Multimodal luminescence materials exhibiting multiple stimulus responses are highly favored in optical anti-counterfeiting and information encryption applications. However, this static luminescence under fixed stimuli remains vulnerable to replication. The development of dynamic multicolor luminescent materials offers an effective solution, yet integrating multidimensional dynamic luminescence within a single material remains challenge. Here, this work introduces Tb 3+ capture centers into the self-activated luminescent host MgGa 2 O 4 -featuring an alternating layered structure and abundant defects-to construct efficient energy transfer channels. This design enables not only static multicolor luminescence dependent on concentration and interplanar spacing, but also, for the first time, stable dynamic multicolor luminescence modulated by four independent dimensions: excitation wavelength, time, temperature, and pressure. In particular, the time domain reveals dynamic photoluminescence with tunable evolution rates, as well as visible–near-infrared dual-band persistent luminescence. These unique optical properties provide strong potential for advanced anti-counterfeiting and visual temperature/stress sensing. Moreover, this work proposes a 4D coupled dynamic encryption system that integrates self-destruction protection and memory fault-tolerance, thereby greatly reducing the risk of information leakage. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses further elucidate the underlying mechanisms, opening new avenues for the design of multidimensional dynamic multicolor luminescent materials.

Developing luminescent materials with lower cost and higher temperature sensitivity can provide more options for achieving precise optical thermometry. Therefore, the Tb 4 O 7 and Eu 2 O 3 co-doped BaO-ZnO-P 2 O 5 -B 2 O 3 glasses for optical thermometry were designed and synthesized using a high-temperature melting and quenching method. Due to the low optical basicity and the formation of defects of the glasses, the coexistence of Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ ions was achieved without the reducing agent. In Eu 2 O 3 doped glasses, the relative content variation of Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ ions was analyzed using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes confirmed the effective energy transfer processes between Eu 2+ and Tb 3+ or Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ , which play critical roles in the tunable white emission properties of the material. In the temperature-dependent fluorescence spectra, Eu 2+ ions exhibit significant thermal quenching behavior, which is key to achieving higher temperature sensitivity in optical thermometry. The Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ co-doped glasses were investigated for their optical temperature sensing behavior, utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio techniques, within the temperature range of 273 K–498 K. The maximum absolute (at 498 K) and relative (at 273 K) sensitivity based on the fluorescence intensity ratio, were observed for Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ pairs were 0.145 K −1 and 1.46 % K −1 , respectively, outperforming the conventional Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ combination. Additionally, no significant fluctuation occurred during the repeated experiment. This work demonstrates that Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ co-doped BaO-ZnO-P 2 O 5 -B 2 O 3 glasses could be considered a promising candidate for optical thermometry.

In this paper, a series of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ phosphor are prepared by solid-state reaction. The up-conversion(UC)/down-shifting(DS) luminescence properties are investigated in detail. The intensities of all emission bands present luminescence thermal enhancement under 980 nm excitation. From 293 to 493 K, the red emission intensity of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Eu 3+ sample increase by 2.36 times, and the green emission band intensity of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ sample increase by 4.85 times. The temperature-dependent cooperative energy transfer(CET) process of Yb 3+ ions has an important contribution to thermal enhancement due to the negative thermal expansion(NTE) of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 matrix. In addition, the optical temperature sensing properties of the Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphor are discussed according to the luminescence intensity ratio(LIR) technique. Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphor can obtain bright deep red, yellow and orange light under the excitation of 395, 487 and 980 nm, which is used for multi-mode fluorescence anti-counterfeiting.

Single-phase white phosphors are highly desirable for achieving stable white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). In this work, a series of Ce3+-, Tb3+-, and Sm3+-doped as well as codoped Ca3LuAl3B4O15 (CLAB) phosphors were successfully synthesized, and white light was achieved by tuning relative doping concentrations. The phase structure, morphology, and optical properties were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Energy transfer from the parity-allowed Ce3+ ions to the parity-forbidden Tb3+ and Sm3+ ions was confirmed through spectral analysis and comparison. Under 342 nm excitation, the optimized CLAB:1%Ce3+,2.5%Sm3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor exhibits warm-white-light emission originating from three activators. In addition, the phosphor retains 71% and 42% of its initial emission intensity at 450 and 600 K, respectively, demonstrating the good thermal stability of the phosphor. By combining the optimized CLAB:1%Ce3+,2.5%Sm3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor with a commercial 340 nm ultraviolet (UV) chip, a warm w-LED was fabricated, exhibiting CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.3631, 0.3625), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4419 K, and a color rendering index (CRI) of 93. This study offers a newly designed single-phase white phosphor for high-quality warm w-LEDs.

