andPhysically crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol, phytic acid and glycerol hydrogels for wearable sensors with biocompatibility, antimicrobial stability and anti-freezing

Zheng Wan,Rongfeng Qu,Yibo Sun,Yiyan Gao,Guanghui Gao,Kexin Chen,Tianyi Liu

Portable, miniaturized, intelligent and flexible electronic devices are more and more widely used in life areas. Conductive hydrogels with remarkable ion transport capabilities and tunable mechanical properties could be emerging materials for sensing devices. However, most of conductive hydrogels do not have antimicrobial activity, leading to microbial infections for human. Herein, a hydrogel with noteworthy biocompatibility, antimicrobial stability, anti-freezing, and anti-fatigue properties was designed and developed by introducing polyvinyl alcohol, phytic acid, and glycerol. Phytic acid and PVA formed hydrogen bonds by physically cross-linking, improving the fatigue resistance and toughness of the hydrogel. The hydrogel exhibited bacteriostatic zone against for Escherichia coli as well as Bacillus subtilis, and displayed antibacterial stability within 7 days. Hydrogels appeared distinguished biocompatibility due to the absence of allergic reactions in mouse subcutaneous tissue within 14 days. Hydrogels as sensors could monitor deformational movements such as speech and joint bending. Thus, hydrogels have the potential to be used as antimicrobial materials in medical applications such as implantable sensors and clinical information interventions.

Synergistic effect of the Phytic acid-halamine as a novel durability, antibacterial and flame retardant system for cotton fibers

Wenju Zhu,Shuang Xu,Xiaokang Yang,Kai Song,Shuixia Liu,Shuolong Wang,Wei Peng,Zhao Dai,Chunlei Jiang

Phytic acid's high-efficiency flame retardant and N-halamine antibacterial were synergistically applied to cotton fibers for durable antibacterial and flame retardancy. Antimicrobial flame retardant structures were characterized by H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectra (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR). FT-IR, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric (TG), Vertical Flammability Test (VFT), and Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) were utilized to test and characterize the prepared cotton fibers. The results showed that the antibacterial flame retardant could be durably grafted on the surface of cotton fibers for a long time, and it still maintained its self-extinguishing property after 50 washing cycles, with an LOI value of 32.2 % and a damaged length of 67 mm. The N Cl bond was formed by simple bleaching treatment, which exhibited excellent bacteriostatic effect, and had a significant inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and chlorine oxide, as an antibacterial factor, could be reactivated after long-term storage and washing. Through the systematic analysis of cone calorimetry and carbon residue, it was concluded that the flame retardant mechanism of antibacterial flame retardant was mainly condensed phase. The results of the physical property analysis of cotton fibers showed that the whiteness, air permeability, flexibility, and other physical properties of cotton fibers had no obvious change, while the hydrophilicity of the finished fibers were enhanced.

Design of mechanically robust, recyclable, multi-stimuli-responsive shape memory elastomers based on biological phytic acid and cuttlefish ink

Jiarong Huang,Xiao Wang,Haonan Wu,Shuping Xiao,Yong Liang,Huiwen Yu,Baiping Xu,Wenhua Xu,Lingcao Tan

Facilitating the utilization of biomass in the rubber field is a facile strategy to reduce environmental pollution and the carbon emission. Herein, biological phytic acid (PA) was served as an eco-friendly curing agent, and cuttlefish ink (CI) was acted as a photothermal trigger switch to fabricate multi-stimuli-responsive shape memory biobased epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) with mechanical robustness and recyclable ability. ENR was vulcanized by PA via the ring-opening reaction between phosphate groups of PA and epoxy group of ENR, leading to the construction of an impeccable cross-linking network and an adjustable T g gradient, which endowed the elastomers with improved mechanical properties and shape memory effect. Meanwhile, the topology rearrangement occurred at elevated temperatures relied on phosphate transesterification, leading to excellent thermo-activated recyclable ability and reconfigurable shape memory performance of the elastomers. Additionally, CI acted as reinforced filler to enhance the ENR matrix, enabling elastomers to achieve a robust tensile strength of 21.4 MPa and tensile toughness of 30.4 MJ/m 3 , which was nearly 26.8 times and 11.3 times of the neat ENR, respectively. Exhilaratingly, CI also acted as photothermal trigger switch for the response to near-infrared light and sun, which realized the remotely multistage shape memory performance, demonstrating the potential application of ENR in the field of actuators without environmental pollution.

