cross-sectional dimensions and thickness (∼25.3 nm), and a particle-like surface imprinted layer (∼21.8 nm). In the monocomponent system, J-MIPs/cys displayed fast binding kinetics (60 min and 45 min), large monolayer adsorption capacity (129.4 mg g−1 and 82.95 mg g−1), high affinity, and excellent regeneration after five reuse cycles (9.134% and 12.16% loss in adsorption amounts) for DCP and Pb(II), respectively. Additionally, a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process was also confirmed. In a binary system, the presence of Pb(II) produced a prominent increase in DCP adsorption at high initial concentrations and a decrease at low initial concentrations, owing to the partial complexation of Pb(II) with excess DCP and occupation of imprinted sites by Pb(II). However, the uptake of Pb(II) was inhibited over the whole range of concentration in the presence of DCP due to the competitive adsorption onto thiol groups. In summary, J-MIPs/cys integrating novel bispecific receptors open wide possibilities for efficient and specific treatment of coexisting toxic pollutants.

Adsorption and Desorption of Pb(II) on l-Lysine Modified Montmorillonite and the simulation of Interlayer Structure

Sidi Zhu,Mingzhu Xia,Yuting Chu,Muhammad Asim Khan,Wu Lei,Fengyun Wang,Tahir Muhmood,Along Wang

Herein, we reported the adsorption and desorption of Pb(II) on l -lysine modified montmorillonite (L-Mt) with molecular dynamics simulation. l -lysine (Lys) modified montmorillonite (L-Mt) was prepared, characterized by various analytical techniques, and the simulation studies were performed to evaluate the interlayer structure and interaction properties of l -lysine and L-Mt. The results of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum suggested that Lys + was intercalated into the interlayer of Na-montmorillonite (Na Mt) successfully. The batch adsorption experiments were implemented to study the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) on L-Mt in water. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) on the L-Mt (up to 43.3 mmol/100 g) were considerably higher than that on Na Mt (up to 15.3 mmol/100 g), at room temperature. The adsorption isotherms of both, L-Mt and Na Mt can fit the Langmuir isotherm . The adsorption experiments showed that Pb(II) removal efficiency of L-Mt is better than Na Mt in acidic solution. The simulation results revealed the micro-mechanism of Lys + inserted into the interlayer gallery of Na Mt. It can be deduced that lysine interacted with montmorillonite surface mainly through the protonated side-chain amino group rather than through the protonated main-chain amino group or deprotonated carboxyl group . These consequences are expected to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms occurring at the water/clay minerals interface at atom level, providing significant insight into the adsorption and retention of Pb(II) on L-Mt composite, and lead to relevant engineering applications while treating heavy metals of wastewater.

Protamine-stabilized gold nanoclusters as a fluorescent nanoprobe for lead(II) via Pb(II)–Au(I) interaction

Huang Yan-Qin,Yang Li-Na,Wang Yong-Sheng,Xue Jin-Hua,Chen Si-Han

The authors report on a one-pot approach for synthesizing highly fluorescent protamine-stabilized gold nanoclusters. These are shown to be a viable nanoprobe for selective and sensitive fluorometric determination of lead(II) via quenching of fluorescence via Pb(II)-Au(I) interaction. Under optimized conditions, fluorescence measured at excitation/emission peaks of 300/599 nm drops in the 80 nM–15 μM lead(II) concentration range. The detection limit is 24 nM, and relative standard deviations (for n  = 11) at concentrations of 0.10, 4.0 and 15 μM are 1.6, 2.5 and 1.9%, respectively. The relative recoveries of added lead(II) in the water samples ranged from 97.9 ± 2.29% to 101.2 ± 1.83%. Lead(II) ions are found to be able to selectively and sensitively quench the fluorescence of the protamine-gold nanoclusters (PRT-AuNCs). Thereby, an inexpensive, selective and sensitive lead(II) assay was established.

Efficient Adsorption of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solutions by Metal Organic Framework (Zn-BDC) Coated Magnetic Montmorillonite

Jian Shen,Nan Wang,Yang Guang Wang,Di Yu,Xiao–kun Ouyang

Composite adsorption materials combine the advantages of various adsorptive materials and compensate for the defects of single adsorbents. Magnetic montmorillonite (MMMT) shows good adsorption properties for Pb(II). In order to further improve the adsorption properties of MMMT, in this work, Zn-BDC, a kind of metal–organic framework (MOF), was modified onto the surface of MMMT by in situ polymerization. The composite material MMMT@Zn-BDC was characterized by Zetasizer, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM, and XPS. The influence of adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of MMMT@Zn-BDC for Pb(II) was examined, including the adsorbent dosage, pH of Pb(II) solution, initial concentration of Pb(II), and the temperature and adsorption time. Also, the adsorption mechanism was studied. The results of this study show that MMMT@Zn-BDC adsorbs Pb(II) via chemisorption. In addition, MMMT@Zn-BDC exhibits good potential for adsorbing Pb(II), including its high adsorption capacity (724.64 mg/g) and good recyclability.Keywords:Zn-BDC;magnetic montmorillonite;Pb(II);adsorption

