Hydrothermal synthesis of Bi-Bi 3 TaO 7 heterostructures with mannitol • Morphological evolution from nanoflakes to nanoparticles • Enhanced visible absorption and charge separation by modulation of d-band center • Photocatalytic performance of nitrogen fixation up to 10 times that of pristine Bi 3 TaO 7 Morphology control can effectively regulate the interfacial electric field and electronic structure of photocatalytic materials, making it an important strategy for achieving efficient nitrogen fixation. In this study, a facile one-step hydrothermal method is used, with mannitol as both a reducing agent and morphology regulator, to in situ deposit metallic bismuth nanoparticles onto the surface of Bi₃TaO₇ (BTO), forming Bi-Bi₃TaO₇ (Bi-BTO) Schottky heterojunctions. The Bi-BTO samples consist of nanoparticles as compared to nanosheets for pure BTO, which not only increases the specific surface area and accessibility of catalytic active sites but also effectively regulates the interfacial contact of the Schottky heterojunction. This strengthens the built-in electric field and shifts the d-band center closer to the Fermi level. The optimized electronic structure enhances orbital coupling between the catalyst and nitrogen molecules, promoting nitrogen adsorption and activation and lowering the energy barrier for the formation of the rate-determining *NNH intermediate. Thanks to the synergistic effect of morphology engineering on the built-in electric field and d-band center, the optimal sample Bi-BTO-2 shows an excellent photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance even without a hole scavenger, achieving an ammonia generation rate of 195 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , 10 times that of pure BTO, with ammonia selectivity approaching 100%. This study highlights the key role of morphology engineering in regulating the interfacial properties and electronic structure of Schottky heterojunctions, providing a practical modification strategy for the design and engineering of high-performance photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation. Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are promising for many applications in non-destructive testing, bio-imaging, and modern agriculture. However, developing self-activated NIR phosphors with high efficiency and excellent thermal stability is a great challenge for current research. In this work, a self-activated far-red to NIR emitting NaLaMgWO 6 phosphor is prepared by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method, whose luminescence properties are investigated in detail. In addition, the introduction of Bi 3+ ions as sensitizers enhances the emission intensity of far-red to NIR light (650-850 nm) through a Bi 3+ → WO 6 6– energy transfer design strategy, resulting in an increased internal quantum efficiency (IQE) from 56.4% to 64.8% and thermal stability from 54% to 72% (420 K). Finally, the combination of NaLaMgWO 6 :Bi 3+ with 365/460 nm commercial LED chip is prepared into NIR pc-LED devices, demonstrating satisfactory performance in the field of night vision detection and other wide range of practical applications.

The widespread application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is hindered by anode dendrite formation and side reactions, reducing cycling life and performance. This study introduces Bi-Bi₂O₃-loaded carbon nanofibers (Bi-Bi₂O₃@CNF) with hierarchical hollow structures and surface grooves fabricated via electrospinning, thermal treatment, and in situ growth. Experimental characterization and density functional theory reveal that the high surface area and fibrous network of Bi-Bi₂O₃@CNF enhance electron transport and electrolyte distribution, effectively reducing ohmic resistance and concentration polarization. This “Spatial Effect” provides ample space for uniform Zn deposition. Additionally, the in situ-grown Bi-Bi₂O₃, pyridinic nitrogen, pyrrolic nitrogen, and C─O─Bi bonds induce strong zinc affinity and electronegativity, generating an “Electrostatic Confinement Effect” that amplifies the “spatial effect” into a “Dual-Confinement Effect.” This synergy ensures uniform Zn deposition, suppresses dendrites and side reactions, and mitigates polarization. Compared to pure Zn anodes, Bi-Bi₂O₃@CNF reduces polarization overpotential by 17.6%, increases hydrogen evolution overpotential by 11.52%, and maintains a Coulombic efficiency of 98.8% for over 200 h. In full cells, Zn@Bi-Bi₂O₃@CNF//MnO₂ achieves 73.0% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g⁻¹. This work provides a promising strategy for high-efficiency, durable, and safe AZIBs and offers valuable insights into the design of advanced aqueous energy storage materials.

