N/S co-doped carbon nanosheets for the efficient electrochemical extraction of uranium from seawater

Tan Yi,Jun-long Huang,Zong-heng Cen,Yi-wei Ji,Shao-hong Liu

Carbon-based catalysts are promising materials for the electrochemical extraction of uranium from seawater. However, their practical application is often limited by high cost and low catalytic activity. Using low-cost polystyrene sulfonic acid resin and melamine as raw materials, a class of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanosheets (CNSs) with high catalytic activity has been developed by a low-temperature hydrothermal treatment and high-temperature carbonization. Because of their high conductivity and high catalytic activity, CNS-based electrodes can catalyze uranyl ions in seawater into easily recoverable Na 2 O(UO 3 ·H 2 O) x precipitates at −2 V, and achieve an extraction capacity of up to 3 923.7 mg g −1 with a uranium removal of 98.1% in uranium-spiked seawater (1×10 3 mg L −1 ). In situ Raman spectroscopy showed that a large number of uranium compounds appeared on the surface of the composite electrode within 40 min of extraction. The electrode also recovered 72.7% of the uranium in natural seawater, demonstrating excellent prospects for this application. This work provides a new approach into the design of low-cost, metal-free electrocatalysts for the efficient uranium extraction from natural seawater.

Pd-Pt bimetallene for the energy-saving electrochemical hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Xi-Lai Liu,Wei Zhong,Yu-Fan Jin,Tian-Jiao Wang,Xue Xiao,Pei Chen,Yu Chen,Xuan Ai

The electrochemical hydrogenation (ECH) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) represents a pivotal pathway for the electrocatalytic upgrading of biomass-based organic small molecules, offering significant reductions in energy consumption while producing value-added chemicals. The conversion of HMF to DHMF is challenging due to the high reduction potential and complex intermediates of HMF ECH under neutral environment. Also, the total efficiency is hindered by sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Herein, we report a synthesis of highly alloyed Pd-Pt bimetallene (Pd 3 Pt 1 BML) for HMF ECH coupled with formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). Through a combination of in-situ Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, and theoretical calculations, we elucidate that the HMF adsorption on Pd atoms, strategically separated by Pt atoms, is weakened compared to pure Pd surfaces. Additionally, Pt atoms serve as crucial providers of active hydrogen to neighboring Pd atoms, synergistically enhancing the reaction kinetics of HMF conversion with a Faradaic efficiency >93%. Meanwhile, the atomically dispersed Pt atoms endow Pd 3 Pt 1 BML with high electrochemical performance for the direct pathway of FAOR at the anode. As a result, a FAOR-assisted HMF ECH system equipped with bifunctional Pd 3 Pt 1 BML achieves the energy-efficient conversion of HMF to DHMF at electrolysis voltage of 0.72 V at 10 mA cm –2 . This work provides insights into the rational design of bifunctional catalysts featuring two distinct types of active sites for advanced energy electrocatalysis and ECH.

Plasma-assisted preparation of NiCoAl-layered double hydroxides with alarge interlayer spacing on carbon cloth forelectrochemical deionization

Qiu-tong Jiang,Guo-qing Wang,Yi Li,Hong-wei Huang,Qian Li,Jian Yang

Capacitive deionization has been considered an emerging desalination technique in recent years, especially for its economic and energy-saving characteristics for brackish water. However, there are currently few studies on chloride ion removal electrodes, and the slow desalination kinetics limits their development. Ar-NiCoAl- layered double hydroxide (LDH)@ACC materials with an increased interlayer spacing were prepared by the in-situ growth of NiCoAl-LDHs nanosheet arrays on acid-treated carbon cloth (ACC) and subsequent Ar plasma treatment. The carbon cloth suppresses the agglomeration of the NiCoAl-LDHs nanosheets and improves the electrical conductivity, while the plasma treatment increases the interlayer spacing of NiCoAl-LDHs and improves its hydrophilicity. This provides rapid diffusion channels and more interlayer active sites for chloride ions, achieving high desalination kinetics. A hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) cell was assembled using Ar-NiCoAl-LDHs@ACC as the chloride ion removal electrode and activated carbon as the sodium ion removal electrode. This HCDI cell achieved a high desalination capacity of 93.26 mg g −1 at 1.2 V in a 1000 mg L −1 NaCl solution, a remarkable desalination rate of 0.27 mg g −1 s −1 , and a good charge efficiency of 0.97. The capacity retention remained above 85% after 100 cycles in a 300 mg L −1 NaCl solution at 0.8 V. The work provides new ideas for the controlled preparation of two-dimensional metal hydroxide materials with a large interlayer spacing and the design of high-performance electrochemical chlorine ion removal electrodes.

