In-situ constructing slow-release Li-Al-O interface layer for lithium metal batteries to enhance interface stability and suppress lithium dendrite growth

Dexuan Pei,Ziying Liu,Rui Ma,Shuo Huang,Shuen Hou,Min Liu,Guozhong Cao,Hongyun Jin

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) have shown extraordinary promise for use in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) because of their tunable merits in ionic conductivity and mechanical flexibility. Their practical application is however hindered by the poor interface stability and the uncontrollable Li dendrite formation. Addressing these two issues, we report an in-situ formed Li-Al-O interface layer between CPEs and Li metal anode by introducing Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles in CPEs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the CPE-Al 2 O 3 could slowly release Al atoms which react with Li metal to form the current Li-Al-O interface layer. We highlight that the Li-Al-O interface layer can stabilize lithium deposition/stripping over 1400 h in lithium symmetric batteries, and afford an impressive cycle life of 300 cycles in LiFePO 4 -Li batteries with almost no capacity loss. The present findings demonstrate that in-situ constructing a slow-release Li-Al-O interface layer is an easy and effective approach to stabilize the solid electrolyte interface and suppress the Li dendrites growth. Furthermore, the obtained batteries show excellent cycling stability, indicating the strategy with in-situ formed CPEs shed light on improving the processability of fabrication of high-performance electrolytes.

Combustion/decomposition characteristics of 3D-printed Al/CuO, Al/Fe2O3, Al/Bi2O3 and Al/PTFE hollow filaments

Lin Zhong,Xu Zhou,Xinying Huang,Dawei Zheng,Yaofeng Mao,Ruihao Wang,Dunju Wang

In recent decades, the preparation of various metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) has been widely reported in pursuit of excellent reactivity and safety. However, there is still relatively little research on structural energetic materials (EMs) through 3D printing of MICs inks. In this work, the hollow filaments with different MICs formulas were prepared by 3D printing using a core-shell nozzle. The morphology, thermal decomposition and gas-generation performance of the filaments were characterized, and the different combustion stages of the filaments were analyzed. The results show that the hollow filaments exhibit shorter unsteady combustion time and significantly increased steady flame propagation rate compared with solid filaments. For the hollow filaments of Al/CuO/F2311 formula (15 wt % of F2311), the unsteady combustion time is as low as 0.65 ms, and the steady flame propagation rate reaches 206.936 g/s. Thermal analysis and constant-volume combustion tests show that Al/CuO/F2311 formula provides the lowest thermal decomposition onset temperature (288 °C) and the best gas-generation performance (peak pressure: 0.191 MPa, pressurization rate: 12.337 MPa/s) compared with other composites.

Al and W co-doped NiO nanoflowers with low crystallinity and rich oxygen vacancies for high stability and selective triethylamine detection

Lanlan Guo,Yanji Feng,Feng Shi,Wei Zhao,Hua Zeng,Tingyu Chen,Yingli Yang,Guodong Wang,Xiaolian Liu,Yan Wang,Xueli Yang

In this work, pure NiO, Al-doped NiO, W-doped NiO and a series of Al/W co-doped NiO nanoflowers were successfully prepared through a simple solvothermal method . Various characterization methods, such as XRD , SEM, TEM, HRTEM and XPS , were used to confirm the physical and chemical properties of the sensitive materials in terms of micro-nano structures, compositions and elemental distributions. The as-obtained Al/W co-doped NiO showed a nanoflower structure with an approximate size of ∼ 200 nm. What's more, among six sensors constructed from the sensitive materials, the sensor based on 3 at% Al 3+ /3 at% W 6+ co-doped NiO (3Al3W-NiO) achieved the highest response (R g /R a =112) toward 100 ppm triethylamine with a low detection limit (1 ppm) at 325 ℃. Besides, this sensor also exhibited excellent response/recovery characteristics and long-term stability. These favorable sensing performances of the 3Al/3 W co-doped NiO sensor are not only modulated by the initial resistance (R a ), but are also closely related to the large specific surface area , porous structures , low crystallinity , rich oxygen vacancies and high Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ ratio in the composite nanomaterials.

