Boiling heat transfer is widely used in energy power equipment, while the poor thermal property conventional fluids cannot meet the increase of heat transfer demand. The addition of nanoparticles into base fluids can modify the properties of base fluids and is a potential way to improve heat transfer characteristics. In present work, amorphous SiO 2 nanoparticles with an average size of 98 nm were synthesized via Stober process. And they were added into water with different mass fractions to investigate the pool boiling heat transfer characteristics. The heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux were analyzed. Results show that the heat transfer coefficient of all fluids increases rapidly in the natural convective region but then rises gradually in the nucleate boiling region. Moreover, owing to the deposition of SiO 2 nanoparticles, the heat transfer coefficients of SiO 2 -H 2 O nanofluids are lower than that of the base fluid and reduce as the concentration increase. On the other hand, because of the wettability improvement of the heating wire surface caused by the deposition of SiO 2 nanoparticles, the critical heat fluxes of nanofluids are higher than that of the base fluid. When the concentration is 0.081%, the critical heat flux achieves a peak improvement of approximately 68.8%.

To improve the thermal insulation and mechanical properties of lightweight carbon- bonded carbon fiber composites (CBCF), a porous CBCF decorated with nano SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 aerogel was prepared by sol-gel impregnation. Results showed that the nano aerogel were uniformly assembled within the pores in the CBCF framework. The aerogel played a significant role on reducing the thermal conductivity of CBCF, which could be mainly ascribed to reduced radiation and gas thermal conductivity of CBCF. Moreover, the aerogel in the CBCF pores hindered the bending fracture or elastic bending/rotation of the fibers and enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites.

The limited flexibility in terms of chemical composition restricts the microstructure and property regulation possibilities of ZrO 2 -Al 2 O 3 binary ceramic composites (BCCs). Therefore, it is significant to prepare ternary ceramic composites by introducing a third phase. In this study, a fixed proportion of amorphous SiO 2 (30 mol%) was incorporated as the third phase to develop ZrO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 ternary ceramic nanocomposites (TCNCs) with two distinct Zr/Al ratios. The TCNCs were fabricated using containerless aerodynamic levitation technology, which featured a large thermal gradient that would facilitate the formation of nano-eutectics. In samples with a Zr/Al ratio of 3:1, monoclinic ZrO 2 was the sole crystalline phase. The Al element was present in either Al-O-Si or Al-O glass phase, depending on the processing temperature; In contrast, ZrO 2 -Al 2 O 3 nano-eutectics were formed in samples with a Zr/Al ratio of 3:8, accompanied by the generation of mullite crystallites. The SiO 2 phase functioned as an amorphous matrix. Vickers hardness of the TCNC with a Zr/Al ratio of 3:8 exhibited comparability to that reported for ZrO 2 -Al 2 O 3 composites.

Plastic pollution represents a pressing environmental issue, with conventional plastic foams exacerbating visual pollution, soil contamination, and the accumulation of microplastics. This study focused on the preparation of fully bio-based foams as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based counterparts using the emulsion templating method (ETM), employing 4 wt% ethyl cellulose (EC) and 0.6 wt% silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) to stabilize water-in-oil (W/O) Pickering emulsions. The curing conditions were optimized through orthogonal experiments, revealing that the optimal parameters included curing at 80 °C for 3 h with 3 % benzoyl peroxide (BPO). The foaming experiments confirmed that heating 1.0 wt% NH 4 HCO 3 as a blowing agent for 15 min facilitated the formation of porous structures. Determination of apparent density and thermal conductivity of foams, revealed that the foam exhibited a low density (0.176 ± 0.006 g/cm 3 ) and efficient thermal insulation properties (0.065 ± 0.002 W/m·K). This study demonstrated that W/O Pickering emulsion formulated with EC, SiO 2 and soybean oil epoxidized acrylate (AESO) could be effectively employed in the production of bio-based foam via ETM, thus providing a viable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastic foams.

