Preparation of Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts by chemical vapour deposition for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of phenol in a fixed bed reactor

Donglin He,Huiping Zhang,Ying Yan

Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by chemical vapour deposition for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol in a fixed bed reactor. Firstly, Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts with Cu loading of 0.5, 2, and 6 wt% were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The characterization results demonstrated that CuO was uniformly dispersed on ZSM-5 with slight effect on the structure properties of the support. Then, several variables, such as the copper loading, reaction temperature, catalyst bed height and feed flow rate were investigated in the CWPO of phenol in aqueous solution at high concentration (1000 ppm). Compared with the catalyst prepared by the impregnation method, the Cu-ZSM-5 prepared by chemical vapour deposition has a better capacity of further oxidizing the intermediate organic products into carbon dioxide and water with less metal loading. Based on the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst with Cu loading of 6 wt%, complete removal of phenol and a high TOC reduction (around 70%) have been achieved at the temperature of 80°C feed flow rate of 2 ml min−1 and catalyst bed height of 3 cm. Moreover, this catalyst maintained high catalytic activity after three runs with high phenol conversion (94%) under this optimum operating condition. Finally, the reaction mechanism was studied based on the intermediates detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Rapid preparation of SAPO-34/ZSM-5 composite molecular sieves modified by Cu-Ce and Study on its catalytic performance of MTO

Lei Chen,Wenjie Yao,Xu Chen,Gang Yang

The Cu-Ce modified SAPO-34/ZSM-5 (S-Z) composite molecular sieve catalysts were synthesized via a stepwise crystallization process using triethylamine (TEA) and tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) as dual templates. This method significantly reduces the crystallization time from 24 hours to 12 hours. The incorporation of metal ions alters the structure and acid strength of the molecular sieves, thereby decreasing the rate of coke formation during the reaction, which in turn extends the catalyst's lifetime. Experimental results demonstrated that the catalyst's lifetime increased progressively with the addition of Ce. In the methanol-to-olefin reaction, the catalytic lifetime of the S-Z/Cu 0.05 -Ce 0.05 samples reached 1440 mins, approximately 480 mins longer than that of the S-Z samples, while maintaining a selectivity for low-carbon olefins at around 89.6%.

Evidence of water promotes cyclohexanol adsorption and dehydration over H-ZSM-5 zeolite

Hu Yaqi,Liu Runze,Lu Kaiyun,Wu Daoning,Gao Pan,Hou Guangjin,Zhang Hongbo,Dai Weili

Hydrated hydronium ions formed in the pores/cages of zeolite catalysts are suggested as the active species that could impact the adsorption of reactant, the stability of intermediates or transition states, and the reaction mechanism in the aqueous phase alcohol dehydration. Nevertheless, under a typical vapor phase reaction condition, the relevant situation is still debatable. Herein, the promotion of water on cyclohexanol (CyOH) adsorption and dehydration under a vapor phase condition was clarified by in situ 1 H MAS NMR, 2D 1 H DQ MAS NMR and 2D 1 H- 27 Al HMQC NMR spectroscopy, systematic kinetic studies, isotope tracing and thermodynamic measurements. The water promoting effects were ascribed to water facilitating the formation of H 3 O + cluster (H 3 O + (H 2 O) n-1 ), and per Brønsted acid site (BAS) could be saturated by about 5 water at ambient temperature. The CyOH dehydration pathway was found to be highly dependent on the water concentrations, and a dimer reaction route with the C-H bond rupture as the kinetically relevant step (KRS) was verified as the main reaction pathway at high water concentrations. All these findings provide the deep insights into how water regulating the zeolite catalyzed dehydration reaction at a molecular level.

Study on the biomass catalytic pyrolysis over hierarchically porous ZSM-5 catalyst derived from solid wastes by means of photoionization mass spectrometry

Ke Yang,Gang Wu,Bo Zhang,Liangyuan Jia,Huiyan Zhang

Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is one of the most efficient methods for directly converting biomass into green aromatics. Although ZSM-5 catalyst is efficient at producing aromatics, the catalyst deactivation brings challenge to industrial applications. Constructing additional mesoporous structure in ZSM-5 catalyst can overcome this drawback. In this study, two solid wastes are used as raw materials to synthesize hierarchically porous ZSM-5 catalyst based on solvent-free method, aligning with the target of “green chemistry”. Comparing with the commercial ZSM-5 catalyst, the synthesized catalyst achieves a higher BTX yield (benzene, toluene, and xylene), with increases of approximately 44 %, 7 %, and 12 %, respectively. The mesopore-to-micropore volume ratio is a key factor in determining catalytic efficiency. Moreover, PI-MS is used to monitor the deactivation behavior of catalyst online during the CFP process, showing that the synthesized catalyst has a slower deactivation rate. The hierarchically porous structure plays a crucial role in slowing the transformation of oxygenated coke into graphite-like coke, which is a major contributor to catalyst deactivation. This work can provide a green and convenient method for producing hierarchically porous ZSM-5 catalyst and be useful for improving the selectivity of aromatic compounds, offering a promising alternative to conventional ZSM-5 catalyst in industrial applications.

