Determination of C═C Positions of Unsaturated Fatty Acids in Foods via Ambient Reactive Desorption Ionization with Water Dimer Radical Cations

Wenwen Yang,Xiaoping Zhang,Jun Zhang,Guoshuan Wang,Hailong Liang,Xinglei Zhang,Konstantin Chingin,Huanwen Chen

The positions of C═C bonds in unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) are one of the main factors determining the quality of food flavor. Herein, we developed an approach for the determination of C═C bonds of FAs by online epoxidation reaction with water dimer radical cations. The limit of detection for octenoic acid isomers was ∼9 μg/L. The positions of C═C bonds in trans-2/3-hexenoic acid, trans-2/3-octenoic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid in black tea or olive oil samples were directly determined by the established method. These results indicate that the established method allows the rapid determination of unsaturated FAs in black tea and olive oil. The advantages of this approach include the analysis speed (∼1 min per sample), simple device, and no need for complex pretreatment. This study not only provides a strategy for the determination of C═C positions but also offers new possibilities for applications in the field of food chemistry.

Preparation and properties of C/C−ZrB2−SiC composites by high-solid-loading slurry impregnation and polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP)

Li-ping RAN,Fei RAO,Ke PENG,Huan YIN,Mao-zhong YI

Ultrahigh-temperature ceramics were added to C/C composites to meet their application requirement in a high-temperature oxidizing environment. C/C−ZrB 2 −SiC composites were fabricated by high-solid-loading slurry impregnation with polymer infiltration and pyrolysis. The dispersion and rheological behavior of ZrB 2 slurry and the microstructural, mechanical, and ablation properties of the C/C−ZrB 2 −SiC composites were investigated. Results indicated that a well-dispersed and low-viscosity ZrB 2 slurry was obtained using 0.40 wt.% polyethyleneimine as a dispersant at pH 5. Ceramics were uniformly distributed in the short-cut fiber layer and needle-punched area. The flexural strength of the C/C−ZrB 2 −SiC composites was 309.30 MPa. The composites exhibited satisfactory ablation resistance under the oxyacetylene flame of 2500 °C, and the mass and linear ablation rates were 0.40 mg/s and 0.91 μm/s, respectively. A continuous and compact ZrO 2 layer, which could effectively reduce the diffusion rate of oxygen and protect the composites from being ablated, was formed.

Efficient Hydrogen Production by Aqueous Phase Reforming of Ethylene Glycol over Ni-W Catalysts with Enhanced C-C Bond Cleavage Activity

Ling Xie,Zilong Huang,Yapeng Zhan,Jiahao Huang,Chao Wang,Riyang Shu,Junyao Wang,Libin Lei,Jianping Liu,Zhipeng Tian,Ying Chen

Cleavage of C-C bonds is crucial for hydrogen production via aqueous phase reforming of biomass-derived oxygenates. In this study, the hydrogen production performance and C-C bond cleavage capacity of Ni-W/AC catalysts with varying W/Ni ratios are evaluated using ethylene glycol as a model compound. A series of APR experiments conducted suggests that Ni-0.2W/AC catalyst exhibits the highest C1/C2+ratio of 15.87 and achieves a hydrogen yield of 47.76%. The enhanced Ni-W bimetallic interactions, which significantly improve the efficiency of C-C bond cleavage and increase catalyst activity by promoting active site dispersion, are confirmed by detailed characterization techniques. Further analysis of product distribution provides insights into the reaction pathways of ethylene glycol and the reaction mechanism for ethanol during aqueous phase reforming. All the results indicate that this catalytic reforming method effectively facilitates C-C bond cleavage and hydrogen production, contributing to a better understanding of APR mechanisms for biomass-derived oxygenates.

An azo bond primary cleavage and C–C bond secondary cleavage-based polymeric β-lapachone prodrug for selective anti-cancer therapy

Zhao Weidong,Zheng Mengfei,Chu Hongyu,Zhang Jingxuan,Wang Kun,Yang Chenguang,Shen Na,Tang Zhaohui