MOF-derived catalyst of Bi 1 -TiO 2 was designed for the carbonylation of amines. • Bi 1 -TiO 2 achieved a high space yield of 833 mmol·g cat -1 ·h −1 with 99% selectivity. • Atomic Bi promoted L-acid density to 256 μmol/g cat that benefits carbonylation. • Intermediate DPU activated on Bi 3+ with selective anti-bonding orbits population. The synthesis of N-substituted carbamates through the carbonylation of amines with alkyl carbamates represents a green and promising route, yet it is hindered by insufficient catalytic efficiency and a lack of mechanistic understanding. In this work, a single-atom Bi-doped TiO 2 (Bi 1 -TiO 2 ) catalyst was synthesized using MIL-125(Ti) as the precursor for the carbonylation of amines with ethyl carbamate (EC). The optimized 5% Bi 1 -TiO 2 catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving a high space–time yield of ethyl propyl carbamate (EPC) at 833 mmol·g cat ⁻ 1 ·h⁻ 1 with 99% selectivity, surpassing most reported catalysts. Mechanistic studies revealed that the 5% Bi 1 -doped TiO 2 possessed a high density of Lewis acid sites of 256 μmol/g cat . Dipropylurea (DPU) was identified as the key reaction intermediate. Both DPU and ethanol were preferentially activated on the Lewis acidic Bi δ+ sites. Further evidence indicated that electrons were populated into the anti-bonding orbitals of DPU from Bi, leading to significant activation of the N-(C=O) bond. This activation dramatically enhanced the carbonylation process by facilitating the alcoholysis of DPU. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability for over 250 h and substrate universality across a range of amines for the synthesis of various N-substituted carbamates. Electrochemical CO 2 conversion into valuable products provides a promising solution for achieving a carbon-neutral energy cycle. Herein, an active and stable Bi/Nafion interface is fabricated over Bi nanosheets with the modification of Nafion, which exhibits superior CO 2 conversion with formate selectivity of above 95% in a wide potential range, partial current density of 72.12 mA cm −2 at − 1.07 V vs. RHE in H-type cell. The extraordinary CO 2 reduction performance could be ascribed to a high CO 2 permeability and enhanced local proton activity at the Bi/Nafion interface, which leads to promoted CO 2 adsorption and feasible proton-coupled electron transfer during the CO 2 reduction process. Computational investigations reveal the modification of Nafion offers a comfortable platform to enable the key intermediate *OCHO to be stable. This work offers a valuable insight into interfacial manipulation of electrodes to convert CO 2 to valuable products.

Producing polyethylene (PE) with broad or bimodal molecular weight distribution (MWD) in one reactor using bimetallic catalysis is a cost- and energy-effective technique in the polyolefin industry. However, this technique is still faced with great challenges, including the difficulty in molecular weight (MW) regulation and poisonous effect commonly observed between the two metals resulting from strong interactions. In this work, a series of bimetallic catalysts CpCr/imidoV/silica with different Cr/V molar ratios were fabricated by anchoring Cp 2 Cr onto imidoV/silica, and the two mono-metallic catalysts CpCr/silica and imidoV/silica were also prepared for comparison. The results show that not only the activity but also the responses to alkyl-Al cocatalyst, polymerization temperature, and hydrogen were distinct between CpCr/silica and imidoV/silica. The interactions between Cr and V sites seemed to be weak. As a result, their different catalytic behaviors were generally reserved, thus making it possible to regulate the activity and the MW of PE products by adjusting Cr/V molar ratio. Thanks to the distinct hydrogen responses of Cr and V on bimetallic catalysts, bi- or broad-modal PE was successfully synthesized by hydrogen regulation. The relative content of low and high MW fractions could be adjusted by altering both the Cr/V molar ratio and hydrogen partial pressure.

The photocatalytic removal of nitric oxide (NO) is a promising technology used to reduce the level of harmful gaseous pollutants in parts per billion (ppb). As a potential photocatalyst, Bi2Sn2O7has a low quantum efficiency due to its fast recombination rate of photo-generated carriers. In this paper, Bi/Bi2Sn2O7was prepared by the in situ deposition of Bi. The structural, electrical, and optical properties of the attained sample were investigated through a series of analyses. The results demonstrate that Bi nanoparticles not only enhance the photoabsorption ability of Bi2Sn2O7due to their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, but also improve its photocatalytic activity. Photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the oxidation of NO at ppb level under xenon lamp (λ > 400 nm) irradiation. It was found that the photocatalytic NO removal rate increased from 7.2% (Bi2Sn2O7) to 38.6% (Bi/Bi2Sn2O7). The loading of Bi promotes the separation and migration of photo-generated carriers and enhances the generation of •O2−and •OH radicals responsible for the oxidation of NO. The Bi/Bi2Sn2O7composite photocatalyst also exhibits excellent photocatalytic stability, which makes it a potential candidate for use in air purification systems.

The mechanochemical reaction of C60 and Bi(NO3)3·5H2O was performed under ball-milling condition. The product was well characterized by spectroscopic methods such as IR, Raman, UV-vis, 13C NMR, as well as elemental analysis method. The spectroscopic investigation indicates that some hydroxyl and nitro groups are attached to the C60 and no profound structural changes occur for the C60 cage in the product. The elemental analysis gives an average composition of C60(NO2)2(OH)21 for the product. A possible mechanism is suggested for the reaction.

