Plants exhibit rapid responses to biotic and abiotic stresses by releasing a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Monitoring changes in these VOCs holds the potential for the early detection of plant diseases. This study proposes a method for identifying late blight in potatoes based on the detection of (E) -2-hexenal, one of the major VOC markers released during plant infection by Phytophthora infestans . By combining the Michael addition reaction with cysteine-mediated etching of aggregation-induced emission gold nanoclusters (Au NCs), we have developed a portable hydrogel kit for on-site detection of (E) -2-hexenal. The Michael addition reaction between (E) -2-hexenal and cysteine effectively alleviates the etching of cysteine-mediated Au NCs, leading to a distinct fluorescence color change in the Au NCs, enabling a detection limit of 0.61 ppm. Utilizing the superior loading and diffusion characteristics of the three-dimensional structure of agarose hydrogel, our sensor demonstrated exceptional performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, reaction time, and ease of use. Moreover, quantitative measurement of (E) -2-hexenal was made easier by using ImageJ software to transform fluorescent images from the hydrogel kit into digital data. Such method was effectively used for the early detection of potato late blight. This study presents a low-cost, portable fluorescent analytical tool, offering a new avenue for on-site detection of plant diseases.

Superhydrophobic wearable flexible sensors possess significant application potential in detecting human behaviors within amphibious environments. However, under complex wetting conditions, the failure of the superhydrophobic coating poses a critical challenge, as it degrades the internal conductive network and leads to device malfunction. Herein, we present an all-weather amphibious e-textile (AWAE) with a micro-/nano-armored superhydrophobicity, achieved by integrating an MXene–chitosan conductive layer with a fluorinated dot-line interwoven mesh coating. Such AWAE exhibits exceptional environmental robustness, retaining superhydrophobicity and stable sensing under mechanical abrasion, chemical corrosion (acid/alkali/salt), extreme temperatures, and UV exposure. Notably, the AWAE enables continuous and accurate monitoring of human joint motions, underwater gestures, and robotic operations even in simulated seawater. This work provides a durable and versatile platform for all-weather amphibious sensing, with potential applications in healthcare, marine robotics, and smart underwater wearable systems.

Bacterial infections are becoming a significant threat to global human health due to the growing prevalence of biofilm-related infections and the rise in antibiotic resistance. D/ l -cysteine functionalized chiral gold nanoparticles (D/P-Au NPs or L/P-Au NPs) have demonstrated a potent antibacterial effect against E. coli , while the mechanism remains to be elucidated through additional research. Threonine deaminase (TD) is a crucial enzyme involved in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) biosynthesis in E. coli and is involved in cysteine's antimicrobial effects. This study investigated the interaction between chiral Au NPs (D/P-Au NPs or L/P-Au NPs) and TD as well as its effect on enzyme activity. It demonstrates that chiral Au NPs interact with TD through hydrophobic forces, forming a ground state complex that induces changes in the secondary structure of TD and reduces enzyme activity in a concentration-dependent manner. We found that the exogenous supplementation of isoleucine and valine (2 mg/mL) significantly reduced the antibacterial activity of chiral Au NPs, especially for L/P-Au NPs. The proteomics results indicate that the expression of ilvA and ilvB was down-regulated after L/P-Au NPs treatment, which would interfere with the synthesis of BCAAs. These results demonstrate that chiral Au NPs cause cell death of E. coli partly due to inhibition of TD enzyme activity and the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids.

As a result of amphipathic oligomers driven by different forces including hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, H-bond, and heat, multiscale emulsion particles can be wrapped. In this paper we attempted to use sodium shellac as a novel biobased wrapping material. The H+, Ca+, and spray-drying methods were employed to solidify the complex vitamin E (VE) emulsion with sodium shellac to fabricate the beads. The VE loading and encapsulation efficiency were used to evaluate the wrapping process. The results show that the microscale VE emulsion particles could easily be wrapped by these three means. However, due to the high solid content of the nanoscale emulsion particles, it was difficult to wrap them by spray-drying method. The beads solidified by H+ had higher VE loading and encapsulation efficiency than those solidified by other methods and even grabbed the hydrophobic molecule VE from the emulsion micelles. At an RVS of 1:4, these two parameters, which are obtained by the nanoscale emulsion particle wrapping process, could reach 18.9 and 64.3% supported by the single driving force of hydrophobic interaction. Above all, this research introduced a novel wrapping material driven by different forces that can aggregate and wrap the emulsion micelles. It can be widely used in the medical, food, and cosmetics industries.