Al-based alloys (Al–Ti, Al–Zr, Al–Mo) in composite propellants: multifaceted optimization of combustion and energetics

Huanhuan Gao,Daolun Liang,Yadong Sun,Jianzhong Liu

To address space constraints in solid rocket motors, this study investigates Al–Ti, Al–Zr, and Al–Mo alloys. Their high density enhances energy release per unit volume. Multidimensional analyses—thermal oxidation behavior, ignition/combustion characteristics, and agglomeration properties—were conducted to elucidate how high-density alloys influence Al-based propellant combustion performance and energy release. Results show these high-density alloys exhibit shorter ignition delay time and combustion time, effectively increasing the propellant burning rate of propellants while reducing the pressure exponent. Titration measurements reveal combustion efficiencies of 84.28% (A), 87.33% (AT), 86.79% (AZ), and 85.91% (AM). Among them, Al–Zr demonstrates the most significant optimization effect on combustion performance. Due to the low ignition threshold, Al–Ti significantly suppresses agglomerate formation and accelerates the combustion. Meanwhile, Al–Mo enhances the transport efficiency of oxidizing gases through the phase-change sublimation mechanism of MoO 3 , indirectly boosting combustion efficiency. Furthermore, this work reveals the synergistic mechanisms by which high-density alloys optimize propellant combustion performance via multiple factors. The findings confirm the technical feasibility of simultaneously achieving superior combustion performance, high energy output, and effective agglomeration suppression, providing theoretical and technological guidance for developing advanced high-energy-density solid propellants.

Electrodeposition of Al, Al-Li Alloy, and Li from an Al-Containing Solvate Ionic Liquid under Ambient Conditions

Baoguo Zhang,Zhongning Shi,Lingling Shen,Aimin Liu,Junli Xu,Xianwei Hu

Herein, inspired by previous reports on the electrochemical reduction of Al in diverse electrolyte systems, we describe a novel Al-containing solvate ionic liquid (2:1 (mol/mol) mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and AlCl3) that allows low-temperature electrochemical deposition of Al and features the advantages of low cost, ease of preparation, and high electrochemical stability. Electrodeposition of Al-Li alloy and Li can also be realized in this system. Additionally, the above ionic liquid exhibited a saturated vapor pressure of 0.0012 kPa and a conductivity of 1.32 mS/cm at 298 K, which was acceptable for practical applications. To elucidate the electrochemical deposition mechanism, the ionic components of the 2:1 EC/AlCl3 system were characterized by a range of instrumental analysis techniques and theoretical calculations, and Lewis-acidic cations were identified as the electroactive species for Al electrodeposition. Notably, an Al-Li alloy could be obtained by co-deposition in the new solvate ionic liquid, and Li metal could also be electrodeposited on a high-purity Al plate in the form of Al4Li9 and Li3Al2 under ambient conditions using LiCl as a Li source. Al-containing solvate ionic liquids, which to an extent evolved from organic-salts, are of increasing interest. They are expected to gain more attention in the field of electrochemical metallurgy of active metals, due to their higher tunability and lower price.

A comparative study of thermal kinetics and combustion performance of Al/CuO, Al/Fe2O3 and Al/MnO2 nanothermites

Jiaxing Song,Tao Guo,Miao Yao,Jialin Chen,Wen Ding,Fengli Bei,Yiming Mao,Zhongshen Yu,Junyi Huang,Xiaonan Zhang,Qin Yin,Shuo Wang

The performance of energetic materials is mainly reflected in two aspects, thermal performance and combustion performance. To figure out the differences in reaction performance, in this paper, thermal and combustion properties of Al/CuO, Al/Fe 2 O 3 and Al/MnO 2 nanothermites were studied respectively by thermal analysis and fast heating wire experiments. According to the thermal analysis, the exothermic peak temperature points of Al/MnO 2 , Al/CuO, Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermites were 552.1 °C, 563.1 °C and 565.3 °C, respectively, while the sequence of activation energy calculated from low to high was Al/Fe 2 O 3 , Al/CuO, Al/MnO 2 nanothermites. By the way, the values of Al/CuO and Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermites showed little difference in temperature and activation energy. The ignition energy characterized by direct current had little difference among them, and the sequence from low to high was Al/MnO 2 , Al/Fe 2 O 3 , Al/CuO nanothermites, corresponding to 1.169 A, 1.214 A and 1.221 A, respectively. As for burning rate, Al/CuO burnt the fastest clearly while the Al/Fe 2 O 3 burnt the longest. In terms of combustion performance, Al/CuO and Al/MnO 2 were basically the same, with little splash of sparks, and the concentrations of combustion energy were better. The combustion phenomenon of Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermite was quite unique with a large number of scattered sparks and poor energy concentration. Finally, the intrinsic reasons for above different phenomena of these three nanothermites were analyzed and discussed.

