Atomistic insights into shell-modulated interfacial interactions of core-shell SiO2@organic polymer abrasives for silicon chemical mechanical polishing

Man Zhang,Gaopan Chen,Guoshun Pan,Dan Guo,Koucheng Zuo

Understanding how core-shell abrasive architecture governs interfacial interactions is critical for balancing material removal rate (MRR) and surface quality in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). Here, a core-shell abrasive system with a SiO 2 core and an organic shell is investigated through an integrated approach combining polishing experiments, physicochemical characterization, and multiscale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Polishing experiments on single-crystal silicon demonstrate that a thin organic shell significantly improves surface quality while reducing MRR, suggesting that the organic shell suppresses aggressive mechanical interaction at the abrasive-substrate interface. MD simulations reveal a non-monotonic dependence of particle-substrate adhesion on shell thickness. A single organic layer markedly enhances adhesion by positioning interfacial atoms within the energetically favorable van der Waals interaction distance, whereas further shell thickening reduces adhesion due to increased interfacial separation and electrostatic screening. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements provide experimental evidence for the enhanced adhesion in the thin-shell regime. Reactive MD (RMD) simulations further show that the organic shell acts as a compliant buffer that redistributes contact stress, mitigates localized deformation, and significantly reduces defect generation, promoting a transition from defect-dominated removal to a more uniform and controlled process. The experimentally observed shell thickness (approximately 1.38 nm) coincides with the regime where adhesion enhancement and mechanical compliance are optimally coupled. These findings reveal the structure-property relationship governing polishing behavior and provide rational design principles for high-performance core-shell abrasives. Multifunctional core-shell Fe0@SiO2@nCaO2 nanocomposite for sequential oxidative degradation and immobilization of coexisting organic and inorganic contaminants

Huaqing Liu,Yujian Hu,Wenjuan Liu,Mengcheng Zhang,Wenrui Zhang,Yanlong Wang

A spatially regulated Fe⁰@SiO₂@nCaO₂ nanocomposite was rationally designed. • A multifunctional material integrates oxidation, precipitation, and flocculation. • Fe loading regulates ROS generation and pollutant-specific removal pathways. • Sequential activation of oxidation, precipitation, and flocculation pathways was revealed. The simultaneous removal of coexisting organic and inorganic contaminants remains a major challenge for wastewater treatment because conventional technologies fail to integrate oxidative degradation with inorganic immobilization in a single reaction system. Herein, a spatially regulated Fe 0 @SiO 2 @nCaO 2 multifunctional nanocomposite was developed to achieve synergistic purification of representative organic pollutants (sulfamethoxazole and atrazine) and inorganic contaminants (As(III) and phosphate). Batch experiments showed that the optimized Fe 0 @SiO 2 @nCaO 2 composite (Fe loading of 170.2 mg g −1 , 1 g L −1 ) removed 97.9% of sulfamethoxazole and 99.9% of atrazine, As(III), and phosphate within 24 h at an initial concentration of 20 mg L −1 for each contaminant. Radical–quenching experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance analysis revealed the involvement of 1 O 2 and •O 2 - , with a possible contribution from •OH. Notably, 1 O 2 showed the strongest apparent influence on sulfamethoxazole oxidation under the present alkaline conditions. Arsenic removal involved an initial As(III) oxidation step, followed by adsorption onto Fe-based sites and final immobilization through Fe/Ca–Si flocculation, rather than direct precipitation. Phosphate was primarily immobilized through rapid calcium-induced precipitation followed by incorporation into Fe/Ca–Si flocs. In the ternary sulfamethoxazole–As(III)–phosphate system, phosphate precipitation, organic oxidation, and arsenic immobilization exhibited distinct temporal separation. Matrix-effect experiments further showed that humic acid mainly inhibited As immobilization. Nevertheless, in a real-water matrix, 24-h removal efficiencies remained 92.1%, 99.5%, and 97.0% for SMX, phosphate, and As, respectively. These results demonstrated that Fe 0 @SiO 2 @nCaO 2 integrated complementary oxidation, precipitation, and immobilization pathways while maintaining effective performance under complex water-matrix conditions.

