Magnetic ion-imprinted and –SH functionalized polymer for selective removal of Pb(II) from aqueous samples

Bin Guo,Fang Deng,Yu Zhao,Xubiao Luo,Shenglian Luo,Chaktong Au

A magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP) functionalized with –SH groups for the selective removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous samples was synthesized by surface imprinting technique combined with a sol–gel process using 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane as monomer, tetraethyl orthosilicate as cross-linking agent, and Pb(II) ion as template. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP showed higher capacity and selectivity than that of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NIP. The effects of initial concentration of Pb(II) and pH of medium on adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP were studied. The experimental data fits well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum Pb(II)-sorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm is 32.58   mg/g and 16.50   mg/g for Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NIP, respectively. Kinetics studies show that the adsorption process obeys a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with high correlation coefficient ( R 2   =   0.9982). The separation factor of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP for Pb(II)/Cu(II), Pb(II)/Zn(II), and Pb(II)/Co(II) are 50.54, 52.14, and 37.39, respectively. The adsorption thermodynamic parameters Δ G , Δ H and Δ S were −4.98   kJ/mol, 3.27   kJ/mol and 28.84   J/mol/K, respectively. In addition, the spent Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP can be refreshed by simple washing with aqueous HCl solution, and there is no significant decrease in adsorption capacity after a test of up to five cycles, demonstrating that the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP is stable and reusable.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from fish sauce using carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal: Isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

Nan Wang,Ru-Na Jin,A.M. Omer,Xiao-kun Ouyang

In the present study, a new adsorbent based on carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal (CCN) was developed for the adsorption of Pb(II) from fish sauce. The prepared adsorbent material was characterized by zeta potential, FT-IR, XRD, and XPS tools. The changes in the morphological structure of the developed CCN surface were evidenced by SEM and TEM. The favorable adsorption conditions were selected by studying the contact time, initial concentration, temperature, and concentration of the used glutamic acid and NaCl. The results indicated that the Langmuir isotherm model agrees very well with experimental adsorption data ( R 2   =   0.9962) with a maximum adsorption capacity 232.56   mg/g of Pb(II) at 293.2   K. Additionally, data of the adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order kinetics ( R 2   >   0.9990). On the other hand, the thermodynamics studies show that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the developed CCN could be regenerated using acid treatment with a good reusability for Pb(II) adsorption. The results clearly indicated that the synthesized CCN could be effectively applied as a new material for Pb(II) adsorption from fish sauce solutions.

Adsorption of As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) from Wastewater by Sodium Alginate Modified Materials

Hongchuan Li,Rui Jin,Hongxiang Hu,Yusef Kianpoor Kalkhajeh,Yingying Zhao,Yue Gao,Borui Zhang

Sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl oxide (PEO), and ceramic nanomaterials were used to prepare alginate composite gel. The present study examined the removal rate and adsorption capacity of alginate composite gel for removal of wastewater As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II). Batch experiments were conducted to study the influence of experimental parameters such as pH and temperature, as well as the mechanism of As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) adsorption with the new adsorbent. The results showed the high efficiency of sodium alginate composite gel for removal of wastewater As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II). Under the condition of the best liquid-solid ratio and the contact time, the removal rates of As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) were 67.42%, 95.31%, and 93.96%, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic equation was superior to fit the adsorption kinetics process. The isothermal adsorption models of As(III) and Pb(II) fitted well with the Freundlich model, and Zn(II) fitted well with the Langmuir model. The results of SEM, EDS, XPS, and FTIR analyses revealed that the adsorption process occurred mainly via chemisorption. The results of the present study suggest that new adsorbents can be effectively utilized for As(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) removal from water.

Novel Zn-Fe engineered kiwi branch biochar for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Yuehui Tan,Xirui Wan,Ting Zhou,Le Wang,Xianqiang Yin,Aisheng Ma,Nong Wang