Fei Hu,Yu Cai,Yuhui Xie,Hui Jiang,Feng Wu,Dong Feng,Yang Meng,Yi Mei,Delong Xie

The development of transparent flame-retardant coatings has garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in enhancing fire safety while maintaining aesthetic appeal. This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of a phosphorus‑nitrogen (P N) synergistic flame-retardant system, referred to as PD, which is synthesized from phytic acid (PA) and dicyandiamide (DICY) for polyacrylate substrates. Through a series of experimental analyses including XPS, FTIR, TGA, SEM-EDS, and cone calorimetry, the flame-retardant efficacy and mechanisms of the PD/SiO 2 composite were investigated. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of PD/SiO 2 effectively enhances the flame retardancy of polyacrylate coatings, manifesting promising gas-phase and condensed-phase flame retardant effects. The coatings exhibit excellent stability, compatibility, and adhesion with polyacrylate substrates, while maintaining high levels of light transmittance and mechanical properties. Moreover, the optimized formulations show improved water resistance and meet stringent flame-retardant standards such as LOI and UL-94. The study underscores the potential of transparent flame-retardant coatings in various industries and highlights avenues for further optimization and practical application.

Enhanced Separation and Anti-biofouling Performance of Polysulfone Ultrafiltration Membrane Surface-Grafted with Phytic Acid/Silver Ion Complex Aggregates

Bao Xuemei,Yang Yongcong,Zhao Tianjing,Liu Song,Zhou Wenyao,Liu Qianqian,Yu Fengjiao,Yang Yang

A modified polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane is designed by grafting phytic acid/silver ion (PA-Ag I ) complex aggregates on the membrane surface for achieving improved separation and anti-biofouling performance. We demonstrate that PA molecules directly grafted on the PSF membrane surface through hydrogen bonding offer a suitable coordinating ability to immobilize Ag ions to form hydrophilic aggregates. One-cycle sequential assembly reinforced by a high concentration of PA is confirmed optimal for generating a compact grafting layer with better water affinity and properly narrowing the pore aperture. This modification results in a reasonable permeation flux (313.3 L m –2 h –1 bar –1 ), a high BSA rejection (93.2%) and a good antifouling property. Moreover, the PA-Ag I /PSF membrane displays excellent antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties against E. coli and B. subtilis , attributed to the gradual release of Ag ions from the moderately stable PA-Ag I complexes in a favorable aqueous environment. The PA-Ag I /PSF membrane keeps over 83% of water flux after incubation of bacteria culture for 48 h, presenting outperforming anti-biofouling durability. The low dosage of Ag ions from the PA-Ag I /PSF membrane has merits of low consumption, optimization of release profile, and alleviated environmental concerns.

Preparation of multifunctional flame-retardant wood composites by crosslinking chitosan-based polymers with phytic acid functionalized UiO-66-NH2

Yaohong Yang,Yuefeng Huang,Xinjie Yang,Li Liu,Peng Wang,Zhenqiang Kan,Wei Bi,Kaimeng Xu,Guanben Du,Lianpeng Zhang

Bio-based composites can mitigate the pollution issues linked to petroleum-based materials due to their eco-friendly properties. On the other hand, bio-based functionalized metal-organic frameworks have gained attention in the field of flame retardants due to their multi-pathway flame retardant mechanism and environmentally friendly synthesis process. However, its application in wood industry is less. In this work, a novel functional adhesive and coating (ACS-MACS/PA-UiO66-NH 2 ) was developed by using phosphorus-rich biomass phytate functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) PA-UiO66-NH 2 as a flame retardant and mixed with modified chitosan. Furthermore, using ACS-MACS/PA-UiO66-NH 2 and three-layer wooden boards, a tight cross-linked network was formed through hot pressing dehydration and condensation reactions to prepare multifunctional wood composites. The experimental results indicated that the mechanical properties of the multifunctional wood composites are excellent. Additionally, these wood composites exhibit high levels of charring and graphitization, leading to excellent flame retardancy. The preparation process of these multifunctional wood composites is straightforward, and their excellent properties provide a foundation for the development of high-performance green composite materials.

