Arbutin and 6′-O-caffeoylarbutin (CA) fromVaccinium dunalianumWight are known for their ability to inhibit melanin synthesis. To boost the production of arbutin and CA, precursor feeding with hydroquinone (HQ) was studied inV. dunalianumsuspension cells. The effect of HQ on the biosynthesis of arbutin and CA in the suspension cells was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and possible molecular mechanisms were analyzed using metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses. HPLC analysis only showed that the addition of HQ significantly enhanced arbutin synthesis in cells, peaking at 15.52 ± 0.28 mg·g−1after 0.5 mmol·L−1HQ treatment for 12 h. Subsequently, metabolomics identified 78 differential expression metabolites (DEMs), of which arbutin and CA were significantly up-regulated metabolites. Moreover, transcriptomics found a total of 10,628 differential expression genes (DEGs). The integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics revealed that HQ significantly enhanced the expression of two arbutin synthase (AS) genes (Unigene0063512 and Unigene0063513), boosting arbutin synthesis. Additionally, it is speculated that CA was generated from arbutin and 3,4,5-tricaffeoylquinic acid catalyzed by caffeoyl transferase, with Unigene0044545, Unigene0043539, and Unigene0017356 as potentially associated genes with CA synthesis. These findings indicate that the precursor feeding strategy offers a promising approach for the mass production of arbutin and CA inV. dunalianumsuspension cells and provides new insights for CA biosynthesis inV. dunalianum.

It is very meaningful to develop simple and effective methods for detecting hazardous substances. Herein, a newly-designed Mn 3 O 4 -based composite with oxygen vacancy is synthesized and employed as oxidase-like mimic for conducting chromogenic analysis. After loading Mn 3 O 4 in hollow carbon sphere (HCS), the hydrophobicity of Mn 3 O 4 is remarkably enhanced, thereby creating a microscopic three-phase interface to boost the capturing ability towards O 2 . Interestingly, hollow structure of HCS can provide the spatial confinement effect for Mn 3 O 4 , shortening mass transfer process and improving catalytic activity. Thus, HCS/Mn 3 O 4 composite possesses low interfacial resistance and rapid charge transfer rate. More importantly, HCS/Mn 3 O 4 composite can simulate the activity of oxidase-like mimics, which can oxidize colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl benzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB) in a short time. Further analysis indicates that O 2 •− plays an important role, and the direct oxidation of TMB over HCS/Mn 3 O 4 composite also plays a part in the color reaction of TMB. Based on the cascade reactions among TMB, HCS/Mn 3 O 4 and target compound (namely hydroquinone and Cr 6+ ), a simple chromogenic sensing method with broad linear range and low LOD for detecting hydroquinone and Cr 6+ is proposed. In short, current study can give a valuable reference for the design of enzyme mimics and the research on chromogenic mechanism.

Mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycling involves redox transformations between Hg(0) and Hg(II), likely via a mercurous Hg(I) intermediate. Despite previously thought metastable, Hg(I) was found to exist stably in natural waters; yet, the redox behavior governing Hg(I) occurrence remains elusively studied. Here, we simulated an environmental Eh gradient (0.219–0.600 V, vs SHE) using noninterfering 1,4-benzoquinone and 1,4-hydroquinone as redox mediators, and demonstrate that Hg(I) redox transformations are strongly Eh-dependent. Hg(I) was stable at 0.302–0.339 V, contrasting significant oxidation (19–98%) at 0.369–0.600 V or reduction (81%) at 0.219–0.255 V. Speciation analysis and thermodynamic calculations confirm that varying proton level alters Hg(II) species abundance (HgHPO4, HgPO4–, and Hg(OH)2), driving this Eh-dependence. Specifically, HgHPO4/HgPO4– exhibits lower reduction potentials (to Hg(I), as Hg2(OH)2) than Hg(OH)2. Consequently, Hg(I) is subject to oxidation to HgHPO4/HgPO4– at 0.369–0.440 V (pH 6.0), while Hg(OH)2 preferentially undergoes stepwise reduction to Hg(I) and Hg(0) at 0.236–0.308 V (pH 7.5). Additionally, externally forced Hg(0) removal processes, e.g., purging used in conventional Hg(0) analysis, significantly affect Hg(I) transformations and enhance Hg reduction under reducing conditions, whereas natural degassing has negligible effects. This work provides valuable parameters for Hg redox thermodynamics and important implications for predicting Hg(I) occurrence in aquatic environments.

