Silent-region SERS detection of fatigue biomarkers based on Au@PB core-shell nanoprobes

Chuanyu Liu,Guangda Xu,Jiangheng Fan,Boya Chen,Lefa Zhao

Au@PB core-shell nanoprobes exploit the Raman silent region (2150 cm −1 ). • Signal-off SERS evades biological-matrix background in complex serum. • GOx/LOx cascades let one Au@PB reporter assay H 2 O 2 , glucose, lactate. • Detection limits reach 4.2 × 10 −10 to 1.17 × 10 −8  M for three analytes. • 91.4–106.6% serum recovery supports exercise-fatigue biomarker monitoring. Assaying exercise-related biochemical markers is important for elucidating the mechanisms of exercise metabolism and fatigue. However, conventional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques are often limited by biological matrix background interference and fingerprint-region spectral overlap in complex biological fluids. To overcome these limitations, this study constructs a signal-off-type parallel SERS detection platform based on Au@PB core-shell nanostructures. The core design of the platform leverages the characteristic peak of the Prussian blue (PB) shell located in the Raman silent region (2150 cm −1 , C N stretching vibration) to avoid biological matrix background interference, and employs a signal-off mechanism in which hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) triggers the quantitative attenuation of the PB silent-region peak intensity, enabling the same PB shell to function as both a SERS reporting unit and an H 2 O 2 -responsive unit. On this basis, H 2 O 2 , glucose (Glu), and lactate (LA) share a single signal-off-type Au@PB reporting molecule: H 2 O 2 directly triggers this attenuation, whereas Glu and LA are in situ converted into H 2 O 2 through enzymatic cascades of glucose oxidase (GOx) and lactate oxidase (LOx), respectively, which then triggers the same attenuation, thereby enabling three-target parallel analysis from a single reporter. Under optimized conditions, the platform exhibits good linearity and high sensitivity for H 2 O 2 (R 2  = 0.9953, LOD = 4.2 × 10 −10  M), Glu (R 2  = 0.9968, LOD = 3.76 × 10 −9  M), and LA (R 2  = 0.9977, LOD = 1.17 × 10 −8  M). The relative standard deviation (RSD) across 20 parallel samples is 2.8%–4.4%, and the spiked recoveries in real serum samples remain stable at 91.4%–106.6%. This anti-interference parallel analysis strategy provides a methodological basis for monitoring fatigue-related biochemical changes in real serum and demonstrates the distinctive advantages of silent-region SERS in complex biological matrix sensing. UiO-66 based electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Yanan Ding,Feng Wei,Changchang Dong,Jiadong Li,Chang Zhang,Xiaojun Han

Heavy metal ion pollution has been a potential threat to human health. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor for simultaneously detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) was developed using a metal–organic framework material UiO-66. UiO-66 before and after carbonization was used to modify the GCE electrodes, respectively. The carbonized UiO-66 modified GCE electrode (CUiO-66/Bi/GCE) showed good detection ability with the linear detection range of 10–50 μg/L and detection limit of 1.16 and 1.14 μg/L for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Compared with UiO-66, carbonized UiO-66 provided more active sites for Bi ions and heavy metal ions to co-deposit and facilitated the electron transfer, leading to better detection performance. The decoration strategy was applied to disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) to obtain the linear detection range of 20–120 μg/L and detection limit of 4.67 and 1.24 μg/L for Cd(II) and Pb(II) respectively. The prepared electrochemical sensors hold great potential in real water sample detections.

Removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions by modified polyvinyl alcohol

Jiang Haiyan,Zhao Qiuxiang,Zeng Ying

In this study, modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was prepared and characterized by element analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and surface area and proximity analysis. The isotherms and thermodynamic parameters of the modified PVA adsorption process were estimated. The data indicate that the adsorption process is exothermic, feasible, spontaneous, and fit to the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cd(II) and Pb(II) were calculated to be 1.19 and 1.48 mmol/g, respectively. Sorption was rapid, with the removal percentage higher than 98% after 10 min. Adsorption behavior mechanisms were analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, which were highly fitted to pseudo-second-order model. This suggests the main adsorption mechanism is a chemical adsorption, involving ion exchange and valence forces through sharing or exchange of electrons between metal ions and modified PVA. The modified PVA is a good reusable sorbent, enhancing the economics of practical application for the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from water and wastewater.

