An effective solid contact for an all-solid-state polymeric membrane Cd2+-selective electrode: Three-dimensional porous graphene-mesoporous platinum nanoparticle composite

Jinghui Li,Tanji Yin,Wei Qin

The three-dimensional porous graphene-mesoporous platinum nanoparticle (3D PGR-MPN) composite is used as solid contact for developing an all-solid-state polymeric membrane Cd 2+ ion-selective electrode (Cd 2+ -ISE). The 3D PGR with MPNs as cross-linking sites can be synthesized by a facile hydrothermal co-assembly method. The obtained 3D PGR-MPN composite is promising for acting as solid contact due to its unique characteristics such as high interfacial area, superior double layer capacitance, excellent conductivity and high hydrophobicity. The ISE exhibits a stable Nernstian response in the range of 10 −8 –10 −4   M and the detection limit is 10 −8.8   M. The 3D PGR-MPN-based Cd 2+ -ISE shows good potential response and no water layer exists between the polymeric membrane and the 3D PGR-MPN layer. Additionally, the proposed Cd 2+ -ISE is robust to O 2 , CO 2 and light interferences. This work provides a versatile method for preparing an effective solid contact to develop a stable and reliable all-solid-state ISE.

Nanocodelivery of an NIR photothermal agent and an acid-responsive TLR7 agonist prodrug to enhance cancer photothermal immunotherapy and the abscopal effect

Bo Chen,Ruijie Huang,Wei Zeng,Wei Wang,Yuanzeng Min

The immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) greatly limits the actual outcome of immunotherapy. Therefore, it is urgent to develop appropriate strategies to reshape the TME and ultimately induce a strong immune response. Here, we developed a dual-functional liposome loaded with the photothermal agent IR808 near the infrared region (NIR) and Toll-like-receptor-7 (TLR7) agonist loxoribine prodrug (Lipo@IR808@Loxo) to achieve NIR light-triggered photothermal therapy (PTT) and the targeted delivery of immune adjuvants. Under NIR irradiation, Lipo@IR808@Loxo could greatly improve the efficiency of PTT to directly kill tumor cells and release tumor-associated antigens, which could work together with loaded loxoribine to relieve the immunosuppressive TME, effectively promoting the activation of antigen-presenting cells and subsequent antigen presentation . In this way, Lipo@IR808@Loxo could act as an in situ therapeutic cancer vaccine, eventually inducing a potent antitumor T-cell response. When further combined with immune checkpoint blockade, Lipo@IR808@Loxo-mediated photothermal immunotherapy could not only eliminate the primary tumors but also inhibit the growth of distant tumors, thus enhancing the abscopal effect.

Distribution and photodegradation of typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in an ice-water system: Simulation of surface waters with an ice cover

Yakun Wang,Ziwei Song,Liwen Zhang,Deming Dong,Zhuojuan Li,Heyang Sun,Liting Wang,Zhiyong Guo

In surface waters at middle and high latitudes during winter, the coexistence of ice and water is a natural phenomenon. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as emerging contaminants have been found frequently in aquatic environments, including waters that are seasonally covered in ice. However, little is available for the environmental behaviors and fate of NSAIDs in ice, particularly in the system where ice and water coexist. In this study, the distribution and photodegradation of model NSAIDs naproxen (NPX), diclofenac (DCF), and acetaminophen (APAP) in an ice-water system were investigated. The findings demonstrated a 66.7%, 60.5%, and 66.7% increase in the ice-water distribution coefficient K iw of NPX, DCF, and APAP with initial concentrations of 10 ng L −1 relative to 500 ng L −1 . The K iw values were in decreased order of DCF, NPX, and APAP. The photodegradation rate constants of NPX, DCF, and APAP in ice increased by 27.0%, 35.6%, and 56.6% relative to those in water. With the increase in freezing time, the contribution ratios of distribution to the mass loss of NPX, DCF, and APAP increased by 19.9%, 21.1%, and 16.1%, respectively. The ratios of photodegradation to the mass loss of NPX, DCF, and APAP decreased by 5.0%, 5.7%, and 0.9%, respectively. An ice cover as the predominant factor could affect the distribution and photodegradation of drugs in the surface water. This study can close a knowledge gap regarding the transport and transformation of NSAIDs in the ice-water system and provide fresh insights into the behaviors and fate of emerging contaminants in seasonally ice-covered waters.

