It is a promising strategy to effectively promote “carbon neutrality” by reducing CO2 to small energy molecules through photocatalysis technology. However, due to low light utilization and recombination of photogenerated carriers, photocatalysts usually have low activity and low selectivity for products. Herein, a hollow spherical ZnS/ZnO heterojunction with a spatial confinement effect photocatalyst was synthesized toward CO2 photoreduction through preciously controlling the nano-/microstructure. The local lattice distortions were introduced into the surface of the hollow ZnS/ZnO microsphere, which activated lattice oxygen and provided additional active reaction sites. Furthermore, the heterojunction constructed between ZnS and ZnO interfaces facilitated the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Combined with the natural advantage of enhanced light capture and absorption for a hollow confined structure, as a result, the systemic design in the electronic and confined structures for the photocatalyst has brought an excellent CO2 reduction performance with a CO yield rate as high as 35.85 μmol g–1h–1 and durability under a 300 W Xe lamp irradiation without any sacrificial agent and cocatalyst.

Vertically aligned quasi two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanorods (NRs) on carbon fiber paper were prepared by a modified hydrothermal approach, an individual ZnO nanorod has a diameter of 100–200 nm and a length of ~1 µm. ZnO/ZnS core-hell hierarchal structures with an outer ZnS shell of ~25 nm were fabricated under an elaborate sulfidation treatment. Compared to ZnO NRs a depressed near band emission at 380 nm and a significant enhanced visible light emission around 500 nm were observed for the ZnO/ZnS core-hell NRs from photoluminescence spectra. XPS and ESR measurements were carried out to study the ions constituents and the defects of the prepared samples. The prepared samples were used as photoelectrodes in visible-light self-powered photoelectrochemical cell-type detector. And an enhanced photocurrent of 6.79 µA was obtained, which is ten times as high as that of the bare ZnO electrode. The results show that the existence of sulfur vacancies and the formation of ZnO/ZnS heterostructure were able to promote photocurrent performance, the former increases the carrier concentration and leads to an upshift of work function; the latter makes the band bend and the photogenerated e–p pairs can be separated efficiently. The results will be helpful to implement visible-light device based on heterostructure via interfacial engineering.

This work has assembled ZnSe:Mn/ZnS quantum dots (QDs)-monoclonal anti-microcystin-Leucine Arginine (anti-MC-LR) antibody bioconjugates as a room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) probe using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyllaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-Hydroxysuccinimide chemistry for detecting MC-LR. Once the specific interactions occurred between these MCs and their antibodies on the surface of ZnSe:Mn/ZnS QDs, the RTP of ZnSe:Mn/ZnS QDs was quenched with the increased concentration of MC-LR. Under the optimised conditions, the linear range of MC-LR was determined to be 0.9–8.8 nM. The linear relationship between ( P 0 – P )/ P 0 and concentration of MC-LR were observed with the regression equation ( P 0 – P )/ P 0 = 0.03908C + 0.0456 with the detection limit of 0.038 nM. The developed RTP immunoassay favoured environmental applications since the interference from autofluorescence and scattering light was greatly eliminated.

Transition metal ions doping has been an effective method to optimize the optical properties of quantum dots (QDs) and attracted much interest in recent years. In this work, Cu doped InP/ZnS (Cu:InP/ZnS) QDs have been synthesized via a nucleation-doping method and exhibit dual emission which consists of the intrinsic emission and the dopant emission. With the incremental Cu concentration from 0% to 10%, the dopant emission could be largely tuned from 598 to 707 nm. After introducing Ag ions into Cu:InP/ZnS QDs, the photoluminance (PL) intensity of dual emission gets remarkably enhanced with a PL quantum yield (QY) of 79%, while the emission peak positions change marginally. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved PL spectroscopy measurement, it can be concluded that the dopant emission color is mainly dominated by Cu while Ag is conducive to improve the dual emission of Cu and Ag co-doped InP/ZnS QDs. These results would contribute to further understanding dopant-dependent interaction and render this new class of single-phased and dual-emissive QDs a promising future to be applied in white LED.

