One of the potential treatments for bacterial wound infections is photodynamic therapy. WO3–x semiconductor materials can generate reactive oxygen species when exposed to light, which can inactivate bacteria. In this work, we improved their photocatalytic performance by doping WO3–x with Cu. The wound dressing was prepared by loading Cu–WO3–x into a highly biocompatible chitosan sponge. The composite sponge dressing showed significant inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and in vitro toxicity assays on L929 cells demonstrated the biosafety of the dressing. Through in vivo wound healing trials, composite sponge dressings have been shown to accelerate wound healing, and this composite chitosan sponge can be possibly used for photodynamic therapy of bacterial wound infections.

The design of efficient and stable photocatalysts for the removal of heavy metals in the environment has become a research hotspot. Here, a composite photocatalyst with three-dimensional In 2 S 3 microspheres supported by WO 3 nanoparticles was synthesized for the photoreduction of Cr(VI) for the first time. The constructed composite catalyst has a direct Z-scheme electron transport mechanism without any precious metals (Au, Pt, and Ag), quantum dots (TiO 2 QDs) or carbon materials (Graphene) as electronic media. Constructing a direct Z-scheme WO 3 /In 2 S 3 photocatalyst can greatly retain the reduction and oxidation reaction sites on the surface of the heterojunction and accelerate the reduction reaction. Under visible light irradiation, it greatly promotes the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI), which is 67.7 times and 3.6 times the reduction rates of WO 3 and In 2 S 3 , respectively. The favorable photocatalytic performance of WO 3 /In 2 S 3 should be attributed to the effective interfacial contact between the semiconductors in the Z-scheme system, thereby realizing effective electron transfer and charge separation. In addition, the stability of WO 3 /In 2 S 3 was studied, and a possible mechanism in the photoreduction process of Cr(VI) was proposed.

The production of a large number of metal oxide semiconductor materials is more for design needs, while theoretical exploration is relatively less concerned. In this work, WO 3 nanoparticles were prepared by the tungstic acid thermolysis method, and the catalysts of Pt and Ru were loaded on the surface of nanoparticles with a wet impregnation method. As expected, the sensitive responses were enhanced significantly with the additional loading of Pt, which revealed that bimetallic loading could achieve better properties with a smaller loaded amount than single metal. According to the power-law response to oxygen and H 2 -TPR results, the sensitization mechanism of noble metals loaded WO 3 to acetone as the typical VOCs was investigated. The results showed that the sensing processes were dominated by oxygen adsorption behavior and there was no difference with the loading of Ru. Furthermore, the power-law coefficient n became smaller with Pt loading. It is proposed that oxygen adsorbates on the surface become more active due to Pt. We would like to propose further a perspective, i.e., polymetallic loading that utilizes the properties of different metals to achieve synergism.

Nb-doped WO 3 films were prepared on FTO substrates by a facile sol–gel dip coating method. The influence of Nb doping on the microstructure and electrochromic characteristics of the films have been explored. The results indicate that the pure WO 3 film can achieve a synchronizing modulation of visible and near-infrared light bands by suppling voltage. However, the Nb-doped WO 3 films exhibit an ability of independent and selective transmittance modulation in both bands. Moreover, the Nb-doped WO 3 films undergo two electrochromic processes at different voltages, which are local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) electrochromic process and electrochemical redox electrochromic process, respectively. These two electrochromic processes exhibit a unique photoelectric conversion behavior, that is, the reversible “bleached and warm” - “bleached and cool” - “colored and cool” modes. Additionally, with the increase of Nb doping content, the LSPR electrochromic effect becomes stronger. The high LSPR enhances the electrochemical redox electrochromic performance of the Nb-doped WO 3 films, enabling them to exhibit better electrochromic performance in the visible and near-infrared bands.

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from air directly under sunlight can contribute significantly to carbon neutralization. It is an ideal pathway to replace the industrial Haber Bosch process in future. A Fe-doped layered WO 3 photocatalyst containing oxygen vacancies was developed which can fix nitrogen from air directly under sunlight at atmospheric pressure. The iron doping enhances the transport efficiency of photogenerated electrons. The photocatalytic efficiency is around 4 times higher than that of pure WO 3 . The optium nitrogen fixation conditions were examined by orthogonal experiments and its nitrogen fixation performance could reach up to 477 μg·g cat −1 ·h −1 under sunlight. In addition, the process of nitrogen fixation was detected by situ infrared, which confirmed the reliability of nitrogen fixation. Also, modeling on the interactions between light and the photocatalyst was carried out to study the distribution of surface charge and validate the light absorption of the photocatalyst. This work provides a simple and cheap strategy for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from air under mild conditions.