β-Lapachone (β-Lap) is a promising ortho -naphthoquinone drug for cancer treatment and has been in clinical trials. Its application is constrained by the low aqueous solubility, and severe side effects. Even prodrug designation is an effective approach to render it with tumor selectivity, it is limited by the lack of modifiable groups on β-Lap. Herein, a novel azo bond primary cleavage and carbon–carbon (C–C) bond secondary cleavage-based polymeric β-Lap prodrug (Azo-Lap NP) is designed, in which the self-immolated para -aminobenzyl linker is connected to poly( l -glutamic acid) (PGlu) via azo linkage and the responsive drug release of β-Lap against tumors can be achieved under high NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) expression and low pH environment in tumors. The effective covalent loading of β-Lap by Azo-Lap NPs permitted a high administration dose of β-Lap and enabled significant tumor retention time. Moreover, Azo-Lap NPs markedly reduced the side effects of β-Lap by avoiding hemolysis and the production of methemoglobin. The safety of Azo-Lap NPs administration is validated in the antitumor experiment of mice. In the 4T1 model, Azo-Lap NPs exhibited a markedly higher tumor suppression rate than β-Lap. This work provides an effective and safe polymeric prodrug for tumor selective delivery of β-Lap.

Solar-Driven Highly Effective Biomass-Derived Alcohols C–C Coupling Integrated with H2 Production by CdS Quantum Dots Modified Zn2In2S5 Nanosheets

Zongyi Huang,Pengfei Sun,Huizhen Zhang,Haikun Zhang,Shuhong Zhang,Zhou Chen,Xiaodong Yi,Shunji Xie

The integration of solar-driven H2 evolution with the selective conversion of biomass-derived alcohols into value-added chemicals has gained significant attention for full use of electrons and holes. We develop a dual-functional photocatalyst for highly selective oxidation of the Cα–H bond of benzyl alcohol to C–C coupled products (hydrobenzoin and deoxybenzoin), in cooperation with H2 evolution, using point-to-face interface engineering by decorating CdS quantum dots on Zn2In2S5 nanosheets (CdS QDs/Zn2In2S5 NS). The CdS QDs/Zn2In2S5 NS exhibit a high H2 evolution rate of 13 mmol g–1 h–1 and C–C coupled products formation rate of 10.8 mmol g–1 h–1 with 96.3% selectivity. Benzyl alcohol conversion achieves 91% with an 89% yield of C–C coupled products in gram-scale. The introduction of CdS enhances the interfacial contact, facilitating the efficient spatial separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and providing active sites for H2 evolution. In situ characterization and DFT calculation reveal that the carbon-centered radical •CH(OH)C6H5, generated by abstracting the Cα–H bond of benzyl alcohol, is the reactive intermediate in the photocatalytic C–C coupled process.

Significantly improved thermal conductivity of C/C composite by constructing 3D SiC nanowires network in carbon felt via vacuum thermal evaporation

Hui Zhu,Bo Liu,Jiawang Hou,Ruiqi Wang,Ye Cong,Zhijun Dong,Baoliu Li,Jianguang Guo,Xuanke Li

Developing a nanoscale secondary thermal conduction network within carbon fiber performs is a challenging yet effective method to substantially enhance the thermal conductivity of C/C composites. In this study, a strategy for creating a three-dimensional (3D) SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) thermal conductivity network in carbon felts (CFs) was implemented using vacuum thermal evaporation technology to fabricate SiCNWs modified C/C composites (SiCNW–C/C). The growth mechanism of SiC nanowires within CFs and their impact on the microstructure and thermal conductivity of the C/C composite were thoroughly investigated. The findings indicate that a SiC nanowires thermal conduction network can be successfully established within carbon felts without catalysts by initiating nucleation sites and managing reaction pressure. An appropriate reaction pressure is crucial not only for the uniform growth of SiC nanowires but also as a key factor in modulating the content and microstructure of the SiC nanowires. SiC nanowires prepared at 150 Pa exhibit minimal structural defects and are evenly distributed throughout the carbon felts, markedly enhancing the thermal response rate of the felts. The thermal conductivity of these SiCNW-modified C/C composites, both parallel and perpendicular to the carbon fibers, increased to 173 W/m•K and 112 W/m•K, respectively, approximately tripling that of the pure C/C composite. The exceptional thermal management capabilities of SiCNW–C/C were empirically validated through simulated operational chips and finite element simulation. This work presents an effective approach for producing C/C composite with high thermal conductivity particularly through the thickness, offering promising applications in the thermal management of advanced electronics.

