UiO-66 materials have the benefit of excellent stability, porosity, huge surface area, and presence of flaws, hence designing oxidative desulfurization (ODS) catalysts based on UiO-66 is very appealing. Herein, tungsten doped UiO-66 materials were synthesized with post-doping and in situ synthesis methods, and used as heterogeneous catalysts for the room-temperature oxidative desulfurization reactions. The successful doping of tungsten into the UiO-66 framework was demonstrated by FT-IR, UV–Vis, Raman and TGA characterizations. XAS characterization disclosed that tungsten element formed Zr-O-W bond on the defect sites for the tungsten doped UiO-66 materials. At the same time, the in situ synthesized W 2 @U-150 catalyst revealed the highest 98.5% of dibenzothiophene (DBT) elimination within 1h of desulfurization reaction as well as the biggest catalytic efficiency of 17727.3 h −1 mol −1 at room temperature due to its smallest band gap energy of 3.32 eV, highest tungsten content of 9.8 %, and most Lewis acid amount of 47.1 μmol/g. In addition, the synthesized W 2 @U-150 catalyst showed excellent re-usability for five cycles.

Developing metal–organic framework (MOF)-based sorbents with high water-uptake capacity and mild regeneration conditions remains challenging, but is highly sought after for addressing water shortages. Herein, we report a strategy for fabricating thermal-responsive Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)/UiO-66 composite aerogels with variable PNIPAM loading by leveraging the ordered nanopores of UiO-66 colloids, enabling the confined polymerization of NIPAM monomers within the pores, which allows for controllable water capture and release at above 32 ℃. The thermal-responsive PNIPAM/UiO-66 composite aerogels, with varying PNIPAM loadings, demonstrated an outstanding maxima water capture of over 2100 wt% at room temperature and reversible release at above 32 ℃. This performance sets a new benchmark for the leading water-capture adsorbents reported in the literature, thanks to the extensive specific surface area of the aerogels and the unique hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity transition exhibited by the PNIPAM component. More intriguingly, the aforementioned phase transition can be directly visualized by incorporating 4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl) benzoic acid (TPE-COOH) molecules with the well-known aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect into the aerogels. The remarkable water-uptake ability and mild release conditions showcased in this study open new possibilities for practical water harvesting.

The size modulation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is of vital importance in many fields, especially in sensing for enhanced performance, while the synthesis of small-sized MOF nanocrystals with wide active reaction sites remains challenging. Here, we report a general sustainable strategy for building smaller, nanosized, self-assembled, film-forming UiO-66 with abundant active reaction sites via carboxylated cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-induced in situ growth. Benefiting from the remarkably boosted active site quantity, the eliminated background fluorescence, as well as the superior charge transfer between an amino group and an analyte, an efficient fluorescent platform for the detection of the nerve agent analog diethyl cyanophosphonate (DCNP) was established. Not only were a significantly low limit of detection (LOD, 4.2 nM/0.685 ppb) and robust selectivity against a wide range of common substances (>21 types) achieved, but an immediate response to DCNP vapor (<1 s) was also demonstrated by a sensing chip. We believe that the design of UiO-66 with nanosize and monodispersity would help advance the development of high-performance MOF-based fluorescence sensing devices.

Recent research efforts have increasingly focused on the synthesis of high-efficiency boron adsorbents, particularly bulk MOFs-based materials rather than powders adsorbents. Herien, a novel GO/UiO-66 aerogel bulk adsorbent was successfully prepared using a facile solvothermal method combined with ascorbic acid thermal reduction. This adsorbent demonstrates effective boron removal from aqueous solutions at 0.08 M boron solution and addresses the challenge of recovering MOFs powders. Consequently, at an initial pH of 10, the adsorption capacity of the GO/UiO-66–4 aerogel reached as high as 81.7 mg/g, and adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 120 min. The pseudo-second-order model effectively described the adsorption kinetics with a correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.9997, suggesting that the adsorption process was chemisorption-dominated. Furthermore, both the Henry and Freundlich models accurately depicted the adsorption isotherm, indicating that the boron adsorption by UiO-66 was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. In addition, the critical limiting factors influencing the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent were investigated. The findings indicated that the active sites on the UiO-66 surface were the predominant factor determining its adsorption capacity. Importantly, this work offers significant insights into the development of bulk MOFs-based adsorbents, as the adsorbent exhibits high boron selectivity and maintains stability over 10 cycles.