Si-Wu-Tang attenuates liver fibrosis via regulating lncRNA H19-dependent pathways involving cytoskeleton remodeling and ECM deposition

Jiaorong QU,Xiaoyong XUE,Zhixing WANG,Zhi MA,Kexin JIA,Fanghong LI,Yinhao ZHANG,Ruiyu WU,Fei ZHOU,Piwen ZHAO,Xiaojiaoyang LI

ABSTRACT Liver fibrosis is a dynamic wound-healing response characterized by the agglutination of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Si-Wu-Tang (SWT), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, is known for treating gynecological diseases and liver fibrosis. Our previous studies demonstrated that long non-coding RNA H19 (H19) was markedly upregulated in fibrotic livers while its deficiency markedly reversed fibrogenesis. However, the mechanisms by which SWT influences H19 remain unclear. Thus, we established a bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced liver fibrosis model to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of SWT on various cells in the liver. Our results showed that SWT markedly improved ECM deposition and bile duct reactions in the liver. Notably, SWT relieved liver fibrosis by regulating the transcription of genes involved in the cytoskeleton remodeling, primarily in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), and influencing cytoskeleton-related angiogenesis and hepatocellular injury. This modulation collectively led to reduced ECM deposition. Through extensive bioinformatics analyses, we determined that H19 acted as a miRNA sponge and mainly inhibited miR-200, miR-211, and let7b, thereby regulating the above cellular regulatory pathways. Meanwhile, SWT reversed H19-related miRNAs and signaling pathways, diminishing ECM deposition and liver fibrosis. However, these protective effects of SWT were diminished with the overexpression of H19 in vivo . In conclusion, our study elucidates the underlying mechanisms of SWT from the perspective of H19-related signal networks and proposes a potential SWT-based therapeutic strategy for the treatment of liver fibrosis.

Size-dependent strong metal-support interaction modulation of Pt/CoFe2O4 catalysts

Yangyang Li,Jingyi Yang,Botao Qiao,Tao Zhang

Supported metal catalysts are the backbone of heterogeneous catalysis, playing a crucial role in the modern chemical industry. Metal-support interactions (MSIs) are known important in determining the catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts. This is particularly true for single-atom catalysts (SACs) and pseudo-single-atom catalysts (pseudo-SACs), where all metal atoms are dispersed on, and interact directly with the support. Consequently, the MSI of SACs and pseudo-SACs are theoretically more sensitive to modulation compared to that of traditional nanoparticle catalysts. In this work, we experimentally demonstrated this hypothesis by an observed size-dependent MSI modulation. We fabricated CoFe 2 O 4 supported Pt pseudo-SACs and nanoparticle catalysts, followed by a straightforward water treatment process. It was found that the covalent strong metal-support interaction (CMSI) in pseudo-SACs can be weakened, leading to a significant activity improvement in methane combustion reaction. This finding aligns with our recent observation of CoFe 2 O 4 supported Pt SACs. By contrast, the MSI in Pt nanoparticle catalyst was barely affected by the water treatment, giving rise to almost unchanged catalytic performance. This work highlights the critical role of metal size in determining the MSI modulation, offering a novel strategy for tuning the catalytic performance of SACs and pseudo-SACs by fine-tuning their MSIs.

Mild polarization electric field in ultra-thin BN-Fe-graphene sandwich structure for efficient nitrogen reduction

Ziyuan Xiu,Wei Mu,Xin Zhou,Xiaojun Han

The electrocatalytic N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) is expected to supersede the traditional Haber-Bosch technology for NH 3 production under ambient conditions. The activity and selectivity of electrochemical NRR are restricted to a strong polarized electric field induced by the catalyst, correct electron transfer direction, and electron tunneling distance between bare electrode and active sites. By coupling the chemical vapor deposition method with the poly(methyl methacylate)-transfer method, an ultrathin sandwich catalyst, i.e., Fe atoms (polarized electric field layer) sandwiched between ultrathin (within electron tunneling distance) BN (catalyst layer) and graphene film (conducting layer), is fabricated for electrocatalytic NRR. The sandwich catalyst not only controls the transfer of electrons to the BN surface in the correct direction under applied voltage but also suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction by constructing a neutral polarization electric field without metal exposure. The sandwich electrocatalyst NRR system achieve NH 3 yield of 8.9 μg h −1 cm −2 and Faradaic Efficiency of 21.7%. The N 2 adsorption, activation, and polarization electric field changes of three sandwich catalysts (BN-Fe-G, BN-Fe-BN, and G-Fe-G) during the electrocatalytic NRR are investigated by experiments and density functional theory simulations. Driven by applied voltage, the neutral polarized electric field induced by BN-Fe-G leads to the high activity of electrocatalytic NRR.