Oriented SiO2-modified Al flake/SiC nanowire hybrid networks with interfacial regulation for highly thermally conductive silicone rubber composites

Feng Wei,Anjun Shi,Guangxing Huang,Haidong Gu,Yinsi Gan,Jianan Song

Ice-templated assembly can organize two-dimensional and one-dimensional fillers into oriented networks, providing an effective strategy for constructing thermally conductive pathways in polymer composites. However, conventional two-dimensional fillers, such as graphene and MXene, are prone to curling, restacking, and aggregation, which compromises network continuity and thermal transport efficiency. In contrast, Al flakes possess high thermal conductivity, a high aspect ratio, and resistance to curling, but their surface oxidation and poor water dispersibility limit their application in ice-templated assembly. Herein, surface modification with silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) was first introduced onto Al flakes to improve their dispersibility in water and mitigate surface oxidation. The resulting flakes (Al@SiO 2 ) were then combined with silicon carbide nanowires (SiCNWs) to form oriented hybrid filler networks in silicone rubber (SR) through ice-templated assembly, followed by interfacial modification using a polysiloxane-based modifier. The best-performing composite achieved a through-plane thermal conductivity of 4.49 W·m −1 ·K −1 at an Al@SiO 2 /SiCNW loading of 6.54 wt% (2.60 vol%). Theoretical modeling evaluated the contribution of Al@SiO 2 flakes and SiCNWs to thermal transport, while finite-element simulations confirmed that the oriented hybrid networks promoted continuous heat transfer. The composites also exhibited excellent heat-dissipation capability and thermal stability. This work provides an effective strategy for constructing highly efficient thermally conductive networks in polymer composites. Solvation-Regulated Crosslink Growth of Acrylate/SiO2 Networks via Solution Polymerization for Low-Temperature High-Efficiency Oil-Adsorption Resins

Xiaoji Fu,Feng Zhou,Yu Song,Hui Chen,Dan Fang,Yating Chen,Xiri Chen,Dong Lu,Xianyan Ren

At low temperatures, the performance of polymeric adsorbents in remediating oil spills and organic-solvent leakage can be severely compromised by restricted segmental mobility within the polymer network. To address this limitation, an acrylate-based oil-adsorption resin with a low glass-transition temperature ( T g ) was prepared through solution polymerization by regulating the solvation environment of the growing polymer chains. An ethyl acetate/isopropanol mixture (3:1 v/v) was used as the polymerization medium, with stearyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate as comonomers and divinylbenzene as the crosslinker. KH570-modified SiO 2 nanoparticles were incorporated in situ to construct an organic–inorganic network, denoted PSDB@SiO 2 . The PSDB@SiO 2 exhibited a T g of −29.35°C and a static water contact angle of 109.73°, providing a favorable basis for low-temperature segmental responsiveness and organic-liquid wetting. PSDB@SiO 2 maintained a high chloroform adsorption capacity of 40.75–51.60 g·g −1 from room temperature to −40°C. At −20°C, 82.92% of the initial adsorption capacity was retained after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. Moreover, the material retained 99% of the adsorbed chloroform after centrifugation at 12000 rpm for 5 min and exhibited selective capture of organic liquids under simulated application conditions. Highlights Solvation-regulated polymerization enables high-capacity adsorption at low temperatures. PSDB@SiO 2 combined a T g of −29.35°C with solvent-induced relaxation. Adsorption capacity remained 40.75–51.60 g·g −1 from −40°C to 20°C.

