Injectable hydrogel is of interesting for wound healing due to it can be used as carriers of bioactive molecules for the reparation of tissues with minimal invasiveness. However, the integration of lipid-soluble substances into hydrogel network is difficult because of the polarity differences. Here, the tea tree oil (TTO) is encapsulated into the hydrogel network via a previous emulsification process, and a tough and antibacterial injectable hydrogel is synthesized by the Schiff base reaction between carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and genipin (GP). CMCS is served as both an emulsifier and a gel-forming material to construct the heterogeneous hydrogel. The obtained hydrogels present high adhesive strength (∼162.75 kPa), great antibacterial properties (over 90 %) and excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, an anal fistula-like wound healing experiment concluded that the heterogeneous hydrogel has good slow-release properties of TTO for an accelerate healing process, this hydrogel shows great potential for the treatment of complex anal fistula wounds.

Yellow tea, a unique type of tea in China which is characterized with yellow color, has gained increasing popularity due to its pleasant taste. However, transformation of aroma compounds during sealed yellowing has been poorly understood. Results of sensory evaluation exhibited that yellowing time was the key factor for flavor and fragrance formation. A total of 52 volatile components during sealed yellowing process of Pingyang yellow soup were further collected and analyzed. The results demonstrated that the sealed yellowing process significantly increased the ratio of alcohol and aldehyde compounds in the aroma volatiles of yellow tea, which were primarily composed of geraniol, linalool, phenylacetaldehyde, linalool oxide and cis -3-hexenol, and their proportion increased with the prolongation of sealed yellowing. Mechanistic speculation revealed that the sealed yellowing process promoted release of alcoholic aroma compounds from their glycoside precursors and enhanced Strecker and oxidative degradation. This study revealed the transformation mechanism of aroma profile during the sealed yellowing process, which would facilitate processing of yellow tea.

To address the environmental hazards associated with traditional chemicals in fabricating metal nanoparticles , greener synthetic method using plant-derived material would be a good choice. In this study, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were greenly fabricated by tea polyphenol (Tp) and applied in hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detection. As-prepared Pt NPs have been characterized by a series of analysis. Physical characterizations show the presence of Pt NPs whose size are about 2.7 ± 0.5 nm and very homogeneous. The electrochemical results show that, as-obtained Pt NPs by Tp (Tp-R-Pt) exhibit good anti-interference, quite a long-term stability and high sensitivity (9.1 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), and it could detect H 2 O 2 without any additional mediator or enzyme. This work would play a positive role in the development of ‘green’ fabrication pattern of nanomaterials using natural resources.

In China, Lu'an Guapian (LAGP) tea consists of tea leaves without tea buds or stems. In this study, we evaluated the aromatic characteristics of LAGP by sensory analysis, aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA), and odor activity values. The sensory analysis revealed that LAGP had cooked soybean-like, cooked chestnut-like, roasted, cooked corn-like, fishy, fruity, floral, and grass aromas. Aroma-active compounds from LAGP were identified by solvent extraction-solid phase extraction (SE-SPE) and headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME), and subjected to AEDA. A total of 91 aroma-active compounds were identified by SE-SPE-AEDA with flavor dilution (FD) factors ranging from 1 to 4096. A total of 66 aroma-active compounds were identified by HS-SPME-AEDA with FD of 1 to 128. Nine compounds with FD ≥64 and OAVs ≥1 were major aroma-active compounds to the aroma of LAGP tea: raspberry ketone (raspberry), ( E )- β -ionone (floral, raspberry), dimethyl sulfide (cooked corn-like), indole (animal), phenylacetaldehyde (floral, honey-like), 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine (roasted), ( Z )-4-heptenal (cooked soybean-like, fishy), ( Z )-jasmone (jasmine), and geraniol (rose).