Photocatalytic Stille Cross-coupling on Gold/g-C3N4 Nano-heterojunction

Yu Qiuying,Lin Xiu,Li Xinhao,Chen Jiesheng

Heterogeneous catalysts have been developed for C-C coupling reactions, but stand low activity and always proceed under harsh conditions. Photocatalytic Stille cross-coupling reaction as a green catalytic method for C-C bond formation is of great interest for a wide range of scientists but still lacks stable and highly efficient catalysts. Herein, we have designed an Au nanoparticle-graphitic carbon nitride heterojunction as an outstanding photo-catalyst for artificial photosynthesis in Stille cross-coupling reaction. The interface effect between metal and semiconductor makes electron rectify and prevents the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Moreover, the efficiency of Au nanoparticle catalysts could be adjusted by gold contents. Thus the turnover frequency(TOF) value reached the highest level of 788 h −1 over the optimal heterojunction catalyst. Most importantly, the C-C bond formation reaction has been proved to be carried out well under visible light irradiation, indicating the low-cost organic synthesis process. Further analysis confirmed the stability and general application of our heterogeneous Au nano-heterojunction catalyst.

The cascade synthesis of α,β-unsaturated ketones via oxidative C–C coupling of ketones and primary alcohols over a ceria catalyst

Zhixin Zhang,Yehong Wang,Min Wang,Jianmin Lu,Chaofeng Zhang,Lihua Li,Jingyang Jiang,Feng Wang

We herein report the oxidative C–C coupling of ketones and primary alcohols to produce α,β-unsaturated ketones in the absence of base additives. This cascade synthetic reaction was conducted at 150 °C in 12 h using a heterogeneous CeO2 catalyst. The conversion of acetophenone reached 74% with 89% selectivity to chalcone. A correlation between the CeO2 crystal plane and catalytic performance is established as the catalytic activities decrease in the sequence of (110) > (111) > (100). Characterization using Raman spectroscopy, CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), and in situ active site-capping tests has shown that the unusual catalysis of the CeO2 catalyst is attributed to the coexistence of basic and redox active sites. These sites synergistically catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and the aldol condensation to ketones. Moreover, the CeO2 catalyst can be reused several times after calcination to remove the surface-adsorbed substances.

S/O and vinyl isomerization enables ultrafast cationic ring-opening polymerization toward CO2-derived polythioester with migrated in-chain C=C substituents

Lu Zong-Bin,Peng Shun-Ran,Wang Zhe,Xiong Yu,Xia Lei,Chen Guang,Nie Xuan,Hong Chun-Yan,Zhang Ze,You Ye-Zi

Developing high-performance CO 2 -based polymers is promising to address the challenges of CO 2 sequestration and the environmental impact of petroleum-based plastics. The δ-lactone 3-ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one and its derivatives, synthesized from CO 2 with 1,3-butadiene, have emerged as very promising CO 2 -derived monomers. However, their general ring-opening polymerizations face challenges with thermodynamics and kinetics, generally resulting in long reaction times, low conversions, and low-molecular-weight polyesters with poor mechanical properties. Herein, we report a dual isomerization-driven cationic ring-opening polymerization (DI-CROP) of a CO 2 -derived thionolactone, 3-ethyl-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-thione, in which the relayed S/O and vinyl isomerizations significantly enhance polymerization activity, enabling the rapid synthesis of high-molecular-weight CO 2 -based polythioesters, achieving near-quantitative conversion within just a few minutes. Also, the relayed S/O and vinyl isomerizations in DI-CROP can easily migrate C=C substituents on the ring of thionolactone into its backbone. These features further enable the production of sustainable CO 2 -based materials through efficient copolymerization and post-polymerization functionalization. This study enriches the realm of isomerization-driven polymerizations, and provides a new synthetic approach to CO 2 -derived polymeric materials.

Integrated C–C coupling/hydrogenation of ketones derived from biomass pyrolysis for aviation fuel over Ni/Mg–Al–O/AC bifunctional catalysts