Enhancing catalytic H2 generation by surface electronic tuning of systematically controlled Pt-Pb nanocrystals

E Bin,Huang Bolong,Zhang Nan,Shao Qi,Li Yujing,Huang Xiaoqing

Although many previous studies have shown that the shape-control of nanocrystal (NCs) is an efficient strategy to improve the catalytic performance, these syntheses were conducted under very different conditions, which are not suitable for the shape-dependent properties studies as well as catalysis optimization. Herein, we demonstrate an effective method for the selective synthesis of well-defined PtPb NCs in a highly controllable manner. Four distinct PtPb NCs, namely PtPb peanut nanocrystals, PtPb hexagonal nanoplates, PtPb octahedra nanocrystals (ONCs) and PtPb nanoparticles have been selectively prepared in the presence of different phenols. Significantly, we found that the created PtPb NCs/C shows the shape-dependent activity with the optimized PtPb ONCs/C being the most active for the ethanol reforming to H 2 , 22.4 times higher than the commercial Pt/C. The high performance of PtPb ONCs/C has been also successfully expanded into other polyhydric alcohols reformings. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals that the high Pt(0)/Pt(II) ratio in PtPb NCs/C enhances the alcohols reforming. The density functional theory (DFT) studies show the PtPb ONCs possess the highest surface averaged electronic occupation for unit Pt-atom, matching well with XPS results. The PtPb ONCs/C also displays excellent durability with limited activity decay and negligible structure/composition changes after ten cycles. This work demonstrates an important advance in the high-level control of metallic nanostructures to tune the catalytic activities.

Bismuth Entrapped in Mesoporous Carbon for the Simultaneous Measurement of Pb, Cd and Zn

Hu Xin,Miao Yuqing,Zhou Shilin,Liang Xiaocai

Here we report a Bi/mesoporous carbon modified glass carbon electrode (Bi-MC-GCE) for the detection of heavy metal ions Zn, Cd and Pb. Bi(NO3)3 was firstly entrapped into the holes of MCs by sonicating them together in solution. Then the dispersed mixture was pipetted onto the surface of GCE and left to dry. Bi(NO3)3 in the holes of MCs was reduced to metallic Bi during the process of deposition for square wave stripping analysis. The obtained Bi-MC-GCE exhibits significantly enhanced sensitivity for Zn, Cd and Pb detection compared to blank GCE, bismuth or MC alone modified GCE, which is attributed to the high specific surface area of MCs and the increased amount of entrapped bismuth as active sites for the deposition and stripping of heavy metal ions. A linearship is observed for the concentration of Zn, Cd, and Pb from 10 to 110 ppb. The relative standard deviation was 3.7% for Zn, 3% for Cd and 8% for Pb at the 90 ppb level (n = 3). The suggested Bi-MC-GCE exhibits a potential application for real water sample analysis.

Polyethersulfone enwrapped hydrous zirconium oxide nanoparticles for efficient removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Guoping Wei,Junwen Qi,Peng Lin,Shunlong Pan,Xiuyun Sun,Jinyou Shen,Weiqing Han,Lianjun Wang,Jiansheng Li

Porous matrix immobilization is considered as an effective approach to address the engineering challenges during practical application of nanoadsorbent. In this work, solid and hollow hydrous Zirconium (IV) oxide (ZrO 2 ·nH 2 O, SHZO and HHZO) nanoparticles were enwrapped into millimeter-level beads by polyethersulfone through a mild liquid-liquid phase inversion technique. The beads possess asymmetric and hierarchical structure with an exterior porous surface dense layer and numerous inner interpenetrating finger-like channels, which promote the transportation of molecule and prevent the leaching of nanoadsorbents. As compared to SHZO beads, HHZO beads exhibited higher efficient adsorption capacity toward Pb (II) (104 mg·g −1 ), which could remain at 94% of HHZO nanoparticles. The effects of pH, the stability of adsorbents and coexisting ionic are further explored in detail. The Pb (II) removal mechanism is further studied by the EDS mapping, XPS, FTIR measurements, further indicating the surface hydroxyl groups played a key role in the adsorption process. Fixed-bed column sorption experiment and in situ regeneration were conducted so as to examine the practical application of the beads. Therefore, this kind of beads indicated the potential practical application in industrial wastewater treatment.