Two-dimensional (2D) ZnS-SnS 2 porous nanosheets are designed as clean and low cost photocatalysts for water splitting. The composites successfully combine high photoelectron reduction potential of ZnS with the sufficient sunlight harvesting ability of SnS 2 . Moreover, SnS 2 acts as an effective electron transfer medium from ZnS to SnS 2 due to the construction of quasi-type II structure. This greatly promotes the transfer of electron-hole pairs and effectively inhibits their recombination. Especially, the unique porous nanosheets structure maintains them high specific surface area and countless reactive sites, which increases the reactants' contact area and facilitates the migration of carriers upon photocatalysis . This further suppresses the charge recombination and improves the photocatalysts' stability. As a result, an optimized specific surface area of 246.7 m 2 g −1 and photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of 536 μmol h −1 g −1 are achieved in the absence of a surfactant and co-catalyst, which is 10 times higher than ZnS and 17 times higher than SnS 2 . In addition, the porous nanosheets have fairly good photocatalytic stability and can be reused at least five cycles without obvious changes in activity and structure. This work successfully presents the potential of ZnS and SnS 2 -based photocatalyst for clean and low cost hydrogen production from water splitting.

Refractive index (RI) is an important parameter for contact lens biomaterials. In this paper, a novel polymerizable-group capped ZnS nanoparticle (NP) was synthesized by chemical link between hydroxyl group on the surface of ZnS (ME-capped) and isocyanate group of polymerizable molecule of 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate. Then the ZnS NP copolymerized with monomer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N , N -dimethylacrylamide (DMA) to prepare high refractive index hydrogel contact lens with high content of inorganic ZnS NP. Increasing polymerizable-group capped ZnS content in the hydrogels improved its RI value and mechanical properties, however decreased slightly its transmittance, equilibrium (ESR) and lysozyme deposition on the hydrogel surface. The ZnS-containing hydrogels possessed good cytocompatibility and in vivo biocompatibility in rabbit eyes, demonstrating a potential application as high RI ocular refractive correction biomaterial.

The aim of the present study was to develop a water-soluble biomarker for the detection of breast cancer using quantum dots (QDs) conjugated to Ki‑67, a nuclear protein associated with the cell cycle. Ki‑67 is also a marker of cell proliferation, with expression levels categorizing good and poor prognosis in invasive breast cancer. Ki‑67 is a clinically used biomarker for breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Owing to the optical and chemical advantages of QDs, QD‑based nanotechnology may aid the construction of a biomedical imaging platform for the study of cancer cell behavior. In the present study, a biomarker was prepared by employing the water‑soluble CuInS2/ZnS QDs conjugated to an anti‑Ki‑67 monoclonal antibody to detect Ki‑67 expression in breast cancer. The QDs, which were hydrophobic and coated with octadecylamine, were encapsulated with an amphiphilic biocompatible centipede‑like polymer, and then conjugated to anti‑Ki‑67 monoclonal antibodies (QD‑Ki‑67 probes). The QD‑Ki‑67 probes retained the original optical properties of the unadorned QDs and did not exhibit distinct toxic side effects in in vitro cytotoxicity experiments. Therefore, this CuInS2/ZnS QD‑labeled bioprobe, with a high quantum yield and low cytotoxicity, is a promising candidate for bioimaging and may be used as a cell label.

Quantum dots (QDs) are excellent fluorescent indicators for chemical and biological analysis. In this paper, an Off-Off fluorescence sensor based on ZnS quantum dots was designed. It was found that Co 2+ can quench the fluorescence of ZnS QDs, moreover glutathione (GSH) can further quench the fluorescence. Therefore, this method can be used for indirect detection of GSH. However, if change Co 2+ into other metal ions, the system cannot be used to detect GSH indirectly. For direct detection GSH, that is adding GSH without Co 2+ , the fluorescence intensity changes little, while only amino acid or monosaccharide has no effect. When indirect detection of GSH based on this Off-Off fluorescent probe, the fluorescence quenching was linearly related to the concentration range of 1–300 μM GSH, and the detection limit could reach 0.48 μM, which can rival most Off-On and On-Off fluorescent probe. The relative standard deviation for parallel measurement of 300 μmol·L -1 GSH solution (for n = 10) was 1.43 %.