In this study, acetic acid (HOAc) was applied to induce missing linker defects on UiO-66 via coordination competition strategy and its role on the outstanding adsorption capacity for ketoprofen (KTP) was investigated systematically. This strategy was proved to simultaneously modulate the defect sites and increase the pore size, pore volume, and surface area of the UiO-66. The missing linker defects constructed porous structure, which dramatically enhanced specific adsorption for KTP. Results showed that the surface area of UiO-66 possessed 27 % enhancement as defect sites increased (from 875.38 to 1439.86 m 2 /g) and exhibited good linearity ( R 2 = 0.998) with adsorption capacity (from 645.5 to 1136.4 mg/g). The adsorption performance of UiO-66 on KTP was investigated on both kinetics and isotherms which were fit by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, respectively. According to the Arrhenius equation and Van't Hoff equation, the activation energy increased with missing linker defects and the adsorption is a spontaneous, exothermic and randomness–increasing process. Remarkably, the defective UiO-66 maintained high adsorption resilience across a broad pH range and demonstrated superior selectivity for KTP in the presence of competing ions and humic acid (HA). The results of characterization (FTIR, XPS) and DFT calculations indicated that the adsorption of KTP was primarily driven by chemisorption at the Lewis acid metal centers of UiO-66, accompanied by secondary interactions such as van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding.

NH2-UiO-66 has been recognized as a promising porous material due to its large specific surface area (SSA) and excellent structural stability. However, their poor electrochemical performance hinders their application in supercapacitors. In this study, NH2-UiO-66 was attached to the surface of NiCo-LDH nanoflower by employing the self-assembly strategy, which significantly inhibited the stacking of NiCo-LDH nanoflower, forming the NiCo-LDH/NH2-UiO-66 (NC/NU) composite. Owing to weakening of the aggregation effect, abundant redox-active sites, and ion diffusion channels of NH2-UiO-66, the obtained NC/NU composites exhibit a high specific capacitance of 867.4 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 and an outstanding cycling stability of 86.7% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. Additionally, derived 3D reticulated porous carbon (PCC) with ZIF-67 and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as precursors was synthesized by a two-step KOH activation strategy and used as an anode material. The hybrid supercapacitor (NC/NU-80//PCC-0.75) provides an energy density of 30.6 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 800.6 W kg–1, with a capacity retention of 96% after 5000 charge/discharge cycles. The obtained results demonstrate that NC/NU-80 nanoflower composites have considerable potential for application in the field of supercapacitors.

To address the growing threat of mercury ion pollution in water, a biomimetic nanocomposite membrane was developed by modifying UiO-66-NH₂ with the thiol ligand DPEN, inspired by the Hg(II)-binding mechanism of cysteine in proteins. The membrane was fabricated through in-situ synthesis of UiO-66-NH₂ on a porous polyethersulfone support, followed by chemical grafting of DPEN. Comprehensive characterization via FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM confirmed the successful formation of the modified nanoparticles. The fabricated membrane demonstrated outstanding performance, achieving over 99 % removal of Hg(II) with a high pure water flux of 6344 L·m −2 ·h −1 . It also exhibited excellent recyclability, retaining 97.4 % removal efficiency after ten cycles, and maintained structural stability across a broad pH range (3–9). This biomimetic approach offers a promising strategy for designing efficient and durable membranes for heavy metal removal, with significant potential in environmental water treatment.

Construction of recoverable magnetic Fe₃O₄-NH₂/UiO-66/SiO₂–silica seed for CaF₂ crystallization. • Composite seed directs fluoride conversion from wastewater to CaF₂ solid. • UiO-66/SiO₂ interface promotes ion enrichment and heterogeneous nucleation. • Magnetic recovery reduces the loss of fine CaF₂-loaded seed particles. • Integration of fluoride removal, CaF₂ recovery and solid-liquid separation. Calcium-based precipitation is widely used for treating concentrated fluoride wastewater, but rapid homogeneous nucleation often generates fine CaF₂ particles that are difficult to recover. In this study, a silica-supported Fe₃O₄-NH₂/UiO-66 composite was developed as a magnetically recoverable crystallization seed for directing CaF₂ formation. At an initial fluoride concentration of 2000 mg/L, a Ca:F molar ratio of 0.8:1, 0.5 g seed dosage, pH 7–8, and 25 °C reduced residual fluoride to 2.56 mg/L, corresponding to 99.87% removal. Ca 2+ -free tests yielded equilibrium fluoride uptakes of 570 and 755 mg/g for UiO-66 and the composite, respectively, indicating that adsorption contributed to interfacial enrichment but was insufficient to account for the high fluoride conversion after Ca 2+ addition. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the initial saturation index increased from 3.1 to 7.5 and relative supersaturation from 28.9 to 288 as the initial fluoride concentration increased from 250 to 2000 mg/L. The crystallization rate followed a supersaturation-dependent power law with a kinetic exponent of 2.146 (R 2 = 0.993). After 8 cycles, fluoride-removal and magnetic-recovery efficiencies remained at 80.09% and 80.50%, respectively. In actual industrial wastewater, 98.82% fluoride removal was achieved after pH adjustment to 7. These results demonstrate the potential of Fe₃O₄-NH₂/UiO-66/SiO₂ as a reusable crystallization seed for fluoride recovery.