Mo-promoted Pd/NaY catalyst for indirect oxidative carbonylation of methanol to dimethyl carbonate

Ke Huang,Shicheng Yuan,Rongyan Mei,Ge Yang,Peng Bai,Hailing Guo,Chunzheng Wang,Svetlana Mintova

A chlorine-free catalyst consisting of zeolite Y modified with Pd (Pd/NaY) catalyst has been prepared and used in the indirect oxidative carbonylation of methanol to dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The activity and stability of the catalyst were further improved by introducing molybdenum into Pd/NaY using a top-down approach (Pd-Mo/NaY catalyst). The Pd-Mo/NaY catalyst exhibited higher stability compared to the Pd/NaY. A high CO conversion of 97% and DMC selectivity of 80% during a 30-hour catalytic test for the Pd-Mo/NaY were obtained. Furthermore, the incorporation of Mo was found to partially heal the silanols and hinder the aggregation of Pd in the Pd-Mo/NaY catalyst. The interactions between Mo and Pd increased the amount of active Pd 2+ species and enhanced the adsorption of CO reactant on the Pd-Mo/NaY catalyst. The key reaction intermediate of COOCH 3 * was captured by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy . The stabilization of active Pd 2+ species contributed to the enhanced catalytic activity of the Pd-Mo/NaY catalyst in the indirect oxidative carbonylation of methanol to DMC reaction.

Selective utilization of formaldehyde stabilizing additive and methoxy groups in lignin for the production of high-carbon-number arenes

Lin Dong,Zhiqiang Fang,Qianbo Yuan,Yong Fan,Yong Yang,Ping Wang,Shixiong Sheng,Yanqin Wang,Zupeng Chen

Many strategies have been proposed to produce arenes from lignin as liquid fuel additives. However, the development of these methods is limited by the low yield of products, low atom utilization, and inefficient lignin depolymerization. Herein, we develop an energy-efficient synthetic method for the production of high-carbon-number arenes from sustainable lignin with a total yield of 23.1 wt%. Particularly, high carbon number arenes are obtained by fully utilizing the formaldehyde stabilizing additive and the methoxy group in lignin. The process begins with the reductive depolymerization of formaldehyde-stabilized lignin, followed by transmethylation between lignin monomers over Au/Nb 2 O 5 catalyst, and the Ru/Nb 2 O 5 -catalyzed hydrodeoxygenation. This work demonstrates the potential of value-added arenes production directly from lignin.

Self-supported film catalyst integrated with multifunctional carbon nanotubes and Ni-Ni(OH)2 heterostructure for promoted hydrogen evolution

Wancheng Zhao,Jiapeng Ma,Dong Tian,Baotao Kang,Fangquan Xia,Jing Cheng,Yajun Wu,Mengyao Wang,Gang Wu

ABSTRACT In order to reduce energy consumption in water electrolysis, it is of great importance to design active and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution, especially based on earth-abundant metal. Here we integrate carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Ni-Ni(OH) 2 heterostructure multifunctional components to design a self-supported 3D CNTs-Ni-Ni(OH) 2 catalyst for HER by composite deposition and subsequent in-situ oxidation . In alkaline solution, this designed CNTs-Ni-Ni(OH) 2 catalyst exhibits 0 mV onset overpotential, and overpotentials of 65 mV and 109 mV at 10 and 50 mA/cm 2 respectively. Electrochemical measurements, characterizations, and simulation results attribute the outstanding performance to the incorporation of CNTs and heterostructure . CNTs induce the formation 3D catalytic surface, enhance electrochemical active surface area , and more importantly weaken the adsorption of H. Moreover, the formation of heterostructure, especially reversible Ni(OH) 2 , supplies active sites and adjusts the adsorption strength of H atom to an optimal value. CNTs and heterostructure synergistically facilitate water adsorption, promote water dissociation, and accelerate H 2 desorption. Significantly, integration of multifunctional components supplies a distinct strategy for development of cost-effective electrocatalyst with outstanding performance.