The reduction of CO 2 to chemical fuel driven by solar energy can not only meet the growing demand for renewable energy, but also balance the carbon cycle in nature. However, the current photocatalysts have low CO 2 conversion due to their poor light capture ability, narrow light response range, and high recombination probability of photogenerated carriers. Herein, a heterogeneous photocatalyst of hollow structured ZnO/ZnS decorated with Pt nanoparticles is synthesized through the hydrothermal process and photodeposition method, showing excellent photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction in long-time stability and ≈100% CO selectivity, which can mainly contribute to natural enhanced light-capture ability of the hollow confined space due to multiple reflection and scattering of light in the cavity, thus improving separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers due to the type II junction constructed between ZnO and ZnS and the additional reaction active sites after decorating Pt nanoparticles in the surface of the hollow structure.

Indium phosphide (InP) Quantum dots (QDs) are becoming one of the most favorable alternatives of cadmium-based QDs in view of their heavy metal-free and tunable luminescence. However, the photoluminescence performances of InP QDs still remain to be improved especially for the aminophosphine based synthesis method. In this work, we present a one-pot synthesis route of InP/ZnS red QDs based on tris(dimethylamino)phosphine (DMP) phosphorus precursor by using ZnF 2 to generate HF and F ions in situ for the elimination of surface oxidative layer of InP cores and the passivation of indium dangling bonds. The synthesis conditions in terms of ZnF 2 concentration, reaction temperature and growth time, were further investigated in order to obtain an optimization of fluorescence properties of InP QDs. It is found that the PL QY of both InP and InP/ZnS QDs are significantly improved by the ZnF 2 additive. The PL QY of ∼16.4%, FWHM of 50 nm for pristine InP QDs and PL QY of ∼73%, emission peak of 628 nm, FWHM of 55 nm for ZnS shelled InP QDs can be obtained when the ratio of ZnF 2 to ZnCl 2 , reaction temperature and growth time are 1:1, 200 °C and 40 min, respectively. Compared with the InP/ZnS QDs synthesized without ZnF2 treatment (55% PL QY, 611 nm emission peak, 62 nm FWHM), the PL QY is increased by 32.7%.

g-C 3 N 4 was employed as a modified substance for modification engineering of wurtzite-ZnS photocatalysts to overcome its limited light response and stability. The g-C 3 N 4 /ZnS (CNZS) photocatalyst was synthesized by solvothermal reaction of g-C 3 N 4 , thiourea and zinc acetate. The results show that wurtzite-ZnS spheres were loaded on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 with well uniformed size. The photocatalytic activity of the catalyst was determined by the degradation of MB and Rh.B under visible light. The degradation rates of Rh.B and MB by CNZS were 96% and 97%, much better than that of pure ZnS. The addition of g-C 3 N 4 promoted the visible light response of wurtzite-ZnS and inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electrons with holes. The density functional theory (DFT) results indicated that the components of both valence band and conductive band were changed for the CNZS system. Compared to pure ZnS, the band gap of CNZS was decreased about 0.5 eV, and the work function calculations were in good agreement with the experimental results. As a result, the heterostructure of CNZS made it beneficial to the electron transfer from g-C 3 N 4 (2p of N) to ZnS (3p of S) and absorption edge has been extended to about 600 nm.

A new ZnS/CdS heterojunction is constructed through the direct sulfurization of a metal ions exchanged Zn/Cd-MOF precursor(MOF=metal-organic framework material). The composition, structure, morphology, photoabsorption and photoelectric performance of the ZnS/CdS are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM), diffuse reflection spectrum(DRS), photoelectric current(PEC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and photoluminescence(PL) technologies. Since the metal ions are highly orderly separated by the organic ligands and the inherent porosity of the Zn/Cd-MOF, the as-synthesized ZnS/CdS possesses a large surface area and intimate contact at the heterogeneous interface with uniform ZnS/CdS nanoparticles. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the ZnS/CdS is investigated under visible light irradiation(λ⩾420 nm). It exhibits enhanced photocatalytic performance that the optimal ZnS/CdS achieves a maximum average hydrogen production rate of 2348 µmol·h −1 ·g −1 . A possible electron transfer mechanism is therefore proposed by the analyses of the Mott-Schottky plots.
