Co-doping of heteroatoms into the support of metal-supported catalysts is a prevalent method to improve the catalytic performance by adjusting metal–support interactions. This paper investigated the catalytic performances of Ru supported on biomass-derived char (Ru@Char), N-doped char (Ru@N-Char), and N,P-co-doped char (Ru@NP-Char) in the emerging lignin-first depolymerization for both poplar (hardwood) and pine (softwood) samples, with an emphasis on the production of phenolic monomers. Various characterizations of the prepared catalysts showed that the codoping of N,P not only facilitated the formation of micropores in the char but also introduced weak and moderate acid sites. Furthermore, the sizes of Ru nanoparticles on the codoped char became smaller, and the proportion of metallic Ru species was increased, resulting from electron transfer from Ru to the codoped char. The yields of the phenolic monomers from poplar and pine over Ru@NP-Char were as high as 57.98 and 17.53 wt % Klason lignin, respectively, which were improved by factors of 1.4–2.5 in comparison to Ru@Char and Ru@N-Char. Full delignification during the depolymerization of both poplar and pine was also achieved over Ru@NP-Char.

Ru 1 /Mg(OH) 2 enables hydrogen-free catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose in water. • Single-atom Ru anchored on defect-rich Mg(OH) 2 forms active Ru–O–Mg sites. • C α –OH of β–O–4 linkages acts as an intrinsic hydrogen source for cleavage. • DFT reveals a low-barrier dehydrogenation-assisted β–O–4 scission pathway. • Up to 50.7 wt% aromatic monomers are produced without external hydrogen. Lignin-first biorefining offers a promising route for producing renewable aromatic chemicals; however, most reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) strategies rely on external hydrogen, limiting their scalability and safety. Here, we report a Ru 1 /Mg(OH) 2 catalyst that enables self‑hydrogen supplied catalytic fractionation (SCF) of lignocellulose in water without external H 2 . The catalyst delivers a remarkably high lignin monomer yield of 50.7 wt% from birch sawdust, approaching the theoretical maximum. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, TEM, XAFS, XPS, Raman, and ESR) reveals that Ru is predominantly atomically dispersed on Mg(OH) 2 and interacts strongly with proton-missing oxygen defects to form unique Ru–O–Mg interfacial sites. These sites generate highly basic oxygen species that promote C α –OH dehydrogenation and subsequently facilitate β–O–4 bond cleavage. Model compound studies confirm that the C α –OH group serves as the intrinsic hydrogen donor, while isotope-labeling experiments and kinetic analysis identify C α –H activation as the rate-determining step. Density functional theory calculations further establish that the dehydrogenation-assisted β–O–4 cleavage pathway has the lowest activation barrier (0.31 eV), validating the endogenous hydrogen mechanism. Collectively, this study provides fundamental insights into hydrogen-free lignin depolymerization and establishes Ru 1 /Mg(OH) 2 as a highly efficient platform for green and scalable lignocellulose valorization. It is significant to efficiently and feasibly produce high-performance jet fuel from renewable biomass. We reported here that lignin-derived phenolics can be alkylated by cellulose-derived cyclopentanol in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor packed with HUSY zeolite without the use of solvents. Under nitrogen pressure, the liquid-phase reaction was achieved. Among the investigated zeolites with different structures and SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , HUSY-150 exhibited excellent catalytic performance and stability. By adjusting reaction conditions, almost complete conversion of cyclopentanol was achieved, as well as high phenol conversion (∼70 %), and high polycyclic product selectivity (>95 %) over HUSY-150. Afterwards, we extended the range of feedstock from phenol to other phenolics (guaiacol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, and lignin oil surrogates), and even at a high LHSV (liquid hourly space velocity) of 36 mL/(g cat ·h), HUSY-150 maintained robust catalytic activity. This study demonstrates a feasible and effective method for producing high-performance jet fuel blends using lignocellulose-derived compounds.