ZnFe2O4@SiO2/C Composites Synthesized by High-Temperature Mechanochemical Technology for Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorption in the X-Band

Boshuo Shi,Bo Wang,Qing Han,Shicheng Wei,Yujiang Wang,Kuiren Liu,Jianshe Chen,Daxue Fu,Binchuan Li

Constructing a reasonable dielectric-magnetic synergistic effect is an effective way to prepare high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbers. In this paper, ZnFe2O4@SiO2/C composites with a close-packed structure were successfully synthesized by an efficient condensation reaction of a silane coupling agent and high-temperature mechanochemical technology. The silane coupling agent can effectively adjust the occurrence state of ZnFe2O4 and the graphite interlayer compound, so as to realize the adjustable electromagnetic parameters. When the ratio of silane coupling agent, deionized water, and anhydrous ethanol is 1:1:1, ZnFe2O4@SiO2/C composites achieve a minimum reflection loss value (RLmin) of −52.5 dB at a thickness of 1.87 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) of 4.16 GHz at a thickness of 2.07 mm. In addition, the EAB covers 8–12 GHz at a thickness of 1.97 mm, achieving efficient absorption of X-band electromagnetic waves. Through the optimization of structure and composition, the problems of large thickness and limited electromagnetic wave performance of ZnFe2O4/C composites are effectively improved, which provides a way for the design and large-scale preparation of ZnFe2O4-based absorbers with high electromagnetic wave absorption performance in the X-band.

Xuerui Zhang,Shuo Wang,Yixin Ren,Xiaoting Fu,Xiaodong Bi,Xia Wang,Ru-Song Zhao

The pentafluorophenyl (PFP)-functionalized stationary phases, due to their unique hydrophobicity and fluorophilic affinity, have received increasing attention in separation science. How to introduce PFP group effectively with a green chemistry approach has become an important issue. This work provided a facile and green synthetic route for preparing PFP@SiO 2 column. The liquid chromatography (LC) performance towards pharmaceutical molecules such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and antiviral drugs was systematically explored. The results showed the PFP@SiO 2 column possessed a low back pressure and good solvent endurance (less affected by solvent effect). Under gradient elution mode, the column also showed a higher separation efficiency and good quantitative capacity towards complex natural product ( Sanguisorbae Radix Carbonisatum extract), which met the requirements of current standards and regulations. This work provides a facile green synthesis approach for preparing highly-performed PFP@SiO 2 column for pharmaceutical applications, and a powerful tool for biomedicine.

Fabrication of superhydrophobic SiO2/VS2 composite coating on anodized aluminum alloy and its self-cleaning, anticorrosion and antibacterial performance

Kecheng Lu,Pengjie Fan,Zebing Xu,Guang Deng,Wenbin Jiang,Zhaojin Ran,Ran Mo,Chenggang Hao,Hua Cen,Zhongmin Wang

To address the issues of severe corrosion (especially in chloride-rich marine environments) and microbial adhesion-induced biofouling that limit the service life of aluminum alloys, this study developed an integrated surface protection system for aluminum substrates by synergizing anodic oxidation and composite functional coating technologies. First, an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) layer was constructed on 5052 aluminum alloy, then VS 2 micro-nano particles were synthesized via hydrothermal method while SiO 2 nanoparticles were hydrophobically modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTES, denoted as P-SiO 2 ), and finally P-SiO 2 and VS 2 (optimal mass ratio of 3:1) were sprayed onto the AAO surface with epoxy resin as binder to form the organic-inorganic superhydrophobic composite coating (AAO@P-SiO 2 /VS 2 ). Multiple characterization techniques including XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM, HRTEM, ICP-OES, laser particle size analyzer and surface roughness tester were used to systematically confirm the phase purity, elemental composition, valence state, micro-nano morphology, thickness, stoichiometry and roughness of the coating and its components. Performance tests showed that the composite coating exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 152.12°, sliding angle of 4.6°) and corresponding self-cleaning ability, significantly enhanced corrosion resistance (self-corrosion current density of 6.053 ×10⁻ 11 A/cm 2 , 1 order of magnitude lower than AAO and 5 orders of magnitude lower than bare aluminum alloy; low-frequency impedance modulus of 4.50 ×10 8 Ω·cm 2 ), outstanding antibacterial activity (99.89 % antibacterial rate against Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and effective inhibition against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus ) as well as good stability and durability (excellent wear resistance, high adhesion of 18.20 MPa, and water contact angle remaining above 150° after 30 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution). This study innovatively integrates anodization with PFDTES-modified SiO 2 and VS 2 -based antibacterial composite coating, providing a cost-effective and sustainable solution for enhancing the multifunctional protection of aluminum alloys, which is of great significance for extending the service life of metal equipment, especially in marine and harsh industrial environments.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Triazine Herbicides in Agricultural Water Using a Fe3O4/SiO2/TiO2 Photocatalyst: Phytotoxicity Assessment in Pak Choi

