Bi-enzymes treatments attenuate cognitive impairment associated with oxidative damage of heavy metals

Chao Chen,Xiaoxin Zhang,Hao Huang,Hongyi Bao,Xiaodong Li,Ye Cheng,Jing Zhang,Yin Ding,Yanguang Yang,Haiying Gu,Donglin Xia

Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cognitive impairment. Lead (Pb) is a common environmental toxicant and plays a vital role in oxidative stress activation. In this study, a superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) containing poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) meso-particles (PLGA@SOD-CAT) were prepared to attenuate cognitive impairment via inhibiting oxidative stress in rats. It was prepared using a double emulsion (water/oil/water phase) technique to minimize the hazardous effects of Pb burden on cognitive impairment. The meso-particles antagonized the Pb-induced cognitive impairments. Behaviour, serum biochemical parameters and biomarkers of oxidative stress in rats were evaluated after they were subjected to intravenous injection with lead nitrate and PLGA@SOD-CAT. Moreover, the potential protective mechanism of PLGA@SOD-CAT was determined. Notably, PLGA@SOD-CAT appreciably agented memory impairment caused by lead nitrate and it could significantly inhibit Pb-induced oxidative stress in the blood. Furthermore, a remarkable reversion effect of cognitive impairments, including escape latency, crossing platform times and time per cent during the platform quadrant, after PLGA@SOD-CAT administration were noted. Therefore, these results suggested that the bi-enzymes platform was a superior product in eliminating Pb-induced cognitive impairments through reducing expression of Pb-associated oxidative stress, and it could potentially be applied in detoxifying heavy metals in blood circulation.

Bi-Directional functionalization of urea-complexed SnO2 for efficient planar perovskite solar cells

Bingyu Gao,Qi Cao,Xingyu Pu,Jiabao Yang,Jian Han,Shuangjie Wang,Tongtong Li,Ziwei He,Xuanhua Li

SnO 2 is regarded as the most promising electron transporting layer (ETL) material for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Various functional groups are introduced onto the SnO 2 surface by interface modification with the purpose of improving the performance of the PSCs. However, most of the modifications are achieved in two-step approach, which are complicated and not easily realized. Here, we employ a facile one-step, low-temperature, and effective method to synthesis urea-complexed SnO 2 ETL (referred as Urea-SnO 2 ). The –NH 2 groups on Urea-SnO 2 attributes to facilitate the charge transfer within the SnO 2 ETL and reduce trap state density in the perovskite film through the chemical interactions. Therefore, The PSCs based on the Urea-SnO 2 ETL exhibit a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.25%, which is more excellent than the devices based on the pristine SnO 2 ETL (17.60%). Functionalization of SnO 2 in situ by the precursor solution method offers an efficient method for high performance planar PSCs.

Assembling of Bi atoms on TiO2 nanorods boosts photoelectrochemical water splitting of semiconductors

Yajun Pang,Wenjie Zang,Zongkui Kou,Lei Zhang,Guangqing Xu,Jun Lv,Xiaorui Gao,Zhenghui Pan,John Wang,Yucheng Wu

Low photoconversion efficiency, high charge transfer resistance and fast recombination rate are the bottlenecks of semiconductor nanomaterials in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, where the introduction of an appropriate co-catalyst is an effective strategy to improve their performance. In the present study, we have purposely designed atomic-scale dispersed bismuth (Bi) assembled on titanium dioxide nanorods (TiO2), and demonstrated its effective role as a co-catalyst in enhancing the PEC water splitting performance of TiO2. As a result, functionalized Bi/TiO2 generates a high photocurrent intensity at 1.23 VRHE under simulated solar light irradiation, which is 4-fold higher than that of pristine TiO2, exhibiting a significantly improved PEC performance for water splitting. The strategy presented in this study opens a new window for the construction of non-precious metals dispersed at atomic scales as efficient co-catalysts for realizing sustainable solar energy-driven energy conversion and storage.