Effect of Pb(II) on hydraulic behavior and microstructure evolution of activated charcoal-bentonite-reticulated red clay barrier

Gao Yuhao,Li Jianzhong,Yang Zhongping,Li Xuyong,Wang Zhitao

The sanitary landfill method remains the primary disposal of municipal waste in developing countries. Effective landfill barriers in intercepting pollutants are warranted to avoid soil and groundwater contamination by leachate leakage from those landfills that threaten human health. This work focuses on enhancing the capability of reticulated red clay barriers to intercept Pb(II) by incorporating activated charcoal and bentonite. The impacts of additives on the hydraulic behavior and Pb(II) blocking efficacy of composite reticulated red clay were explored through hydraulic conductivity and leachate concentration tests, respectively. The microstructural evolution of barrier materials was revealed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. Results suggest that the formulated activated charcoal-bentonite-reticulated red clay composite barrier exhibited significantly better performance than those with the additives individually. The permeability coefficient and Pb(II) leachate concentration of the activated charcoal-bentonite-reticulated red clay barrier with 5% activated charcoal, 16% bentonite, and 79% reticulated red clay were found to be 13.20% and 23.97% of pure reticulated red clay, respectively. The pore size distribution (PSD) curve indicates that the activated charcoal -bentonite-reticulated red clay barrier contains only nanoscale pores. In addition, the activated charcoal and bentonite in the composite barrier form a tortuous network structure that binds the clay aggregates together. This results in more intricate flow paths, enhancing adsorption and ion exchange effects, ultimately reducing hydraulic conductivity and improving the barrier’s ability to intercept contaminants.

Highly effective Pb(II) adsorption using physical–chemical double crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-coated nano-calcium carbonate aerogel beads

Yao Feng,Wenwen Liu,Chaoqun Mu,Lvling Zhong,Zhixian He,Liang Zhang,Juanqin Xue

Several issues plague polymer and calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) composites, including the tendency of CaCO 3 particles to aggregate and detach easily, as well as a limited number of adsorption sites. To address the aforementioned issues, a novel large-particle hollow shell-structured PVA-encapsulated nano-CaCO 3 aerogel (PCC) was prepared. The characterization results indicate that the PCC (∼3 mm) possess a three-dimensional network structure with a stereoscopic arrangement of big and small pores. The adsorption of Pb(II) adheres to pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics and the adsorption equilibrium follows the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 482.85 mg/g at 313 K for Pb(II). The PCC exhibits good selectivity and stability of adsorption towards Pb(II), retaining 92.6 % of its initial adsorption capacity after seven cycles. The large-particle morphology of this material demonstrates significant potential for effectively removing Pb(II) in wastewater treatment applications.

Controllable Synthesis of Monolayer Poly(acrylic acid) on the Channel Surface of Mesoporous Alumina for Pb(II) Adsorption

Ya-Ping Wang,Peng Zhou,Shi-Zhong Luo,Xue-Pin Liao,Bin Wang,Qian Shao,Xingkui Guo,Zhanhu Guo

Polymer/inorganic nanocomposites exhibit special properties due to highly intimate interactions between organic and inorganic phases and thus have been deployed for various applications. Among them, nanocomposites with monolayer polymer coverage on the inorganic surface demonstrate the highest efficiency for applications. However, the controllable synthesis of the polymer monolayer in mesopores of inorganic substrates remains a challenge. In this study, poly(acrylic acid)/γ-alumina nanocomposites (PAA/alumina) were synthesized via the in situ polymerization of acrylic acid impregnated in mesopores of alumina. By applying the preneutralization of monomers, the polymerization was found to be highly controllable in generating monolayer PAA coverage. The formation of monolayers was verified by thermogravimetry, semiquantitative Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption, and Pb(II) adsorption. Alternatively, the organic loadings of PAA/alumina composite samples could be controlled in the range of 0.2 to 1.0 equiv of monolayer, together with the linearly correlated metal ion adsorption capacity. As calculated by the complexation model, one Pb(II) is combined with two carboxylate groups of PAA. The formation of the monolayer polymer inside mesoporous oxide channels represents a method for the development of highly promising functional nanocomposites.