Endogenous phenols play a significant role in delaying oil rancidity. In this study, the profile of 22 endogenous phenols was determined from tea seed oil by UPLC-MS/MS, of which 15 phenols were identified for the first time. Then seven phenols with high content and strong antioxidant capacity were selected to investigate interaction using the DPPH· and Rancimat. It was found that the interaction of combinations was inconsistent in different media. Combined quercetin + esculetin, caffeoyl tartaric acid + esculetin, caffeoyl tartaric acid + gentisic acid and esculetin + gentisic acid showed synergistic antioxidant effects in oil and ethanol systems. Moreover, through the evaluation of the lipid oxidation process, combined esculetin + gentisic acid exhibited the greatest synergistic antioxidant effect. Notably, combined quercetin + esculetin had an inhibitory effect on the formation of volatile compounds. These findings may provide a basis for explaining the oxidation stability of tea seed oil.

The effect of green tea polysaccharide conjugate (gTPC) on the growth of E. coli was evaluated. gTPC has optimal antibacterial concentrations for E. coli DH5α (4.00 mg/mL) and 25,922 (1.00 mg/mL), with the antibacterial rates of 55.75 % and 50.65 % respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) indicated that gTPC-treated E. coli cells showed obvious morphological changes, part of the cell wall became blurred, and the leakage of cytoplasmic content were observed. The proportion of the propidium iodide (PI) permeable E. coli cells treated using 0.50–2.00 mg/mL gTPC was between 8.79 %–9.49 % as well as 14.10 % (4.00 mg/mL gTPC) and 15.10 % (6.00 mg/mL gTPC). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of 1.00–4.00 mg/mL gTPC treated E. coli increased by 26.57 %–38.19 % with a significant increase level ( p < 0.01). The outer membrane disruption played a key role in the antibacterial activity of gTPC against E. coli . This research result will open a new application field of tea polysaccharide conjugates.

The effects of purity of tea polysaccharides (TPS) on its five antioxidant activities and hypoglycemic activities in vitro were studied. The results showed that the higher the purity of TPS, the lower the antioxidant capacity. The purity of FTPSI is the highest (sugar content 80.72%), but its antioxidant activities were lower than those of Fujian tea polysaccharides (FTPS) and FTPSII. The antioxidant activity of tea polysaccharide is related to its protein and polyphenol content (Pearson r > .90). The protective effect of Zhejiang tea polysaccharides and FTPS on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) was better than that of its purified fractions. The inhibition rates of FTPSII (5 and 2 mg/ml) on α-glucosidase (32.76%) and α-amylase (−11.93%) were higher than those of FTPS and FTPSII. Purification does not change the basic structure of TPS. This study has certain reference value for the study of the antioxidant activities of TPS. Meanwhile, TPS can be used as a potential resource with hypoglycemic function. Practical applications A large number of studies have shown that TPS have antioxidant activity. However, several studies considered that the antioxidant activity of TPS mainly comes from the residues of tea polyphenols. Therefore, the in vitro and cell antioxidant activities of TPS were studied in this paper. We believe that both glycoprotein and tea polyphenol are antioxidants of tea, and tea polysaccharide perform preferable effect on hypoglycemic. HUVEC cell model and four in vitro antioxidant test methods were used to study the antioxidant activities of TPS, and two enzyme inhibition activities were used to study the hypoglycemic effect of TPS, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the study of biological activity of TPS.

The orchid-like odor of a tea infusion is regarded as a noble aroma and an essential sensory attribute for certain premium teas. Such tea leaves are difficult to make and the quality is not always reproducible. This study is focused on the molecular sensory basis of the orchid-like attribute in tea brews. The aroma is defined as jasmine- and magnolia-like floral notes with a fruity undertone and found to be closely related to the flower scent of the orchid Cymbidium faberi Rolfe (hui lan) by a sensory panel. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and aroma extract dilution analysis revealed that the key contributor was (Z)-methyl epijasmonate (epi-MeJA), which was also one of the main odor compounds in the flower scent of C. faberi and in the infusions of selected high-quality teas. Concentration of epi-MeJA was ranging from 0.09 to 2.2 µg/g in the oolong and green tea leaves.