Large visible-light-driven photostriction in Bi(Ni2/3Nb1/3)O3–PbTiO3 ferroelectrics

Li Xiu,Chen Chen,Zhang Faqiang,Huang Xintang,Yi Zhiguo

Photostrictive effect that has been discovered for over half a century is getting renewed interest in recent years in view of the great potentials for optomechanical applications. Ferroelectric materials represented by lead lanthanum zirconated titanate have been widely studied in this field because of their relatively large photostriction and fast photoresponse, but their wide bandgaps with limit response to visible light hinder further practical application. Here, visible-light-driven photostrictions of the order of 10 −3 are discovered in Bi(Ni 2/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (BNNPT) ferroelectric solid solutions. Three BNNPT compositions with different phase structures, exhibiting notably different piezoelectric and photovoltaic properties, are selected to conduct the photostriction investigation, and their analogous photostrictive behaviors contradict with previous acknowledgment that the photostriction of ferroelectrics originates from the photovoltage-induced inverse piezoresponse. The nonuniform shifts of the XRD diffraction peaks under external laser illumination and the redshifts of the laser power dependent Raman modes disclose that the photostriction is mainly attributed to the light-induced distortion of BO 6 octahedra. This study sheds insight into the mechanism of the photostriction of ferroelectrics.

Facile synthesis of Bi NPs modified BiVO4/ZnFe2O4 heterojunction for PEC water splitting

Shouli Bai,Shiyu Jia,Sitong Yan,Yingying Zhao,Pinggui Tang,Ruixian Luo,Yongjun Feng,Dianqing Li,Aifan Chen

Solar energy is used as a driving force to create electron-hole pairs on the surface of electrodes, releasing hydrogen and oxygen through oxidative reductionism, which can directly generate clean energy by a lower resource and environmental costs. The novel ternary photoanode was successfully prepared by Bi nanoparticles modified on BiVO 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 heterojunction using simple and effective SILAR and impregnation reduction method. Based on the successful construction of heterostructure to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs, the addition of plasmonic nanoarchitectures can effectively capture photons and improve the water oxidation performance of semiconductors through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The ternary photoanode shows a significant improvement with bare BiVO 4 photoanode, its photocurrent density reachs 2.72 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which is 4.2 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 photoanode (0.65 mA cm −2 ). The IPCE and the ABPE are substantially increased by 2.7 times and 5 times higher than single component, respectively.

Electrospinning of Highly Bi-Oriented Flexible Piezoelectric Nanofibers for Anisotropic-Responsive Intelligent Sensing

Zhuzhu Shao,Xuan Zhang,Jingfeng Liu,Xingang Liu,Chuhong Zhang

Flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) have gained substantial attention owing to their wearability, breathability, and sustainable self-powered supply. However, existing film PEHs cannot identify forces in different bending directions, limiting their applications in wearable electronics and artificial intelligence. This study constructs a fabric PEH for the first time by introducing piezoelectric anisotropic BaTi 2 O 5 nanorods (BT2-nr) into piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers with a bi-oriented architecture, in which BT2-nr uniformly aligns in the PVDF nanofiber during electrospinning. The dual-orientation feature endows the flexible PEH with anisotropy, which can sensitively identify the forces at different bending directions (e.g., bent vertically, parallelly, or twisted by 45° along the fiber orientations). Simultaneously, the composite PVDF/BT2 PEH containing 15 wt.% BT2-nr delivers an optimal piezoelectric output of 31.2 V with a high sensitivity of 5.22 V N −1 . The developed anisotropic PEH can be used as a self-powered pressure sensor for multimodal intelligent biomonitoring of human movement. This study provides a feasible strategy for fabricating self-powered flexible PEHs with high electromechanical conversion efficiency and multifunctionality for wearable piezoelectric pressure sensors.

Construction of the novel PMA@Bi-MOF catalyst for effective fatty acid esterification

Qiuyun Zhang,Yanting Lei,Luyan Li,Jiao Lei,Mengmeng Hu,Taoli Deng,Yutao Zhang,Peihua Ma