Objectives To improve the Pb 2+ biosorption capacity of the potential E. coli biosorbent, a putative Pb 2+ binding domain (PbBD) derived from PbrR was efficiently displayed on to the E. coli cell surface. Results The PbBD was obtained by truncating the N-terminal DNA-binding domain and C-terminal redundant amino acid residues of the Pb 2+ -sensing transcriptional factor PbrR. Whole-cell sorbents were constructed with the full-length PbrR and PbBD of PbrR genetically engineered onto the surface of E. coli cells using Lpp-OmpA as the anchor. Followed by a 1.71-fold higher display of PbBD than PbrR, the presence of PbBD on the surface of E. coli cells enabled a 1.92-fold higher Pb 2+ biosorption than that found in PbrR-displayed cells. Specific Pb 2+ binding via PbBD was the same as Pb 2+ binding via the full-length PbrR, with no observable decline even in the presence of Zn 2+ and Cd 2+ . Conclusions Since surface-engineered E. coli cells with PbBD increased the Pb 2+ binding capacity and did not affect the adsorption selectivity, this suggests that surface display of the metal binding domain derived from MerR-like proteins may be used for the bioremediation of specific toxic heavy metals.

Mechanoluminescence (ML) offers a novel approach to photon emissions without requiring extra electrical input. In recent decade, a variety of ML materials have afforded advantageous prospect for various potential applications. Nevertheless, the material composition optimization and application progress are limited by the time-consuming and complicated preparation methods. Here, a one-step rapid microwave-assisted solid-state (MASS) synthesis approach is firstly employed for the preparation of CaZnOS-based quaternary ML materials with lanthanide/transition metal dopants and variable compositions. Notably, this method only takes a total synthesis duration of 20-minute microwave radiation, which can greatly facilitate the efficient preparation of a variety of ML materials. Moreover, bright host emission from the CaZnOS matrix is unexpectedly induced, providing a new opportunity for manipulating multicolor luminescence. Finally, we have proposed that the people’s writing characteristics can be analyzed by using these ML materials, which offers a great potential for pressure visualization, individualized E-signature anti-counterfeiting applications and beyond. This work not only provides a facile one-step synthesis method for the preparation of CaZnOS-based quaternary ML materials that featuring unique host emission, but also suggests the ML materials to be applied in advanced E-signature and on-demand information identification applications, which is of significance for integrated optoelectronic devices in future.

The economic value of recovering gold from electronic waste (e-waste) has generated significant interest, but selective capture of gold from complex acidic electronic leaching solutions remains challenging. Here, we synthesized poly-m-phenylenediamine (PmPD) nanoparticles with a positively charged surface and amino functional groups, resulting in an adsorption capacity of 2063 mg/g for Au(III) in acidic solutions, superior to most traditional adsorbents. Electrostatic adsorption and reduction were identified as the adsorption mechanism for Au(III) by zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. To enable adsorbent recycling, PmPD nanoparticles were assembled into adsorptive membranes and used for gold recovery from e-wastewater via a continuous-flow membrane separation process. The PmPD membrane achieved a dynamic gold recovery capacity of approximately 530 mg/g and could be effectively regenerated after washing with a mixture of thiourea and HCl. We demonstrated the practical application of the adsorptive membranes by recovering about 100% of gold from the leaching solution of waste printed circuit boards of computers. Finally, the recovered gold nanoparticles on the PmPD membrane were used to catalyze the degradation of p-nitrophenol, showcasing the catalytic property of gold. The Au@PmPD membrane loaded with 4 mg gold exhibited a high catalytic reduction performance with an apparent rate constant of 0.59 min–1, one of the highest catalytic degradation rate constants of p-nitrophenol reported to date. Our study presents an effective and economical approach for recovering gold from e-waste, providing a prototype of resource recovery and reuse.

Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid for organisms. The separation and purification are important for the production of l -methionine from fermentation broth. In this work, the adsorption properties for l -methionine separation of ten macroporous resins were firstly evaluated. Macroporous cation resin D72 showed the best adsorption capacity (52.37 mg/g) and desorption rate (99.12%). The adsorption kinetics of l -methionine on D72 resin followed the pseudo second-order model and adsorption isotherm fitted well to the Sips model, the adsorption process mainly followed a physisorption mechanism. D72 resin packed columns were then used in the batch separation of fermentation broth, the operation parameters were optimized during the dynamic adsorption and desorption experiments. Under the optimized conditions: fermentation broth adjusted to pH = 2, loading flow rate at 2 BV/h, loading volume 55 mL, 1 mol/L NH 3 ·H 2 O as eluent , elution flow rate at 2 BV/h, column height-diameter ratio at 14:1, excellent recovery and purity of l -methionine (82.37% and 85.69%, respectively) could be achieved.

BACKGROUND Maize ( Zea mays L.), as the most widely cultivated cereal and a dietary cornerstone, provides not only carbohydrates but also essential micronutrients critical for human health, including vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids. However, conventional maize varieties typically exhibit suboptimal levels of these compounds. This study investigated the dynamic accumulation of vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids, along with their transcriptional regulation, during early kernel development (9–15 days after pollination (DAP)) in maize. RESULTS Combined metabolite and transcriptome analyses showed a 23-fold increase in vitamin C content, associated with enhanced expression of the gene VTC2 . Id1 and AGAMOUS-like MADS-box transcription factors (TFs) are putative regulators, targeting the promoters of GalDH and VTC2 to regulate vitamin C biosynthesis. Vitamin E showed isomer-specific fluctuations during early kernel development, mainly associated with the expression of VTE1 , VTE2 , and VTE4 , and potentially regulated by knotted 1 and the AGAMOUS-like MADS-box TFs via VTE2 and VTE3 , respectively. Total carotenoid content tripled, with zeaxanthin becoming dominant by 15 DAP, driven by upregulated PSY1 and CHYB-1 . ERF003 was identified as a candidate regulator of PSY3 . CONCLUSION The increases in vitamin C and carotenoid content, and the fluctuation of vitamin E isomers during early maize kernel development, were associated with the modulation of key genes and putative TFs. These findings reveal theoretical insights and provide candidate genetic targets for future breeding efforts aimed at enhancing micronutrient levels in maize. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

This report presents the first application of an amide linkage strategy in pyrene-based imine COFs. • Amide groups enhance the polarity and coordination ability of TFPPY-DA-COF channels. • The TFPPY-DA-COF achieved an Au adsorption capacity of 2040 mg g −1 . Pyrene-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have received considerable attention for gold recovery, yet challenges remain in terms of adsorption capacity and economic cost. Herein, we initially employed an amide linkage strategy to construct a pyrene-based imine COF for gold recovery. The introduction of amide groups enhanced the polarity and coordination ability of the pore walls, enabling amide-linked COF to exhibit an Au uptake of 2040 mg g −1 , which is approximately twice that of its non-amide counterpart, and superior to most previously reported pyrene-based COFs. Moreover amide-linked COF also demonstrates excellent selectivity (distribution coefficient for Au exceeding 2.74 × 10 5 ; maximum separation factor > 6000) and outstanding performance in practical applications. Notably, the ligands used to synthesize both pyrene-based COFs are low-cost, and the captured Au particles can reach micrometer-scale sizes, which facilitates their separation and recovery. Further performance tests, combined with characterization and DFT calculations, reveal that the coordination of Au ions by the carbonyl groups in the amide linkages plays a dominant role during adsorption, and the reduction effect of the protonated imine bonds also contributes to improving the adsorption performance. Overall, this work provides a new approach for using COF materials to selectively capture and recover gold, offering potential for practical applications. Pyroptosis plays a crucial role in immune defense against infections and endogenous threats by eliminating harmful cells and modulating the immune response through inflammation. However, the natural activation of pyroptosis involves intricate signaling pathways, posing significant challenges for its artificial manipulation in research and therapies. Here, we present DAMAGE ( D e a th Ma nipulation Ge ne), an innovative system that integrates gasdermins within the type III-E CRISPR framework, enabling the specific recognition of target RNA (tgRNA) and triggering pyroptosis. This mechanism allows DAMAGE to selectively identify and eliminate virus-infected, cancerous, and senescent cells, all of which exhibit altered RNA transcriptomes. Additionally, DAMAGE exhibits considerable promise as a platform for mRNA-LNP therapy. Our study highlights the potential of this CRISPR-based system in the controllable induction of pyroptosis, offering an innovative therapeutic strategy for treating RNA-heterogeneous diseases.