Pheromones can be used as leafhopper attractants. However, commercial pheromone products, such as the Ingle lure, have certain limitations, including poor persistence in the field. In this study, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-ocimene, linalool, and geraniol were selected and behaviorally tested as potential leafhopper attractants. Y-tube olfactometer tests showed that the C2 formulation was more effective than other formulations. In tea field trials, the number of leafhoppers caught by sticky board traps baited with C2 lures was greater than that caught by treatment. The number of leafhoppers attracted by the C2 lures was greater than that attracted by the commercial Ingle lures. Additionally, the total amount of active C2 components on lures was greater than that of the active components on the lure after 14 days. Thus, the results indicated that the C2 formulation may attract leafhoppers and have a greater persistence than other formulations in tea field.

The controlled release packaging system has been considered as an efficient strategy for drug delivery, but the contradiction of instability and release difficulty after encapsulation of natural active compound is unsolved. In this research, tea saponin was embedded into the cavity of β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP) to form a stable inclusion complex and then successfully constructed the nanofibers by electrospinning. The optimal polymer substrates (polyacrylonitrile, 0.1 g β-CDP, 0.03 g tea saponin , dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) 3.75 wt% of the mass of PAN) were obtained to fabricate the TS/PAN@ β-CDP-DMSNs with a typical nanofiber structure with uniform diameter distribution and high porosity. The nanofiber exhibited a better thermal stability (270 °C), higher moisture resistance (water contact angle 126.4°) and relatively larger specific surface area. Results of the FTIR and XPS characterization indicate chemical interactions of TS/PAN@ β-CDP-DMSNs via van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds. As a result, the tea saponin release efficiency increased from 69.30% of liposome to 81.16% of nanofiber at 36 h. Simultaneously, the antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were significantly improved compared with tea saponin and PAN@ β-CDP-DMSNs. This research provides a feasible strategy for the application of the drug delivery systems to both solve the stability and release efficiency of natural active compounds.

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs) are frequently detected disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water with high toxicity and relevance to public health. In this study, we characterized the occurrence, formation, and oxidative stress of the HBQs in tea. 2,6-DCBQ and TetraC-1,2-BQ were identified in all prepared teas at total concentrations of 1.3–2.0 ng/L. 2,6-DCBQ originated from drinking water DBPs, while TetraC-1,2-BQ originated from tea leaves or were generated during tea polyphenol chlorination. HBQs in tea induced the formation of reactive oxygen species and semiquinone radicals, and the oxidative stress could be depleted by tea polyphenols, e.g., (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). High-resolution mass spectrometry analysis indicated that the HBQs combined with EGCG and formed adducts at a ratio of 1:1 or 2:1 with the binding sites on the A ring and B ring of EGCG. The viability of HepG2 cells exposed to 50 μM 2,6-DCBQ was increased from 20.0% to 65.2% when 50 μM of EGCG was added. These results demonstrated that various HBQs can occur in tea due to the HBQ DBPs in drinking water, the leachate from tea leaves, and the chlorination of tea polyphenols; furthermore, the oxidative stress and cellular toxicity induced by HBQs in tea could be decreased by tea polyphenols. This is the first study to report HBQs in tea, elucidate the sources of HBQs, and assess relevant health risks.

The study was designed to investigate the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from Yingshan Cloud Mist Tea. The chemical composition of green tea polysaccharides (GTPS) was analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric (TGA), gas chromatograph (GC), and high-performance gel-permeation chromatography (HPGPC). Then, the antioxidant activities in vitro of GTPS, effects of GTPS on body weight, and the antioxidant activities in chickens were studied. The results showed that GTPS were composed of rhamnose (Rha), arabinose (Ara), xylose (Xyl), mannose (Man), glucose (Glu), and galactose (Gal) in a molar ratio of 11.4 : 26.1 : 1.9 : 3.0 : 30.7 : 26.8 and the average molecular weight was . Furthermore, GTPS exhibited obvious capacity of scavenging DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide radical and enhanced the ferric-reducing power in vitro. Last, GTPS significantly increased the body weight of chickens, enhanced the T-AOC, SOD, and GSH-Px level, and decreased the content of MDA in chickens. The results indicated that GTPS might be a kind of natural antioxidant, which had the potential application in feed industry.
