Fabrication and performance of mini SiC/SiC composites with an electrophoresis-deposited BN fiber/matrix interphase

Bin Xu,Huiyong Yang,Ruiying Luo,Lianyi Wang,Juntong Huang,Dian Chen

The feasibility of fabricating a BN matrix/fiber interphase of SiC/SiC composites via electrophoresis deposition (EPD) was investigated based on the simplicity and non-destructiveness of the process and the excellent interfacial modification effects of BN. The BN suspension and SiC fiber surface properties were both adjusted to generate suitable conditions for the EPD process of the BN interphase. Next, the deposition dynamics and mechanism were studied under different deposition voltages and time, and the relationship between the deposition morphology of the BN interphase and mechanical properties of the fabricated mini SiC/SiC composites were also discussed. After oxidation at high temperature (600–1000 ℃), the mechanical properties of the mini SiC/SiC composites were studied to verify the oxidation resistance effect of the EPD-deposited BN interphase, whose oxidation resistance mechanism was briefly analyzed as well.

Fabrication of environment-friendly and flexible waterborne epoxy/PVP/h-BN composites for thermal interface material

Zheng-Bai Zhao,Cheng Hu,Yang Wang,Hong-Min Cong,Yong Ma,Ding-Duo Lin,Wei-Li Li,Chao Yan

The solvent-based resins have been applied widely in the preparation of thermal interface material (TIM). However, the use of solvents is harmful to the environment and human health. To address this, an environment-friendly TIM is fabricated by employing waterborne epoxy as a polymer matrix in this research project. The waterborne epoxy resin/polyvinyl pyrrolidone/hexagonal boron nitride (WER/PVP/h-BN) composite is successfully prepared through a facile method. First, the WER/PVP/h-BN mixture is obtained by a one-pot process. Subsequently, the WER/PVP/h-BN composite is fabricated by heat curing. The thermal conductivity of obtained WER/PVP/h-BN composite can reach 1.0921 W/m·K at 40 wt% filler loading. The mechanism of PVP for thermal conductivity enhancement of composites is demonstrated utilizing effective medium theory (EMT) and Fogyel’s models. Furthermore, the mechanical, electrical, and surface properties of WER/PVP/h-BN composites are comprehensively investigated. The valuable information and insight for the design and preparation of environment-friendly TIMs are provided in this paper.

Enhanced thermal conductivity and insulation properties of mica tape with BN coating via electrostatic spraying technology

Yu Feng,Ziyuan He,Zhijie Yang,Wenxin Tang,Qingguo Chi,Qingguo Chen

The bottleneck problem of the development of high-voltage motors to a larger capacity can be solved if the thermal conductivity is improved without sacrificing the insulation characteristics of the main insulation material. In this paper, a spraying technology based on electrospinning is proposed that can evenly spray boron nitride (BN) with high thermal conductivity onto the surface of mica tape. With the increase in BN content, the insulation and thermal conductivity of mica tape are optimized to varying degrees. When the BN content reaches 2.25 wt%, the in-plane conductivity increases from 1.6 to 2.7 w/(m K), while the out-of-plane conductivity increases from 0.17 to 0.26 w/(m K). Additionally, the direct-current (DC) breakdown strength has increased from 90.6 to 96.9 kV/mm and the dielectric constant and dielectric loss are almost unchanged. Finally, through simulation verification, if the modified mica tape is applied to the main insulation of a synchronous motor, the operating temperature of the motor insulation will be reduced from 73.5 to 66.1°C. This study provides a new research idea for the preparation of high thermal conductivity insulating materials.

Large-Scale Synthesis h-BN Films on Copper-Nickel Alloy by Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition

Yuhan Feng,Yumin Zhang,Jipeng Liu,Ye Zhang,Yongshuai Xie

Due to its high thermal and chemical stability, excellent dielectric properties, unique optical properties, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance, the two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is often used in a thermal conductor protective layer in deep ultraviolet light-emitting detector fields. However, due to the complicated growth conditions of h-BN, it is often necessary to prepare h-BN by the CVD method in a high vacuum environment, which is limited to a certain extent in terms of film size and production cost. In order to solve this problem, we proposed a method to prepare h-BN thin films by atmospheric CVD (APCVD). This method does not need a vacuum environment, which reduces energy consumption and cost, and makes the operation simpler and the experimental environment safer. The preparation of high-quality h-BN film was carried out using a Cu-Ni alloy as the growth substrate. The growth process of h-BN film was studied, and the influence of growth parameters on the structure of the h-BN film was explored. The morphological features and elemental composition pairs of the samples were characterized and analyzed, which confirmed that the high-quality h-BN film could be successfully grown on the Cu-Ni alloy substrate by APCVD. The UV detection device prepared by using the prepared h-BN film as the photoresponse material had good photoresponse characteristics and performance stability. It provides a new idea for the low-cost preparation of large-scale h-BN.Keywords:APCVD;h-BN;film;photoelectric devices