Yoshiaki Nomura,Manabu Kiguchi,Zhongoing Liang,Mei Ma,Akira Fujishima,Nobuhiro Hanada

The triazine herbicides simetryn and prometryn may cause damage to nontarget crops due to persistent contamination of agricultural water. Photocatalysis is a promising technology for the degradation of agricultural pollutants. This study provides the first systematic integration of photocatalytic herbicide degradation with live plant bioassay validation using cost-effective Fe3O4/SiO2/TiO2 magnetic photocatalysts synthesized by a simple coprecipitation method suitable for large-scale production. The phytotoxicity of herbicide-containing water was evaluated using pak choi, a crop sensitive to triazines. Both herbicides were completely decomposed in water within 240 min after UV irradiation, and their phytotoxicity also disappeared. In the plant toxicity evaluation, prometryn exhibited temporary high toxicity exceeding that of the untreated 10 ppm solution during the photodegradation process. In previous photocatalyst studies, evaluations relied on either chemical analysis or biological tests. In this study, we developed a new rapid toxicity screening technique using plant seedlings and established a safety evaluation protocol integrating chemical analysis and plant toxicity tests. This method represents the first approach to comprehensively evaluate the safety of agricultural water.

Hydrogen-rich syngas production from steam reforming of toluene using highly active and stable Ni@SiO2 yolk-shell catalysts

Guang Yang,Qiang Hu,Haiping Yang,Yang Yang,Wei Cheng,Jiageng Xia,Hanping Chen

Catalytic reforming technology holds significant potential for treating biomass gasification tar. However, the design of catalysts that offer high activity, low carbon deposition, and long-term stability remains a challenge. In this study, Ni@SiO 2 yolk-shell catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in toluene steam reforming. The Ni@SiO 2 -10 catalyst demonstrated excellent stability and activity, maintaining a 100 % toluene conversion rate over a 120-h test period with virtually no carbon deposition after reforming. In contrast, Ni/SiO 2 and Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts, synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation, showed significant sintering and carbon deposition after use. Under identical support conditions, Ni@SiO 2 reduced the initial reaction temperature for toluene steam reforming from 462 °C to 418 °C. Increasing the Ni loading significantly enhanced the number of active sites, decreased the size of the SiO 2 microspheres, and thinned the SiO 2 shell layer, thereby elevating the toluene conversion from 72 % to 100 %. Both temperature and the GHSV (gas hourly space velocity) had a significant impact on catalytic performance, with conversion rates stabilizing at 700 °C and an GHSV = 24500 h −1 . The yolk-shell structure of Ni@SiO 2 promoted high Ni dispersion, reducing aggregation and carbon deposition, which were key to its high activity and stability. These findings are crucial for the development of catalysts for biomass tar reforming.

