Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a versatile green oxidant with wide-ranging applications. In this study, a bismuth ion (Bi 3+ )-gradient-doped indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 ) photocatalyst with abundant sulfur vacancies (V s ) was successfully prepared via a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted hydrothermal method combined with solid-state grinding. The synergy of Bi 3+ doping and V s narrows the bandgap and constructs a built-in electric field for directional carrier transport, enabling the catalyst to achieve a H 2 O 2 production rate of 784.35 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). This work establishes a novel paradigm for designing high-performance sulfide photocatalysts.

Without using any organic additive, zircon-type (space group I 4 1 / amd ) (Lu 1− x Sc x ) 0.99 VO 4 :0.01Bi 3+ ( x = 0−1, 0.1 interval) nano/microcrystals were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction at 180°C for 24 h. The products were systematically characterized via XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, elemental mapping, and optical spectroscopy to investigate the effects of Sc 3+ doping on crystal structure, morphology, and luminescent properties. It was found that with the substitution of Lu 3+ by Sc 3+ , the products gradually transformed from LuVO 4 :Bi 3+ nanocrystals into highly anisotropic ScVO 4 :Bi 3+ microrods preferentially growing up along the [001] direction. The peak wavelength of both excitation and emission almost linearly increased with decreasing cell volume, accompanied by band broadening, which was rationalized by considering crystal field splitting energy ( D q), character of the chemical bond (nephelauxetic effect) and metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) energy. This finely tunable broadband emission (center wavelength 581−639 nm, FWHM >175 nm) enables the materials to supplement multicolor components, presenting potential for application in phosphor-converted white light-emitting diode (pc-WLED) and others.

Bi 3+ /K + co-doping act as “dual pillars” to stabilize the layered structure. • Intercalated Bi 3+ increase the KTO interlayer spacing and stabilize the lattice. • Initial coulombic efficiency of Bi-KTO far exceeds that of other Ti-based materials. • K + /Bi 3+ synergy enhances potassium storage and cycling stability. Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are increasingly recognized as an important candidate for next-generation energy storage technology attributed to the advantages of sufficient potassium reserves, suitable redox potential, and environmental friendliness. The research of high-performance anode materials represents an essential factor in the development of PIBs. Among these, titanium (Ti)-based materials, known for their structural stability and environmental friendliness, face challenges including limited capacity and slow kinetics. To address these issues, in this work, we propose a synergistic “dual pillars” strategy that incorporates K + pre-intercalation and Bi 3+ doping into Ti-based materials, thereby enhancing their potassium storage performance. K + stabilizes the layered framework, while Bi 3+ further expands the interlayer spacing and optimizes the electronic structure, significantly improving both structural stability and ion diffusion kinetics. The Bi-KTO has a capacity reaching 106.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and maintains 63 mAh g −1 after over 1500 cycles under 0.2 A g −1 . In particular, the initial coulombic efficiency of Bi-KTO is relatively high compared with other reported KTO-based anodes. At 0.2 A g −1 , the full cell retained 32.5 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles, surpassing most reported KTO-based anode for PIBs. These findings provide valuable insights for future in-depth investigations about KTO-based materials. Download: Download high-res image (340KB) Download: Download full-size image

Highly efficient cyan-emitting phosphor materials are indispensable for closing the cyan gap in spectra of the traditional phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) to achieve high-quality full-spectrum white lighting. In this work, bright cyan-emitting Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 (CGO):0.02Bi 3+ ,0.07Zn 2+ phosphor is developed to bridge the cyan gap. Such a Bi 3+ ,Zn 2+ codoping enhances the cyan emission of CGO:0.02Bi 3+ by 4.1 times due to the influence of morphology and size of phosphor particles, charge compensation and lattice distortion. Interestingly, codoping La 3+ ions into the current system can achieve a photoluminescence tuning of CGO:0.02Bi 3+ from cyan to yellowish-green by crystallographic site engineering. Besides, Bi 3+ –Eu 3+ energy transfer is successfully realized in CGO:0.02Bi 3+ ,0.07Zn 2+ , n Eu 3+ phosphors and the emission color tuning from cyan to orange is observed. The investigation of thermal quenching behaviors reveals that the incorporation of Zn 2+ and La 3+ improves the thermal stability of CGO:0.02Bi 3+ . Finally, CGO:0.02Bi 3+ ,0.07Zn 2+ ,0.10Eu 3+ phosphor is employed to obtain a single-phased warm WLED device. A full-spectrum WLED device with remarkable color rendering index (Ra) of 97.4 and high luminous efficiency of 69.72 lm W −1 is generated by utilizing CGO:0.02Bi 3+ ,0.07Zn 2+ phosphor. This result suggests the important effect of CGO:0.02Bi 3+ ,0.07Zn 2+ phosphor on closing the cyan gap, providing new insights of cyan-emitting phosphors applied in full-spectrum white lighting.

