At present, the visible light (Vis) catalytic oxidation, as a wastewater treatment approach without secondary pollution, has captured the interest of many researchers. However, the efficiency of visible photocatalysis still needs to be continuously improved. In this study, a piezoelectric photocatalyst Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) responding to both Vis and ultrasound (US) was prepared, characterized, and employed to treat Rhodamine B (RhB) in water. The removal efficiencies of RhB under different systems (Vis/BWO, US/BWO, (Vis + US)/BWO) were investigated and the reuse capacity of BWO were examined. Moreover, the piezoelectric photocatalytic mechanism of (Vis + US)/BWO system on RhB removal was analyzed. The results exhibited that the prepared Bi 2 WO 6 possessed excellent photoresponsive and piezoresponsive properties, and the removal and mineralization of RhB could reach 100% and 77.2% within 60 min, respectively. Under the combined effect of photocatalysis and piezoelectricity, the superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and photogenerated holes produced, which were responsible for the degradation of RhB in (Vis + US)/BWO system. Photocatalytic degradation stands as an effective remedy to solve the global environmental pollution caused by organic pollutants. In this study, we synthesized a NiFe layered double hydroxide/Bi 2 WO 6 (NF-LDH/BWO) Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction. The attachment of NF-LDH particles on flower-like BWO increased the active sites and the interface area between two pure materials. The construction of LDH/BWO heterojunction endowed with improved light absorption capacity and boosted separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Consequently, compared with BWO and NF-LDH, the NF-LDH/BWO composites showed enhanced photoactivities. At NF-LDH mass ratio of 10%, the optimal degradation rate of ciprofloxacin (75.9%) within 60 min under visible illumination was achieved, 1.43- and 9.37-fold those of BWO and NF-LDH, respectively. In addition, the NF-LDH/BWO composite also demonstrated excellent cyclic stability. The S-scheme mechanism was proposed based on both experimental and density functional calculation results.

Improving the transmission and separation efficiency of light carriers is considered an effective method to enhance the catalytic performance of semiconductor photocatalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis and application of g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 heterostructure nanosheets for the photocatalytic coupling of thiols to disulfides under visible light irradiation. The heterojunction exhibits significant photocatalytic performance compared to the bare catalyst, which dramatically enhances the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers due to the remarkable hole-trapping ability of g-C3N4. Various functional symmetrical and asymmetrical disulfides have been effectively prepared by employing this heterostructure photocatalytic system, which features excellent photocatalytic activity and cycling stability. The outstanding photocatalytic activity of the semiconductor heterojunction catalyst provides an economical, sustainable, and thus green process for producing disulfides.

The suppression of expeditious complexation of photoexcited carriers and the enhancement of light harvesting are two extraordinarily momentous elements for boosting the catalytic activity of synthesized semiconductor photocatalyst. Herein, a sequence of visible-light-induced self-assembled flower-like spherical Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr S-scheme heterojunctions were successfully fabricated by two-step solvothermal process. The fabricated Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr hybrids possessed the splendid capacity to catalyze the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in water without the addition of surfactant compared to monocomponent photocatalyst. The optimized Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr (FBBH-16) possessed the most prominent photocatalytic activity, acquiring a conspicuous degradation efficiency of 91.97 % ± 1.51 % for BPA after 60 min illumination. The rate constant k (0.04078 ± 0.0009985 min −1 ) of FBBH-16, which was approximately 4.0 and 3.5 times that of bare Bi 2 WO 6 and BiOBr, respectively. Such strengthening mechanism was chiefly ascribed to the establishment of S-scheme heterojunction, which efficaciously impeded the complexation of photoexcited charge pairs and noteworthily heightened the light harvesting. Furthermore, the forceful interfacial interactions between Bi 2 WO 6 and BiOBr afforded much more active sites for BPA removal. The quenching experiments confirmed that ·OH and ·O 2− are the principal active species for BPA degradation over Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr hybrids. Ultimately, two possible photodegradation pathways of BPA over Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr heterojunctions are also come up with on the grounds of the identification of intermediate products. This work furnishes fresh insights into the fabrication of highly efficacious and stable bismuth-based S-scheme heterojunctions for treating the actual wastewater by integrating nanostructure and microscopic morphology.