Selective photooxidation of methane to C1 oxygenates by constructing heterojunction photocatalyst with mild oxidation ability

Hantao Gong,Caihao Deng,Peipei He,Mingjie Liu,Yiliang Cai,Yiwen Yang,Qiwei Yang,Zongbi Bao,Qilong Ren,Siyu Yao,Zhiguo Zhang

Selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of methane to value-added chemicals offers a promising pathway for sustainable chemical industry, yet remains a huge challenge owing to the consecutive overoxidation of primary products. Here, a type II heterojunction were constructed in Ag-AgBr/ZnO to reduce the oxidation potential of stimulated holes and prevent the undesirable CH 4 overoxidation side reactions. For photocatalytic oxidation of methane under ambient temperature, the products yield of 1499.6 μmol g cat −1 h −1 with a primary products selectivity of 77.9% was achieved over Ag-AgBr/ZnO, which demonstrate remarkable improvement compared to Ag/ZnO (1089.9 μmol g cat −1 h −1 , 40.1%). The superior activity and selectivity result from the promoted charge separation and the redox potential matching with methane activation after introducing AgBr species. Mechanism investigation elucidated that the photo-generated holes transferred from the valence band of ZnO to that of AgBr, which prevent H 2 O oxidation and enhance the selective generation of •OOH radical.

Self-sacrificing MOF-derived hierarchical porous In2S3 nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Tingting Yang,Bin Wang,Paul K. Chu,Jiexiang Xia,Huaming Li

ABSTRACT Fabrication of porous hierarchical structures is an effective method to improve the photo-absorption capability of photocatalysts by enhancing the photogenerated charge separation and transfer. In-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are utilized as self-sacrificial templates to synthesize various hierarchical In 2 S 3 photocatalysts including hollow nanotubes/microtubes/ spheres and dodecahedrons by the sulfidation process. The porous hierarchical structures improve multiple refraction and reflection of the incident light, provide larger surface areas , and increase the light utilization and phase separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers. As a result, the photocatalytic efficiency is much higher than that of the bulk and commercial In 2 S 3 . In particular, the hollow In 2 S 3 nanotubes (HNTs) have the best photocatalytic properties boosting degradation rates of organic pollutants that are 135.6 and 446.9 times than those of the bulk and commercial-grade In 2 S 3 , respectively. Theoretical calculations, optical/electrical characterization, and free radical trapping experiments reveal that under the condition of light, the photogenerated electron hole pairs produced in In 2 S 3 -HNT can effectively separate due to its hierarchical porous structure. So, the In 2 S 3 -HNT can accumulate more reactive oxygen radicals. This novel self-sacrificial template method has large potential in the design and fabrication of hierarchical high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Photo-thermal cooperation for the conversion of CO2 and CH4 with H2O to C2 oxygenates over SrTiOx supported CuCo

Yanru Zhu,Zhijun Zhang,Jian Zhang,Shuangjiang Jiang,Zhe An,Hongyan Song,Xin Shu,Wei Xi,Lirong Zheng,Jing He

ABSTRACT Photosynthesis is a potential strategy to enable endergonic process that usually needs high-temperature in thermochemistry to supply the energy for inert-bond activation and/or strong endothermic reaction . The conversion of CO 2 into value-added C 2 -oxygenates is a promising process to realize artificial photosynthesis , but suffers from relatively lower efficiency due to complex multi-electron (≥ 10) transfer processes and sluggish kinetics of C–C coupling. This work proposes an all-new H 2 O-promoted strategy for efficient production of C 2 oxygenates from the concurrent activation and subsequent co-conversion of CO 2 with CH 4 under photo-thermal cooperation, in which photocatalytic H 2 O-splitting derived active hydrogen species for CO 2 activation, and concomitant active oxygen species for CH 4 activation. A formation rate of as high as 2.05 mmol g −1 h −1 for C 2 -oxygenates (CH 3 CHO and CH 3 CH 2 OH) in a selectivity of > 86% has been afforded over SrTiO x supported CuCo under 200 °C and ultraviolet-visible illumination. It has been revealed that SrTiO x drives photocatalytic H 2 O-splitting under the excitation primary from ultraviolet light, paired Cu I /Cu 0 sites promote the formation of *CH x O intermediate from CO 2 , Co sites conduct CH 4 -to-*CH 3 , and C–C coupling of *CH x O and *CH 3 on adjacent Cu-Co facilitates the generation of C 2 -oxygenates.