The present work is focused on a typical core-shell-structured SiO 2 @TiO 2 -based imprinted polymer composite, employed as a molecular recognition and sensing interface in the construction of an innovative electrochemical sensor. Herein, the methacrylic acid and a bronchodilator drug, theophylline, were used as functional monomer and template, respectively. The SiO 2 @TiO 2 served as a potential signal transducer to shuttle electrons between the binding sites and the electrode. Such modification induced an electrocatalytic effect and thereby greatly improved the electrode kinetics. The analytical features of the developed theophylline sensor have been accessed, and the results have indicated that an increase of differential pulse voltammetric current as compared to the corresponding traditional imprinted polymer modified electrode. Moreover, the sensor has showed high sensitivity, wider linear range (0.01–40 μM), lower detection limit (1.2 nM), and satisfactory long-term stability, which was validated with the complex matrices of tea, human blood serum, and urine, without any matrix effect and cross-reactivity.

Silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) can cause health hazard after their release into the environment. Adsorption of natural organic matter and biomolecules on SiO 2 NPs alters their surface properties and cytotoxicity. In this study, SiO 2 NPs were treated by bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) to study their effects on the integrity and fluidity of model cell membranes. Giant and small unilamellar vesicles (GUVs and SUVs) were prepared as model cell membranes in order to avoid the interference of cellular activities. The microscopic observation revealed that the BSA/HA treated (BSA-/HA-) SiO 2 NPs took more time to disrupt membrane than untreated-SiO 2 NPs, because BSA/HA adsorption covered the surface Si OH/Si O - groups and weakened the interaction between NPs and phospholipids . The deposition of SiO 2 NPs on membrane was monitored by a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). Untreated- and HA-SiO 2 NPs quickly disrupted the SUV layer on QCM-D sensor; BSA-SiO 2 NPs attached on the membranes but only caused slow vesicle disruption. Untreated-, BSA- and HA-SiO 2 NPs all caused the gelation of the positively-charged membrane, which was evaluated by the generalized polarity values. HA-SiO 2 NPs caused most serious gelation, and BSA-SiO 2 NPs caused the least. Our results demonstrate that the protein adsorption on SiO 2 NPs decreases the NP-induced membrane damage.

It is attractive but remains challenging to develop nanomaterials-based methods to realize the colorimetric detection of ultratrace biological analytes. In this work, an HAuCl 4 -H 2 O 2 system was developed for the visual detection of intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) based on the Au-Pt/SiO 2 sensing platform. Owing to their excellent intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, Au-Pt/SiO 2 nanospheres were introduced to catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 and then directly reduce HAuCl 4 into gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for the naked-eye detection. The produced Au NPs behaved color variations from light purple to wine red as H 2 O 2 concentration increased. Under the optimal conditions, this strategy showed excellent sensitivity for H 2 O 2 with a detection limit of 0.1 nM by naked-eye readout and 0.1 pM by UV–vis spectrometer (S/N = 3), as well as acceptable selectivity for H 2 O 2 , which could meet the demand for the detection of H 2 O 2 in biological systems. The method was further validated by the determination of H 2 O 2 in HeLa cells with low cellular cytotoxicity. Thus, this strategy would provide simple and sensitive detection of H 2 O 2 in biological systems, revealing the potential application in clinical, biological and environmental researches.

The authors describe a dual signal amplification electrochemiluminescent (ECL) immunoassay for ultrasensitive determination of the β-adrenergic agonist salbutamol (SAL). It is based on the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and silica-coated quantum dots of the type CdSe@SiO 2 . The CdSe@SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by water-in-oil reversed-phase microemulsion. Amino-modified NPs were then prepared and used as an ECL signal probe for detection of SAL in the presence of K 2 S 2 O 8 . The gold NPs with their large specific surface carry the antigen, facilitate electron transfer and improve the electrochemical reaction efficiency of QDs and K 2 S 2 O 8 . The ECL immunosensor was fabricated by coating the AuNPs with antigen, and then SAL competed with SAL antigen for the binding sites of the antibody on the CdSe@SiO 2 NPs. Under optimized conditions, the ECL intensity is linearly related to the logarithm of the SAL concentration in the range from 0.001 to 1000 ng mL −1 , with a lower detection limit of 0.17 pg mL −1 (at an S/N ratio of 3). The assay has good operational stability, is highly sensitive and selective. It is judged to possess a wider scope in that it may be applied to many other small molecule analytes for which adequate antibodies are available.