Ultrathin scintillators are key components of high-spatial-resolution X-ray detectors in medical imaging, high-precision nondestructive inspection, and high-energy physics. Currently, the spatial resolution of X-ray imaging detector generally is enabled by high-light-yield scintillators with minimal optical scattering. However, suppressing optical scattering losses typically require the scintillation layers thinner than a few tens of micrometers, which is difficult to obtain through conventional top-down mechanical thinning. Here, a bottom-up method that rapidly growing inch-sized, Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ doped lanthanide oxychloride (LaOCl) films via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is proposed to obtain large-area ultrathin scintillators. The doping Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ ions act as luminescent activators and provide strong red and green scintillation through efficient f-f intra-configurational transitions, which are shielded from the host lattice by the outer 5s 2 5p 6 electron shells, resulting in sharp emission lines and high quantum efficiency. The layered crystal structure of LaOCl further facilitates anisotropic growth, enabling precise control of film thickness from a few atomic layers up to the micrometer scale. The growing LaOCl:Eu 3+ film with thickness of approximately 30 μm shows a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 99.3%, and demonstrating an ultralow X-ray dose-rate detection limit of 143.41 nGy s −1 , owing to efficient energy transfer from the LaOCl host to the activator ions. Furthermore, the growing LaOCl:Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ films exhibit excellent linear response and radiation hardness under X-ray exposure, retaining above 95% of their initial intensity after prolonged cyclic irradiation at 27.8 μGy s −1 for 24,000 s. These results demonstrate CVD-grown LaOCl:Ln films as a promising platform for high-resolution and low-dose X-ray imaging detection. An ultrathin scintillator film is fabricated via an unconventional bottom-up chemical vapor deposition–driven evaporation growth method. The oriented attachment and layer-by-layer stacking of LaOCl:Ln 3+ crystal nuclei enables the fabrication of centimeter-scale ultrathin films with controllable thickness. The doping Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ act as luminescent activators, generating intense red and green emissions through efficient 4f-4f intra-configurational transitions. Owing to the effective shielding of the outer 5s 2 5p 6 electron shells, these transitions exhibit sharp emission lines and exceptionally high quantum efficiency. For LaOCl:Eu 3+ films with a thickness of approximately 30 μm, the photoluminescence quantum yields achieves a near unit of 99.3%, demonstrating an ultralow X-ray detection limits of 143.41 nGy s −1 and outstanding radiation stability. A series of Ca 2 Gd 1-x-y Zr 2 Al 3 O 12 :xBi 3+ ,yTb 3+ phosphors have been successfully synthesized. • The anti-thermal quenching behavior of Tb 3+ ions was attributed to the synergistic effect of electron-phonon coupling and crystal field. • A dual-pathway FIR thermometer has been developed that achieves high sensitivity over a broad temperature range. • Optical materials were fabricated for optical fiber temperature detection platform and anti-counterfeiting label. Developing fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometers with low cost, high sensitivity and wide measurement range is a key bottleneck in this field, which poses severe challenges to conventional thermosensitive materials. Herein, a series of Ca 2 GdZr 2 Al 3 O 12 :Bi 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphors with multi-excitation pathways were fabricated, and anti-thermal quenching (ATQ) behavior was attributed to the synergistic effect of electron-phonon coupling and crystal field, boosting the sensitivity and temperature detection range of fluorescent thermometers. Among them, under the excitation pathway where both Bi 3+ and Tb 3+ ions exhibit typical TQ behaviors, the FIR 309 thermometer achieves a maximum S r 309 value of 1.46% K −1 (at 353 K), thereby exhibiting excellent temperature sensing performance in the range of 293–433 K. In contrast, for the excitation pathway where the ATQ behavior of Tb 3+ ions is realized via the synergistic effect of electron-phonon coupling and crystal field, the S r 322 value of the FIR 322 optical thermometer increases to 2.05% K −1 , and shifts the high-sensitivity detection range to 413–573 K. Notably, the combined temperature detection range (293–573 K) of the FIR 309 and FIR 322 thermometers is two times that of the single FIR 309 thermometer. Moreover, the multi-pathway FIR optical thermometer exhibits outstanding temperature measurement performance on the optical fiber temperature detection platform. These promising findings offers a new perspective for developing optical thermometer with exceptional performance. Download: Download high-res image (85KB) Download: Download full-size image