Photocatalysis technology has been considered a green and efficient method to control tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) pollution in potable water sources. In this paper, Bi 2 WO 6 -loaded photocatalysts on nitrogen-defective C 3 N 4 (BWO@ND-C 3 N 4 ) were constructed to synergistically promote the degradation of TCH under visible light by activating periodate (PI). TCH (20 mg/L) could be 100 % photo-degraded by BWO@ND-C 3 N 4 (0.25 g/L) within 30 min when PI concentration is 1 mM. The BWO@ND-C 3 N 4 /activated PI system can also complete total TCH degradation when applied to actual water bodies and sunlight particularly (40 min for sunny days and 60 min for cloudy days). Besides, the system displayed good recycling stability under visible light, maintaining 90 % TCH degradation efficiency after 6 cycles. The degradation mechanism research showed that ·IO 3 , h + , ·OH, ·O 2 – and 1 O 2 are the main active substances in the degradation process. The superior TCH degradation performances of BWO@ND-C 3 N 4 can be ascribed to the interfacial C-O bonds and the stable built-in electric field between BWO and ND-C 3 N 4 for the fast separation of photogenerated carriers and activating PI, which can facilitate the rapid electron transfer, enhancing the TCH degradation kinetics. This work provides a broad application prospect of photocatalyst/activated PI systems for antibiotic pollution treatment in water.

CO 2 photoreduction into high-value-added C 2+ products struggles with energetic challenges in forming critical intermediates and multiple C−C bonds. Herein, an effectively synthesized photocatalyst , Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies anchoring Au and Cu dual single atoms on the surface, can convert CO 2 and H 2 O vapour into C 3 H 6 and C 2 H 4 . The high product selectivity of 18.2 % for C 3 H 6 and 65.4 % for total C 2+ hydrocarbons are achieved under concentrated light irradiation (2.4 W·cm −2 ). Au-Cu dual-single-atom sites and defect engineering strategies exhibit synergistic effects on optimizing the reaction thermodynamics and charge kinetics for CO 2 conversion. Theoretical calculations provide reference values for reaction pathways of C 3 H 6 and C 2 H 4 formation, with the C−C couplings being potential determining steps of multicarbon product formation. Our work offers a promising strategy with a combination of concentrated light irradiation technology and catalyst modification to achieve high selectivity of C 2+ products.

The complete mineralization of aromatic VOCs via photocatalysis remains a grand challenge, limited by severe photogenerated carrier recombination and the easy formation of toxic refractory phenolic intermediates. Here, we demonstrate a solvent-mediated crystal facet engineering strategy to construct a Bi 2 WO 6 -BiOCl S-scheme heterojunction with oriented exposure of high-activity facets and abundant surface hydroxyl sites. The facet-tailored heterojunction achieves efficient spatial separation of photogenerated carriers via a strong built-in electric field, while retaining the strong redox capacity to generate abundant reactive oxygen species. The optimal catalyst delivers over 95% gaseous toluene removal and 94.9% mineralization efficiency within 1 h irradiation, with 99.7% of removed toluene converted to CO 2 , exceeding the aqueous-synthesized control, pure-phase counterparts, and most reported bismuth-based photocatalysts. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations reveals that facet-induced surface hydroxyl sites act as specific adsorption and activation centers for toluene molecules, steering the degradation toward a benign benzyl alcohol-benzaldehyde-benzoic acid pathway and inhibiting the generation of toxic phenolic byproducts. This work clarifies the critical role of crystal facet engineering in coordinating heterojunction charge transfer and surface reaction pathway modulation, providing a new avenue for designing high-performance photocatalysts for the complete mineralization of aromatic VOCs.

Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction to ammonia intrinsically
relies
on the synergistic activation of both N 2 and H 2 O molecules by the catalyst. However, achieving simultaneous and
efficient activation of these two species on a single catalyst surface
remains a formidable challenge, constrained by poor N 2 adsorption
and the high dissociation energy barrier of the N≡N triple
bond. To address this, a vacancy engineering strategy was adopted
to design and fabricate a Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst
featuring both bismuth and oxygen dual vacancies (V Bi+O -BWO). The oxygen vacancies trap photogenerated electrons for N 2 activation, while bismuth vacancies enhance H 2 O adsorption and facilitate proton generation. Through this synergistic
effect, the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance was significantly
enhanced. Experimental results show that V Bi+O -BWO achieves
an ammonia production rate of 113.14 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 , a 4.9-fold enhancement over the unmodified
catalyst. N 2 -TPD results demonstrate that the dual vacancies
effectively enhance N 2 chemisorption, facilitating subsequent
activation. In situ FTIR confirms that N 2 adsorbs and converts
on Bi 2 WO 6 via a distal pathway. This study provides
new insights into the development of high-efficiency dual-vacancy
photocatalytic materials.