Modified Al negative electrode for stable high-capacity Al—Te batteries

Zhang Xuefeng,Jiao Shuqiang

Metal aluminum batteries (MABs) are considered potential large-scale energy storage devices because of their high energy density, resource abundance, low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness. Given their high electrical conductivity, high theoretical specific capacity, and high discharge potential, Te is considered a potential positive electrode material for MABs. Nonetheless, the critical issues induced by the chemical and electrochemical dissolution of tellurium and subsequent chemical precipitation on bare Al negative electrodes result in poor cycle stability and low discharge capacity of Al—Te batteries. Here an efficient TiB 2 -based modified layer has been proposed to address bare Al electrodes (Al/TB). Consequently, the low-voltage hysteresis and long cycle life of the Al/TB negative electrode have been achieved. In addition, the electrochemical performance of the Al—Te battery based on the Al/TB negative electrode is dramatically improved. Furthermore, the modified separator technology is introduced to match with the as-designed Al/TB negative electrode. Therefore, the record-setting long-term cycle stability of up to 500 cycles has been achieved in the Al—Te battery. The facile strategy also opens a potential route for other high-energy density battery systems, such as Al—S and Al—Se batteries.

Suppressing Al dendrite growth towards a long-life Al-metal battery

Yu Long,Huan Li,Mingchun Ye,Zhengyu Chen,Zihan Wang,Ying Tao,Zhe Weng,Shi-Zhang Qiao,Quan-Hong Yang

Great progress has been made in the development of cathode materials for Al-metal batteries . However, the in-depth study of Al anodes, especially the battery instability caused by Al dendrite growth, has not received much attention. In this work, we have identified the in-situ formation of Al dendrite growth, which is proved to bottleneck the practical use of Al-metal batteries. The dendrite formation severely affects battery performance, such as voltage and efficiency fluctuations, unstable cycling, etc. To further demonstrate the detailed growing process of dendrites, we make a comprehensive investigation into the interfacial chemistry of Al anode. We have found that the naturally formed Al 2 O 3 surface film is dissolved in the ionic liquid electrolyte during Al plating, accompanied by the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase containing Al-Cl and Al-O like species on the anode surface before dendrite growth. To suppress this dendrite growth, we propose the use of porous Al, which provides a homogeneous ion flux and decreases the local current density. As a result, the porous anode maintains stable cycling over a wide range of current densities and areal capacities. The Al-graphite battery shows stable cycling up to 18000 times without capacity decay. This work suggests the significance of suppressing dendrite growth for the real applications and commercialization of Al-metal batteries and will draw attention to the battery design from the anode side .

Multi-mode sensing platform for gallic acid determination based on the peroxidase-like activity of magnetic Fe3O4@Co/Ni/Al-LDH nanospheres

Yuanyi Wu,Yumei Xiao,Yang Ju,Yanque Sun,Jialin He,Tian Liu,Miao He,Kaiyong Wang,Yi Yang

The determination of gallic acid (GA), one of the most prevalent antioxidants in various plants, provides information for food nutrition evaluation. A novel colorimetric, fluorescent, and smartphone multi-mode GA sensing platform based on Fe 3 O 4 @Co/Ni/Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanospheres was designed in this study. The core-shell magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Co/Ni/Al-LDH nanospheres were synthesized through a simple co-precipitation approach. They showed dominate peroxidase-like activities capable of oxidizing 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue colored oxidation oxTMB. Meanwhile, the generated oxTMB could quench the fluorescence of neutral red via the inner filter effect. GA acted as an inhibitor to prevent the oxidation of TMB to oxTMB and restoring the fluorescence of neutral red. Under optimized conditions, the linear ranges were 0.5–120 μmol/L with detection limits of 0.137–0.415 μmol/L. Besides, the sensor exhibited good selectivity toward GA over various interferents. Moreover, it was successfully utilized to analyze GA in tea beverages with ideal recoveries of 92.8–105%, demonstrating good reliability and stability in practical applications. This study provided Fe 3 O 4 @Co/Ni/Al-LDH nanospheres as candidate nanozymes for the construction of biosensors. The multi-mode self-checking function and the “turn on” fluorescent sensing strategy offered this sensor superior anti-interference ability, and opens up a new strategy for the determination of antioxidants in foods.