In this study, a novel adsorbent made from kiwi branch biochar modified with Zn-Fe (KB/Zn-Fe) was compared with original biochar to the Pb(II)'s adsorptivity from waste water. The adsorbent was synthetized by liquid-phase deposition. Batches of sorption tests were performed, and the biochars' representative properties were tested. Characterizations revealed the physicochemical properties of biochars and showed that the KB/Zn-Fe composites were successfully synthesized. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were proven to satisfactorily fit the original biochar and KB/Zn-Fe. The KB/Zn-Fe showed Langmuir maximum adsorption ability to Pb (II) in aqueous solution of 161.29 mg g -1 , compared with 36.76 mg g -1 for original biochar. The adsorption ability of Pb(II) decreased and the Pb(II) removal efficiency increased with increasing biochar dose. The effect of co-existence of NO 3 - to the absorptive capacity of KB/Zn-Fe on Pb(II) was unremarkable, but Cl - could increase the absorptive capacity. Multiple Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms by KB/Zn-Fe include surface precipitation of metal hydroxides, complexation with active functional groups and ion-exchange. This work provides guidance for future production of biochar with efficient adsorption ability, which could be used to remove Pb(II) ions from wastewater.

Hierarchical 13X zeolite/reduced graphene oxide porous material for trace Pb (II) capturing from drinking water

Yanzhao Shi,Xueying Ren,Hong Zheng,Yu Zhang,Qi Zuo

The removal of lead in drinking water has attracted considerable attention of researchers in recent years, especially, the trace characteristic of lead is a challenge to water treatment. Herein, 13X zeolite/reduced graphene oxide composite material (13X-rGO) with hierarchically porous structure was successfully prepared using graphene oxide (GO) and 13X zeolite via a chemical reduction method and presented great performance for removing trace Pb(II) from drinking water. The influence of some important parameters including adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial lead concentration, coexisting competing ions, solution pH value, etc. on the removal of Pb(II) was systematically investigated. The composite material showed better adsorption properties compared with a single component and their physical mixture, confirming the synergistic effect of rGO and 13X zeolite on Pb(II) adsorption. The effluent lead concentration could be decreased to the level permitted by World Health Organization (WHO) (<10 ppb) within 30 s under calcium content of 20 ppm and initial lead concentration of 150 ppb. Simultaneously, the as-prepared 13X-rGO performed excellent adsorption capacity meeting WHO standard (6.07 mg/g), which was about 2.23 times that of single 13X zeolite (2.72 mg/g). In the presence of interfering ions, the lead concentration could still be reduced to safe drinking water standard. Moreover, the adsorbent could be effectively regenerated by saturated sodium chloride solution. Therefore, 13X-rGO can be introduced as a promising adsorption material for the purification of drinking water contaminated with trace lead owing to rapid adsorption, low cost and recycling potential.

Concave polymer nano-container as a bifunctional adsorbent for extraction of As(III) and Pb(II)

Yueyang Wang,Fangfen Jing,Mingzhu Jin,Weiwei Lu,Shanshan Zeng,Yaling Zeng,Jianchao Xie,Rongtai Yu

Adsorption is recognized as a cost-effective, efficient, and versatile method for the treatment of heavy metal pollution, offering environmentally friendly solutions. The development of highly efficient and selective adsorbent materials is essential, with functional groups such as sulfhydryl and amine groups playing a crucial role in the effectiveness and selectivity of adsorption processes. Polymer-based materials have emerged as a promising class of selective adsorbents due to their naturally occurring amine groups. In this study, a bifunctional adsorbent with a concave morphology was developed by grafting sulfhydryl groups to selectively adsorb As(III) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Maximum adsorption capacities for As(III) and Pb(II) were found to be 165.51 mg g −1 and 62.38 mg g −1 , respectively, at an optimum dosage of 0.05 mg mL −1 and an original concentration of 20 mg L −1 for both metals. Notably, the concave spheres exhibited superior morphology advantages for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption compared to hollow and solid polymers, with adsorption capacities 1.8 times higher than hollow polymers and 3.7 times higher than solid spheres for As(III) adsorption, and 3.4 times higher than solid spheres for Pb(II) adsorption. Mechanistic studies revealed that the selective capture of As(III) was primarily attributed to the proposed reaction routes between As(III) and -SH groups. Isothermal models, including Langmuir and Freundlich, suggested that monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces may dominate for As(III), while multilayer adsorption is favored for Pb(II) extraction.