In this article we synthesized a series of phosphors K2MgGeO4:Bi3+ with high brightness for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) conversion and investigated their crystal structures and luminescence properties using powder X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectra, and absolute quantum efficiency. K2MgGeO4:Bi3+ phosphor exhibits intense absorption in near-UV area and presents a broad asymmetric emission band with the main peak located at 614 nm, which was ascribed to the 3P1 → 1S0 transition of Bi3+. The absolute quantum efficiency of the K2MgGeO4:0.01Bi3+ phosphor was measured to be 66.6%. Also, this orange emission with color chromaticity coordinates of (0.4989, 0.4400) has an excellent resistance to thermal quenching: its integrated intensity at 393 K still maintained ∼85% of the one at room temperature. The WLEDs devices with Ra = 93.8 were fabricated by employing K2MgGeO4:0.01Bi3+ as an orange phosphor, which contains abundant red light component in its emission spectrum. The excellent luminescent performance of K2MgGeO4:0.01Bi3+ suggests that it is a promising orange-emitting phosphor for near-ultraviolet WLEDs.

Discovering multifunctional luminescent materials to meet the demands of modern spectroscopy is of great significance. However, it is a standing challenge to enable multiple luminescence properties in a single material system via single metal ion doping. Here, we report the inherently Bi3+/Bi2+ codoped Ca3Ga2Ge3O12 persistent phosphor where Bi3+ is in situ reduced to Bi2+. This phosphor can act as an efficient multimodal luminescence material, which simultaneously exhibits long-lasting (>12 h) ultraviolet-B (UVB) and near-infrared (NIR) dual-band persistent luminescence after irradiation by 254 nm ultraviolet (UV) light. UVB and NIR afterglow are ascribed to the distinct Bi3+ and Bi2+ emitters, respectively, proven by comprehensive spectroscopic investigations including X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Besides, this phosphor also exhibits exceptional photochromic features, accompanied by a rapid body color transformation from white to brown in response to 254 nm UV light within 60 s and excellent recovery capacity upon thermal or blue/white light stimulation. The combination of UVB persistent luminescence of Bi3+ and NIR afterglow of Bi2+ coupled with reversible white-to-brown photochromism phenomenon offers one type of promising multifunctional luminescence material, showing potential to be used for optical storage and anti-counterfeiting applications.

The development of efficient, tunable excitation/emission and sustainable luminescence mode single-phase inorganic luminescent materials plays an important role in the progress of information encryption and advanced anti-counterfeiting technology. Herein, a general high temperature solid phase method was employed to synthesize Bi 3+ and Eu 2+ co-doped BaZrSi 3 O 9 (BZSO) phosphors, which show properties of spectral tuning and temperature sensitivity and have potential applications in lighting and anti-counterfeiting. The optimized cyan-emitting phosphor BZSO:0.03Bi 3+ ,0.05Eu 2+ phosphor in w-LED devices to significantly improves the color rendering index (CRI) from 89 to 93, while the correlated color temperature (CCT) is reduced from 5002 K to 4609 K. By substitution of Bi 3+ with varying concentrations of Eu 2+ in BZSO, the luminescent color of the hosts can be tuned from yellow to green. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of BZSO:0.03Bi 3+ ,0.05Eu 2+ sample varies with the excitation wavelength (270 to 420 nm). The prepared powder was mixed with soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare advanced anti-counterfeiting ink. The prepared of BZSO:0.03Bi 3+ ,0.05Eu 2+ /PVA composite luminescent film not only has good thermal stability, water resistance, transparency, flexibility, foldability and easy processing performance, but also has the characteristics of adjustable multi-mode luminescence and sustainable luminescence. In short, this changing-color and long-lasting luminescent fluorescent material offers the possibility of sophisticated advanced anti-counterfeiting applications in the future.

Photochromic materials integrating multi-band excitation and multi-type fluorescence exhibit remarkable advantages in information storage, anti-counterfeiting, X-ray imaging, and beyond. However, the number of such materials remains limited due to the lack of development strategies. Herein, a lanthanide oxide, SrGd 2 O 4 is employed, characterized by a low-dimensional tubular crystal structure as the matrix, which facilitates the generation of abundant defects and efficient X-ray absorption. By introducing Bi 3+ ions featuring broadband absorption, strong fluorescence, and easy valence change, the coloration-inducing wavelengths are extended from 254 nm and X-ray to 365 nm and blue light. The photochromic response is fully reversible, with the colored state efficiently erased by white light irradiation or thermal stimuli. Notably, two distinct photochromic mechanisms are identified: oxygen vacancy-related color centers and an absorption band arising from valence variation of Bi 3+ ions. Additionally, SrGd 2 O 4 : Bi 3+ displays blue photoluminescence and high-temperature afterglow under 254 nm/X-ray excitation. These combined properties enable the material to achieve advanced applications in bright-and-dark-field X-ray imaging, daylight-activated optical anti-counterfeiting, and rewritable information storage systems.

