The confinement effect triggered by nano-confinement systems in the advanced oxidation processes has received extensive attention. In this study, the strategy of constructing stable confined Co 3 O 4 @SiO 2 materials and activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was adopted to successfully achieve the efficient removal of enrofloxacin (EON). The removal efficiency of EON by Co 3 O 4 @SiO 2 (0.08 g/L) could reach 99 % at pH 0 of 7 and PMS of 0.2 g/L, and the optimal degradation rate could reach 0.147 min −1 , which was 9.6 times higher than that of the unconfined system. The reaction process was mainly driven by the synergistic interaction between the non-radical 1 O 2 and the interfacial electron transfer network, and the formation of oxygen vacancies within the reaction system accelerated the degradation process. Density functional theory calculations further showed that the confinement effect of SiO 2 aerogel stabilized the Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles, the charge transfer efficiency between Co 3 O 4 @SiO 2 and PMS was optimized, and at the same time, Co 3 O 4 was the key active site for EON degradation. This research can provide an effective strategy for the activation of PMS by SiO 2 aerogel confined structure to remove antibiotic pollutants.

The structural color of photonic crystals (PCs) is stable and controllable, so it is widely applied in information encryption, optical anti-counterfeiting and sensing, etc. Current studies usually combine responsive materials with PCs to modulate and switch color, then information encryption and anti-counterfeiting can be achieved. However, the construction of responsive materials is complicated, and only different single colors can be switched without switching between transparent color and iridescent color. Herein, the seed solution method was adopted to prepare polydisperse SiO 2 nanoparticles with specific normal distribution ranging from 300nm to 1100nm, and the assembled PCs were iridescent under point light. By infiltrating with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the SiO 2 /PDMS iridescent film was obtained after cross-linking and curing. It is highly transparent under natural light and brilliantly iridescent under point light. In order to improve the stability and adhesion of SiO 2 PCs layer, the sandwich-structured PDMS/SiO 2 /PDMS iridescent film was prepared, with the optimal plasma processing time of 4 mins for the bottom PDMS layer. Three kinds of different polymer-based SiO 2 /PDMS iridescent films were constructed as well, of which the PET (polyethylene terephthalate) - based film was the most transparent and brilliantly iridescent. Based on the above, SiO 2 /PDMS iridescent film was patterned through screen printing and mask spraying process. Transparent and iridescent color can be quickly switched to each other under different lighting conditions, which is expected to be effectively applied in information encryption and optical anti-counterfeiting.

This study investigated the effect of laser texturing parameters on the shear strength and microstructure of SiC ceramic joints, which were joined using CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-Y 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CAMYS) glass filler. It was demonstrated that laser texturing promotes the formation of SiO 2 on the surface and subsequent filler adhesion. Groove depth and spacing were identified as critical factors for joint performance. Excessive groove depth (∼60 μm) caused incomplete groove filling and reduced joint strength, due to void formation. Similarly, decreased texturing spacing (∼200 μm) induced excessive thermal damage and compromised joint robustness, as observed in laser-treated ceramic surfaces. Among the five evaluated texturing configurations, the optimal condition, defined by a groove depth of ∼30 μm and spacing of ∼500 μm, yielded a maximum shear strength of 80 ± 12 MPa, representing a 77.8 % improvement over untextured joints (45 ± 10 MPa).

As living standards continue to rise, the demand for advanced cotton textiles that fulfill enhanced functional requirements has grown significantly. Therefore, the development of multifunctional antibacterial/hydrophobic cotton fabrics holds considerable practical value. In this study, a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) based hybrid material, ZIF/SiO 2 -LDS (Long-chain derivative of silane), was synthesized via a co-precipitation method using silica, zinc nitrate hexahydrate, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550), 2-methylimidazole and hexadecyltrimethylsilane (HDTMS). The resulting hybrid particles were then applied to cotton fabric through a simple padding process, achieving a loading amount of 2.348 %. This was followed by chlorination treatment with sodium hypochlorite to introduce antibacterial functionality. Hydrophobicity was assessed through contact angle measurements, achieving a maximum contact angle exceeding 145°. Antibacterial efficacy testing revealed complete inactivation of bacteria strains, achieving 100 % effectiveness. Study on the adhesion behavior of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli showed that HZSi/cot-Cl exhibits outstanding antibacterial adhesion resistance, effectively inhibiting bacterial attachment at concentrations up to 10 6 CFU/mL within one hour. The combined antibacterial and anti-adhesive properties significantly mitigate biofilm formation on the HZSi/cot-Cl surface. Notably, the fabric retained its anti-biofilm functionality even after 50 wash cycles. This research provides valuable insights into the development of advanced antibacterial and anti-adhesive treatments for cotton fabrics.