A sensitive electrochemical sensor decorated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes and molybdenum carbide (MWCNTs-MoxCy) was successfully developed in this study for the simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and o-hydroxyaniline (OHX). The MWCNTs-MoxCy nanomaterials were synthesized by high temperature calcination under nitrogen protection, and the morphologies and elements were characterized and analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), respectively. The MWCNTs-MoxCy composite was ultrasonically dispersed into a modification liquid to construct the modified the glassy carbon electrode, and cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronocoulometry (CC) were used to study the electrochemical performance. In phosphate buffer solution, the synthetic materials displays good redox peaks for hydroquinone (HQ) and o-hydroxyaniline (OHX). The synthesized composite has a large effective surface area, high electron transfer rate and catalytic activity. Under optimum experimental conditions, the MWCNTs-MoxCy/GCE exhibits linear responses to HQ and OHX in the range of 0.1-900.0 μM and 0.8-20.0 μM, respectively, with a limit of determination (S/N=3) calculated to be 0.075 μM and 0.047 μM, respectively. The method was applied to measure the concentrations of these compounds in real water samples and achieved satisfactory results.

The gene encoding the tumor suppressor, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), located on chromosome 10, is frequently expressed at low levels in various tumors, resulting in the stimulation of cell proliferation and migration. However, the role of exosomal PTEN in cell-cell communication during the progress of benzene-induced carcinogenesis remains unclear. The goal of this study was to explore whether exosomes derived from normal human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE) could transmit PTEN to hydroquinone-transformed malignant recipient cells (16HBE-t) and its possible effects on cell proliferation and migration. Consistent with PTEN expression being down-regulated in transformed cells, we found that its expression was significantly decreased in 16HBE-t relative to 16HBE cells and that purified exosomes secreted by 16HBE, up-regulated PTEN levels in recipient 16HBE-t cells. Thus, down-regulating their proliferation and migration. Further, when exosomes derived from 16HBE cells that had been treated with the PTEN inhibitor SF1670, were incubated with recipient 16HBE-t cells, they exhibited decreased PTEN levels, with a corresponding increase in their proliferation and migration. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that exosomes derived from 16HBE cells can down-regulate proliferation and migration of recipient 16HBE-t cells via transferring PTEN.

In this paper, the reduced graphene oxide and multiwall carbon nanotubes hybrid materials (RGO–MWNTs) were prepared and a strategy for detecting environmental contaminations was proposed on the basis of RGO–MWNTs modified electrode. The hybrid materials were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N 2 sorption–desorption isotherms. Due to the excellent catalytic activity, enhanced electrical conductivity and high surface area of the RGO–MWNTs, the simultaneous measurement of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), p-cresol (PC) and nitrite (NO 2 − ) with four well-separate peaks was achieved at the RGO–MWNTs modified electrode. The linear response ranges for HQ, CC, PC and NO 2 − were 8.0–391.0 μM, 5.5–540.0 μM, 5.0–430.0 μM and 75.0–6060.0 μM, correspondingly, and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 2.6 μM, 1.8 μM, 1.6 μM and 25.0 μM, respectively. The outstanding film forming ability of RGO–MWNTs hybrid materials endowed the modified electrode enhanced stability. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor was applied for the simultaneous determination of HQ, CC, PC and NO 2 − in the river water sample.

An efficient method for the analysis of hydroquinone at trace levels in water samples has been developed in the form of a fluorescent probe based on graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The analytical variable, fluorescence quenching, was generated from the formation of benzoquinone intermediates, which formed during the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone by horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In general, the reaction mechanism involved hydroquinone, as an electron acceptor, which affected the surface state of GQDs via an electron transfer effect. The water-soluble GQDs were directly prepared by the pyrolysis of citric acid and with the use of the mentioned hybrid enzyme system, the detection limit for hydroquinone was as low as 8.4 × 10−8 M. Furthermore, this analysis was almost unaffected by other phenol and quinine compounds, such as phenol, resorcinol and other quinines, and therefore, the developed GQD method produced satisfactory results for the analysis of hydroquinone in several different lake water samples.