A novel Bi-based metal-organic framework impregnated phosphomolybdic acid (PMA@Bi-MOF) catalyst has been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal procedure, and successfully applied in the preparation of biodiesel using oleic acid (OA) as the raw material. The PMA@Bi-MOF composites were exhaustively characterized with the help of FTIR , XRD, TPD-NH 3 , SEM-EDX, N 2 -physisorption, TGA , and XPS analyses. Experimental findings showed that the PMA@Bi-BTC exhibited a higher activity than that of PMA@Bi-BDC and Bi-BTC, attributed to its textural property, the presence of more acid sites with higher strength, and synergistic catalytic effects between PMA and Bi-BTC. The optimum conditions for esterification of OA, with a conversion of up to 92.5%, were found to be a molar ratio of methanol to OA of 20:1 and 0.15g PMA@Bi-BTC catalyst at 160 °C in 3 h. Meanwhile, reused studies indicated that the OA conversion reached more than 80% after seven reaction cycles. Furthermore, the activation energy of esterification catalyzed by PMA@Bi-BTC was also calculated as 54.8 kJ/mol. It is expected that our study provides an efficient route to biofuel production involving polyoxometalates/MOF synergistic catalysts.

Sequentially bridged MXene platelets for strong high-temperature EM-IR bi-stealth sheets

Yushan Yang,Kaicong Chen,Yipeng Chen,Chao Wang,Baokang Dang,Yingying Li,Ming Liu,Qingfeng Sun

Combination of flexible multifunctional stealth technology properties such as electromagnetic (EM) and infrared (IR) stealth is crucial to the development of aerospace, military, and electronic fields, but the synthesis technology still has a significant challenge. Herein, we have successfully designed and synthesized highly flexible MXene@cellulose lamellae/borate ion (MXCB) sheets with strong high-temperature EM-IR bi-stealth through sequential bridging of hydrogen and covalent bonds. The resultant MXCB sheets display high conductivity and good mechanical features such as flexibility, stretchability, fatigue resistance, and ultrasonic damage. MXCB sheets have a high tensile strength of 795 MPa. Furthermore, MXCB sheets with different thicknesses indicate exceptional high-temperature thermal-camouflage characteristics. This reduces the radiation temperature of the target object (>300°C) to 100°C. The conductivity of MXCB sheet with 3 μm thickness is 6108 S/cm and the EM interference (EMI) shielding value is 39.74 dB. The normalized surface-specific EMI SE absolute shielding effectiveness (SSE/ t ) is as high as 39312.78 dB·cm 2 /g, which remained 99.39% even after 10,000 times repeated folding. These multifunctional ultrathin MXCB sheets can be arranged by vacuum-assisted induction to develop EM-IR bi-stealth sheet.

Bi-Functionalized Transferrin@MoS2-PEG Nanosheets for Improving Cellular Uptake in HepG2 Cells

Si Xu,Shanshan Liang,Bing Wang,Jiali Wang,Meng Wang,Lingna Zheng,Hao Fang,Tingfeng Zhang,Yi Bi,Weiyue Feng

Pre-coating with a protein corona on the surface of nanomaterials (NMs) is an important strategy for reducing non-specific serum protein absorption while maintaining targeting specificity. Here, we present lipoic acid-terminated polyethylene glycol and transferrin bi-functionalized MoS2nanosheets ([email protected]2-PEG NSs) as a feasible approach to enhance cellular uptake.[email protected]2-PEG NSs can maintain good dispersion stability in cell culture medium and effectively protect MoS2NSs from oxidation in ambient aqueous conditions. Competitive adsorption experiments indicate that transferrin was more prone to bind MoS2NSs than bovine serum albumin (BSA). It is noteworthy that single HepG2 cell uptake of[email protected]2-PEG presented a heterogeneous distribution pattern, and the cellular uptake amount spanned a broader range (from 0.4 fg to 2.4 fg). Comparatively, the intracellular Mo masses in HepG2 cells treated with[email protected]2-PEG and MoS2-PEG showed narrower distribution, indicating homogeneous uptake in the single HepG2 cells. Over 5% of HepG2 cells presented uptake of the[email protected]2-PEG over 1.2 fg of Mo, about three-fold that of[email protected]2-PEG (0.4 fg of Mo). Overall, this work suggests that Tf coating enhances the cellular uptake of MoS2NSs and is a promising strategy for improving the intracellular uptake efficiency of cancer cells.Keywords:bi-functionalization;[email protected]2-PEG nanosheets;HepG2 cellular uptake

A New (De)Intercalation MXene/Bi Cathode for Ultrastable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery

Qiang Wang,Mengjie Wang,Li Wen,Wei Zeng,Binghui Ge,Chaofeng Zhang,Yang Yue,Siliang Wang