Modulating structural and acidic properties of ZSM-5 to boost dehydration-oligomerization of higher alcohols derived from fermentation ethanol upgrading to bio-jet fuel precursors

Zhonghai Liu,Kaili Wang,Yayun Pang,Chenglei Xiao,Xiaoping Wu,Jinliang Song,Tiejun Wang

One-pot dehydration-oligomerization of biomass-derived alcohols provides a promising strategy for the production of renewable jet fuels, but it is still a great challenge. In this study, the hierarchically porous plate-like HZSM-5 catalysts were constructed to catalyze dehydration-oligomerization of higher alcohols derived from upgrading of fermentation ethanol. It was observed that the P40(0.2) catalyst showed the best performance with the C 8 -C 16 products selectivity of 66.4%. Systematic investigations revealed that the outstanding performance of P40(0.2) originated mainly from the synergistic effect of the finely tuned acidity and the hierarchical porous plate-like structure. Notably, the good activity of P40(0.2) on dehydration-oligomerization of the actual oil phase from ethanol upgrading confirmed the great potential of practical applications for the synthesis of jet fuels from biomass-derived alcohols.

Hierarchical structure ZSM-5/SBA-15 composite with improved hydrophobicity for adsorption-desorption behavior of toluene

Renna Li,Tianshan Xue,Zhe Li,Qiang Wang

Hydrophobic zeolites have been considered as one of the most promising adsorbents for capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this contribution, hierarchically structured ZSM-5/SBA-15 composites with different morphologies including platelet, hexagonal prism, long-hexagonal prism, and long-rod were prepared. All materials were characterized using XRD, SEM, and TEM-EDX, which confirmed that the high dispersion of two zeolites within the composites. Due to the presence of intracrystalline mesopores that could shorten the diffusion pathway of toluene, the composites resulted in increased effective diffusion and higher adsorption capacity. The composites also possess higher hydrophobicity, leading to much better toluene adsorption performance under humid conditions. The water contact angle of ZSM-5 could be increased from 15.6° to 44.9° by forming well dispersed zeolite composites. The 29 Si MAS NMR results confirmed that the composites possess higher amount of Q 4 groups (75.3%–80.1%), which is the intrinsic reason for higher hydrophobicity. Notably, ZSM-5/SBA-15-hexagonal prism resulted in the best adsorption performance and cycling stability when compared with pure ZSM-5, the breakthrough time was increased from 20.8 to 49.4 min under dry conditions and from 5.9 to 27.3 min in the presence of 50% relative humidity. This work represents an important scheme for making hydrophobic zeolite-based VOCs adsorbents with also improved toluene diffusion properties due to the unique hierarchical porous structure.

Acidic Site-Controlled ZSM-5 Catalysts for Fast Molten-Phase Pyrolysis of Plastic Waste with Tunable Product Distribution

Wei Xiong,Ruilong Zhang,Christina H. M. Tsang,Yuehan Jiang,Xinxin Lu,Yuchao Shao,Jun Zhao

The catalytic pyrolysis of plastic waste into fuels has attracted considerable attention due to its potential to address the energy crisis and alleviate public health concerns. However, current catalytic pyrolysis systems for waste plastics still face challenges, such as low efficiency, poor product selectivity, and a lack of monitoring during the pyrolysis process. In this study, highly stable ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts were synthesized with tunable Si/Al ratios for the efficient cracking of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) into oil- and hydrocarbon-rich gases. It was found that a decrease in the Si/Al ratio of the ZSM-5 catalyst enhanced its acidity and cracking efficiency for HDPE, as confirmed through a one-pot melting-catalysis strategy and thermogravimetric analysis. The increased acidity of the ZSM-5 catalyst not only improved the cracking efficiency but also facilitated the regulation of product distribution, offering valuable insights into the design of highly selective catalysts. ZSM-5 (22) exhibited the highest conversion rate, achieving nearly 100% HDPE conversion at 450 °C in 19 min and full conversion at a lower temperature of 350 °C over an extended period, and demonstrated good stability and recyclability. The acidic properties and the aluminum coordination state of the prepared ZSM-5 catalysts were examined with a proposed mechanism for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) cracking based on the acidic sites of ZSM-5. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated its efficacy in the pyrolysis of actual plastic waste. These findings highlight the potential of ZSM-5 catalysts for the cracking of plastic waste through the one-pot melting-catalysis strategy, offering valuable insights to further advance dynamic studies of plastic cracking processes.