The heterostructured NiWO 4 /WO 3 nanotubes (Ni/W NTs) were synthesized by using a facile self-assembly method on the sacrificial polystyrene (PS) nanofibers templates. Then, the Pt-decorated NiWO 4 /WO 3 (Pt@Ni/W) composite NTs were obtained through using an ultrasonic mixing method. The experimental results display that the order of gas-sensing performance is Pt@Ni/W>Ni/W>WO 3 . The 2wt.%Pt@Ni/W-5 NTs indicate the supreme acetone-sensing response ( R air / R gas =58.4 at 100×10 −6 ) at 375 °C, which is 10.6 and 1.53 times that of the WO 3 and NiWO 4 /WO 3 NTs, respectively. Additionally, the 2wt.%Pt@Ni/W-5 NTs also exhibit the dramatically high selectivity toward acetone against ethanol, methanal, methanol, NH 3 and toluene. The Pt-decorated Ni/W NTs show the excellent responsivity and stability toward acetone, which is ascribed to the construction of heterostructured NiWO 4 /WO 3 and the spill-over effect of Pt nanoparticles.

In this study, a gas sensor based on TiO 2 /WO 3 ·H 2 O (TW) heterojunction with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity and long-term stability for ammonia (NH 3 ) detection was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method . Compared with WO 3 ·H 2 O and TiO 2 , TW heterojunction shows excellent selective to NH 3 and the response varies by 3 orders of magnitude to 500 ppm NH 3 at room temperature (RT, 25 ± 3 °C). The lowest response limit of TW is 0.5 ppm and the response/recovery time is 2.35 s/1.95 s. The main reason for improving the performance of TW heterojunction to NH 3 detection is that TiO 2 nanoparticles cause more oxygen free radicals on the surface of TW heterojunction, which can react with more NH 3 molecules to release more electrons. Therefore, heterojunction structure increases the electrons and reduces the width of electron depletion layer in TW gas sensor. In addition, TW heterojunction has small and uniform particle size which can provide more active sites for the reaction between NH 3 and oxygen free radicals to release more electrons. This work provides a heterojunction structure composed of TiO 2 and WO 3 ·H 2 O to effectively improve the performance of sensor for NH 3 detection at RT, which is beneficial to the development of high-performance gas sensors.

The efficient, safe, and low-cost treatment of uranium-containing wastewater is still an urgent and meaningful problem. The uranium-containing wastewater system commonly contains a variety of soluble organics, which complex with hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) and thus increase the difficulty for U(VI) treatment. Herein, we introduced oxygen vacancy into WO 3 nanosheets to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) and photo-degradation of organics. The WO 2.78 nanosheets showed U(VI) removal ratio of 95.6% with the reduction ratio of 84.5% in 8 mg/L of U(VI). Additionally, the maximum extraction capacity of U(VI) on WO 2.78 nanosheets reached 507.2 mg/g at 200 mg/L of U(VI). Meanwhile, the presence of excessive interfering ions and the cycle use of the WO 2.78 nanosheets hardly decreased the removal ratio of U(VI). The mechanistic study demonstrated that the introduction of oxygen vacancies not only broadened the response range of visible light, but also increased the adsorption of U(VI) over WO 3 nanosheets. Moreover, the decreased reduction potential of WO 2.78 nanosheets to U(VI) verified the enhanced photocatalytic activity of WO 2.78 nanosheets. Our work provided a successful example for the promotion of reduction efficiency toward U(VI) pollutants by the vacancy engineering in metal oxides.

In this study, we used a hydrothermal method to prepare WO3 nanospheres doped with a bimetal of Pd and Ni and used them in hydrogen sensing. The results show that the bimetal-doped WO3 nanospheres have a higher response, faster response/recovery time, and better selectivity than single metal-doped WO3. Moreover, they still have a high response to hydrogen at a low concentration. With 5 ppb of hydrogen, the sensor's response can reach 1.5, which is 1.5 times greater than that of pure WO3. Furthermore, the bimetal-doped WO3 has a shorter response time (14 s) and recovery time (8 s). This superior performance of the Pd/Ni-doped WO3 to hydrogen is most probably because of the strong adsorption of hydrogen, which results from the synergistic effect of two metals.