In Situ Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles on Flame-Retardant Cotton Textiles Treated with Biological Phytic Acid and Antibacterial Activity

Qingqing Zhou,Jiayi Chen,Zhenqian Lu,Qiang Tian,Jianzhong Shao

Fabrics were flame-retardant finished using phytic acid, a cost-effective, ecologically acceptable, and easily available flame-retardant finishing chemical. Then, on the surface of the completed fabric, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were grown in situ to minimize Ag NPs aggregation and heterogeneous post-finishing and to increase washing durability. Thus, flame-retardant and antibacterial qualities were added to textiles. The as-prepared textiles were evaluated for their combustion performance, thermal performance, and antibacterial capabilities. At the same time, their microstructures were studied using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The findings indicated that flame-retardant textiles had an excellent launderability (limiting oxygen index = 31% after 20 washing cycles). Meanwhile, Ag NPs-loaded flame-retardant textiles demonstrated self-extinguishing properties, with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 27%. Bacteriostatic widths of flame-retardant antibacterial textiles againstEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureuswere 5.28 and 4.32 mm, respectively, indicating that Ag NPs-loaded flame-retardant fabrics have certain flame-retardant and antibacterial capabilities. SEM and TEM analysis indicated that nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed over Ag NPs-loaded flame-retardant textiles and were around 20 nm in size. When compared to flame-retardant textiles, Ag NPs-loaded flame-retardant fabrics showed varied binding energy of P and N on the surface and Ag ion emergence. Thermogravimetric analysis at various heating rates revealed that the main pyrolysis temperature range of flame-retardant fabrics decreased, while the main pyrolysis temperature range of Ag NPs-loaded flame-retardant fabrics increased; the heating rate influenced the pyrolysis range but not the fabric mass loss. In situ reduction synthesis of Ag NPs-loaded flame-retardant textiles may successfully reduce agglomeration and heterogeneous dispersion of nano-materials during post-finishing.Keywords:antibacterial treatment;phytic acid;flame-retardant cotton textiles;Ag NPs

The effect of phytic acid on tight junctions in the human intestinal Caco-2 cell line and its mechanism

Qingxue Fu,Huizhen Wang,Mengxin Xia,Bing Deng,Hongyi Shen,Guang Ji,Guowen Li,Yan Xie

This study investigated the effect of phytic acid (IP6), a potential absorption enhancer of flavonoid components, on tight junction (TJ) integrity in Caco-2 cell monolayers and its possible mechanisms. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) across the monolayers decreased rapidly, and the flux of fluorescein sodium (a paracellular marker) increased after treating with IP6 in a concentration-dependent manner. Confocal microscopy results showed that IP6 produced a concentration-dependent attenuation in the distribution of occludin , ZO-1, and claudin-1. Immunoblot analysis revealed that IP6 could down-regulate the expression level of these TJ proteins , which resulted in the opening of TJ. Additionally, the divalent cations Ca 2   + and Mg 2   + influenced the IP6-induced distribution of occludin, ZO-1, and claudin-1 in different directions, which enhanced barrier function. In conclusion, IP6 can decrease the integrity of Caco-2 cell monolayers by modulating the TJ proteins' localization and down-regulating the expression levels of TJ proteins including claudin-1, occludin, and ZO-1; the reduction effects of divalent cations such as Ca 2   + and Mg 2   + on the regulation of TJ induced by IP6 should be addressed. The present work will offer some useful guidance for the application of IP6 in drug delivery area.

Phytic acid inhibits RafGOFScrib−/− tumor growth and invasion by suppressing the Yki-mediated JAK/STAT pathway in Drosophila melanogaster

Li Jin,Xinyu Zheng,Chenxi Yu,Ping Li,Guiran Xiao

Metastasis is one of the most important factors related to malignant tumor development and therapeutic failure. Phytic acid (PA), a poly-phosphorylated inositol derivative in plant seeds and grains, has been shown to have antitumoral activity. However, the effect of PA on tumor metastasis and the underlying mechanisms remain uncharacterized. In the current study, we aimed to identify the effect of PA on tumor metastasis by employing a Drosophila model of malignant tumor Raf GOF Scrib −/− . We observed that PA supplementation in food inhibited the invasion and migration of tumors. Further studies indicated that PA drives Yki phosphorylation and inactivation through Lats kinase, which subsequently results in decreased expression of the JAK/STAT pathway ligands unpaired cytokines (Upds). Moreover, the reduced JAK/STAT pathway inhibits the recruitment and proliferation of hemocytes. To summarize, these findings provide valuable pathological and mechanistic insights into the potential application of PA for functional food or natural medicine development.