A g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 WO 6 ternary heterojunction was constructed via simple mechanical grinding and thermal treatment. • GBMW follows a dual Z -scheme charge-transfer pathway, preserving strong redox capability for enhanced photocatalysis. • U(VI) acts as an electron acceptor to promote charge separation and improve photocatalytic performance. Due to the difficulty of conventional photocatalytic systems in simultaneously achieving strong oxidation and reduction processes, the treatment of wastewater containing coexisting uranium and organic pollutants remains a critical challenge in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, a novel g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 WO 6 (GBMW) ternary photocatalyst with a dual Z -scheme heterojunction architecture was rationally constructed for the removal of U(VI) and tetracycline (TC) under visible-light irradiation. The dual Z-scheme heterojunction extends the visible-light response range and accelerates interfacial charge transfer, while preserving strong redox potentials. Within 100 min, GBMW achieves a U(VI) reduction efficiency of 91.6% and a TC degradation efficiency of 97.6%, with corresponding k obs values of 0.02332 and 0.03664 min −1 , respectively, which are significantly superior to those of BiMO, BiWO, GCN and GBW. Notably, U(VI) can act as an efficient electron acceptor to promote the separation of electrons and holes in GBMW, which significantly facilitates the degradation of TC. Moreover, GBMW demonstrates excellent stability and anti-interference performance in various real water matrices. This work not only provides a feasible strategy for constructing high-efficiency dual Z -scheme heterojunctions photocatalysts, but also offers an effective solution for treating complex wastewater containing coexisting organic pollutants and radioactive contaminants. Tetracycline (TC) pollution in water bodies has posed a persistent threat to ecological security and human health. Pure bismuth tungstate (BWO) suffers from low carrier separation efficiency, narrow light response range, and insufficient active sites in water pollutant treatment, which severely restricts its photocatalytic application. This work proposes a novel dual-synergistic strategy of oxygen vacancy defects and tourmaline spontaneous surface electric field, and constructs tourmaline/oxygen vacancy-rich Bi 2 WO 6 (T/OvBWO) Schottky heterojunctions via a one-step ethylene glycol solvothermal method. The as-prepared T/3OvBWO features a hierarchical nanoparticles-on-rod structure, retains the pristine crystal structure of BWO without inducing impurity phases after the introduction of oxygen vacancies and tourmaline, and exhibits enhanced visible-light absorption and surface area relative to BWO. Under visible-light irradiation, the optimized 40 % T/3OvBWO achieves a TC removal efficiency of 88.2 % within 60 min, with an apparent with apparent rate constants 2.5 and 2.6 times those of pure BWO and T, respectively. The synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and tourmaline surface electric field significantly accelerates charge separation and suppresses carrier recombination. Meanwhile, the catalyst exhibits strong adaptability in a pH range of 3–11, and remains over 80 % TC removal efficiency after 4 cycles with no obvious structural damage or ion leaching. This work provides a green, low-cost strategy for constructing high-performance BWO-based photocatalysts, which exhibits promising application potential in antibiotic wastewater treatment.

In situ growth of ZnCo MOF on 3D-flower like Bi 2 WO 6 is developed for enhancing photocatalytic degradation. • The novel flower-like structure the surface-grown MOF achieved a 99.1% degradation of rhodamine B within 1 h. • The structure causes narrowed the band gap and synergistic charge separation for almost complete photodegradation. Herein, a novel 3D flower-like ZnCo MOF-modified Bi 2 WO 6 is first fabricated via a simple solvothermal approach and applied for complete rhodamine B (RhB) photocatalytic degradation. First, granular flower-shaped BWO and cubic MOF are synthesized. The crystal structure, microscopic morphology, and surface element distribution of these materials are characterized, and their photocatalytic degradation performance toward RhB is evaluated. To clarify the feasibility of modifying the optical catalytic performance of BWO by MOF, a synergistic BWO-MOF composite photocatalyst was prepared, and an extremely high efficiency of 99.1% in the degradation of Rhodamine B within 1 h is achieved. The growing prevalence of antibiotic residues in aquatic environments, particularly recalcitrant antibiotics like tetracycline (TC), poses significant ecological risks. In this study, a novel Bi 2 WO 6 /Mo-doped BiVO 4 /NH 2 -UiO-66 (BBU) ternary heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method to enhance visible-light-driven TC degradation through component synergy. Systematic characterization revealed that Mo doping induced lattice distortion in BiVO 4 , while the incorporation of NH 2 -UiO-66 drastically increased the specific surface area from 23.647 to 398.804 m 2 ·g −1 , providing abundant active sites. Photoluminescence (PL) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analyses demonstrated that the optimized BBU-3 sample exhibited the lowest charge carrier recombination rate. Under visible light irradiation for 80 min, BBU-3 achieved 95.2% degradation of TC, with reaction kinetics 8.61, 15.76, and 5.01 times higher than those of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 , BiVO 4 , and binary heterojunctions, respectively. Degradation-trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements indicate that h + , 1 O 2 and ·O 2 - are the primary reactive species, suggesting that this system is a synergistic radical-non-radical degradation system. Additionally, possible degradation pathways and intermediate toxicity were evaluated. This work offers a promising strategy for designing efficient bismuth-based MOF heterojunctions for antibiotic remediation in water.