In this study, a blue fluorescent material Sr3Y(BO3)3:Bi3+ was synthesized by the high temperature solid-state reaction method. The corresponding structural characteristics, concentration and temperature dependent luminescence characteristics of Sr3Y(BO3)3:Bi3+ and the LED device performances were systematically studied. At different excitation wavelengths in the range of 340–375 nm, the photoluminescence (PL) region can be adjusted from green (CIE: (0.2524, 0.4063); Peak: 511 nm) to blue (CIE: (0.1936, 0.1236); Peak: 415 nm). The best excitation peaked at ∼370 nm, which well matches with the emission of a commercial near-ultraviolet (NUV) light-emitting diode (LED) chip. The thermal quenching experiment was performed, and the activation energy was calculated as 0.23 eV. At high temperature, the Sr2.55Y(BO3)3:0.45Bi3+ phosphor presented good thermal stability (79.99% of RT emission intensity at 420 K). LED devices (chip: 370 nm) using the Sr2.55Y(BO3)3:0.45Bi3+ phosphor as a fluorescent material showed excellent electroluminescence performance. Under a driving current of 20 mA, the devices showed CIE coordinates of (0.3842, 0.3980), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4053 K and a high color rendering index (Ra) of 91.6. This work demonstrates that Sr3Y(BO3)3:Bi3+ is a promising NUV excited blue fluorescent material which shows advantage in white light-emitting diodes for solid-state lighting.

Inorganic lead-free halide perovskites are quite desirable for various applications due to their outstanding optoelectronic performances. However, excitation wavelength-dependent multi-emission in a single luminophore is less reported. In this study, Sb 3+ /Bi 3+ /Er 3+ codoped Cs 2 Ag 0.1 Na 0.9 InCl 6 lead-free double perovskite with upconversion and downshifting luminescence modes has been developed. The double perovskite displays a dual-emission band located at 450 nm and 580 nm under excitation of 355 nm. The blue emission originates from self-trapped excitons (STEs) in [SbCl 6 ] 3- octahedrons, while the yellow emission comes from STEs between states localized in the BiCl 6 and AgCl 6 octahedra. Interestingly, the phosphor’s emission can be dynamically adjusted by excitation wavelength and Sb 3+ doping concentration. Not only that, the phosphor can also generate upconversion green light upon the irradiation of 980 nm lasers. The multi-excitation wavelength characteristics of this perovskite make it very suitable as a material for anti-counterfeiting and encoded information storage, and the excellent temperature stability and moisture resistance of this perovskite also make it more promising.

The content of Cu 2+ in lubricating oil and lubricant temperature are important indicators predicting mechanical failure. Therefore, developing a nontoxic fluorescence probe is necessary to detect Cu 2+ and temperature in lubricating oil. The lead-free inorganic double perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) Cs 2 AgInCl 6 are potential candidates. However, the low fluorescence intensity and the high excitation energy required of Cs 2 AgInCl 6 NCs limit their practical applications. In this study, Bi 3+ and Tb 3+ were successfully co-doped into Cs 2 AgInCl 6 NCs via the hot-injection method. The doping of Bi 3+ produces a broad emission originating from self-trapped excitons and reduces the excitation energy, allowing commercial LEDs as excitation sources. Tb 3+ ions doping offers characteristic emission peaks ( 5 D 0 - 7 F J ) of Tb 3+ ions and improves the fluorescence intensity of Cs 2 AgInCl 6 NCs. Furthermore, the Cs 2 AgInCl 6 : Bi 3+ /Tb 3+ NCs have been employed as optical thermometry, which provide a temperature calibration curve with the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of 2.15% K −1 at 350 K and 2.25% K −1 at 303 K in the temperature range of 303–423 K, respectively. Finally, the nanocrystals have been applied to detect Cu 2+ in lubricating oil. The fluorescent probe shows a good detection sensitivity of 8.94 × 10 -4 nM −1 and a low detection limit of 14.3 nM in the range of 10–300 nM. This work not merely offers a novel way for improving the luminescence performances of double perovskite NCs Cs 2 AgInCl 6 , but broadens their potential for detection of Cu 2+ and temperature.

Lead-halide perovskites exhibit excellent photovoltaic properties. However, lead's toxicity and limited stability under ambient conditions limit its further commercialization. This paper reports a Bi3+-doped lead-free metal halide, Cs2ZnCl4:Bi3+ nanocrystals (NCs). After doping with Bi3+, the pristine weakly luminescent nanocrystals showed highly efficient broadband blue emission with a peak position of 445 nm, a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 92 nm, and a significant increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) to 57.71%. The formation of a water-induced protective layer of BiOCl ensures good water stability. The luminescence mechanism of Cs2ZnCl4:Bi3+ NCs has been investigated by optical characterization and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, and it has been concluded that the emission of triple-state self-trapped excitons (STEs) induced by Bi3+ doping is the source of broadband blue light emission. Combining nanocrystals as a luminescence down-shifting (LDS) layer with commercial GaAs solar cell devices has solved the problem of the solar cell's weak absorption of short waves, augmenting the photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) by approximately 1%. Additionally, the integration of Cs2ZnCl4:Bi3+ NCs with 365 nm commercial LED chips enables the creation of broadband blue-emitting LED devices. Therefore, we believe that Cs2ZnCl4:Bi3+ NCs have great potential for future optoelectronic applications.