Abstract A linear pH-responsive zwitterionic copolymer P(MDB) was synthesized from functional monomers methacrylic acid, 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMA) and benzyl methacrylate (BMA) through free radical polymerization to recover cellulases and enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis. The hydrophobicity and molecular weight of the copolymer was controlled by the feed ratio of monomers and the mass ratio of initiator to monomers, respectively. UV-turbidity showed P(MDB) exhibited sensitive pH-responsiveness with dissolution–precipitation ΔpH about 1 pH unit. The precipitation pH φ of P(MDB) was 5.0–5.5 and over 90% of P(MDB) could precipitate in the vicinity of its isoelectric point. Increasing the hydrophobicity or molecular weight of P(MDB) could improve its pH sensitivity and precipitation rate. P(MDB) could enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of dilute acid pretreated Eucalyptus by 10–25%. P(MDB) could recover the free cellulases in enzymatic hydrolysate by co-precipitation. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that P(MDB) could recover 100% β-glucosidase (β-GL) and the recovery rates of cellobiohydrolase (CBH) and endoglucanase (EG) increased as the hydrophobicity and molecular weight of P(MDB) increased. The mechanism was proposed that hydrophobic affiliation was the main binding force of P(MDB) to cellulases. Increasing the hydrophobicity and molecular weight of copolymer could increase its binding force and the number of binding sites to cellulases thus the overall cellulase recovery performance was improved. Fractionation of softwood lignocellulose poses challenges due to its relatively high lignin content and complex interlinkages. In this study, an acidified deep eutectic solvent (choline chloride/ethylene glycol with 1 wt% AlCl₃) was employed to effectively fractionate Chinese fir chips into cellulose-rich and lignin fractions, achieving good to excellent yields. The cellulose-rich fraction was directly valorized into lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) with a high yield. The prepared LCNFs were utilized as functional nanofillers in waterborne polyurethane wood coatings (WWC), resulting in an increase in tensile strength from 15.2 ± 0.35 MPa to 18.5 ± 0.43 MPa with the optimal addition of 0.5 wt% LCNFs. Furthermore, the addition of LCNFs significantly improved the coating properties, including hardness and wear resistance. The remaining lignin in the LCNFs imparted excellent optical properties to the WWC film, imparting a warm amber hue and improved texture convexity after coating. Analysis of the lignin fractions revealed a high total content of β-O-4 linkages. Following a catalytic hydrogen transfer depolymerization process, 9.8 wt% of propylguaiacol was obtained with near-quantitative selectivity. This study highlights the effectiveness of acidified deep eutectic solvents in the refinery of softwood lignocellulose, providing a novel pathway for the production of value-added bio-based nanomaterials and chemicals.

Renewable materials derived from lignocellulose are promising materials for different practical applications, including biomedical, food, and agricultural fields. However, the poor mechanical performance and wet stability restrict their applications. Herein, we fabricated PVA/lignocellulose/PBAT (PVA/CLM/PBAT) composite with a “sandwich” structure. Cellulose-lignin mixture (CLM) was prepared by deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment of corn straw. It served as a reinforcing scaffold of Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) film for improving mechanical properties, UV blocking and decrease water permeability. Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) was used as “protector” with PVA/CLM composites by solvent coating method. The tensile strength of PVA/CLM/PBAT is 63.92 MPa. The results show that 27.93 MPa of tensile strength and 179.98 % of elongation at break of PVA/CLM/PBAT are achieved after immersing in water for 2 h, which was remarkable higher than that of PVA/CLM without PBAT coating (4.78 MPa and 111.43 %, respectively). The bonding strength of PVA/CLM/PBAT is 2.44 ± 0.06 N/15 mm. The hydrogen bonds, π-π interaction between PBAT, PVA, and CLM enhance the bonding strength of PVA/CLM/PBAT composites. The water absorption rate of PVA/CLM/PBAT is only 4.4 % after 20 h, which showed a remarkable water resistance. 25 wt% CLM content in PVA/CLM/PBAT composite can fully shield ultraviolet at 200–800 nm, indicating that the remarkable UV shielding capability.

A superhydrophobic CNF/PDA composite membrane has been developed to revolutionize oily wastewater treatment for achieving high efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. Inspired by the adhesive properties of mussels and the self-cleaning mechanism of lotus leaves, this innovative material is fabricated through a novel lyophilization and spray modification process using cellulose nanofibers (CNF), dopamine hydrochloride (DA), and octadecylamine (ODA). The membrane is synthesized via an aerobic, weakly alkaline self-polymerization process, which facilitates the formation of robust covalent and non-covalent bonds between the catecholamine structure of DA and CNF. ODA is integrated through hydrogen bonding and Schiff base reactions with polydopamine (PDA), enhancing structural stability. The resulting membrane demonstrates a tensile strength of 2.9 MPa, alongside exceptional separation efficiency (98.5 %) and flux rates (3745 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). Even after five consecutive water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion separation cycles, a separation efficiency exceeding 91.8 % is maintained, with hydrophobicity and structural integrity preserved. Durability tests confirm its robustness, with 98.5 % of initial capacity retained after ten adsorption-desorption cycles. The membrane's porous architecture and photothermal brown-black hue synergistically boost light-to-heat conversion, facilitating swift thermal response and efficient high-viscosity oil uptake. This demonstrates viable applications as a sustainable solution for oily wastewater treatment, promoting greener industrial application.