Solidification performance and mechanism of C-S-H gel for Pb(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II)

Baomin Wang,Weigao Ding,Chengcheng Fan,Fei Liu,Wenxin Lu,Haoxiang Yang

C-S-H gel is a complex cementitious system, and the properties present significant difference with various Ca/Si ratios. The immobilization mechanism of three heavy metals in C-S-H gel at various Ca/Si ratios was investigated in this work from the prospect of the physical adsorption and chemical immobilization. Results showed that higher Ca/Si ratios can result in an increase in silicon chain polymerization, and lower BET specific area, and C-S-H gel with various Ca/Si ratios showed the excellent immobilization for heavy metals. Pb(II) and Zn(II) can form hydroxyl complex polyhedra in C-S-H under strongly alkaline environments, and increase the silicon chain polymerization degree similar to the doping of C-S-H gel by Al. However, Cd(II) was immobilized in the C-S-H gel with the formation of a solid solution under the action of ion exchange with Ca(II), rather than in the form of hydroxyl complex polyhedral and cadmium hydroxide coprecipitates. The highest adsorption capacity of Pb(II) was realized in C-S-H gel with a Ca/Si molar ratio of 0.9, reaching 95.6006 mg/g. Pb(II) was mainly immobilized in C-S-H gel via physical and chemical adsorption, and the effect of chemical adsorption tended to be significant as the Ca/Si molar ratio increased. And the formation of Pb 8 Ca(Si 2 O 7 ) 3 can be detected in C-S-H gel with a higher Ca/Si molar ratio.

Electrochemical Detection of Pb(II) Ions in Aqueous Solution by Carbon Nanospheres Modified Boron-Doped Diamond Electrode

Wang Nan,Li Jiaqi,Ma Yitian,Xu Ahua,Tao Huajin,Huang Baoyu,Hao Song,Liao Jianjun,Lin Shiwei,Tang Yipeng,Hou Ying,Bian Chao,Li Xiaogan

In this paper, a sensor using carbon nanospheres modified boron-doped diamond (CNs/BDD) electrode for detecting heavy metal ions rapidly in aqueous solution is studied. The CNs/BDD electrode is characterized systematically by techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical properties of the CNs/BDD electrode, BDD electrode and Au electrode are compared by cyclic voltammetry. It is found that the CNs/BDD electrode has more negative hydrogen evolution potential, a wider potential window and a larger effective electrode area, which is conducive to the accurate detection of heavy metal ions. The square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is applied to assess and quantify the sensing capability of the CNs/BDD electrode. The effects of deposition potential, deposition time and other experimental parameters on the detection performance are studied. Under the optimal experimental conditions, CNs/BDD electrodes exhibit remarkable detection capabilities for lead (Pb(II) ions, in which a linear relationship within the concentration range from 1 to 140 µg/L with a 0.9994 correlation coefficient is obtained. Meanwhile, it has excellent repeatability with a low relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.57%, and the achieved actual limit of detection (LOD) reaches 0.01 µg/L. In addition, the interference experiment results show that except for Cd(II) ions and Cu(II) ions, other common ions in water have little interference to Pb(II) ion detection. The Pb(II) ions recovery rates are 89.1–115.7% in the real water samples. Experimental analysis indicates that the CNs/BDD electrode possesses the advantages of low detection limit, short detection time, and simple experimental equipment, which meets the requirements of Pb(II) ions field detection.

Highly Sensitive and Selective Fluorescence “Turn-On” Detection of Pb (II) Based on Fe3O4@Au–FITC Nanocomposite

Yina Cai,Binxue Ren,Chifang Peng,Cunzheng Zhang,Xinlin Wei

New nanocomposites, Fe3O4@Au–FITC, were prepared and explored to develop a fluorescent detection of Pb2+. The Fe3O4@AuNPs–FITC nanocomposites could be etched by Pb2+in the presence of Na2S2O3, leading to fluorescence recovery of FITC quenched by Fe3O4@Au nanocomposites. With the increase of Pb2+concentration, the fluorescence recovery of Fe3O4@AuNPs–FITC increased gradually. Under optimized conditions, a detection limit of 5.2 nmol/L of Pb2+with a linear range of 0.02–2.0 µmol/L were obtained. The assay demonstrated negligible response to common metal ions. Recoveries of 98.2–106.4% were obtained when this fluorescent method was applied in detecting Pb2+spiked in a lake-water sample. The above results demonstrated the high potential of ion-induced nanomaterial etching in developing robust fluorescent assays. Keywords:gold nanoparticles;magnetic nanoparticles;FRET;nanomaterial etching;lead ions

Polyethyleneimine-derived dithiocarbamates for Pb(II) stabilization in MSWI fly ash leachate: Mechanisms, stability and economic assessment