Novel high-flux and antifouling membranes were prepared by introducing the “three-dimensional structure” nanohybrid particle (GO@SiO 2 ) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) casting solution. GO@SiO 2 nanohybrid particle was produced via in situ hydrolysis and condensation of precursor tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) on the surfaces of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, and the nanohybrid membranes were first prepared through phase inversion by an immersion precipitation technique. Compared with PVDF/PVP, PVDF/SiO 2 /PVP and PVDF/GO/PVP membranes, PVDF/GO@SiO 2 /PVP membrane had outstanding performance in hydrophilicity, surface roughness, and mechanical force. The rejection rate of bovine serum albumin (BSA) exceeded 78.5% under high water flux (1232 L/(m 2 h)) and the membrane flux recovery rate was highest (BSA = 77.5%, sodium alginate (SA) = 82.1%). To investigate the antifouling properties of the nanohybrid membrane further, the adhesion forces of foulant and membrane were determined using our own foulant probes with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The results showed that the adhesion forces between PVDF/GO@SiO 2 /PVP membrane and foulants (BSA and SA) were far smaller than the adhesive forces of the foulants with the PVDF/PVP membrane. The results showed that the new nanohybrid membrane had the best overall properties and antifouling ability, and it provides a new method for improving the performance of PVDF membranes.

Surface modified colloidal SiO2@TiO2 core–shell particles were chosen to study their responsive photonic properties and the effect of surface on structural colour under low electric field. The surface of SiO2@TiO2 core–shell particles was controllably coated by PDDA, PVA and SiO2. A corresponding colloidal suspension of the modified SiO2@TiO2 showed completely different reflection spectra. The dielectric spectrum was employed to explain the effect of surface properties on the assembly.

A fluorescent core-shell molecularly imprinted polymer based on the surface of SiO 2 beads was synthesized and its application in the fluorescence detection of ultra-trace λ -cyhalothrin (LC) was investigated. The shell was prepared by copolymerization of acrylamide with allyl fluorescein in the presence of LC to form recognition sites. The experimental results showed that the thin fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (FMIP) film exhibited better selective recognition ability than fluorescent molecularly non-imprinted polymer (FNIP). A new nonlinear relationship between quenching rate and concentration was found in this work. In addition, the nonlinear relationship allowed a lower concentration range of 0–5.0 nM to be described by the Stern–Volmer equation with a correlation coefficient of 0.9929. The experiment results revealed that the SiO 2 @FMIP was satisfactory as a recognition element for determination of LC in soda water samples. Therefore this study demonstrated the potential of MIP for the recognition and detection of LC in food.

Silica-coated magnetite (Fe3O4@SiO2) nanoparticles functionalized with amino, imino and sulfonic groups (Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP) were successfully synthesized via a facile chemical oxidative polymerization of m-phenylenediamine (mPD) and m-sulfophenylenediamine-4-sulfonic acid (SP) monomers, and utilized for selective removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. It was revealed by the characterizations that the polymers formed on Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were the true copolymers with a mPD–SP unit, rather than a mixture of mPD and SP homopolymers. Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP nanocomposites could be easily separated from aqueous solutions within 30 s. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) (83.23 mg g−1) and Cr(VI) (119.06 mg g−1) on Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP nanocomposites were obtained at the mPD/SP molar ratios of 95 : 5 and 50 : 50, respectively. Moreover, satisfactory selective removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from their mixtures with Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions were exhibited by the Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP (95 : 5) and Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP (50 : 50), respectively. The Pb(II) adsorption equilibrium was reached within 5 min by Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP (95 : 5). The adsorption data of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) were both fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) on Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP nanocomposites included five processes, namely: ion-exchange, complexation adsorption, reduction reaction, electrostatic attraction and physical adsorption. The enhanced adsorption performance of nanoparticle-based magnetic adsorbents for selective removal of heavy metal ions can be achieved with such a copolymerization strategy.