CO 2 hydrogenation to high-value-added light olefins over bifunctional catalysts is a promising pathway toward achieving net zero emissions. Herein, a series of SAPO-34 zeolites (bio-SAPO-34) with consistent acid properties but different particle sizes ( e.g. , 170 nm, 610 nm, and 7.50 μm) were synthesized using rice husk as the sole silicon source. Meanwhile, the rice husk derived SiO 2 (bio-SiO 2 ) could serve as a platform to assemble SAPO-34 and ZnZrO x into a bifunctional catalyst. It was found that the bio-SAPO-34 with the smaller particle size resulted in higher selectivity of light olefins and better long-term stability. Especially, after integration with ZnZrO x , the bio-SAPO-34 with a particle size of 170 nm exhibited higher light olefins selectivity (89.6 vs. 58.5 %) and longer catalytic lifetime (1000 vs. 59 min), as compared to a particle size of 26.0 μm. Notably, the zero length column (ZLC) technique, N 2 physisorption, and thermogravimetric analyses revealed that reducing the particle size of bio-SAPO-34 significantly decreases the diffusion resistance of light olefins in zeolites by shortening the diffusion paths, thereby inhibiting the formation of coke and enhancing the catalytic stability. Moreover, the bio-SiO 2 platform acts as a light olefins diffusion promoter by decreasing the surface diffusion resistance between zeolite particles and significantly alleviating the coke formation.

To address the environmental risks posed by PFOS-containing fire extinguishing agents, the development of highly efficient and environmentally friendly fluorine-free foam extinguishing agents has become a forefront research area in the firefighting community. In this study, a novel foam extinguishing agent was prepared using the nonionic silicone surfactant SiCare2238 and the amphoteric hydrocarbon surfactant LAMC as core components, with hydrophilic nano-SiO₂ particles (NPs) introduced to construct a gas–liquid-solid three-phase fluorine-free foam system. By regulating the NP concentration, the interactions of NPs and surfactants and the resulting effects on the foam performance were investigated. The results indicate that when the NP concentration is < 1 wt%, the charge interactions between particles and surfactants weaken the interfacial adsorption, leading to accelerated drainage and coarsening, thereby reducing the foam stability. In contrast, when the NP concentration is ≥ 1 wt%, the particles form a dense network in the Plateau borders, blocking the Plateau channels, resulting in a 47.4 % reduction in drainage within 30 min and a 30 % decrease in coarsening rate, significantly enhancing the foam stability. Moreover, the fire extinguishing and burn-back experiments demonstrated that the SN-7# system with 5 wt% NPs achieved a 90 % flame control time of 17 s and an extinguishing time of 26 s, outperforming the commercial AFFF and the NP-free SN-0#. The addition of NPs significantly enhances fire suppression efficiency, as they interact with surfactants in foam films and Plateau borders to form aggregated network structures, effectively delaying the drainage and coarsening, thereby improving the foam’s thermal stability and burn-back resistance. The findings of this study provide theoretical guidance for the development and application of NPs in fluorine-free foam extinguishing agents.

Considering the current challenges associated with fossil fuel scarcity and ice accumulation on solid surfaces, we propose a sustainable strategy that utilizes solar energy for ice formation, using a superhydrophobic coating possessing photothermal capabilities to tackle the challenges of icing and de-icing. We have successfully integrated the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @FAS/Ag-rGO composites into an epoxy matrix to create a photothermal superhydrophobic coating. The innovative coating boasts outstanding super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.8°, resulting in a 60 μL water droplet experiencing a freezing delay of 1498 s at −20 °C ambient conditions, which is longer than that of pure EP coating. Additionally, the coating exhibits an impressive photothermal effect, raising the surface temperature to 58.8 °C under 1 sun. The coating also demonstrates rapid de-icing capabilities, clearing ice in just 120 s under 40 mW/cm 2 . By leveraging the light-trapping effect, utilizing the plasma resonance of silver, and incorporating a high surface roughness micro-nano hierarchical structure, the coating achieves exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency and anti-icing performance. Moreover, the coating's chemical and mechanical durability enhance its practicality and potential utility across various applications. In conclusion, this innovative superhydrophobic coating with photothermal properties offers a promising solution for various practical applications such as anti-icing and de-icing.

The combustion efficiency of diesel can be significantly improved in the form of emulsion, contributing to the reduced emission of nitrogen oxides. It is thus worthwhile to develop an energy-efficient way to prepare stable diesel emulsions with uniform droplet size. Ceramic membranes with hydrophobic surface are highly desirable for high-efficient membrane emulsification process. We proposed a novel and straightforward approach of immersing silicon carbide (SiC) membrane into hydrophobic silica solutions obtained by co-hydrolysis to tailoring hydrophobic SiO 2 /SiC membranes. The effects of methyltriethoxysilane addition and aging days on the hydrophobicity of these silica particles were systematically investigated. Then, the deposition of silica particles on the SiC substrates was further controlled by regulating the dipping duration and dipping times. The membranes (M2-SiO 2 /SiC) prepared with 240 s and dipping 4 times showed an increased contact angle (136°), mean pore size of 0.4 μm, open porosity of 30 %, and pure water permeance of ∼ 1500 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Moreover, the modified membranes were demonstrated to be mechanically stable. Furthermore, monodisperse diesel emulsions with an average droplet size of 2.1 μm and droplet size distribution of 0.61 can be generated by using the optimized M2-SiO 2 /SiC membranes at high emulsifying flux (1910 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). This work proposed an efficient strategy to simultaneously optimize the surface wettability and pore structure of ceramic membranes, satisfactorily for membrane emulsification applications with high efficiency.