Abstract CdS nano-photocatalysts hold a great promise for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution; however, their practical application is greatly hampered by poor activity and stability due to the recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers and photocorrosion phenomena. Herein, we report a novel 3-dimensional CdS@UiO-66 nanostructures obtained by a facile solvent-free approach; with a step-by-step procedure, the core/shell configuration provided a suitable unit in size to easily equip defect-rich MoS 2 nanosheets. The UiO-66 Zr-MOFs used as a porous container to promote the dispersion of CdS nanoparticles, resulting to the increasement of active sites for photocatalytic reaction. The further enhanced photocatalytic activity for MoS 2 hybrid CdS@UiO-66 originated from the manufactured defect on the exposed edges of MoS 2 nanosheets, which was produced by adjusting the S/Mo ratio. UiO-66 did not only provide extensive migration routes over photogenerated electrons, more importantly, it created ample time and sites for accelerating consumption of the isolated photogenerated holes with sacrificial agent, resulting in alleviating photocorrosion reaction. The photocatalytic efficiency and photostability were simultaneously promoted. This work highlights the potential application of core/shell configuration in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In order to enhance the CO 2 capture performance of ionic liquids, this work synthesized porous ionic liquids (pILs) utilizing UiO-66 as the porous material and [DMIM][NTf 2 ] as a sterically hindered solvent. By controlling the MOF proportion within a low range (<2.0%), the pILs achieved a dual enhancement in both CO 2 solubility and diffusion coefficient. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the structural integrity, well-defined morphology, and correct chemical composition of the synthesized materials. The CO 2 solubility in the low-pressure region was measured by the isochoric saturation method, and the corresponding diffusion coefficients were calculated based on the semi-infinite volume model. The results demonstrated that the pILs achieved dual enhancement in both CO 2 solubility and diffusion coefficient exhibiting an increase of approximately 20% for both parameters. And the absorption-desorption experiment further showed an enhancement in CO 2 solubility, with over 94% cyclic efficiency after five cycles for the three representative absorption pressure. These results indicate the significant enhancement and exceptional absorption stability of pILs across a wide pressure range. The dual enhancement effect demonstrates the exceptional CO 2 capture performance offering important insights for the practical industrial application.

The stringent environmental regulations on uranium-containing wastewater have rendered traditional treatment methods largely inadequate, creating an urgent demand for high-performance and stable adsorbents. In this study, the modified UiO-66 with aminophosphonate groups (UiO-66-NH2–P) was used to enhance its U(VI) removal capacity from water through the synergistic effect of multifunctional groups. U6NP retains a well-defined MOF framework after acid immersion(pH 1–2). Under optimal conditions, the maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity reaches 320.81 mg/g. The adsorption behavior conformed to the PSO kinetic equation and the Langmuir model, indicating a spontaneous endothermic process. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, combined with optimized fitting using a cluster model, were performed to analyze various coordination modes of UO22+ in this system. The results provide atomic-level insights for the rational design of high-performance and high-stability adsorbent materials.

The separation of hydrocarbon isomers is essential in petrochemical upgrading; however, conventional distillation processes remain highly energy-intensive. Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes have emerged as an energy-efficient alternative, yet the fabrication of intercrystalline defect-free membranes with precise microstructural control remains challenging. Herein, we report a modulator-controlled nucleation and growth strategy to direct the crystallization of UiO-66 membranes. Acetic acid (high pK a , weak deprotonation ability) was used to induce rapid nucleation and generate a uniform nanoparticle seed layer, whereas formic acid (low pK a , strong deprotonation ability) competed vigorously with ligands for zirconium coordination, promoting Ostwald ripening and facilitating the formation of a well-intergrown, molecular-sieving membrane. The optimized membrane exhibited a separation factor of 2.27 for (n-hexane + 3-methylpentane) versus 2,2-dimethylbutane. When challenged with a ten-component alkane isomer mixture mimicking light naphtha, a two-stage cascade process enriched low-octane alkanes from 49.0 to 90.5 wt% in the permeate stream, while simultaneously concentrating high-octane alkanes in the retentate. This work constitutes the first demonstration of acidity-modulated MOF membranes for the separation of industrially relevant alkane isomers, highlighting their potential to hybridize or replace energy-intensive distillation in the petrochemical industry.