Enhanced phosphate adsorption using Zr-Al and Ce-Al binary oxide nanoparticles

Junxue Li,Lingyi Li,Shengnan Zhang,Wei Cheng

In addressing eutrophication resulting from phosphate accumulation, multi-metallic oxides often outperform single-metallic oxides in phosphate adsorption capacity. While alumina is abundant, its stability in acidic or alkaline environments is limited. Contrastingly, zirconium and cerium oxides demonstrate superior acid and base resistance, alongside specific phosphate affinity. This study focuses on the synthesis of Zr-Al and Ce-Al binary oxide nanoparticles through a sol-gel approach for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions, evaluating their efficiency through batch experiments. By judiciously adjusting the Zr/Al and Ce/Al ratios, binary oxide nanoparticles with distinct structures, grain sizes, surface characteristics, and phosphate adsorption properties were fabricated. Results indicate that Zr(3)Al(10) and Ce(3)Al(10) nanoparticles exhibit optimal phosphate adsorption properties among Zr-Al binary oxide variants and Ce-Al binary oxide counterparts, respectively. Kinetic data conform to the pseudo-second-order model for phosphate adsorption on Zr(3)Al(10) and Ce(3)Al(10), while equilibrium adsorption isotherms align with the Langmuir model. Phosphate adsorption capacities reached 83 mg/g for Zr(3)Al(10) and 210 mg/g for Ce(3)Al(10), positioning them as potent adsorbents. Coexisting anions minimally influence phosphate adsorption on Zr(3)Al(10) and Ce(3)Al(10) nanoparticles, indicating high selectivity towards phosphate, whereas Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions notably enhance phosphate adsorption. Mechanistically, phosphate adsorption on both nanoparticles follows electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and inner-sphere complexation, with surface-OH groups playing a pivotal role. Leveraging the advantageous properties of their parent materials, Zr-Al and Ce-Al binary oxide adsorbents exhibit synergistic effects, enhancing their potential for phosphate removal.

Synthesis and characterization of Al and Ti co-doped polycarbosilane for Si(Al,Ti)CO and Si(Al,Ti)C ceramic fibers

Xiaohong Li,Cai Ye,Jianjun Chen,Meijing Wang

A novel aluminum and titanium co-doped polycarbosilane (PATCS) was synthesized by the reaction of liquid polycarbosilane (LPCS), Al(acac) 3 , and Ti(Cp) 2 Cl 2 . The thermal polymerization mechanism of the PATCS was that Si-H bonds in LPCS reacted with C=C/Ti-Cl bonds in Ti(Cp) 2 Cl 2 and Al-O-C/Al-O=C groups in Al(acac) 3 to form Si-Ti, Si-C-C, Si-O-Al bonds. The TG-DSC results showed that the synthesized PATCS exhibited greater stability and a higher ceramic yield compared to PACS. A novel type Si(Al,Ti)CO ceramic fibers (AT-11) with tensile strength (2222 MPa) were obtained by melt-spining, curing, pyrolysis of the synthesized PATCS. After sintering, the AT-13 showed excellent electromagnetic wave absorption. When the thickness reached 2.3 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) vaule and the EAB were -52.02 dB and 5.12 GHz (RL < −10 dB, 10.64-15.76 GHz), respectively. While the AT-18 fibers showed higher high-temperature creep resistance in the range of 1300∼1700 °C than those of Si(Al)C ceramic fibers.

Comparison analysis of combustion performance and mechanism of Al/PVDF and Al/PTFE

Xinyue Fei,Jiang Liu,Yunlan Sun,Minggao Xu,Baozhong Zhu

Although both aluminum/polyvinylidene fluoride (Al/PVDF) and aluminum/polytetrafluoroethylene (Al/PTFE) systems exhibit excellent combustion performance, the study on comparing their combustion behaviors and the underlying mechanisms responsible for their differences are still relatively limited. Therefore, the advantages and disadvantages of the Al/PVDF and Al/PTFE systems were compared through ignition experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The Al/PTFE system exhibits higher combustion intensity, and the characteristic is attributed to the higher fluorine (F) content in PTFE, which triggers more Al-F reactions. In contrast, the Al/PVDF system exhibits a lower ignition delay time and higher combustion heat, which is attributed to the relatively lower initial decomposition temperature, the higher hydrogen (H) content, and the higher combustion heat in PVDF. Compared to oxygen (O) atoms, H atoms can penetrate the oxide film on the surface of Al particles more rapidly and react with the inner Al atoms, thereby reducing the temperature required for Al atoms to break through the oxide film and participate in reactions.