Construction of an FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 monolith electrocatalyst with an increased number of active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity toward water oxidation

Huanyu Chen,Jia-Qi Bai,Yuxue Wei,Jingshuai Chen,Song Sun,Chang-Jie Mao

The exploration of high-efficiency and Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, an ultrafine FeNi–Mo2C composite immobilized on the surface of SiO2 support is fabricated through annealing a mixture of Fe, Ni and Mo precursors and SiO2 nanospheres. The electronic structure of the FeNi alloy is tuned by combining with Mo2C, forming a hybrid architecture with enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites. The introduced SiO2 nanospheres reduce the nanoparticle size of the FeNi–Mo2C composite, further increasing the population of the surface electrochemically active sites. Benefiting from the compositional and structural merits, the FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 electrocatalyst exhibits excellent OER behavior with a small overpotential of 180 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, an ultra-small Tafel slope of 11.0 mV dec−1, and good stability in alkaline media. The outstanding OER performance is attributed to the increased number and enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites due to the synergistic effect of each component. This study provides a promising way to design and develop an advanced electrocatalyst towards water oxidation.

Palladium metallated shell layer of shell@core MOFs as an example of an efficient catalyst design strategy for effective olefin hydrogenation reaction

Yanyan Gong,Ye Yuan,Cheng Chen,Somboon Chaemchuen,Francis Verpoort

Facile strategies for noble metal dispersion in the shell-layer of core–shell structured metal–organic frameworks based on Zr-MOFs (UiO-66@Pd-UiO-67-BPY) was developed. The robust structure of the core-structure UiO-66 was firstly synthesized before covering up with a shell-structure of UiO-67-BPY obtaining the core–shell structure (UiO-66@UiO-67-BPY). The metallation with active palladium species (Pd II ) was designed on the shell-layer of core–shell MOFs via a post-synthetic method. The Pd species were coordinated explicitly in a bidentate manner to the bipyridyl linkers of the shell-structure (UiO-67-BPY). Excellent dispersion of Pd in the shell structure was obtained, resulting in UiO-66@Pd-UiO-67-BPY, as confirmed from characterizations. Taking advantage of the designed catalyst, the synthesized UiO-66@Pd-UiO-67-BPY was examined for the catalytic hydrogenation reaction. The results revealed an excellent catalytic performance of UiO-66@Pd-UiO-67-BPY compared with the traditional catalyst Pd-UiO-67-BPY. Moreover, the designed catalyst structure exhibited outstanding performance and paved the way towards a cost-effective catalyst synthesis based on MOFs combined with a noble metal.

Preparation of an Anion Exchange Membrane by Pyridine-Functionalized Polyether Ether Ketone To Improve Alkali Resistance Stability for an Alkali Fuel Cell

Yongjiang Yuan,Tingyu Zhang,Zhe Wang

A highly stable anion exchange membrane (AEM) is constructed by linking bipyridine to a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymer. First, PEEK is prepared by the polycondensation reaction; N-bromosuccinimide and benzoyl peroxide are used for the bromination reaction; and then pyridine or 4,4′-bipyridine is connected to PEEK by the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction. The successful preparation of the target product was confirmed by the collaborative analysis of the Fourier transform infrared spectrum and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. The ionic conductivity test showed that the highest hydroxide conductivity of PyBPEEK-50% and BiPyBPEEK-50% at 80 °C reached 36.99 and 32.05 mS cm–1, respectively, which proved that they can meet the basic requirements. The alkali stability test showed that the ionic conductivity of the membrane could still reach 88.46% after 750 h of immersion in 1 M NaOH at room temperature, which proved that the cross-linking structure composed of 4,4′-bipyridine effectively weakened the attack of OH– on AEMs. In addition, the cross-linked structure effectively balances the loss of mechanical properties as a result of water absorption and membrane swelling. The swelling rate of BiPyBPEEK-50% at 80 °C is only 4.4%, and the tensile strength can reach 66 MPa. Therefore, to avoid the introduction of too many uncontrollable factors in the complicated synthesis process, this work used a simple method to synthesize AEMs based on the bipyridine cross-linked structure and compared its performance gains and losses through non-cross-linked membranes. The potential application value of this method in the field of fuel cells is verified.