Microstructure and anisotropic mechanical properties of B6.5C-TiB2-SiC-BN composites fabricated by reactive hot pressing

Qianglong He,Shi Tian,Jingjing Xie,Cuili Xiang,Hao Wang,Weimin Wang,Zhengyi Fu

B 6.5 C-TiB 2 -SiC-BN composite ceramics were prepared by a novel solid-state reaction using TiCN, B, and Si as raw materials. The final products obtained by hot pressing at 1950 °C possessed a fine microstructure, homogeneous distribution, and excellent mechanical properties . The obtained bulk B 6.5 C-TiB 2 -SiC-BN composite ceramic shows a high relative density (98.8 %). The mechanical properties of the composites are anisotropic because of the orientation growth and structural characteristics of TiB 2 and h-BN grains. The values of hardness, bending strength , and fracture toughness measured along the hot-pressing direction were 19.6 GPa, 801 MPa, and 4.30 MPa m 1/2 , respectively, which were higher than those measured perpendicular to the hot-pressing direction. The formation of twin structures in B 6.5 C and SiC grains and the crack deflections induced by h-BN and TiB 2 grains are beneficial for improving the mechanical properties of these composites.

Synthesis of PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrid for nanocomposite epoxy coating with superior corrosion protective properties

Pengying Wan,Nie Zhao,Fugang Qi,Biao Zhang,Hailong Xiong,Heng Yuan,Bin Liao,Xiaoping Ouyang

A novel PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 nanohybrid was synthesized by depositing Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles modified with γ γ -Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) on the surface of hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) sheets covered with polydopamine (PDA). Then, PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids was dispersed in epoxy resin to prepare composite coating samples. Many characterizations revealed that the functionalized Al 2 O 3 successfully deposited on the surface of PDA-BN platelets and PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids showed good dispersibility in the epoxy resin, and the interfacial adhesion between hybrids and epoxy matrix was improved. Furthermore, the effects of Al 2 O 3 , h-BN and various mixtures of PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids at a low weight fraction of 1 % on the corrosion resistance of epoxy coating were studied by electrochemical measurement and salt spray test. The potentiodynamic polarization test revealed that PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids have a corrosion inhibitive performance. Moreover, the coating resistance of PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 (3:1)/epoxy was enhanced by three orders of magnitude compared with neat epoxy after 5 d immersion. This study provides a promising application prospect for the development of superior metal protective organic coatings.

Ultra-stable phosphor of h-BN white graphene-loaded all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals for white LEDs

Zhihai Wu,Pan Wang,Jun Wu,Jiao Wei,Yanni Sun,Nengping Wang,Zhenfu Zhao

Recently, all-inorganic perovskite (CsPbX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I)) nanocrystals (NCs) have caused extensive attention due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY), high color purity, and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM). Although the excellent optical properties of perovskite NCs (PNCs) endow them good application prospects, their inherent instability severely limits the commercialization process. In this paper, highly-luminescence and ultra-stable phosphor were obtained by loading PNCs onto the surface of amino modified hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) white graphene (PNCs-BNWG), This structural design can effectively suppress the attenuation of photoluminescence (PL) intensity and enhance thermal stability, thereby realizing the high stability and brightness white LEDs. The synthesis process is simple and can be finished in a few minutes to ensure scalable production. Compared with bare PNCs, it can maintain excellent optical properties. The high PL QY and thermal stability mainly stem from the isolation effect that separates PNCs from each other on the surface of BNWG and their superior high transparency as well as thermal conductivity . In addition, multi-color inks are produced by dispersing PNCs-BNWG nanocomposites in PDMS to form a multicolor painting demonstrating high PL QY and wide color gamut.

Effect of boron nitride overlayers on Co@BNNSs/BN-Catalyzed aqueous phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Rong Zhang,Liancheng Wang,Jingzhao Ren,Changchen Hu,Baoliang Lv

The confinement effect known as efficient strategy to enhance the heterocatalytic activity and stability, but a clear view regarding the role of encapsulated overlayers is far from convincing at present, especially, the penetration of substrates with different size. Herein, the experimental evidence about the impacts of BN overlayers on hydrogenation is obtained over Co@BN/BN model catalysts with tuned thinness, in which BN overlayers encapsuled Co particles that dispersed on the defective BN supports, fabricating by the nitridizing of ball-milled BN microplates under NH 3 atmosphere. The thinness and crystallinity of BN shells was simply tuned by controlling the pyrolyzed temperature (600–900 °C). The cinnamaldehyde (CAL) selective hydrogenation is taken as probe reaction due to (1) both larger CAL and small H 2 molecule involved simultaneously, (2) the middle C C and terminal C O bonds all involved. Combined with structural analysis, the results demonstrate that small H 2 molecule can penetrate into the metal-cover interface through the defect sites, then inner Co core dissociate it to atomic H, and the hydrogenation mainly resulting from the spillover of H atoms which occurred on the BN surface. As a result, the thickest BN shells (∼3.4 nm) with ordered-layer-lattice significantly hindered the adsorption and activation of CAL, also the longest H spillover distance led to the lowest activity of Co@BN/BN-900. Instead, Co@BN/BN-600 with merely 2 ∼ 3 overlayers presented the most efficient and highly chemoselective hydrogenation activity. The ultrathin but turbostratic BN overlayers provide more migrating sites also shortened the H spillover distance effectively, and the more favorable C O hydrogenation was also achieved driven by the steric hindrance effect of thinner BN shells. These observations provide new insights towards understanding of confined effect on catalysis process through the accurate regulation of BN shells properties.