The emerging aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received extensive attention and research due to their unique advantages of low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the development of appropriate cathode materials to improve battery performance remains a major challenge. Herein, a new MXene and Bi (MXene/Bi) composite material is first applied as the (de)intercalation cathode of ZIB. The dispersed MXene nanosheets in the composite materials greatly improve the conductivity and hydrophilicity of the electrode, and prevent the stacking and the volume expansion in the charge/discharge process of 2D Bi fragments. The experimental results show that composite MXene/Bi electrode has remarkable capacity and ultralong life. Next, the good kinetics and (de)intercalation energy storage mechanism of ZIB are revealed through abundant electrochemical tests and ex situ characterization. The quasi-solid-state (QSS) ZIB is also constructed, showing superior electrochemical performance, flexibility, pressure resistance, and heat resistance. Besides, the QSS ZIB can be used directly as a self-powered pressure sensor to monitor the external pressure in real time based on the response current. This study not only demonstrates that MXene/Bi is a potential cathode for ZIBs, but also offers a feasible path to explore and design the next generation of high-performance multifunctional ZIBs.

Graphene-Encapsulated Nitrogen-doped Carbon@Bi Enables Rapid, Ultrahigh and Durable Sodium Storage

Meixue Wang,Huijun Li,Xiaoqin Cheng,Shizhen Tian,Xiaomin Wang

Graphical New bismuth anode material : As double encapsulated bismuth-based composite was investigated in a sodium half-cell, exhibiting good cycling stability and high discharge capacity. The introduction of nitrogen-doped carbon and graphene has resulted in a three-dimensional interconnected network structure, rich reaction sites and sites. This structure achieves a high degree of electrode reversibility and increases the electrical capacity. Bismuth (Bi) has promising applications as anode in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its suitable alloy voltage, unique lattice structure and high volumetric specific capacity. However, the severe structural degradation and poor cycling performance of Bi-anode during cycling limits its practical application. Here, we designed and synthesized graphene-encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon@bismuth (N−C@Bi/G) composites as anode materials for SIBs by a two-step hydrothermal and thermal treatment method to solve the above problems. The N−C@Bi/G composite anode material exhibits excellent sodium storage performance, high capacity (280 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and an initial coulombic efficiency of 78.87 %) and long-term cycling stability (260 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ). Electrochemical analysis and DFT calculations show that the fast reaction kinetics of N−C@Bi/G is directly related to the introduction of nitrogen-doped carbon enriching the pore structure and increasing the active sites. Meanwhile, through the aid of in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), the reaction mechanism and interphase evolution of N−C@Bi/G composite are revealed, which provides an important theoretical basis for the application of SIBs.

Porous Defective Bi/Bi3NbO7 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic NO Removal under Visible Light

Ting Gao,Jingqi Lin,Ke Zhang,Mohsen Padervand,Yifan Zhang,Wei Zhang,Menglin Shi,Chuanyi Wang

Since conventional techniques are ineffective for NO removal at low concentrations, photocatalysis has become attractive in this regard, recently. However, in practice, photocatalytic NO removal has drawbacks such as limited light absorption and the proclivity of producing toxic by-products. To address these issues, novel defective Bi/Bi3NbO7structures with good porosity were fabricated by a solvothermal method and used for enhanced photocatalytic NO removal under visible light irradiation. The morphological and structural properties of the prepared materials were comprehensively analyzed. The optimal photocatalytic activity of pore-defective Bi/Bi3NbO7for NO removal was 60.3%, when the molar ratios of urea and Bi(NO)3•5H2O to pristine Bi3NbO7were 1:25 and 1:2, respectively, under the following operational conditions: NO concentration of 700 ppb, catalyst dosage of 50 mg and irradiation time of 14 min. The induced defects and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi nanodots made remarkable contributions to improving the photocatalytic NO removal as well as inhibiting the toxic byproduct NO2. The photocatalytic NO removal pathway over the prepared photocatalysts was further mechanistically clarified taking advantage of EPR results and scavenging experiments. Considering the increased NO generation in the atmosphere, this work may provide novel insights for designing effective porous photocatalysts to treat gaseous toxic pollutants.Keywords:photocatalysis;Bi3NbO7;surface plasmon resonance;NO removal;defects