A novel hollow-sphere structure of tungsten trioxide and titanium dioxide (WO 3 /TiO 2 ) heterojunction was prepared by using a combination of hydrothermal and calcination method. The prepared WO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction was characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray electron spectrometer (XPS), etc. The results showed that 10 % WO 3 /TiO 2 (the mass ratio of W in WO 3 to Ti in TiO 2 was 10 %) has a hollow spherical structure, and the bandgap energy of WO 3 /TiO 2 sample was lower than that of TiO 2 . WO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction showed an improved photocatalytic performance, compared to pure TiO 2 and WO 3 as well as ZnO and SnO 2 , in degrading a high concentration dye methylene blue (MB) and a micro-organic pollutant metoprolol (MET) under visible-light. MB and MET removal efficiencies could reach 87.8 % and 67.1 %, respectively, within 150 min, by 10 % WO 3 /TiO 2 sample. The relevant photocatalysis mechanisms of the WO 3 /TiO 2 photocatalyst were revealed and discussed. TiO 2 in a heterojunction acted as a photo-generated holes acceptor, effectively decreasing the recombination of photo-generated carriers and improving photocatalytic performance. Our results indicate that the hollow spherical WO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction is more promising candidate for wastewater treatment in practical applications.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), as one of the most important chemicals, is widely applied in many industries. Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction provides a safe and on-site method for H 2 O 2 synthesis. The research of transition metal oxides (TMOs) for H 2 O 2 synthesis is mainly focused on the modification of transition metal elements and graphene. Few studies directly control pure TMOs without changing supporting materials or introducing other elements. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a phase regulation strategy to develop highly selective and stable tungsten trioxide catalysts for H 2 O 2 generation through 2e − oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR). DFT calculations show that the kinetic energy barrier (0.08 eV) of the 2e − ORR pathway on the cubic tungsten trioxide (c-WO 3 ) surface is much lower than that of the 4e − ORR pathway (0.76 eV). As a result, a selectivity of 90 % and H 2 O 2 production rate of 179 mmol g cat −1 h −1 are achieved at 0.1 V vs RHE under alkaline conditions, outperforming all catalysts previously reported under the same conditions. Moreover, after continuous testing for more than 24 h at a constant potential of 0.1 V vs RHE, the H 2 O 2 generation rate has not been diminished, indicating an excellent stability of c-WO 3 in practical applications.

ABSTRACT In order to avoid the formation of η phase (W 6 Co 6 C or W 3 Co 3 C) that adversely affects the sintering process and its products in the preparation process of ultra-fine WC-Co powder, a technical route of pre-reduction of WO 3 –Co 3 O 4 to WO 2 –Co and then deep reduction carbonization to WC-Co powder has been proposed. This study mainly investigates the influence of gas partial pressure on the pre-reduction process of WO 3 –Co 3 O 4 under a mixed atmosphere of H 2 –C 2 H 4 –Ar at 600 °C and establishes the kinetic equations of pre-reduction and carbon evolution. The results indicate that increasing the partial pressure of hydrogen is conducive to the rapid and complete conversion of WO 3 to WO 2 . High carbon content can be generated by the deposition of C 2 H 4 , and it hinders the diffusion of the reducing gas; WO 3 still cannot be completely reduced to WO 2 as the partial pressure of C 2 H 4 increases to 60%. For the carbon evolution of C 2 H 4 , the carbon amount is positively related to the H 2 partial pressure, but it shows the highest amount and evolution rate when the ethylene partial pressure is 20%. Based on the reduction rate curves of WO 3 and carbon evolution rate curves of C 2 H 4 , the rate equations of pre-reduction and carbon evolution of WO 3 –Co 3 O 4 system at 600 °C are established. The pre-reduction reaction belongs to the first-order reaction, and its equation is expressed as follows: r = − d w WO 3 d t = 9 ± 0.15 × 1 0 − 2 P H 2 0.44 P C 2 H 4 0.57 The carbon deposition rate equation of C 2 H 4 can be expressed as follows: r ' = d c C d t = r f − r b ≅ 7.35 × 1 0 − 2 × P C 2 H 4 0.31