Synthesis of TiO2/Cu2O heterojunction material based on SiO2 nanospheres and its application in anti-oxidation and antibacterial coatings

Xiaojiao Yu,Yi Wang,Long Li,Jin Wang,Dun Zhang

To enhance the bactericidal efficacy of TiO 2 /Cu 2 O composite coatings and mitigate the issue of ongoing oxidation, we introduced different sizes of spherical silica as supporting materials, combined with TiO 2 /Cu 2 O, to develop a novel antibacterial, antioxidant photocatalytic system. The synthesized ST and STC samples underwent comprehensive characterization using transmission electron microscopy. Subsequent analyses employing X-ray diffraction and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance systematically validated the preserved structural integrity and enhanced photochemical stability of the developed materials. The introduction of silica spheres not only significantly increased the specific surface areas of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, thereby enhancing their interfacial contact, but also promoted efficient charge separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Furthermore, this approach reduced the required amount of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, leading to cost savings. These advantages make the developed coating highly suitable for industrial-scale sterilization applications.

Formation mechanism of active sites with enhanced DBT hydrodesulfurization performance in high-loading NiMoW/SiO2 catalysts during secondary sulfidation

Fengyu Tian,Xianfu Zeng,Guangzheng Sun,Zhaohao Han,Guangxun Sun,Yuan Pan,Bin Dong,Yichuan Li,Yanpeng Li,Hailing Guo,Bin Liu,Chenguang Liu,Yongming Chai

The petroleum refining industry faces increasing challenges in processing sulfur-rich crude oils while meeting stringent environmental regulations. Increasing the metal loading is the most straightforward approach to enhancing catalyst activity. However, under high metal loading conditions, the catalyst tends to form a significant amount of isolated low-activity NiS x and NiO x species. This study presents an effective " sulfidation-oxidation-secondary sulfidation" reconstruction process to enhance the hydrogenation performance of high-loading sulfide NiMoW/SiO 2 catalysts. The migration of active species on the metal surface was induced through high-temperature calcination and sulfur-oxygen transformation processes, leading to the conversion of isolated NiS x and NiO x species into a distinctive NiMoWS/NiS x -SiO 2 composite active phase, with NiS x functioning as a secondary support. Extensive characterization using XRD, HRTEM-EDS, XPS, and DFT calculations revealed that this structural modification substantially increased metal dispersion, sulfidation degree, and hydrogen spillover effects. The optimized NiMoW-300(S) catalyst displayed excellent hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activity and hydrogenation selectivity, with a relative volumetric activity (RVA) 2.49 times higher than that of the conventional NiMo/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst, while also demonstrating outstanding stability.

Fabrication of SiO2/silver quantum dots composite coatings for synergistic passive anti-icing, active de-icing and corrosion protection

Zhaowei Liu,Zechong Liu,Yu Zhang,Pengjiao Chong,Chen Tang,Tao Wu,Yufei Tang

Under cold-climate conditions, ice accumulation on transmission line surfaces poses a severe threat to grid safety, while conventional anti-/de-icing strategies are limited by high energy consumption, low de-icing efficiency, and complex maintenance requirements. To address these challenges, a SiO 2 /AgQDs anti-/de-icing composite coating with excellent anti-icing performance was constructed on aluminum alloy substrates via in-situ chemical reduction coupled with sol-gel processing. The optimized MS/Ag-75 coating exhibited superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 163.2°, which endowed the surface with excellent self-cleaning and anti-fouling capabilities, while concurrently extending the droplet freezing time to 489 s, approximately ten times that of bare aluminum. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the nano-SiO 2 light-trapping architecture and AgQDs-mediated localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), the coating surface reached 90.7 °C within 120 s of illumination, enabling complete ice removal in only 44 s. Importantly, the coating also displayed the lowest self-corrosion current density (I corr =0.062168 mA/cm 2 ), confirming enhanced corrosion resistance. This study validates the significant advantage of AgQDs in creating high-performance photothermal surfaces and elucidates the integrated anti-icing, de-icing, and corrosion-protection mechanisms, providing a low-cost, high-performance design paradigm with broad application potential and significant practical relevance.