Cyanate ester resin (CER) is an excellent thermosetting polymer. However, its brittleness and poor mechanical properties limit its application. The innovation of this work lies in the smart collaborative toughening effects of Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ @uCNTs working together with phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (marked as PES-C) on dicyanate ester of bisphenol F. Tb 3+ -complex enhances Eu 3+ @uCNT-effects, and the cooperation of PES-C together with Eu 3+ -Tb 3+ @uCNTs (marked as ET-uC) functions strongly to increase flexural, tensile, and impact strengths by 209%, 120%, and 286%, respectively. When additions of ET-uC ratio at 0.6 wt% and PES-C ratio at 15% to CER. At the same time, we can get more multiple enhancing effects can be observed as below. The introduction of ET-uC reduces the curing temperature of the composite material from 342°C to 271°C. At the same time, the mass loss rate decreased from 87% to 55%. The intensity of luminescent CER/ET-uC/PES-C is much stronger compared to CER/ET-C/PES-C. If the curing temperature is 250°C, the luminescence lifetimes of CER/ET-C/PES-C and CER/ET-uC/PES-C become 411.23 and 731.91 μs, respectively. These strong data confirm that our strategy of ET-uC collaborating with the linear thermal stable polymer of PES-C functions has generated the breakthrough to improve the comprehensive properties of CER. In this work, we contributed new lanthanide (Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ) complexes that were embedded in both positively and negatively charged polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles (PCN). Luminescent Eu 3+ complexes [Eu(TTA) 3 Phen] are formed from Eu 3+ using 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) and 1,10-phenanothroline hydrate (Phen) as ligands. Luminescent Tb 3+ complexes [Tb(AcAc) 3 Phen] are formed from Tb 3+ using acetyl acetone (AcAc) and Phen as ligands. Then, polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles(PCN) are applied to embed lanthanide (Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ) complexes with two forms of positive charged and negative charged PCNs. PCN/Eu(TTA) 3 Phen and PCN/Tb(AcAc) 3 Phen show that the particle sizes are 40–60 nm and 30–80 nm, respectively. Notably, both hybrid PCN nanoparticles with Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ inclusions behave excellent characteristic luminescence properties. The red emission hybrid nanoparticles of PCN/Eu(TTA) 3 Phen indicate high luminescence intensities at low concentration of 10 −5 M whereas The green emission hybrid nanoparticles of PCN/Eu(TTA) 3 Phen show high luminescence intensity at high concentration of 10 −3 M. Furthermore, concentration-dependent luminescence quenching by heavy metal ions (Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , and Zn 2+ ) at concentrations as low as 10 −5 M is also reported. This quenching effect of heavy metal ions on the fluorescence property of PCN/Eu(TTA) 3 Phen and PCN/Tb(AcAc) 3 Phen nanoparticles will be valuable for sensing application on bio- and environmental fields. The charged polyelectrolyte polymeric shells of both PCN/Eu(TTA) 3 Phen and PCN/Tb(AcAc) 3 Phen nanoparticles make the lanthanide(Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ) complexes be compatible in biological and aqueous environmental systems.