A new nFe@ZIF-8 for the removal of Pb(II) from wastewater by selective adsorption and reduction

Long Zhou,Na Li,Xiaoying Jin,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

A n Fe@ZIF-8 composite, which combined the tailorable porosity of ZIF-8 with the versatile functionality of Fe nanoparticles ( n Fe), was synthesized for Pb(II) removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that more than 95.3% of Pb(II) was removed from aqueous solution at an initial concentration of 50 mg L −1 when using n Fe@ZIF-8 within 60 min at pH value of 5. The mechanism of Pb(II) removal was studied via characterization of changes the morphology, size and composition of in n Fe@ZIF-8 before and after exposure the solutions containing Pb(II). Specifically, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) indicated that n Fe@ZIF-8 was successfully synthesized and also remained stable after Pb(II) removal. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Scanning electron microscopy-X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) both confirmed that Pb(II) was partially adhered onto the surface of n Fe@ZIF-8, where X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) specifically revealed the existence of Pb(0) on the surface. This indicated that Pb(II) was initially adsorbed onto the surface of n Fe@ZIF-8 and subsequently reduced to Pb(0). Moreover, Pb(II) removal fit well to kinetics of absorption and reduction. Finally, in practice, n Fe@ZIF-8 could remove 96.3% of Pb(II) from an electroplating wastewater.

Robust fabrication of pyrogallol-conjugated dextran hydrogel as antioxidant hemo-adsorbent for the selective adsorption of Pb(II)

Yu Du,Yaqi Xu,Jiongrui Hou,Xueling Li,Jing Yang,Jingqin Yang,Shaoyun Shan,Chengxiao Wang,Hongying Su

Adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, selectivity, and antioxidant activity are crucial to enhance the efficacy and prognosis of hemoperfusion treatments for patients with lead poisoning. This study presents the development of polyphenol-analogous dextran hydrogels (PYG@Dex) with abundant chemically conjugated pyrogallol (PYG) groups on their networks, which were prepared by Hantzsch cross-linking reaction involving the formation of 1,4-dihydropyridine from acetoacetylated dextran, 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzaldehyde, and NH 4 OAc. The resulting PYG@Dex hydrogel exhibited superior biocompatibility and robust antioxidant capabilities, achieving a free radical scavenging rate of over 90 %. Notably, the hydrogel with high PYG content displayed an outstanding adsorption capacity of 102.35 mg·g −1 for Pb 2+ ions, due to the coordination interactions with PYG and β -ketoester groups. The adsorption affinity of PYG@Dex for Pb 2+ ions was confirmed in the presence of biologically-relevant metal ions (K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ) in both aqueous solutions and simulated plasma. These findings underscore the potential of PYG-conjugated hydrogels to address the challenges of selective heavy metal removal from blood through hemoperfusion and to provide additional protection against heavy metal-induced oxidative stress responses.

Immobilization nitrogen-doped sodium alginate-derived carbon quantum dots on sodium alginate hydrogel for enhanced Pb(II) removal

Yu Li,Yuxin Xu,Jiayu Zhu,Xianghui Meng,Shuang Ai,Meiling Zhang,Fan Yang,Huabing Yin,Kui Cheng

Heavy metal contamination, particularly from Pb(II), poses severe environmental and health risks due to its toxicity and persistence in ecosystems. This study presents an innovative and sustainable adsorbent composed of nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs), derived from sodium alginate and immobilized on a sodium alginate hydrogel (HL-NCDs), for the efficient extraction of Pb(II) from water. The experimental results indicate that Pb N and Pb C interactions, particularly involving the N H moieties within the carbon quantum dots, are the predominant mechanisms facilitating Pb(II) removal, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These interactions are substantiated by thermodynamic analyses and charge distribution studies, which highlight the enhanced affinity of HL-NCDs towards Pb(II) ions. The novel HL-NCDs composite material not only demonstrates excellent Pb(II) adsorption efficiency but also suggests broad applicability in water treatment technologies, marking a significant advancement in the use of biomass-derived materials for environmental remediation.

Mesoporous MCM-41 supported amorphous MnLa oxides for selective removal of As(V), Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Qing Nie,Yu Sun,Dongxu Xue,Jianwei Fan,Wei-xian Zhang

The coexistence of oxyanion-type and cationic heavy metals in complex aqueous systems poses a significant challenge for adsorption-based remediation. Herein, mesoporous silica-supported manganese‑lanthanum mixed oxides (Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41) were synthesized via an oxidation-coprecipitation strategy. The mesoporous silica framework effectively confined amorphous Mn/La oxides, suppressing oxide aggregation and manganese leaching. The as-prepared Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41 materials exhibited efficient removal of heavy metals, with maximum adsorption capacities of 57.3 mg g −1 for As(V), 141.6 mg g −1 for Cd(II), and 333.0 mg g −1 for Pb(II). By adjusting the Mn/La molar ratio, the adsorption behavior toward different metal species could be systematically regulated, with La-enriched compositions favoring As(V) uptake and Mn-rich materials exhibiting enhanced affinity toward Cd(II) and Pb(II). High removal efficiencies for all three heavy metals were maintained under multicomponent coexisting conditions. The composition-dependent adsorption behavior reflects a functional differentiation of Mn- and La-associated surface sites, enabling the simultaneous immobilization of oxyanion and cationic contaminants. Overall, this work demonstrates that integrating mesoporous confinement with compositional regulation provides an effective strategy for constructing stable and multifunctional adsorbents for multicomponent heavy-metal remediation.