Recent development of precise nanomedicine has aroused an overwhelming interest in integration of diagnosis and treatment for cancers. Designing renal-clearable and targeting nanoparticles (NPs) has specific cancer theranostic implications and remains a challenging task. In this work, the ultrasmall folic acid (FA) and bovine serum albumin-modified Bi–Bi2S3 heterostructure nanoparticles NPs (Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs) with excellent computed tomography (CT) and photoacoustic imaging abilities and outstanding photothermal performances were synthesized in an aqueous phase route via a simple method. Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs have the following criteria: (i) Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs with heterostructure possess better stability than Bi NPs and higher Bi content than Bi2S3 NPs, which are conducive to the enhancement of CT imaging effect; (ii) Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs with FA molecules on the surface could target the tumor site effectively; (iii) Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs could inhibit tumor growth effectively under 808 nm laser irradiation; (iv) ultrasmall Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs could be cleared through kidney and liver within a reasonable time, avoiding a long-term retention/toxicity. Therefore, the renal clearable Bi–Bi2S3/BSA&FA NPs are a promising agent for targeting cancer theranostics.

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to valuable formate as liquid fuel is a promising way to alleviate the greenhouse effect. The edge active sites in bismuth (Bi) nanosheets play a critical role in the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 into formate, which enable the operation of CO 2 reduction with high cathodic energy efficiency, especially under large current densities of ≥ 200 mA/cm 2 . However, the undesirable reconstruction of small Bi nanosheets into large nanosheets leads to the decreasing of edge active sites during electrocatalysis. Here we report stable isolated ultrasmall bismuth nanosheets-synthesized by in-situ electrochemical transformation of ligands covered bismuth vanadate-on silver nanowires as an efficient electrocatalyst for CO 2 -to-formate reduction. The cooperative electrocatalyst achieves a formate current density of 186 mA/cm 2 and a cathodic energy efficiency of 75% for formate, which is the only best compared to the literature results. Operando Raman and morphologic measurements demonstrate that the excellent energy utilization of the electrocatalyst is originated from the rich edge active sites with Bi-O species of the ultrasmall Bi nanosheets.

Objective: Osteochondral defect presents a big challenge for clinical treatment. This study aimed at constructing a bi-layered composite chitosan/chitosan-β-tricalcium phosphate (CS/CS-β-TCP) scaffold and at repairing the rat osteochondral defect.Approach: The bi-layered CS/CS-β-TCP scaffold was fabricated by lyophilization, and its microstructure was observed by a scanning electron microscope. Chondrocytes and bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) were seeded into the CS layer and the CS-β-TCP layer, respectively. Viability and proliferation ability of the cells were observed under a confocal microscope. After subcutaneous implantation, the chondrogenic ability of the CS layer and osteogenic ability of the CS-β-TCP layer were evaluated by immunofluorescence. Then, the bi-layered scaffolds were implanted into the rat osteochondral defects and the harvested samples were macroscopically and histologically evaluated. Results: The bi-layered CS/CS-β-TCP scaffold exhibited the distinctive microstructures for each layer. The seeded chondrocytes in the CS layer could maintain the chondrogenic lineage, whereas BMSCs in the CS-β-TCP layer could continually differentiate into the osteogenic lineage. Moreover, cells in both layers could maintain well viability and excellent proliferation ability. For the in vivo study, the newly formed tissues in the bi-layered scaffolds group were similar with the native osteochondral tissues, which comprised hyaline-like cartilage and subchondral bone, with better repair effects compared with those of the pure CS group and the blank control group.Innovation: This is the first time that the bi-layered composite CS/CS-β-TCP scaffold has been fabricated and evaluated with respect to osteochondral defect repair. Conclusion: The bi-layered CS/CS-β-TCP scaffolds could facilitate osteochondral defect repair and might be the promising candidates for osteochondral tissue engineering.

The guided bone regeneration (GBR) concept has been extensively utilized to treat maxillofacial bone defects in clinical practice. However, the repair efficacy of currently available GBR membranes is often compromised by their limited bone regeneration potential and deficient antibacterial activity . In this study, inspired by the bi-layered structure design of the commonly used Bio-Gide Ⓡ membrane, we designed and fabricated a new kind of multifunctional bi-layered “GBR scaffold” combining solution electrospinning writing (SEW) and solution electrospinning (SES) techniques using a single SEW printer. Copper-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles ( [email protected] ) were incorporated into the poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/gelatin (PLGA/Gel, denoted as PG) fiber matrix to construct a composite [email protected] fibrous scaffold. The obtained GBR scaffold consisted of a loose and porous SEW layer to support and facilitate bone ingrowth, and a dense and compact SES layer to resist non-osteoblast interference. The resulting enhanced mechanical properties, coordinated degradation profile, and facile preparation procedure imparted the composite scaffold with good clinical feasibility. In vitro biological experiments indicate that the [email protected] composite scaffold exhibited favorable osteogenic and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, an in vivo rat periodontal defect model further confirmed the promising bone regeneration efficacy of the [email protected] scaffold. In conclusion, the developed electrowritten [email protected] bi-layered scaffold with hierarchical architecture and concurrent osteogenic and antibacterial functions may hold great potential for application in GBR.