Jinfeng Tang,Yanyan Li,Xinmei Lin,Minhua Su,Lizhi Tong,Yun Zhu,Biming Chen,Benhua Liao,Małgorzata Szlachta,Kaimin Shih,Junhua Xu

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is hazardous due to its high heavy metal content, particularly Pb, which is highly mobile and poses significant health risks. This study synthesized polyethyleneimine-derived dithiocarbamates (PDTCs) with multiple sulfur-containing functional groups for chelation-based Pb(II) stabilization in MSWI fly ash leachate-related systems. The dissolved Pb(II) removal efficiency exceeded 95% under optimized conditions, indicating effective chelation-based stabilization of mobile Pb(II). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to characterize the properties of Pb–PDTC precipitates and elucidate the chelation mechanism. The results demonstrate that coordination between -CSS- groups in PDTCs and Pb(II) was the main mechanism for Pb(II) chelation and stabilization. Among the tested PDTCs, PDTC-600 exhibited the best overall Pb(II) stabilization performance due to better accessibility of active -CSS- groups. Under acidic conditions, a lower pH destabilized the chelates. Despite this, PDTCs maintained high dissolved Pb(II) removal efficiency in aqueous batch systems, indicating their potential for chelation-based Pb(II) stabilization in leachate-related systems. This study provides a mild and potentially cost-effective strategy for chelation-based Pb(II) stabilization in MSWI fly ash leachate-related systems. Future research should further verify the performance of PDTCs in real, highly alkaline fly ash leachate and optimize chelator molecular weight to balance Pb(II) stabilization efficiency, precipitate stability, reagent safety, and environmental compatibility.

Kinetics and mechanisms of the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto ETS-10

Nguyen Quang Tu Le,Van-Hien Pham,Bich-Ngoc Duong,Duy-Khoi Nguyen,Thi-Phuong-Tu Nguyen,Thien-Hoang Ho,Ngoc-Quyen Tran,Van-Phuc Dinh

Highly crystalline ETS-10 zeolite was prepared with a surface area of 250 m 2 /g and an average pore size of 1.67 nm. • Adsorption was highly pH-dependent, reaching peak efficiency at pH 5.0 for Pb(II) and pH 6.0 for both Cu(II) and Cd(II). • The Sips model best described the adsorption without being limited by concentration. • The adsorption kinetic of Pb(II) follows the PSO model, whereas the ID model controls the removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II). • The removal of Pb, Cu, Cd occurred via stoichiometric Na+/K+ ion exchange within 12-membered rings and surface complexation. Understanding adsorption kinetics and mechanisms play an instrumental role to determine the speed, efficiency, and pathways by which adsorbents remove pollutants. In this study, kinetics and mechanisms of the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto ETS-10 are investigated based on the combination of experimental, theoretical models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, Pseudo-First-Order (PFO), Pseudo-Second-Order (PSO), Intraparticle diffusion (ID)), and modern analytical techniques (XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR and BET-BJH). Obtained results show that Sips models give the best fit with experimental data for three ions, while kinetic of Pb(II) adsorption follows PSO and kinetics of Cu(II) and Cd(II) uptakes follow ID models. The adsorption rates of Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cu(II) during the diffusion process on the surface, whereas the ones of Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) in the intraparticle diffusion process. The mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion, ion-exchange and complexion play mainly roles in the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II). Removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) from aqueous solution by mercapto-modified coal gangue

Zhongbo Shang,LiWen Zhang,Xuyang Zhao,Shanhu Liu,Deliang Li

A low-cost mercapto-modified coal gangue (CG-SH) was fabricated by modification of coal gangue (CG) with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane. The structure and composition for as-prepared CG-SH were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Results indicated that larger amounts of mercapto-groups (-SH) was successfully introduced onto CG, which followed by acted as active sites for the removal of heavy metal cations, such as Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II). The factors that affected the adsorption equilibrium as well as the removal efficiency, i.e., contact time, initial concentration, pH and temperature, were investigated in detail. The adsorption isotherms for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) were well fitted with Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of CG-SH for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) were calculated to be 332.8, 110.4 and 179.2 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) on CG-SH could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model . And thermodynamic analysis suggests that the adsorption process for Pb(II) is exothermal, while that for Cd(II) and Hg(II) are endothermal. The results suggest CG-SH have great potential to be used as efficient absorbent for the removal of heavy metal cations from water.