Phytic acid assisted preparation of N, P Co-doped hierarchical porous carbon for high-rate Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Huaiyu Wang,Yanjun Cai,Zhiran Zhang,Yu Liu,Rui Zhang,Ruiqiang Huo,Ruiyao Wu,Huiyun Cheng,Jiao Yin,Jian Yin,Zhi Su,Hui Zhu

Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) not only combines the advantages of batteries and supercapacitors, but also features low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the poor active site density and sluggish diffusion kinetics of carbon cathode brings about low capacity and terrible rate capability of ZHSCs. In this work, an activation assisted template procedure is proposed to synthesize nitrogen and phosphorous dual-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NP-HPC), where phytic acid acts as both doing precursor and activation medium. Benefitting from the synergetic modulation in porosities and surface functionalities, the optimized NP-HPC-2 delivers high capacity (394.51 F g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 ), superior rate capability (200.21 F g −1 at 50 A g −1 ) and excellent durability (95.7 % retention over 10,000 cycles). Consequently, the assembled ZHSC exhibits a remarkable energy density of 140 Wh kg −1 and an impressive power density of 40 kW kg −1 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the introduction of P doping adjust the distribution of local charge density of edged N with a lowered adsorption energy barrier for Zn 2+ storage. This work not only sheds light on the integrative effect of structure modulation and functionality regulation but also provide a feasible solution for the preparation of carbon cathodes towards high energy and power density ZHSCs.

Mxene nanohybrids assembled with phytic acid-modified UiO-66 toward mechanically reinforced, fire-resistant and Smoke-suppressed epoxy composites

Kaili Gong,Lian Yin,Zilong Wu,Keqing Zhou,William W. Yu

Given the good structural and compositional characteristics, there are considerable trends towards optimizing the architectures of two-dimensional materials to work for high-performance flame-retardant polymeric materials. Herein, considering the promising features of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, phytic acid-modified UiO-66 (PA-UIO) was self-assembled onto MXene nanosheets (MXene/PA-UIO) using electrostatic interactions. The resulting nanohybrids presented good interfacial interactions and dispersion in epoxy matrix, opening up the possibility of simultaneously improving the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of the composites. Consequently, epoxy composites with 2 wt% MXene/PA-UIO achieved elevated mechanical properties and enhanced thermal properties, reflected by the increased storage modulus and tensile strength, as well as the declined rate of mass loss (R max , 28.3% reduction rate). Also, the addition of MXene/PA-UIO nanohybrids led to the drops in peak heat release rate (PHRR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR), peak CO production rate (PCOP) and peak CO 2 production rate (PCO 2 P) of 32.0%, 36.5%, 33.8% and 38.6% respectively, compared to those of pure epoxy. Meanwhile, a smoke factor (SF) with 47% drop rate was obtained, accompanied by significantly decreased gas-phase products, verifying the superior heat-reducing, smoke-suppressing and toxic fume-attenuating effects of the nanohybrids. The synergistic effects between MXene and PA-UIO realized the “3-in-1” fire-safety epoxy nanocomposites in mechanical properties, flame retardancy and smoke/toxic fume-suppressing effects. The performance enhancement was mainly attributed to the dehydration charring of phosphorus-containing acid, catalytic charring of transition metal derivatives, quenching effects of phosphorus radicals and dilution of non-flammable gases, as well as the barrier effects of the nanosheets.

Green modification of Siloxene using phytic acid-doped polyaniline and its application in water-based epoxy anti-corrosion coatings

Songlin He,Changhua Li,Yongxin Hu,Chuan Fu,Yi Fan,Xiaoxia Huang,Rui Guo,Yi He

Multidimensional nanocomposites integrate smart protection and physical barriers to prolong the service life of water-based self-healing coatings. Herein, polyaniline (PANI) and phytic acid (PA) were efficiently loaded onto siloxene sheets via a facile one-pot strategy to fabricate a nanocomposite with barrier and dual-release properties, which was introduced into water-based epoxy coating. As a modifier, PA greatly improved the dispersion of fillers and further enhanced the barrier performance and self-healing ability of the composite coating. Electrochemical impedance tests were adopted to evaluate the anticorrosion behavior of the as-prepared coating on low-carbon steel in 3.5% NaCl solution. The SPA-reinforced EP coating delivers outstanding long-term corrosion resistance, whose low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z| 0.01 Hz ) is three orders of magnitude higher than that of pure EP after 60 days of saltwater immersion. The superior performance originates from favorable filler-matrix interfacial compatibility, passivation film barrier effect and metal complexation. Salt spray tests also verify its reliable self-healing protection after coating damage. It is certain that this will provide an effective approach for improving the long-term application of water-based epoxy coatings in marine environments.