Accumulating evidence reveals that exosome plays an important role in cell-to-cell communication in both physiological and pathological processes by transferring bioactive molecules. However, the role of exosomal secretion in the adaption of its source cells to the stimuli of environmental chemicals remains elusive. In this study, we revealed that the exposure of hydroquinone (HQ; the main bioactive metabolite of benzene) to human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE) resulted in decreased ability of cell proliferation and migration, and simultaneously DNA damage and micronuclei formation. Interestingly, when exosomal secretion of HQ treated 16HBE cells was inhibited with the inhibitor GW4869, cellular proliferation and migration were further significantly reduced; concurrently, their DNA damage and micronuclei formation were both further significantly aggravated. Herein, we conclude that exosomal secretion of 16HBE cells may be an important self-protective function against the toxic effects induced by HQ.

X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical techniques are used to characterize the composition , morphology and electrochemical properties of the modified electrode . The sensor exhibits strong electrocatalytical activity towards the oxidation of HQ and CC for the higher specific surface area of Cd-ZnWO 4 nanoneedles, fluent electron transfer capacity and the synergistic effect of inorganic Cd-ZnWO 4 and organic PNA. Wide linear ranges are obtained as 1–56 μM for HQ and 2–35 μM for CC, with the detection limits of 0.17 μM and 0.03 μM, in the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) determination of HQ and CC, respectively. Satisfactory repeatability, stability and anti-interference performance are also achieved on PNA (ii)/Cd(0.02)-ZnWO 4 /CPE. Meanwhile, the proposed sensor realizes the detection of CC and HQ spiked in local tap water samples successfully.

In this report, gold nanoparticle–graphene nanohybrids (Au–GR) and 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT–SH) were synthesized. And a novel hybrid material MWCNT–SH@Au–GR was obtained by the interaction between gold nanoparticles of two dimensional (2D) Au–GR and SH groups of 1D MWCNT–SH. Due to the synergistic effects between MWCNT–SH and Au–GR and excellent film forming ability of MWCNT–SH@Au–GR, the obtained MWCNT–SH@Au–GR was used as a modifier to fabricate a chemically modified electrode for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), resorcinol (RC) and nitrite (NO2−). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the morphology of MWCNT–SH@Au–GR. The electrochemical behavior of the sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques. Results showed that it was feasible to simultaneously measure HQ, CC, RC and NO2−. The linear response ranges for HQ, CC, RC and NO2− were 54.5–1250.5 μM, 11.0–126.0 μM, 43.5–778.5 μM and 86.0–7500.0 μM and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 4.17 μM, 1.00 μM, 7.80 μM and 23.5 μM, respectively.

The ecological environment and public safety are seriously threatened by the typical phenolic contaminant hydroquinone (HQ). Here, using a straightforward physical mixing technique, we created an n - n heterojunction by uniformly immobilizing cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles on the surface of a three-dimensionally layered, flower-like structure made of tin sulfide (SnS 2 ). Then, as photosensitizers , carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to the CdS/SnS 2 complex to create a type-II heterostructure of CdS/SnS 2 /CNTs with synergistic effects. Subsequently, the detector HQ was bound to the modified photoelectrodes , which was accompanied by the hole oxidation of the bound HQ, leading to a significant increase in the photocurrent signal, thus allowing specific and sensitive detection of HQ. Under optimized detection conditions, the proposed photoelectrochemical sensor shows a wide detection range of 0.2 to 100 μM for HQ with a detection limit as low as 0.1 μM. The high accuracy of the sensor was demonstrated by comparison with the detection results of UV–vis spectrophotometry . In addition, the photoelectrochemical sensor exhibits good reproducibility, stability, selectivity , and specificity, providing a light-driven method to detect HQ.

A glassy carbon electrode was modified with carbon nanofragments and bismuth oxide, and the resulting electrode (CNF-Bi/GCE) was applied to the voltammetric determination of catechol (CC) in the presence of a large excess (>100-fold) of hydroquinone (HQ). The CNF-Bi was synthesized by anchoring bismuth oxide on CNFs in a hydrothermal and calcining process. Compared to CNF-modified GCE and bare GCE, the CNF-Bi/GCE exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activity with respect to the redox reaction of CC (at 0.28 V vs. SCE) and HQ (at 0.15 V). Differential pulse voltammetry was applied to quantify traces of CC in the presence of excess HQ. The calibration plot is linear in the 3 to 20 μmol L −1 concentration range, with a 0.2 μmol L −1 detection limit (at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3). These results indicate the CNF-Bi/GCE is a promising sensor for analyzing trace isomers of dihydroxybenzene. In addition, it is also applicable to the determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine, resorcin, and rutin.