One-step synthesis of magnetically recyclable Co@BN core–shell nanocatalysts for catalytic reduction of nitroarenes

Man Du,Qiuwen Liu,Caijin Huang,Xiaoqing Qiu

We present a facile one-step synthesis of chemically stable and magnetic Co@BN core–shell nanoparticles. We found that Co@BN nanoparticles acted as excellent catalysts with high stability and magnetic recyclability for reduction of nitroarenes to aminoarenes under mild reaction conditions. The sample 13.6 wt% Co@BN showed the best catalytic activity for reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). In addition, a significant synergistic effect of the h-BN support was observed during the catalytic reaction by effectively adsorbing/concentrating and ionizing the reactant nitroaromatics. Moreover, the kinetics of the catalytic reaction were investigated at different reaction temperatures, 4-nitrophenol concentrations, sodium borohydride concentrations, metal loadings and catalyst amounts. The activation energy of the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol for 13.6 wt% Co@BN was determined to be 102.93 kJ mol−1. This work provides a clear example of Co@BN core–shell nanoparticles as nanocatalysts.

Enhancing Tribological Performance of Micro-Arc Oxidation Coatings on 6061 Aluminum Alloy with h-BN Incorporation

Xia Zhao,Jingfu Song,Jingyi Lin,Guoqing Wang,Gai Zhao

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings of aluminum alloy have great potential applications due to their high hardness and wear resistance. However, the micro-pores and defects formed in the discharge channels during the MAO process limit its application in the corrosion field. This study delves into the impact of h-BN nanoparticles into MAO coatings on their structure, corrosion resistance, phase composition, and tribological properties. The results show that the incorporation of h-BN particles reduces the porosity and surface roughness of the coating while enhancing its hardness and wear resistance. The best corrosion resistance is obtained at a concentration of 2 g/L h-BN. An analysis of worn surface morphology, corrosion resistance, and friction coefficient change was conducted to evaluate the performance of this coating. This method provides a new approach to enhance the surface hardness and wear resistance of aluminum alloys, which is significant for expanding the application of aluminum alloys in corrosion environments.

Engineering Cu2O@BN photocatalytic heterojunction for synchronous kinetic enhancement and reaction pathway regulation in peroxymonosulfate activation

Yu Deng,Jie Liu,Xiaohui Wu,Tao Zhou,Mingjie Huang

The robust redox cycle of the catalytic center is essential for enhancing sustainable water purification in Fenton-like catalysis. However, the unequal of electron donation and acceptance, especially slow reductive half-reactions, often limit the process. Herein, we developed a photocatalytic heterojunction by integrating cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The h-BN component acts as an electron sink, promoting electron-hole pair separation and efficient Cu + regeneration. This design enhances peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation, achieving rate constants 3.79 and 12.22 times higher than Cu 2 O/PMS/Light and Cu 2 O/PMS systems, respectively. Moreover, the formation of the heterojunction optimizes the electronic structure of Cu 2 O by upshifting the d-band center. This results in stronger PMS adsorption compared to pristine Cu 2 O. Enhanced surface binding weakens the O-O bond in PMS, enabling a shift from a nonradical to a mixed radical-nonradical degradation pathway for BPA. This strategy offers an effective approach of heterostructures to modulating both the kinetics and pathways of Fenton-like catalysis for environmental remediation.

Evaluation analysis of electromagnetic wave absorption for self-assembled 3D graphene skeleton-supported BN/SiC composites

Qiuqi Zhang,Xiao You,Huiying Ouyang,Yuanhang Yang,Zhenzhong Xing,Haodong Gu,Li Tian,Qingliang Shan,Xiangyu Zhang,Jinshan Yang,Shaoming Dong

In this work, a high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber is prepared by the in situ growth of BN and SiC into a self-assembled 3D graphene skeleton via chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). The porous conductive graphene network extends the transmission path of incident microwaves by multiple scattering, and the ceramic coating effectively improves the impedance matching degree. Notably, the EMW absorbing performance of 3D-rGO/BN/SiC can be regulated by the high-temperature oxidation in air. Compared to the original absorbers, after being oxidized at 600 °C for 4 h in air, the optimal RLmin of the composites drops to −47.1 dB and the broadest EAB reaches 11.96 GHz, which can be attributed to the enhanced impedance matching degree. The controllable fabrication of 3D-rGO/BN/SiC composites can provide a guideline for rational design and fabrication of high-performance EMW absorbing materials in practical applications under medium oxidizing temperature.