A method of sequential spraying of polyvinyl alcohol with carbon quantum dots (PVA@CDs) aqueous suspension and SiO2aqueous suspension is proposed to rapidly prepare multicolor dual-mode anti-counterfeiting labels. With the optimization of the concentration (15%) of colloidal microspheres in the SiO2aqueous suspension as well as the spraying process parameters (spray distance of 10 cm, spray duration of 3 s, and assembly temperature of 20 °C), different-sized SiO2microspheres (168 nm, 228 nm, and 263 nm) were utilized to rapidly assemble red, green, and blue photonic crystals. Furthermore, the tunable fluorescence emission of carbon quantum dots endows the labels with yellow, green, and blue fluorescence. The constructed dual-mode labeling was used to develop an anti-counterfeiting code with dual-channel information storage capabilities and also to create dual-mode multicolor anti-counterfeiting labels on various packaging substrates. This work provides a novel solution for anti-counterfeiting packaging and information storage.

High-hardness hydrophobic anti-reflection thin films were prepared by a mixture of acid-catalyzed and alkali-catalyzed sols using tetraethyl silicate (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) bisilicon sources as precursors. The alkali-catalyzed SiO 2 sol and the acid-catalyzed SiO 2 sol modified with aliphatic alcohol ethoxylated ether (AEO) were synthesized firstly, and then the acid-catalyzed SiO 2 sol was doped into the alkali-catalyzed SiO 2 sol in a certain ratio to prepare the anti-reflection thin films. The effects of the doping ratio of acid-catalyzed SiO 2 sol on the microstructures and properties of thin films were investigated. The experimental results show that both the transmittance and the contact angle increase and then decrease with the increasing of the doping ratio of acid-catalyzed SiO 2 sol, and the surface hardness and adhesion are gradually enhanced. When the doping ratio of acid-catalyzed SiO 2 sol is 30%, the average transmittance of the reflectance-reducing film is 92.51% in the wavelength range of 400–1100 nm, which is 5.17% higher than that of the blank glass. The water contact angle of the reflectance-reducing film is up to 92°, and the adhesion of the film is the highest level 0. After 100 h of UV exposure, the transmittance of the film was reduced by 1.1%. Graphical

Water glass-based aerogels (WAGs) are poor in mechanical properties, which seriously limits their application. At the same time, the strong acid used for the gelation of water glass is corrosive to equipment. In this work, water glass-based aerogel monolith with significantly improved mechanical property were prepared with flexible electrospun SiO 2 nanofibers (SNF) as reinforcing agents and formamide (FA) as the hydrolysis catalyst (SNF/WAG). The introduced SNF can reduce the density and shrinkage of the aerogel, which are decreased to 8.9 % and 0.107 g cm −3 for the SNF/WAG-2, respectively. Most importantly, the introduction of SNF can transform the brittle structure of WAG into the plastic structure of SNF/WAG, improving its mechanical properties. The high adsorption capacity for CH 2 Cl 2 (11.33 g g −1 ) enables SNF/WAG to serve as an efficient oil absorbent material. Owing to the low density, hydrophobicity and good insulation, the evaporator assembled with SNF/WAG as insulator exhibits evaporation rates of 1.932, 2.622, and 3.082 kg m −2 h −1 at 1, 2, and 3 sun illumination, and the evaporation rate can still be maintained at 1.728 kg m −2 h −1 after 5 cycles at 1 sun intensity. This study offers a feasible approach to overcome the key limitations of conventional water glass-based aerogels. It significantly enhances the overall material performance while maintaining low-cost preparation, thus paving the way for broader application of aerogels in areas such as high-strength thermal insulation.

An ideal and distinctive microwave-absorbing carbon-based material feature an eco-friendly, low-cost fabrication process combined with high loss efficiency and strong absorption potential. Here we design an innovative nanohybrids with carbon nano onion (CNO) from paraffin ultra-pure lamp oil by flame method awning unique structure to boost up the dielectric loss. And TiO 2 is introduced for efficient microwave absorption loss through an in-situ process using C 7 H 8 O and TiCl 4 , while SiO 2 plays a critical role in controlling the dielectric constant through the use of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). To boost up the nanohybrids effective loss mechanism the material is exposed to a carbon capsule (CC) utilizing acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) as a carbon source for 5 minutes under argon to prepare CNO/TiO 2 /SiO 2 /CC nanohybrids. The nearby dual-nanocarbon forms multi-level interfaces enhancing the multi-level rebound and microwave absorption of the microwave interfaces. The as-designed CNO/TiO 2 /SiO 2 /CC has effective minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value of -54.4 dB and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of 5.5 GHz at a thickness of 1.9 mm. It also has good thermal conductivity. Hence, this work confirms that high-performance nanohybrids derived from paraffin ultra-pure lamp oil are promising candidates, providing a novel approach for the design and development of carbon-based microwave absorbers.