The polychromatic emission and wide-range color tuning in the luminescent nanoparticles are currently of crucial importance, due to the development of color and white light-emitting diode (LED) devices, based on such lanthanide-doped nanostructured materials . By utilization of precipitation method, Tb 3+ -doped and Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ -codoped NaYbF 4 nanoparticles ( i . e . NPs) are synthesized. For Tb 3+ -doped NaYbF 4 NPs excited by 377 nm, green emission originating from Tb 3+ is observed, where its optimum state is obtained when Tb 3+ content is 25 mol% and the concentration quenching mechanism is found by electric dipole-dipole interaction. Moreover, due to the existence of energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ , polychromatic emissions are realized in Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ -codoped NaYbF 4 NPs as Eu 3+ content increases. Through analyzing emission decay times and emission spectra , it was confirmed that the energy transfer mechanism in the synthesized NPs is governed mainly by electric dipole-dipole interaction. Furthermore, the resultant NPs also own strong resistance to temperature, which is verified by temperature-dependent emission spectra , and the activation energies of Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ are 0.206 and 0.207 eV, respectively. In addition, by employing designed NPs as yellow-emitting components, the fabricated white-LED emits brightness warm white light with color coordinate of (0.385, 0.380), high color rendering index of 84.3 and low correlated color temperature of 3903 K. This work does not only offer an available route to develop NPs with polychromatic emissions but also devise promising luminescent materials for improving the performance of the phosphor-converted white-LED.

In this work, Pr 3+ and Tb 3+ coactivated Na 5 Gd(WO 4 ) 4 (NGW) phosphors have been synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reactions and the scheelite crystal structure was determined for the first time. A color-tunable emission in NGW: Pr 3+ , Tb 3+ phosphors can be realized by the modulation of excitation wavelengths, namely, the fluorescence intensity ratio of Pr 3+ to Tb 3+ in this material could be changed by different excitation. With increasing temperature, the luminescence of NGW: Pr 3+ , Tb 3+ phosphor decreases almost linearly with the CIE coordinate variation from (0.306, 0.392) to ((0.375, 0.465) and result in the color of the photoluminescence variation from the blue-green to yellow. These results demonstrated that the investigated phosphors are attractive for application in display lighting and optical temperature sensing.

A Tb3+ functionalized triazine-porous organic framework (Tb3+/TAPOF) was prepared by introducing Tb3+ into a triazine-porous organic framework through a coordination bond. Combining the advantages of both Tb3+ and TAPOF, Tb3+/TAPOF showed good thermal stability, a high specific surface area, and excellent fluorescence performance. As the concentration of ciprofloxacin became higher, the intensity of the peak at 544 nm increased, while that of the peak at 440 nm did not change. Thus, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on Tb3+/TAPOF for selective ciprofloxacin determination was constructed, and the mechanism of ciprofloxacin determination was studied using the UV-vis and phosphorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime. A good linear relationship, under the optimized conditions, was obtained between the I544/I440 value and the ciprofloxacin concentration in the range of 0.06 μmol L−1 to 5.0 μmol L−1, and the limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) was 19 nmol L−1. Moreover, the ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on Tb3+/TAPOF was applied to the determination of ciprofloxacin in aquatic products with recoveries in the range of 96.1–108.6%. These results obtained by the ratiometric fluorescence method and the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method are consistent for determination of aquatic products, which further proves that this method based on Tb3+/TAPOF is accurate. Generally, these results demonstrate that the Tb3+/TAPOF based ratiometric fluorescent sensor has an extensive application prospect in ciprofloxacin determination in the aquatic product industry.

Rare earth doped 12CaO·7Al 2 O 3 (C12A7) glass-ceramics are one of attractive photonic materials due to their high transparency, high luminescent efficiency and eco-friendly nature. A series of C12A7 glasses with different Tb 3+ doping concentrations was prepared by aerodynamic levitation method. The C12A7:Tb glass-ceramics were obtained via in-situ growth from the glasses with the identical chemical composition at 800 °C. The microstructure observation demonstrates that the elemental distributions of Ca and Al are homogeneous in the glass-ceramics and the grain size of C12A7 is 4–70 nm. The in-line transmittance of glass-ceramics reaches as high as 82% at 1500 nm. The emission spectra of the C12A7:Tb glass-ceramics present characteristic Tb 3+ emission peaks at 486 nm ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 6 ), 541 nm ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 ), 585 nm ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 4 ) and 621 nm ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 3 ). The photoluminescence lifetime of C12A7:0.3%Tb glass-ceramic is 1.9 ms. Compared with the emission intensity of the glasses, that of the glass-ceramics increases due to the reducing in concentration of oxygen vacancy associated with network forming (NWF) cations. The highly transparent C12A7:Tb glass-ceramics may be a promising candidate for green light source in solid state lighting.