Nazli Mert-Ozupek,Gizem Calibasi-Kocal,Nur Olgun,Yasemin Basbinar,Levent Cavas,Hulya Ellidokuz

Biological invasion is the successful spread and establishment of a species in a novel environment that adversely affects the biodiversity, ecology, and economy. Both invasive and non-invasive species of theCaulerpagenus secrete more than thirty different secondary metabolites. Caulerpin is one of the most common secondary metabolites in genusCaulerpa. In this study, caulerpin found in invasiveCaulerpa cylindraceaand non-invasiveCaulerpa lentilliferaextracts were analyzed, quantified, and compared using high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) for the first time. The anticancer activities of caulerpin against HCT-116 and HT-29 colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines were also tested. Caulerpin levels were found higher in the invasive form (108.83 ± 5.07 µg mL−1and 96.49 ± 4.54 µg mL−1). Furthermore, caulerpin isolated from invasiveCaulerpadecreased cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50 values were found between 119 and 179 µM), inhibited invasion-migration, and induced apoptosis in CRC cells. In comparison, no cytotoxic effects on the normal cell lines (HDF and NIH-3T3) were observed. In conclusion, HPTLC is a quick and novel method to investigate the caulerpin levels found inCaulerpaextracts, and this paper proposes an alternative utilization method for invasiveC. cylindraceadue to significant caulerpin content compared to non-invasiveC. lentillifera. Keywords:bioinvasion;Caulerpa;colorectal cancer;HPTLC;MALDI-TOF/MS

Ultra-low amount Pt-doped Co2P/Ni2P on nickel foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction in an alkaline electrolyte

Xin Xiao,Dongping Sun,Xiaoheng Liu,Bo Qiu,Xingyou Xu,Dongen Zhang,Tao Yang

It is still a challenge to design an efficient and low-cost electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline electrolyte. Herein, ultra-low amount Pt-doped Co2P/Ni2P on nickel foam (Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF) was facilely synthesized via an in situ controlled growth and used as an efficient electrocatalyst for electrolytic water splitting into hydrogen. Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF was achieved by a two-step procedure that was conducted by the hydrothermal approach to obtain the precursor, followed by a subsequent in situ phosphorization procedure. Due to the NF substrate being supermacroporous, more active sites of Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF could be exposed, improving electron transport and providing open-channels for the rapid release of H2. Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic performance towards HER with an overpotential of 75 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in an alkaline electrolyte and a small Tafel slope of 64 mV dec−1. This work provided a facile and reliable synthetic approach to improve transition metal phosphides (TMPs) for electrocatalytic HER performance in alkaline electrolytes.

An X-ray detector with an ultra-low detection limit based on bulk two-dimensional perovskite PEA2PbBr4 single crystals grown in HBr solution

Hao Dong,Xin Liu,Hu Wang,Zhilong Chen,Fenghua Li,Pengxiang Wang,Jie Fu,Yuchuan Shao

Achieving a lower detection limit is always crucial for X-ray detectors in medical imaging. Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are superior candidate materials for X-ray detection due to their high bulk resistivity, excellent environmental stability, and negligible ion migration under high bias. However, the reported detection limit of 2D perovskite X-ray detectors still apparently lags behind that of their 3D analogues due to the difficulty in the growth of high-quality bulk 2D perovskite single crystals (SCs). Herein, we demonstrate an X-ray detector with an ultra-low detection limit based on high-quality bulk PEA2PbBr4 SCs grown in HBr solution for the first time. According to the solubility difference of reactants, a slowly varying nucleation curve for the precursor solution is designed to stabilize growth rate and reduce defect density during crystal growth. The fabricated Au/PEA2PbBr4/Au detector shows a low noise level of 10−5 nA Hz−1/2 and an ultra-low dark current drift of 6.6 × 10−7 pA cm−1 V−1 s−1. Together with a commendable hole lifetime of 2.76 μs and hole mobility-lifetime product of 5.8 × 10−4 cm2 V−1, the produced detector exhibits a high sensitivity of 2998 μC Gyair s−1 cm−2 and a record-low detection limit of 0.79 nGyair s−1. The current work would be beneficial for the development of next generation medical imaging.