Preparation of a hollow b-oriented ZSM-5 zeolite-supported zinc catalyst with enhanced catalytic properties via desilication–recrystallization for methane co-aromatization with propane

Guohao Xu,Jiaqi Liu,Xin Gao,Xuedong Zhu

Hollow b-oriented ZSM-5 with a thickness of approximately 80 nm was synthesized for methane co-aromatization with propane (MCP) through the desilication–recrystallization of b-oriented ZSM-5 using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as a template. A hollow structure was introduced into b-oriented ZSM-5 via desilication with OH− and a thin intact shell was formed during recrystallization of leached Si species under TPA+ template application. By regulating the recrystallization time, shell thicknesses could be controlled from 120 nm to 60 nm. Under a recrystallization time of 24 h, the hollow b-oriented ZSM-5 possessed suitable acidity as well as the largest SBET and daver. When the hollow b-oriented ZSM-5 zeolite was used as the support for a zinc-based catalyst, aromatic selectivity and the conversion of methane and propane were improved. A maximum aromatic selectivity of 87.5% was achieved, with methane and propane conversion of 10.7% and 77.9%, respectively.

Ag-Loaded ZSM-5 Zeolite Functionalized Microarc Oxidated Coatings: A Multifunctional Strategy for Enhanced Antibacterial and Corrosion Resistance of Titanium Alloys

Lei Wu,Kun Zhang,Qiuyan Ye,Yingjie Lv,Jiaqiao Li,Xiaoyan Guo,Yongnan Chen,Yiming Chen

Titanium alloys exhibit excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, making they widely used in medical field. Nevertheless, their practical application is frequently constrained by bacterial infection and corrosion issues in physiological environments. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a novel multifunctional strategy involving the incorporation of Ag + -loaded ZSM-5 zeolites into a micro-arc oxidated (MAO) coating on the surface of titanium alloy to fabricate Ag/ZSM-5@MAO-Ti composite coating. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and functional characteristics of the coating were systematically characterized. Analysis confirmed that Ag/ZSM-5 were evenly dispersed within the MAO coating while preserving the crystal structure intact. By leveraging the mechanical interlocking effect, the particles were securely retained within the micropores of the MAO layer after in-situ hydrothermal secondary growth. The composite coating exhibited exceptional adhesion to the titanium alloy substrate, with an average bond strength of 64   N. Owing to the inherent hydrophilicity of zeolites, the composite coating demonstrated significantly enhanced hydrophilicity with a contact angle of 12.9±0.7°. Antimicrobial tests results revealed that the coating achieved an inhibition rate of more than 99.99% against Escherichia coli (E. coli), and the sustained release of Ag⁺ ensures long-term antimicrobial efficacy. Furthermore, the composite coating displayed superior corrosion resistance in phosphate buffer solution (PBS). In summary, the Ag/ZSM-5 modified MAO coating substantially enhances the antimicrobial properties and corrosion resistance of titanium alloy, offering a promising strategy for the development of advanced medical devices.

Studies on low-temperature degradation for sulfur hexafluoride over sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron supported on zeolite ZSM-5: heterostructures, interfacial activation and fluorine migration