Lignocellulose biomass, a plentiful and renewable resource found in abundance on Earth, holds significant promise in reforming into H 2 and value-added biochemicals like lactic acid through photocatalytic technology. However, the efficient photorefinery encounters challenges, including the recombination of photo-induced carriers, poor H 2 evolution, and slow biomass oxidation. Here, we report a bimetallic catalyst supported on layered carbon nitride (PtRh/CN) for lignocellulose photoreforming. This catalyst combines the synergistic effects of Pt and Rh, enhancing both the absorption of visible light and the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. The optimal catalyst achieves a high hydrogen production rate of 6.1 mmol g −1 h −1 and a lactic acid yield of 92.9 %. Mechanistic studies using specific scavengers demonstrate that e − , h + , 1 O 2 , ⋅O 2 − , and ⋅OH species all facilitate the simultaneous production of hydrogen and lactic acid. This study not only advances the efficient utilization of lignocellulose biomass but also provides a novel framework for designing highly efficient photocatalysts for photoreforming biomass into hydrogen and biochemicals.

Xylanase is the core enzyme responsible for degrading xylan, a major component of lignocellulose, and holds significant application value in fields such as food, feed, and biorefining. In this study, a xylanase gene, Xyn108 , was identified from the genome of the lignocellulose-degrading endophytic fungus Chaetomium globosum DX-THS3 and successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris . The xylanase Xyn108 belongs to glycoside hydrolase family 11 (GH11), with a molecular weight of approximately 38 kDa. The enzyme exhibited optimal activity at pH 6.0 and 40 °C, and demonstrated good stability within pH 3.0–9.0 and at temperatures below 50 °C (retaining > 50% residual activity after 180 min incubation). Xyn108 displayed high enzymatic activity towards beechwood xylan and possessed hydrolytic capacity toward microcrystalline cellulose. Crucially, Xyn108 exhibited significant synergistic effects with the commercial cellulase Cellic CTec2 in hydrolyzing pretreated rice straw. The highest synergistic degrees, reaching 1.34 and 1.24 for NaOH-pretreated and H₂SO₄-pretreated straw, respectively, were achieved at a xylanase/cellulase activity ratio of 1:3. The enzyme’s excellent pH adaptability, low-temperature activity, and remarkable synergistic effects highlight its significant application potential in industrial sectors such as feed processing, paper manufacturing, and biofuel production.

Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential biotemplate for disposing the burden of the uncontrollable accumulation of environmental contaminants disrupting the hydrophytic ecosystems. Herein, an efficient solar-driven catalyst was prepared using a natural three-dimensional (3D) porous lignocellulose-based Juncus effusus (JE) fiber for wastewater treatment. Owing to the exquisite 3D microstructure and abundant hydroxyl groups, the two-dimensional lamellar graphitic carbon nitride/graphene oxide (g-C3N4/GO) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized and decorated on the carboxymethylated JE fiber via the electrostatic self-assembly method. The as-prepared g-C3N4/GO-JE (CNG-JE) photocatalyst exhibits excellent light absorption efficiency and a superior ability to accelerate photogenerated electron migration. The outstanding adsorption performance toward pollutants also contributes to the photodegradation property of CNG-JE, showing highly efficient degradation of C.I. Reactive Red 120 (99.8%), C.I. Acid Yellow 11 (99.8%), methylene blue (99.4%), Cr(VI) (98.8%), and tetracycline (87.2%). Most importantly, the lignocellulose-based CNG-JE fibers could be fabricated into a photocatalyst textile due to their flexible and weavable properties. In actual application, the CNG-JE textile can be reused for at least five cycles under the sun, demonstrating that the flexible CNG-JE textile is practical and recyclable. This study may provide a platform for constructing efficient, flexible, and weavable biomass-based porous materials for cost-effective and sustainable catalytic applications.

It is important to improve the interface compatibility between lignocelluloses (LCs) and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) for the preparation of strong composite materials. In the current study, esterified lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) with high yield were prepared from LCs with different lignin contents (0.83–17.45 %) by swelling with a lactic acid/choline chloride deep eutectic solvent (LA/ChCl DES) at 100 ℃ for 3 h followed by mechanical colloid milling. Esterification occurred along with nanofibrillation of the LCs to obtain LCNFs having ester bonds with diameters mostly less than 100 nm. Lignin remained in the LCNFs with various contents. Uniform LCNF/PLA composites were prepared by a direct blending method. Lignin in the esterified LCNFs acted as an interface adhesive and played a key role in increasing the LCNFs interface compatibility with PLA, as well as strengthening the mechanical properties of the composites. The optimized flexural properties of the composites reached a maximum value of 204.5 MPa when 20 % LCNF (containing 10.92 % lignin) was added, which was 120.6 % higher than that of pure PLA. The prepared high-strength biodegradable composites have broad application prospects and great potential to replace non-degradable plastics.