Fan Zhang,Hua Hao,Minghe Cao,Zhonghua Yao,Shuai Fu,Hanxing Liu

Piezoelectric ceramics with excellent piezoelectric properties and a high Curie temperature are important for numerous electromechanical devices in a broad range of temperature environments. In this work, the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Yb1/2Nb1/2)O3end member was selected to be introduced into a BiScO3-PbTiO3high-temperature piezoelectric ceramic to reduce the dielectric loss and improve the piezoelectric properties while slightly reducing the Curie temperature. The phase structure and dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of 0.025Pb(Yb1/2Nb1/2)O3-(0.975−x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3(0.60 ≤x≤ 0.63) ceramics were systematically analyzed, and the best electrical properties were observed in the morphotropic phase boundary regionx= 0.61 withd33= 370 pC/N,kp= 44%,Pr= 33.9 μC/cm2. Importantly, no significant depolarization was observed in thex= 0.61 ceramic from room temperature to 290 °C, demonstrating its good thermal stability and potential applications in a wide range of temperature environments.

Regulating steric hindrance in difunctionalized porous aromatic frameworks for the selective separation of Pb(II)

Xuan Ding,Jiayi Liu,Hui Shi,Zhou Yi,Lei Zhou,Wei Ren,Penghui Shao,Liming Yang,Derun Zhao,Yun Wei,Xubiao Luo

Efficient and selective removal of Pb(II) from wastewater with complex matrix remains a challenging task. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with predesigned functional building blocks provide a favorable platform for the selective separation of Pb(II). Herein, the bifunctional SPAFs with the introduction of -OH and -SO 3 H were synthesized through rationally optimizing their steric hindrance. As a result, the SPAF-0.75 exhibits favorable adsorption capacity of Pb(II) (212.34 mg g −1 ), which is 22 times larger than pristine framework. Competition experiment indicates that SPAF-0.75 possess the selective removal of Pb(II) without interfering from co-existing metal ions. The removal rate of SPAF-0.75 still retain at 100% after six successive cycles. The DFT calculation illustrates that -OH and -SO 3 H are co-participate in the process of capturing Pb(II), revealing SPAF-0.75 preferred removal of Pb(II) owing to the lowest adsorption energy (Δ E ab  = −3.99 eV). This study extend the understanding of the structure-property relationship and facilitate new possibilities for PAFs.

Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic Acid (DPTA)-modified Magnetic Cellulose Nanocrystals can Efficiently Remove Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution

Shen Jian,Jiang Fangyuan,Wang Nan,Ouyang Xiao–kun,Jin Mi-cong

Surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is essential for improving their reactivity and adsorption capacity. Oxidation, as a conventional modification method of CNC, has strong reaction conditions, which may partially destroy the structure of CNCs. Herein, we propose a mild cellulose modification method, in which diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DPTA) was grafted onto CNC with an aminosilane coupling agent. To facilitate the enrichment and recovery of adsorbents, we prepared magnetic CNC before grafting DPTA, and finally obtained magnetic carboxylic functionalized CNC (MCNC-DPTA). The effects of the reaction parameters on the adsorption process were systematically studied by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Vibration sample magnetometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the effects of the solution pH, the initial concentration of Pb, and the adsorption time on the adsorption properties of the materials were evaluated. Furthermore, the structure, morphology, and thermal properties of the solution were systematically studied. After 6 cycle tests, the adsorption amount of Pb(II) by MCNC-DPTA was only reduced by 7%. These results show that MCNC-DPTA is an environment-friendly adsorption material with an excellent Pb(II) removal effect.