Bowen Zhao,Jianyi Lu,Qing Xu,Fei Zheng,Zhiyong Zhou

Owing to its strong chemical inertness, sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) is intrinsically resistant to degradation. Accordingly, a composite material was developed by coupling sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) with fly ash-derived zeolite ZSM-5, forming a multi-level heterostructure for efficient SF 6 degradation. Experimental results confirmed that the composite exhibited exceptional low-temperature degradation performance, achieving complete removal of 2 vol% SF 6 at 600 °C with a specific degradation amount of 206.1 mL/g. Remarkably, effective degradation was still maintained at 300 °C, surpassing the previously reported minimum temperature limit (∼450 °C) for SF 6 degradation. Kinetic analysis revealed a near-zero-order reaction behavior with an apparent activation energy of only 27.61 kJ/mol, indicating that the initial stage was dominated by adsorption, diffusion, or interfacial electron transfer rather than S F bond cleavage. Comprehensive characterization showed that the composite possessed Fe 0 /FeS and FeS/ZSM-5 dual heterointerfaces, serving simultaneously as adsorption carriers, electron donors and acceptors. Specifically, the microporous framework of ZSM-5 physically confines nonpolar SF 6 molecules through van der Waals and confinement effects, enriching their local concentration and forming a favorable adsorption-activation interface. Electrons released by Fe 0 migrate directionally to these enrichment sites under the drive of the multi-level heterostructure, enabling concurrent adsorption and electron-induced activation of SF 6 , and thereby facilitating S F bond cleavage. The resulting fluoride ions initially react with Fe 0 to generate FeF 3 , which subsequently interacts with the silicate framework to produce SiF 4 , establishing a mediated fluorine migration pathway from SF 6 to SiF 4 and enabling deep degradation with sustained reactivity.

Waste-to-microporous framework: Al/Si fractionation of coal fly ash coupled with waste PET conversion for separated synthesis of high-porosity MIL-53(Al) and ZSM-5 toward efficient dyes and CO2 capture

Ying Wang,Tengfei He,Jingguo Cao,Ke Li,Chengqian Wang,Qun Liu,Yu Zhang

This study demonstrates a sustainable strategy for synthesizing MIL-53(Al) and ZSM-5 zeolite through dual-waste synergy using coal fly ash (CFA) and waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). A sequential alkaline fusion-acid leaching protocol selectively fractionated CFA into aluminum-rich solutions and silica residues, while alkaline hydrolysis of PET liberated terephthalic acid (PTA) as organic ligands. The Al 3+ -PTA coordination under solvothermal conditions produced MIL-53(Al)(CFA-PET) exhibiting well-defined 1D rhombic channels with a high BET surface area (1303 m 2 ·g −1 ), whereas hydrothermal crystallization of silica residues yielded ZSM-5(CFA), which formed spherical aggregates composed of 100 nm nanosheets with 89.9 % yield and a surface area of 311 m 2 ·g −1 . Structural advantages were evidenced by exceptional adsorption performance: MIL-53(Al)(CFA-PET) achieved 96.24 % methylene blue removal at pH 7 (250 mg·L −1 ), outperforming rhodamine B (30.8 %) and methyl orange (66.4 %), as well as reagent-synthesized MIL-53(Al) Che (91.99 %). Both materials demonstrated exceptional CO 2 capture capacities (4.23 mmol·g −1 for MIL-53(Al)(CFA-PET) vs. 2.37 mmol·g −1 for ZSM-5(CFA) at 273 K/1 bar), attributable to MIL-53′s flexible framework enabling dynamic pore adjustment and ZSM-5′s rigid microporous channels favoring molecular sieving. This work establishes a closed-loop strategy for converting industrial and plastic wastes into functionally differentiated porous materials through element-targeted process design.

Al-Sn bimetallic ZSM-5: Acidity regulation and excellent performance in cracking n-hexane for production of light olefins

Xiangfei Ding,Youbing Zhu,Ketao Shi,Zhen Xu,Jian Chen,Zengxi Li,Hui Wang

ZSM-5 zeolite is extensively employed for hydrocarbons cracking to generate light olefins, and its acidity is closely related to the activity and product distribution. In this work, Al-Sn bimetallic ZSM-5 was prepared via a “one-pot” route. Characterizations, including XRD, UV–Vis, XPS, revealed that Sn species were mainly embedded into the zeolite framework as tetrahedral Sn (IV). Moreover, the Sn atoms promoted the formation of Lewis acid sites and reduced the Brønsted acid amount, which effectively inhibited occurrence of side reactions ( e.g. , aromatization, hydrogen transfer) and improved the selectivity of light olefins in n-hexane cracking. Light olefins yield over HZ5[100,200] (Si/Al = 100, Si/Sn = 200) reached 33.4 % due to the appropriate acid property, in comparison with only 15.4 % for HZ5[50,∞] (Si/Al = 50, Si/Sn=∞) containing system. Through optimization of reaction conditions, better catalytic performance (n-hexane conversion of 91.6 % and light olefins yield of 37.6 %) was obtained over HZ5[100,200] under 575 °C with WHSV of 2 h −1 .