Properties of an active film based on chitosan/silk fibroin loaded with an essential oil microemulsion and its application in preservation of strawberries

Xiaoxiao Chen,Xiaoping Hu,Jianhua Zhang

This study aimed to enhance the weak antibacterial activity of silk fibroin (SF) by creating a composite edible coating film. The film was composed of chitosan (CS), SF, and a 3% (v/v) cinnamon essential oil microemulsion (CEOM), which showed excellent inhibition rates of over 99% against two bacteria and four fungi. The resulting film had a transparency of 84.6% and a contact angle of 61.85° on hydrophobic surfaces. In addition, it exhibited a low water vapor permeability of 1.09 × 10 −12 g·cm −1 ·s −1 ·Pa −1 . These properties make it ideal for use in food coating applications. To assess the preservation capabilities of the composite films, strawberries were coated with different films: CS, SF, SF-CEOM, and SF-CS-CEOM. The results showed that the SF-CS-CEOM film had a similar effect to the SF-CEOM film in suppressing the deterioration of strawberries, when compared to the untreated group, and the shelf life of the strawberries was extended from 2 days to 8 days. The SF-CS-CEOM film inhibits oxidation and metabolism by reducing gas exchange, thereby protecting the integrity of cell membranes, maintaining firmness, and reducing weight loss, while delaying the onset of spoilage by inhibiting microbial growth.

Exploring the influence of surface roughness on the interface phenomenon between an air bubble and a glass bead: An experimental and theoretical investigation

Mianyan Yang,Zhijun Zhang

The effect of surface roughness on the detachment between the bubbles and the glass beads (soda-lime) was comprehensively investigated. Glass beads with dimensions of −1.20 + 1.12 mm were acid etched to achieve varying degrees of surface roughness, followed by silanation reactions conducted for different immersion times. The characterization of surface roughness was conducted using a ContourGT-K 3D optical microscope. Measurements of receding contact angle, induction time and detachment force were conducted to assess the influence of surface roughness on bubble and glass bead attachment/detachment. It is observed that the etching surface of glass beads with uniform protrusions and depressions, the hydrophobic glass beads exhibited shorter induction time, larger contact angle and higher critical detachment force. However, the stability of aggregates of bubbles and hydrophilic glass beads was reduced, making them prone to detachment. Moreover, larger protrusions and depressions on hydrophobic glass bead surfaces with increasing etching time, resulted in an increase in induction time, a decrease in receding contact angle and critical detachment force. The stability of bubbles and hydrophilic glass bead aggregates remained unchanged.

Covalently Immobilized Lipase on a Thermoresponsive Polymer with an Upper Critical Solution Temperature as an Efficient and Recyclable Asymmetric Catalyst in Aqueous Media

Lan-Lan Lou,Huaxin Qu,Wenjun Yu,Bei Wang,Lezi Ouyang,Shuangxi Liu,Wuzong Zhou

Graphical Thermoresponsive lipase catalyst : A UCST-type thermoresponsive polymer–lipase conjugate was exploited and applied as an asymmetric biocatalyst in the kinetic resolution of racemic α-methylbenzyl butyrate, exhibiting high catalytic performance, easy recovery, and good durability. A thermoresponsive lipase catalyst with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of about 26 °C was exploited by covalent immobilization of an enzyme, Pseudomonas cepacia lipase (PSL), onto poly(acrylamide- co -acrylonitrile) by glutaraldehyde coupling. The experimental conditions for the PSL immobilization were optimized. The immobilized PSL was much more stable for wide ranges of temperature and pH than free PSL. The material was also evaluated as an asymmetric catalyst in the kinetic resolution of racemic α-methylbenzyl butyrate at 55 °C in an aqueous medium and exhibited high catalytic performance and stability. Up to 50 % conversion and 99.5 % product enantiomeric excess were achieved, thus providing highly pure enantiomers. This biocatalyst could be easily recovered by simple decantation for reuse based on temperature-induced precipitation. It showed good reusability and retained 80.5 % of its original activity with a well reserved enantioselectivity in the 6th cycle. This work would shed light on the future development of new UCST-type enzyme catalysts.