High-Performance PB-KZnHCF Electrochromic Devices Enabled by a Synergistic K+/Zn2+ Dual-Ion Electrolyte

Xiaoqian Tan,Yiyue Luo,Zehao Yu,Menghan Li,Chao Wang,Tingxin Ma,Wei Liu,Fuyi Jiang,Litao Kang

A K⁺/Zn²⁺ dual-ion electrolyte is proposed to suppress dissolution and stabilize KZnHCF counter electrodes. • The electrolyte ensures high electrochemical activity for both the PB working electrode and the KZnHCF counter electrode. • The optimized PB-KZnHCF device achieves a large optical modulation, fast switching speed, and excellent cycling stability. KZnHCF (K 2 Zn 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 ), a typical Prussian blue analog (PBAs), exhibits high transparency regardless of the redox states, making it an ideal transparent counter electrode material for electrochromic devices. However, its cycling durability is seriously limited by stability issues deriving from material dissolution. In this work, we propose a K + /Zn 2+ dual-cation electrolyte to enhance the cycling durability of KZnHCF by changing the Zn 2+ dissolution equilibrium between the electrolyte and the electrode. This electrolyte formulation is also compatible with the Prussian Blue (PB) electrochromic electrodes, enabling excellent electrochromic performance. Based on these merits, a high-performance electrochromic device is constructed by pairing the PB working electrode with the KZnHCF counter electrode in the K + /Zn 2+ electrolyte. This device demonstrates a desirable optical modulation of 52.7% at 633 nm with a coloration and bleaching response time of 5 and 14 s, respectively. After 1000 cycles, 77.8% of the initial optical modulation retains, indicating a decent cycling stability. This work underscores the promise of electrolyte engineering in addressing stability challenges of electrodes, offering a viable pathway to improve the performance of Prussian blue (PB)-based electrochromic devices. Quantitative contribution of dissolution-driven precipitation to Pb(II) removal by biochars during adsorption process

Sikandar Anila,Zhao Jing,Ahmad Shakeel,Chu Gang,Pan Bo,Chang Zhaofeng,Liu Yang,Wu Danping,Rashid Audil

Biochar (BC) has been widely used for the lead (Pb(II)) immobilization in soil remediation. However, the mechanisms of dissolution-driven removal of Pb(II) by BC are still poorly understood. Herein, Pb(II) removal was investigated by differentiating BC- and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-systems. As per the kinetics and isotherms, Pb(II) removal ranged from 31.11% to 80.92% in BC-system. This removal process was significantly influenced by dissolution-driven precipitation which contributed from 23.42% to 84.03% in DOC-system. During Pb(II) removal, an obvious reduction was observed in the released inorganic anions including carbonate (CO 3 2− ), sulfate (SO 4 2− ), and phosphate (PO 4 3− ). The CO 3 2− was a predominant contributor to facilitate Pb(II) precipitation. X-ray diffraction further confirmed the formation of cerussite (PbCO 3 ) and anglesite (PbSO 4 ) on BC surface after Pb(II) removal. Moreover, the decreased fluorescence responses of humic-like and fulvic-like substances were detected in DOC-system with the addition of Pb(II). At the same anion concentration, the enhanced Pb(II) amount was removed with increasing DOC concentration from 1 mg·L − 1 to 5 mg·L − 1 . These results indicated that released DOC exerted a significant contribution on Pb(II) precipitation due to its coagulation effect. This research provides mechanistic insights into the contributions of adsorption and dissolution-driven precipitation in overall Pb(II) removal through BC application.

Additive Engineering for High-Performance Two-Dimensional Dion–Jacobson Pb–Sn Alloyed Perovskite Solar Cells

Hongxi Shi,Lei Zhang,Hao Huang,Yali Ou,Xiaoting Wang,Ziyu Li,Dan Chi,Shihua Huang

Two-dimensional perovskite materials attract great attentions for the application of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to the regulable bandgap and high stability. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2D PSCs is far behind in that of three-dimensional PSCs. Herein, Dion–Jacobson (DJ) phase Pb–Sn perovskite of (PhDMA)MA 4 (Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 ) 5 I 16 in 2D PSCs is introduced, which has suitable bandgap of 1.27 eV and offers the candidate for the absorber of bottom device in all perovskite tandem solar cells. The nonlinear bandgap behavior of 2D Pb–Sn perovskite materials is certified by adjusting the recipe of precursors to vary the bandgap of perovskite films. Moreover, MACl is employed to improve the film quality of 2D Pb–Sn perovskite, leading to the suppression of the defect density and nonradiative recombination for 2D PSCs. As a result, a high PCE of 12.2% is achieved for DJ phase 2D Pb–Sn PSCs.