Shanshan Shao,Xinggang Hu,Wenbin Dong,Xiaohua Li,Huiyan Zhang,Rui Xiao,Yixi Cai

Aldol condensation of biomass-derives coupled with hydrogenation is a promising route for the production of renewable aviation fuel. In this study, a bifunctional catalyst was prepared to integrate the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and hydroprocessing for aviation fuel in one pot. Due to its strong mild-basic sites, Mg–Al–O performed the best with the total yield of dimer and trimer of 80.4%. Nickel was screened out to be favorable for hydrogenation. Considering the unsatisfactory porous structure of Ni/Mg–Al–O, the bifunctional catalyst was prepared with activated carbon (AC) as carrier. With Ni loading of 20 wt%, the maximum yield of targeted alkanes reached 81.1% over Ni/Mg–Al–O/AC. The calcination and reduction temperature in the preparation process were both optimized at 550 °C. In the reusability test, the yield of targeted alkanes reduced to 31.6% in the 5th run. To attenuate the hydration effect, n-pentane was introduced as solvent, and the bifunctional Ni/Mg–Al–O/AC performed stably in 5 runs. By the design of bifunctional catalyst based on the theoretical basis to realize the integration of C–C coupling and hydrogenation in one pot, it will promote the development of aviation fuel from biomass in a more sustainable and green way.

Catalytic conversion of glucose to furfural via asymmetrical C-C bond scission: Insight into the location and configuration of framework Sn species

Weijie Shen,Li Dong,Shuoqi Pei,Guoqiang Ding,Shanhui Zhu,Yueqing Wang,Guangping Lei,Yulei Zhu

Tandem isomerization and decarbonylation increased furfural yield from 34.4% to 67.9%. • Framework Sn location was governed by T-vacancy distribution in dealuminated H-beta. • Open Sn sites at pore mouths improved furfural selectivity. The asymmetric C-C bond scission of C6 glucose to C5 furfural via a “C5 + C1” retro-aldol pathway represents a promising and important route for the valorization of bio-based sugar resources. However, this transformation still faces major challenges in achieving high selectivity and efficiency, as stable glucopyranose tends to undergo side reactions leading to oligomeric humins. In this work, to enhance furfural yield, Sn atoms were incorporated into the framework of dealuminated H-beta zeolite to construct synergistic active sites for coupling isomerization and decarbonization reactions. The catalytic performance was found to be highly sensitive to the type, spatial location, and coordination environment of framework Sn species. Based on Low-Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results, it is demonstrated that open Sn sites located at the pore mouths of H-beta zeolite are conducive to the conversion of glucose into furfural via coupled isomerization-decarbonization pathways. Accordingly, Sn-Al-beta-C, which possesses the highest proportion of open Sn sites, achieves the highest furfural yield of 67.9% at nearly complete glucose conversion, markedly outperforming H-beta (34.4%) and the corresponding physical mixtures. The ratio of open to closed Sn sites can be regulated by controlling the deposition of Sn (IV) species at the pore mouths of H-beta zeolite. The results of this work demonstrate the feasibility of constructing metal–acid bifunctional sites for the direct conversion of glucose to furfural and provide valuable insights for the rational design of efficient metal-modified zeolite catalysts.

Interfacial Electronic Modulation of Co3O4/CeO2 Heterojunction for Optimizing C–C Bond Cleavage and Intermediate Adsorption in Glycerol Oxidation to Glycolic Acid

Shuang Wei,Sheng Zhong,Chao Bao,Linbo Huang,Kexin Li,Ruirui Wang,Bin He,Ruirui Zhang,Ruixia Liu

The selective electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol to high-value C2–C3 chemicals offers a promising approach to glycerol overproduction, while it struggles with precise C–C cleavage and limited selectivity from multiple pathways. Regulating the adsorption capacity of glycerol oxidation intermediates and the degree of C–C bond cleavage through the interfacial electronic structure of electrocatalysts is crucial for controlling C2–C3 selectivity. Herein, a self-supported p-n heterojunction catalyst (Co3O4/CeO2) is developed for the efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol to C2 chemicals, achieving a glycolic acid selectivity of 42%, with a yield of 19.6 μmol cm–2 h–1. The built-in electric field enables rapid interfacial charge transfer from CeO2 to Co3O4, which leads to the upshifted d-band center of active Co3O4. Electrochemical characterization and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the heterojunction promotes the adsorption of hydroxyl species and glycerol, thereby enhancing the activity of the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). Concurrently, the optimized electron cloud distribution of Co3O4 active sites strengthens the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates while weakening the adsorption of glycolic acid and suppresses the further cleavage of C–C bonds, thus increasing glycolic acid selectivity. This study clarifies the redox kinetic adsorption regulation mechanism of the Co3O4/CeO2 heterojunction catalyst and provides a highly promising electrocatalyst design strategy for the production of high-value-added C2 products via glycerol oxidation.
